Sorry but there's an error at @6:44, because this game is "Chōjin Sentai Jetman" released for the Famicom in December 21 1991 by Angel and developed by Natsume. "Fiveman" was the Super Sentai series that happened before Jetman and it was a disaster, at the point that almost destroyed the full Super Sentai franchise. Jetman were initially designed to be the last betting on the Super Sentai's success and they turned out to be a smash it in Japan. If it wasn't for the Jetman, surely we could have never got any Zyuranger (the series that came after the Jetman), and so no Power Rangers in the history of the western side of the world!
I’ve known this for a while now but back then I had a feeling something was off. You could tell the footage with the rangers suited up looked older. The Halloween episode with the Frankenstein monster was the nail in the coffin for me. The monster had a few different looks in the episode.
There actually are monsters in the game. In Dans stage you can see mini Dora Circes (Pudgy Pig) and in Goshis stage you can see mini Dora Endoses (Pineoctopus)
You know why it didn't make it? Power Rangers released in 1993. The SNES was what Nintendo wanted to push at that time and there were very few NES games released during that time. I doubt Nintendo, Bandai, or whoever wanted to sink money into localizing a game that isn't that great for a system that was practically discontinued.
I think the ultimate problem was how slow the translation/localization process was. Think about how bad it was for Pokemon on gameboy 5+ years later and that was in-house.
11:35 but, what do you want mate? this is how a platformer its done, not everything needs to be a brawler, walking streets punching putty patrolers, a platformer needs to have variety of small enemies, paths to discover and jumps and shoots, its like needs to be. Bro, its an amazing little game. Follows the premise of every videogame in the 8 and 16 bit era. Or, when wolves attached SLy Stallone in cliffhanger movie? or when the same enemy cames over and over to be karate kicked by our hero? gimme a brreak.
That was a huge mistage you've made: the first Super Sentai video game wasn't Fiveman...it was Jetman!! Chojin Sentai Jetman released in 1991 by Natsume (that will develop most of the PR games) is an awesome game to play, despite being very short.
Power rangers/ Super sentai makes me remember the case of Robotech/ Macross and Mospeada case were the USA dudes imported the Japanese product, completely erase the story and the voices and paste a completely new remade story and try to adapt it to the animation.
If you haven't played it yet you should download the power rangers beats of power game, its fan made but its amazing, exactly how they should of been made.
Here in Argentina, due to the economic situation of most families in the 90s, there weren't many people who could afford a NES, so Chinese clones of the Famicom were sold here, commonly known as Family Game, and thanks to that we were lucky enough to receive the Zyuranger game, which was marketed as Power Rangers, in Japanese, you couldn't understand anything, especially the mini games, but the gameplay was simple and enjoyable, I remember finishing it well.
Much respect for the shoutout to AVGN. A little bit shocked that Zyuranger wasn’t that big a season of Sentai. The writing was Game of Thrones level, specifically when Burai came into the mix.
1:02 OH GOD, I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY, I KNEW THERE WAS THIS POWER RANGERS GAME ON THE NES BECAUSE I PLAYED IT ON A FAMICLONE WHEN I WAS A KID!!! DAYUM, THANK GOD I FINALLY FOUND IT AGAIN!!!
They could have ported to the nes in the united states in 1994, giving the nes owners a chance to have a power rangers game like they did with tmnt tournament fighters.
It would have been one of those games you rented from blockbuster without the instructions, play for 29 minutes before rage quitting and lamenting your weekend away…
Ah power rangers, now there's some nostalgia... I remember the song that charted with the Easter egg at the end for the white power ranger... never been more hyped in my life... rip Jason.
Game looks fun as hell honestly, even with the miner issues you stated. Also looks fun just focused on the Sentai / Rangers on foot, instead of Zords plays. I rememeber the one fighting game for Rangers in the 90s that was strictly, and only zord vs zord and kaiju which was a fun beat um up, but no ability to play as the Rangers at all. lol I wouldn't mind playing this game if someone actually did an emulator for it. Great video content as always, I subbed!!! Keep it up Mr. Top-Hat!
