That'd be because greg is an unreliable narrator and has probably altered the truth in every diary to make himself look better (which he can't even do well in the first place, mind you.)
Greg looks like an asshole in his own book, and he wrote it 😂. Rowley's too pure to not try and paint greg as good as possible and he looks 3x worse, so imagine someone like Rodrick writing a book

It's funny how different movie Greg and book Greg are. While yes, both are asshole, Greg in the films learned how important Rowley was to him and while remaining an asshole acted like a better friend in the next 2 films. Greg in the books learned he was dependent on Rowley and kept using him

This book in a nutshell: rowley wants to write a story and comes up with clever and creative ideas for the plot and Greg wants it to be all about him as well as take all the credit for it despite it being rowleys idea.

Greg would've been a good guy if his parents didn't favour Manny, Rodrick didn't use him as a toy, and if Manny treated him as an older brother and not someone else. But I think towards the conclusion of the series, Rowley will leave him for good, Greg's life will fall apart, and he'll start to show some character development

Jeff Kinney did a great job of showing how a kid’s boosted self-image of themselves (Greg) can destroy a innocent, friendly kid.
"Destroy" is a bit strong of a word considering Rowley barely if at all notices Greg's abuse and manipulation. But Greg egocentric view of the world and treatment of his only friend like he's little more than a talking pet does cause Rowley quite a bit of problems and chagrin
Greg's spotlight is dimming. His actions will catch up with him eventually and the consequences will be dire. In the end rowley wins because he will come out as a more respectable man than greg ever will. Sad that his perspective is clouded, it would be nice to actually see someone point out to him how much of an asshole greg is.

I hope the Diary of Wimpy Kid finale is Greg in high school, and he finally matured. He no longer tortures or manipulates Rowley, and he finally helps him out a long with other friends. The story ends with him and Rowley having successful families because Rowley was always beloved while Greg learnt his lesson.
Small theory: Greg wanting to the story to all be about himself could be because his parents spoil his younger brother and let him get away with anything. And him bullying Rowley not only is something his older brother does to him and he wanted to have someone he is older than to project the bullying onto but Manny is protected by his parents so he choose Rowley to pick on
A valid point. While it doesn’t excuse his actions, it makes sense. Roderick gets to bully and scam Greg constantly, while Manny is treated like a prince. Greg’s a textbook middle child, and he’s created this inner fantasy where he’s the most important person. Unfortunately, this leads him to treat everyone around him like dirt, and creates constant problems. If he just stopped to think about how his actions affect his family and friends, he might have a change of heart.

@@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 Certain moments in the books like manny being a brat and never getting in trouble (similar to most younger siblings) or how greg is always rejected by girls and is victim to so many weird situations would make greg seem relatable to an average middle/high school student. It's also the reason why people would say they hate greg but they also love greg at the same time. They hate him because of how terrible of a person he is and how self centered he is but they love him because you can relate to him at certain times.

When I read this book and Greg said “they’re gonna have to hire a bunch of big strong men to play the part of Garg” I imagined a buff model in the movie saying something like “Garg hungry” in a smexy voice (I scarred myself for life)

I wanna see two books, one by Greg and one by Rowley, and the plot line is about how the two split up. The friendship ends. How would the two describe it? Who would've initiated it? Is it surprising to Greg that Rowley never comes back to him?
Ok Greg did kind of help with Rowley’s fantasy novel up to a point. Greg making Rowley put more characters in the party is a good call, however that’s where Greg’s good deeds end.
There was also a part where Greg suggested they copyright the word 'kind' so no one else could use it in their stories. I mean, that's a bit much, even for him.
The only time Greg did something nice for Rowley just for being a good friend without telling him he owns him or anything was when he took the blame for the bleached walls himself in Cabin Fever

Plot twist: Rowley likes to help people instead of having power. He just wanted some importance in the adventure book he made.
It should be noted that the art style Rowley’s book uses isn’t Rowley’s art style but Greg’s interpretation of Rowley’s art style. It’s the same we see Greg use when talking about Rowley’s drawings and why would Greg let Rowley draw in his diary.

The story was probably a little bit interesting but then it got more interesting with the plot twist with the Wizard at the end.
I realize the sad truth that Greg is really toxic and tries to be cool and doesn’t have fun
He probably doesn’t realize the damage that does to others.
I know it's just a story, but it's extremely frustrating how much of a parasite Greg is on Rowley and how Rowley will never realize because of how dense and innocent he is. I wish Rowley would permanently leave Greg and have him realize that if it weren't for Rowley, he wouldn't have anyone around who actually liked him.

The book actually gets better to me after a lot of Greg’s suggestions, even though the intentions were really bad and a full Greg book wouldn’t be good, either. The romance and death and meeting of other characters was really fun

I used to read diary of a wimpy kid all the time. Now that I'm older I reread some of them and greg freaks me out fr. I think movie greg has more character development, but book greg is the canon and official greg so idk anymore. lol. I still love the story but greg is very problematic. Rodrick is the true hero of the Heffley family!
