- Diary of a Wimpy Kid's new movie on Disney Plus is officially here! Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson, his best friend, tackle the trials and tribulations of middle school. While this animated Wimpy Kid movie is faithful to the book, it's missing a lot of content.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid series creator Jeff Kinney had a large role working on this new Disney Plus movie, so it does stay true to the source material. However, there's not enough time in its 58 minutes to fully develop the world of Greg Heffley, leading to a mixed adaptation. The good news is that future Wimpy Kid books, like Rodrick Rules, will also get animated movies! Could they fix the problem here?

honestly, I think it would've worked out more as a show. You can go through the books easily without having to cut a whole bunch of important things.

Well the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series is already structured like some sort of sitcom,so it would work really well as a TV series.
On the more positive side, I like the easter eggs and call-backs to the other books. Greg has a Net Kritterz poster on his wall, Greg and Rowley send Manny out to get candy like what Rodrick did for school fundraisers, Rowley wonders if the Goat Man is split down the middle, and probably more that I missed. It’s neat to see continuity between the first story we all know and the later ones.

The anti-bullying posters all over the school prove the animators knew what they were doing.
On one hand, this movie needs more.
On the other hand, I like how the characters are likable just like the original Diary of A Wimpy Kid movies.
Greg wasn’t likeable in the movies though.

They did cut out a lot, but Greg seems like a better friend in this movie

Him being a good person really takes away interest of his character. And in books everyone is a terrible person except rodrick with the order from a zoo we mama funny to a patty patty is a fatty as rodrick, Greg, frank, manny and Susan
It was fun seeing Greg through a new medium. Fregley's voiceover was superb I thought it was og voiceover archives. I watched it with my nieces and nephews and they enjoyed it however considering these books are getting older, hardcore fans will notice the inconsistencies. Everytime Susan was talking it felt off, her voice acting is very good but like why is her volume really low and scraggly.

I don't think the first couple movies made animated would ever be as memorable as the live action movies, but once they start animating the books that hadn't got made into a movie I think it would be pretty solid.
I think it will be solid if they make fregley as prominent as rowley since fregley is the character they should place confidence in

I could have lived without the play story, but there was no excuse for the Safety Patrol story to be cut. That’s literally the breaking point for Greg and Rowley’s friendship, and it’s just… not there
And instead they have zoo wee mama breaking them up? Thats the stupidest way to replace this scene i ever heard

@@bluekel615 tbh yeah, just having zoo wee mama break them up, like in the new movie Greg has the new cartoonist job and isnt happy because for some reason the school was like "lets change it to something educational" and then everyone laughed at Greg for making that Cartoon that wasn't supposed to be EDUCATIONAL and then goes to see everyone saying zoo wee mama and then Greg gets pissed off and fights Rowley and says that he stole the comic Greg made. imo it was the school wh broke them up in the first place because if the school didnt change it then Greg would still have the job and be happy with it and ignore Rowley with his Zoo Wee Mama comic unless it randomly over-populates Greg's Comics.
Yea that part does bother me a bit. The comic scene from the original film and first book was the start of the breaking point between Greg and Rowley which eventually kept straining their relationship even further apart until the climax of the mother and son dance (although that part wasn't in the book). This one just felt too sudden and didn't really have a necessary build up to that point

I think the reason the movie was so short is so the can pump out a series and hopefully get out a movie every year. Rodrick Rules is coming out next year and it'll probably be a lot shorter too.
Susan’s VA recording in her fridge went hard.
In the movie, Greg says “if your hand is bigger than your face, that means your brain is shrinking”
Instead of, “if your hand is bigger than your face it’s a sign of low intelligence”

Yeah, they changed a lot of the jokes. And instead of the second part being “hmm... im not sure, let’s try again” it’s “I don’t know, let’s try the other hand”
They changed from "Nowadays, it's a whole lot more complicated. Now it's about the kind of clothes you wear or how rich you are or if you have a cute butt or whatever" to "now its wether or not you have cool hair, and how many followers on social media"
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who thought the movie was lacking a lot of content from the book and the long wait for the movie probably wasn't worth it. It only had like half of the stuff from the book everything else was missing making the entire movie pretty lifeless. I think the live action did a much better job at representing the book while this barely did a good job of doing so. I hope Rodrick Rules does a better job at making the movie longer and representing the book more.