Sega's games were either in development first or just took less time than the Nintendo counterparts. I do know that Green Ranger was intended to be a playable character or at the very least a boss but they ran out of time, as Nintendo was pressing a hard Christmas release. There was even worries within Nintendo as the season 2 retool bringing in White Ranger and the Thunderzords fighting against the new enemy Lord Zedd would upset kids. There was alot riding on this game's success and they had only one year to do it.
It was pretty much just that the NES was on life support in 1993. People saying it was because Nintendo didn't care about the NES anymore are only partly right. Third party devs had already largely moved on to the 16 bit platforms. Capcom wasn't going to bother localizing or releasing Mega Man 6 in western territories. The only reason we got it is because someone at Nintendo decided that in spite of what Capcom thought, there was still money to be made with another Mega Man game and published it themselves.
The game looks good but between redoing some of the music and game plot to change it to fit the localization it might have just been more work than they wanted to do on the game as an import.
I actually used to own this game! We in Eastern Europe had the Famicom, not the NES, so we got a ton of imported Japanese games, including many that were never released in the West. I was a big Power Rangers fan, so I was so ecstatic to get my hands on that one - and for a while had no idea why RUclipsrs only spoke about the SNES Power Rangers beat'em up and not this gem.
Actually, Green Ranger was intended for both the SNES and Game Boy versions but Nintendo didn't want to wait for the developers to add him in and potentially miss the Christmas buying season in 1994. Sega's versions didn't have much time in development compared to the Nintendo counterparts so they could fit Green Ranger in.
It's cool to learn more details about this game. I remember seeing this in the AVGN review of the power rangers games some years ago, but I don't know it doesn't look like we really missed out on this game because they really messed up with it but yeah it might have been cool
And Stan Lee was responsible for the Zords. He tried to bring the rangers over in the 80s and let the Japanese company use the Spider-Man IP, thus making Leopardon the first Zord in the Sentai universe
I love Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger for the FamiCom! When I was growing up in the 90s, I played it all the time on my FamiClone. Thank you for covering this short, but gem, Mr. Top Hat! Please cover other Power Rangers games.
That game was not limited to Japan, pirated versions that alongside with knock off Famicom clone consoles made it to Europe, especially part of Europe that used to be on the east block and people didn't realy think about any copyrights. So those consoles were all over the place in Poland in various shapes and sizes for cheap, pirated game cartridges, including that game were cheap. So I did play it, didn't understand anything in that game or what is going on but it was fun.
This looks awesome and as a kid, would have LOVED playing this. But looking at it, knowing how early 90s moms were about ‘violence in video games’ …. This wouldn’t have helped them think that Power Rangers weren’t.
The Jetman Famicom game is good, kind of like a really easy version of Shatterhand. The Zyu Ranger game however wasn’t good at all though that’s my opinion. Nintendo was wise to keep the Zyu Ranger game from heading to western game players.
Just from looking at the clips a couple of the Monster of the Week monsters show up as normal enemies, there was the one that looked like Pudgy Pig, and another that looked like a tentacled eye guy.
What we got might not have been the first set of heroes but we might well have got the one with the best costumes! I'm sure I'm looking at it with thick rose tinted glasses but those dinosaur themed helmets were the cleanest and most visually interesting
Comparing Power Rangers to reheating leftovers and calling yourself a chef is amazing though I feel like Saban would be like "Chef? that sounds like it has a tax liability. I am just an individual consuming nutrients at a loss"
10:32 Beat 'em Up style games are extremely difficult to make on the NES because those types of games typically involve a lot of characters moving around on the screen, bunched up around the same horizontal position. For those who don't know, not only is there a limitation on the number of sprites that can be on the screen (and every character would inevitably have to be made up of a large number of sprites, if you didn't want them to be tiny) but there's ALSO a limitation on the number of sprites that can be displayed on a given scanline, meaning that even if you DIDN'T hit that limit you'd be subjected to severe sprite flickering. The only game I can think of in that style for the NES was some of the Battletoads levels -- a game which was considered a technical marvel at the time and was released extremely late in the NES's life cycle, and that game had a maximum of maybe 3 enemies on screen at any given time.
@@TopHatGamingManChannel in my opinion that is like complaining that Super Mario 1 wasn't like Super Mario 3 because they were both NES games. They probably just didn't put much in the way of time money or resources toward this title.
@@TopHatGamingManChannel How about Kunio Kun game River City Ransom that was great too? Even allow to pick up weapons where in Mighty Final Fight you are limited to knife(for Cody) Shurikens(for Guy) and Mallet(For Haggar)
🎶Zyuranger! Zyuranger! 🎶Densetsu no senshi tachi yo 🎶Zyuranger! Zyuranger! 🎶Toki wo kakeru kibo 🎶Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger! May not a spectacular series or game, but what it was turned into in the west was MORPHENOMENAL!
"Z" makes a "J" sound in Japan. Zyuranger sounds like "Jyuranger." #TheMoreYouKnow 6:25 i discovered Super Sentai while in college, and it was just like finding a secret vault of lost treasures lol
6:44 that game is Chojin Sentai Jetman (Yeah, the japanese letters are not easy for us westerners). When you said Fiveman, I really went after to see some screenshots, sadly I didnt found any. If exists, i really want to see.
I will very happily purchase whichever seasons I need to. I do not remember Jason ever wearing the Vest of Tommy’s Green Ranger while I was growing up. When did that happen?
The Green Ranger lost his powers due to Rita's Green Candle. He transfers his shield, flute and Dragonzord to the Red Ranger due to leaving the group. In Japan though as far as I am aware, the story telling is much darker. The Red and Green Ranger are blood brothers and the Red Ranger received those things due to his brother dying in the show.
I will say I always heard and just googled to make sure but we couldn’t have a playable green ranger because he dies in Japan. Due to popularity they kept Tommy. Which is why they have few green ranger scenes because of cost. Least that’s what I’ve always been told and forsure looked up that he dies.
Hi mr tophat man! First: how are you? I'm fine, please can you tell me where can i download capcom vs the world or put the link bellow the description?? Please Ps: my english is so so.
How did you get past the pong level at the ending of the first stage? Does no warning at all it's just the megazord and the dragonzord playing pong and the ball just flies at you. Well you just suddenly in a game of pong
When this started to show in the states I had a crush on the Pink Ranger❤💪. It wasn't till years later I found out it was stock footage of an earlier show that was release in Japan?? So I was Heart Broken💔 my life was a lie. The snes game wasn't that bad, if you ignore the way the made Zachary on the game & get past the Racits look. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers SNES was a good game.
YOU guys never had the chance. I live in the magical land of Latin America, where knockoffs and bootlegs where abound. I did play the game back in the time and was a little bit disappointed. There is another game that was pretty cool, but it's the something something Rangers V . Just so you can understand the magnitude of the Latin American fandom: we played the Captain Tsubasa games IN JAPANESE, not understanding A SINGLE WORD, just because the shine was a HUGE hit here
There is nothing baffling or mysterious about it not being released in the US. Power Rangers did not air until the end of August 1993. They didn't instantly know how successful the franchise was going to be. Even if they had a crystal ball to know it takes significant time to work out localizing a game. And the time for Nintendo of America to sign off on it and production of cartridges. If you look at the games that actually were released and were 100% Power Rangers games and not Sentai games they probably were put into production not long after the show got very popular. Show airs starting late August 1993, say after a few months it's popularity is apparent. Say November or December they could be looking to produce video games so it's nearly 1994, the NES is definitely out. Yes, people still had and played the NES but the market had moved on and so had most customers. I think you just aren't considering the business and market reasons for why releasing this game on the NES made zero sense. Or you're just wishing that they would have rolled the dice anyway or something crazy like that. I enjoyed the video though! I think we all enjoy a bit of "what could have been" scenarios.
I had an NES until I was 16 before it permanantly croaked, I've played super mario bros. 3 so many times that it coulda been a guiness book of record (If I knew to record each time i played rofl)
Not a mystery Nes was done by then. Polar opposite vs why we never got a heman, voltron, thundercats. And transfoThundercats. Nes. The franchises were dead. Or dead ish at the time.