I like the books and the movie.
The movie itself was descent at best. Animation was good, writing was very condensed but didn’t annoy me too much, and voice acting was pretty good. Overall I give the movie a 6/10

No wonder it’s so short. I understand if they couldn’t include everything from the book, but at this point, it should’ve been more of a special or pilot instead of a movie if that’s what they’re going for.
Is it just me or Susan's voice sounds like it was recorded on zoom?
Also, I love that they learned from Sonic and cheated the mouths to one side, but I don't love how they awkwardly snap whenever the head slightly changes directions. Just pay attention to Susan (again) in the beginning where Roderick talks about the cheese touch.
They really should’ve made it a TV series.
Heck I would’ve taken an adaptation of those LLB’s (looks like book) on r/LodedDiper over this

I understand about the whole "shorter movie, less time" message it gives, and your point about the whole life outside of Greg's own is so true! I also understand that they couldn't fit in as much characters, as you discussed, Rodrick.

Edit: I just watched the new movie and it was good. Greg didn’t feel so much like a sociopath and rowley felt…. Different. Kinda like a different character but it was good. I’m gonna watch the full live action trilogy now. What? There’s no fourth live action movie. What are you talking about? Silly!
The live action TRILOGY is one of my favourite book adaptations of all time. What I loved about it is that it got better every movie. But the characters felt real too.
I like to think that the new CGI movie is more like a retelling of the story from Greg's point of view. whereas the live action movie is a more detailed depiction of his school year. The CGI animation closely matches the drawing in his diary whereas the liveaction movie is well...real life.
8/10 plus remember in the original announcement it showed that Greg was struggling to push a heavy snowball, if you remember THAT DIDNT EVEN HAPPEN IN THE MOVIE! I was really confused when I noticed it. You should make a video about it
Yeah I remember that, I thought it would be a christmas special with nothing to do with the books
The entire movie also only takes place in the fall, because the leaves on the trees are still red. Which doesn’t make sense, as Rodrick rules takes place during in the next school year, with the story revolving around Greg’s secret that happened during the summer.
I’ve definitely seen worse animation. But I thought when they were playing “Rumble Trike” the background looked a little lifeless. Maybe it’s just the style though

I think this isn’t a big deal, it looks like they’re going to be doing _all_ the books, meaning any plot-lines they skip over have time to be developed in later films. Obviously Rodrick will be the main focus of the sequel.
biggest problem with this is that Susan's dialogue is the worst quality in the world like it sounds like she recorded it in a closet that echos with an H20 delirious microphone
This movie was actually really great imo. The only problem was how rushed and short it felt, and how.... that.... THING they call Manny Heffley looked....
When I watched it, it was surprised by the lack of story. It did cover many iconic things from the book, but it felt unfinished to me. And I found it weird that Freggly was the only redhead in the whole movie, because he is another example of the trope of redheads being weird, weak, cringey, ugly, or losers. Male redheads just don't have the best on-screen representation in my opinon. And I feel that it presented him as more lonely and desperate for a friend rather than gross like he was in the book. Rowley was presented okay and Greg didn't feel sociopathic enough (there are really convincing fan theories about Greg being a sociopath and Manny being a psychopath). It also left out many important side characters, which was annoying. The animation looked good through, and I feel that it would have worked better as a longer movie or an episodic series that more closely follows the plot from the books. But yeah, that's what I thought of it.
And also, Disney hates jerks and short-tempered but caring parents. They just treating Greg like an extremely better person, forcing Frank and Susan to be like Disney parents, and more.
A shame for sure. Such is the case for most book based movies. However this movie looks like it was done well, so it's alright
Dang, I when I think of the first book, the plot lines that come to mind are wrestling, the Safety Patrol, and the play. Strange how they left them out. Still a solid special though.
While I did enjoy the movie, I feel like it should’ve been a lot longer so a lot of these scenes didn’t get cut tbh
I've only recently become familiar with this franchise. I was always aware of it. I grew up hanging out with Jeff at my cousin's house in the 70's and 80's. Ironically enough, when I last caught up with him (2002ish) he told me he was working on a kid's web comic and I told him it was going to faceplant. Boy was I wrong. 16 books and several movies later, it looks like he's established something great here! Way to go Jeff!
I watched the Disney+ movie just for kicks the other day. It was surprisingly enjoyable!
I think that the live action is 100% better but I feel that they did try on the animation and it probably would of been harder too but also, since they are doing Rodrick rules next year, they probably will do the other books that we haven’t seen as movies too like cabin fever or the ugly truth!

Am I the only one growing to really like the animation style? Aside from Rodrick's design, the peanuts looking style is starting to really grow on me.

This was good and I'm looking forward to more animated adaptations of hopefully all the books. But I can't ignore the fact that so much is cut out, making the live action movie still better. However, I do like the animation style matches the books perfectly to a tee! We'll have to see what Rodrick Rules brings, hopefully it'll be longer, but doubtful it'll be better. Because nothing will be able to beat my favorite line in that movie...