I was very haped on Power Rangers and want to play game bassed on tv series on my Pegasus famiclone console And become little dispopontent as game as in Japanese and not very fun play, so my brohter returned game and as refuned take annother one Nekketsu Fighting Legend(Kunio Kun fighting game), still another japanese game but OH MAN THAT WAS AWSOME!
Feels like you don't know much about the gaming industry and are expressing your opinion on the MMPR franchise 😅.. sorry but the late 80s and early 90s were full of Knock off games with different graphics.. which is why this games looks like Megaman to me just with different graphics.

There was even worries within Nintendo as the season 2 retool bringing in White Ranger and the Thunderzords fighting against the new enemy Lord Zedd would upset kids. There was alot riding on this game's success and they had only one year to do it.
Nah we dodged a bullet with this one
It's almost as if Nintendo isn't allowed to have the Green Ranger in any of their Power Rangers games. How disappointing.
@@darrenhood4033That’s odd because I’ve always heard that Sega paid extra to have the Green Ranger be exclusive to their consoles.
It's cool to learn more details about this game. I remember seeing this in the AVGN review of the power rangers games some years ago, but I don't know it doesn't look like we really missed out on this game because they really messed up with it but yeah it might have been cool
We missed out on NES Power Rangers for the same reason we never got EB Beginnings. Too late in the NES lifecycle.
And Stan Lee was responsible for the Zords. He tried to bring the rangers over in the 80s and let the Japanese company use the Spider-Man IP, thus making Leopardon the first Zord in the Sentai universe
Kind of ...But Stan lee was in no way responsible for zords. He was nothing to do with leopadron or the battle fever j mech
@@djcactus no but the existence of spiderman is the key here
Not really...
@@likky1 but not to giant mechs, they already existed elsewhere in Japan , just not in what would become Sentai I untill Spiderman
@@djcactus i mean it was the show that introduced giant mechs to live action
Indeed, I own a Pegasus I purchased when travelling Poland haha
This looks awesome and as a kid, would have LOVED playing this. But looking at it, knowing how early 90s moms were about ‘violence in video games’ …. This wouldn’t have helped them think that Power Rangers weren’t.
LOL Karen moms united.. BLEH.. hahaha
A lot of Power Ranger videos lately, I love it. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
This game actually looks pretty good for the NES. I assume by the time MMPR got hot in the US, they wanted games on 16-bit hardware instead.
11:45 I was a kid at the time. Action-Platformers were the genre we wanted most.
The Jetman Famicom game is good, kind of like a really easy version of Shatterhand. The Zyu Ranger game however wasn’t good at all though that’s my opinion. Nintendo was wise to keep the Zyu Ranger game from heading to western game players.
We need more spandex heroes again!lol Great upload
Oh its super sentai. Makes sense why it didnt make it here. We wouldve loved it for sure though.
Comparing Power Rangers to reheating leftovers and calling yourself a chef is amazing
though I feel like Saban would be like "Chef? that sounds like it has a tax liability.
Turtles 2 and 3, Mighty Final Fight, River City Ransom there are a fair few decent ones
🎶Zyuranger! Zyuranger!
🎶Densetsu no senshi tachi yo
🎶Zyuranger! Zyuranger!
🎶Toki wo kakeru kibo
🎶Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger!
May not a spectacular series or game, but what it was turned into in the west was MORPHENOMENAL!
Thank you. I had James' goofy singing in my head and wanted to sing it myself.
Quite a decision to have the screen flash when you hit the enemy as opposed to the enemy flashing. Though I guess the bosses flash when hit at least?
"Z" makes a "J" sound in Japan. Zyuranger sounds like "Jyuranger." #TheMoreYouKnow
6:25 i discovered Super Sentai while in college, and it was just like finding a secret vault of lost treasures lol
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger.
Dinosaur Squadron Beastranger.
"Zyu" is mispelled as "Juu" which means Beast in English.
9:09 I’m surprised he had the time. It’s after 5:40 after all.
Nice..you learn something every day.
Soon can you do an akuma street fighter video
Btw it's strange that you mentioned "TMNT: Shredder's Revenge" several times, but never mentioned "MMPR: Rita's Rewind".
I don't have an affiliate deal to promote on Rita's Rewind unfortunately.