I wish they had done something more original with the story, rather than just animating the first book. Why couldn't they just make a movie about another book? I don't see the point of watching this since I've already read the book and watched the live action version.
this is why im glad theres a sequel. i hope they make more for all the books, having them be shorter could allow for them to make more movies without making them seen overdone, because the world is a lot less developed and you want to see more of it in following movies

Without the school play and the safety patrols part the movie felt so... empty. Like I missed so many characters and most of them had very few lines that it seemed like Greg and Rowley were the only characters there.
even though a lot is missing, i can see why. we all know the story of the first diary of a wimpy kid, so i understand why certain things weren’t explained since we already knew them

I overall liked the movie, and I really liked the parts they added. But, all the main characters being bald compared to the other kids in the school and the lack of Rodrick was a little distracting.

I would give the movie a 7/10. I loved the Easter eggs and references to other books like the Goat Man(a reference to The Meldown). I also liked the voice acting and the animation. Greg was nicer to Rowley in this version, which was interesting. I also liked the return of Fregley. Other than the short runtime, I didn't like how Rodrick had little screen time. I also was happy that Chirag returned in this movie, but he had a very small role.
The worst part about the movie is the lack of rodrick
I work at the studio that did the animation, so I'm glad ppl seem to at least like that part😂 I didn't work on it though, so I can't say why it was short or why things were cut or not. I'm sure there were many reasons
Not only have they cut a lot but they also replaced some scenes like how in the og movie the way Greg makes the Teenagers mad is by scratching their car while in the new movie they make the Teenagers mad by just leading them to a river and breaking the tire but it wasn't Greg's fault since the Teenagers decided to go to the river since they already had a view of seeing Greg and Rowley jumping over a gap, and the most obvious change is the ending about how Greg lied about himself having the cheese touch and in the og movie he isn't really happy with it and just pass it off to another guy but in the new movie Greg is really happy to have to the Cheese Touch because apparently he has space to get like in Cafeteria Before: He had to sit up on stage. After: He can sit in an empty lunch table because of his Cheese Touch. But this entire paragraph doesn't mean like I hate the movie because I actually love the movie because of some of the changes but still lots of changed scenes.

This also happened to the Phantom Blood movie, which cut most of the plot of part 1 in the film and even removed some characters, such as speedwagon, Dire, and Straizo.
MY FAVORITE SCENE ISN'T THERE AND IT WAS MENTIONED. ON PAGE 42, IT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT RODRICK APOLOGIZING ABOUT HAVING THE MAGAZINE.
Im treating this as a long form episode (like Adventure Time Distant Lands) seeing as we are getting more Wimpy kid soon....
to be honest with you zach was a great actor for greg and when i read a wimpy kid book in my head i hear his voice reading it im not even kidding..
The first time we heard about this movie, we see Greg trying to make the big snowball. This never happened
I think this movie would've been more visually interesting if it was stop motion, or had a lower frame rate, something like the Peanuts Movie. The animation seems too smooth for the art style.
Definitely feel like the run time is what kept the movie from reaching its full potential. Since it seems like Disney Plus is already in the process of making an animated Roderick Rules movie, hopefully it will be better than it’s predecessor. (But there’s no way it will surpass live action Roderick Rules)

Its still great, its funny, fun, and an interesting take on the doawk franchise, sure it cuts out a lot of story but i think it kept it fresh, instead of being an animated version of something we already had.
8/10. Good animation, but lots of cuts and some interactions like the pe teacher telling the teenagers to go away felt unnatural. :P Also the voice actors were actually good unlike *cough* *cough* Long Haul.

I feel like they could done better. Like add more to the extra school subject or had a play they mention about but never went to the play. And my rating would be 6/10
Well, I guess I was wrong. Sounds like it also suffers the same issues the live action adaptation had.
However, with such a limited timeline of less than an hour, it was kind of expected, though.

I believe this is because they only want you to understand how this will look on the new new movie cabin fever which is gonna also be animated so they want you to just understand that’s the movie
I feel the animation looks a bit on the cheaper side, so I like to imagine Greg made this movie with a free trial on Blender and any scene that didn't make it was because it expired before he can work on them
This movie feels more like a tv show than a movie. (Yes I know there making a tv show).
But here are some thing I would improve.
- Just copy the first 3 movies word from word. But at the same time add some new things.
- make the characters more expressive in the movement and make the settings feel lived in add more things in the back ground like people and brids. And make the school feel like a middle school like the movies. Anyway that how would improve theme.
But I still like the movie 8/10.