Pretty sure that's because the discount is for the Turtles's game and not for the new Rangers's game.
😄👍
Um hey, Top. Let me preface that I hate being that guy, but that game footage was from the Jetman game for the NES not Fiveman.
yeah people have already pointed that out below, thanks.
you said chikyuu sentai fiveman, but that's wrong.. the game was chojin sentai jetman.. fiveman didn't have a famicom game.
Thank you.
Please
Ps: my english is so so.
still mind blown it never came to the US! i recently played it on my channel if anyone wants to see game play lol i am not that great but its fun
I only remember AVGN singin'...
ZYURENGAAAA!!... ZYURENGAAAA!!...
DEEEN-SETSU NO SEEENSHI TAACHI YOOO!!! 😅😂
More praise for Zyuranger
This game would have been received poorly if it was released in the US in 1993 when MMPR came out. MMPR came out when the SNES was the new hotness.
GO GO POWER RAAANGERS!
YOU guys never had the chance. I live in the magical land of Latin America, where knockoffs and bootlegs where abound. I did play the game back in the time and was a little bit disappointed.
There is another game that was pretty cool, but it's the something something Rangers V .
Just so you can understand the magnitude of the Latin American fandom: we played the Captain Tsubasa games IN JAPANESE, not understanding A SINGLE WORD, just because the shine was a HUGE hit here
Can i get a deal on power rangers,& gi-joe beat em ups for xbox series x or just steam?
Wasn't shatterhand a altered version of solbrain?
The Super Nintendos sound board was way ahead of its time thx to Sony.:::
Where do I go to download this game?
I think we all enjoy a bit of "what could have been" scenarios.
how did you not know they had already been around? everyone i knew did
lol I was always the Green (then White Ranger) because I've always had long hair.
Nes was pretty much done by the time power rangers got big
Before I watch this video, it looks like they just reskinned an existing game for the NES version.
The SNES games were definitely better thought out.
Saying "Japan only Power Ranger" feels so bad, why you didn't mention Super Sentai early?
I had an NES until I was 16 before it permanantly croaked, I've played super mario bros. 3 so many times that it coulda been a guiness book of record (If I knew to record each time i played rofl)
That's surprising. Considering Power Rangers don't even exist in Japan :)
Amusingly it does! They localised the adaptation lol.
name me one nes game that follows the source material totally? They are usually not even close
Not a mystery
Nes was done by then. Polar opposite vs why we never got a heman, voltron, thundercats. And transfoThundercats. Nes. The franchises were dead. Or dead ish at the time.
I was very haped on Power Rangers and want to play game bassed on tv series on my Pegasus famiclone console
And become little dispopontent as game as in Japanese and not very fun play, so my brohter returned game and as refuned take annother one Nekketsu Fighting Legend(Kunio Kun fighting game), still another japanese game but OH MAN THAT WAS AWSOME!
You can play this game on a bootleg mini nes concel.
Eh I am kinda glad it didn't come out here. I prefer the games we did get.
Why does your voice sound different in this video? Almost sounds like AI.
No idea, people comment this every video recently. Suspicious minds I guess lol.
No joke, Polystation had it, to Bad it was in japanese, worst, it has a trivia minigame needed to progress
Oh damn, most LATAM people enjoyed that game thanks to piracy :0 myself included, it was pretty shitty tbh xD
I also like Kamen Rider.
Sluggish and unresponsive controls, bad platforming… they definitely hit the mark on "player expectations", I guess. Thanks, LJN.
Please upload a street fighter video there so interesting 😢
Sunday!
thank you
if it never made it into the us then why is it in english
Feels like you don't know much about the gaming industry and are expressing your opinion on the MMPR franchise 😅.. sorry but the late 80s and early 90s were full of Knock off games with different graphics.. which is why this games looks like Megaman to me just with different graphics.
darn another rangers game to forget about. there really isn't many "good" games in the super sentai catalog
Carranger
🎉
interesting
I TRIED to like the power rangers show....UGH. It just flat out SUCKED! Even for mid 90's shows!
Simply put.. the game isn't good.
so glad for emulators you can play games from all over the world
The nes wasn't popular by 94 it was outdated by then
True that, sadly..
