the main character becomes slightly better at the end of the movie in comparison to the books, but in general, this is one of the most loyal book-to-movie adaptations out there. it's not an exact copy (the girl played by chloe grace mortez isn't in the books), but it has the exact same vibe.
Yeah in the books Greg's comes off way more like a jerk

No, I don't think so. It's hard to compare, but in the book he doesn't seem stupid either. It's not easy for him in the family
@@powerstar6501 Yeah his family is definitely.... not great. Greg is kind of a terrible person in the books though, like how he learns nothing from the bad things he does, his willingness to throw Rowley under the bus, and how he's constantly willing to do ANYTHING to be cool for like a week.
@@Elegantly_Bored Yeah due to the episodic nature of the books, Greg's character doesn't really develop much at all. It works for the comedy but when you look back it's like damn, this kid sucks.

This most impressive thing about these Wimpy Kid films and particularly this film is the casting choices they made. I’m glad they didn’t go with what a lot of middle school based shows and films do nowadays and cast actors in their late teens to early 20s. Zachary Gordon perfectly fit the age to play Greg Heffley.

Holy shit, yes. That’s what’s been on the tip of my tongue as I’ve been watching this guys’ videos on all these kids movies I grew up watching.
What happened to actual child actors being prevalent and playing roles their age? This world is going down a dark fucking path, man. Kids are getting brainwashed with this encapsulation of mature themes. The internet is only making it worse and worse. It’s always something blatantly mature or portraying itself as “not mature”/“having teenage/child characters” despite the obvious grown ass adult actors/mature themes; it’s complete brain numbing nonsense. “Kids Shows” these days are there just to distract your child and get them out of your hair, teaching them practically nothing- no real, beneficial life lessons. Your children are basically looking at a black, blank screen, whatever it is being called “child entertainment” (for example: “Modern” SpongeBob… eugh… no remote intelligence in any aspect anymore in that shit). Either that or kids are being taught concepts and ideals they simply don’t need to know about at their age. Like gender propaganda, political views, etc., etc.- they just don’t need to know or be exposed to any of that shit.
Real
Ya know...I never would've compared this movie to Mean Girls, but once Alex said it, it totally makes sense. The style of filming and the jokes and drama is definitely similar. I wonder if any of the writers were involved in making this. Both movies are really iconic.

@@minfires7572 Yes. It's ridiculous.
@@llawliet6262 Don't do it. It's not your decision to break them up. If anything they'll say that you're being intrusive if you try to do it (the couple). Tell your older sister that she's being abusive by hitting you and blackmailing you to make this decision. Also, how close are you to the 21 year old, if she's just an acquaintance then I don't see how you can give her advice on her own decision to marry the person.
If the 21 year old actually seems like she's being abused in the situation then give her advice only if she asks for it (as a friend, when you get to know her better). But after that there's not much you can do about them; especially if she chose to marry person.
Also, although it sounds nuts some people can be in loving relationships despite the fact that they have huge age gaps, but that actually depends on the relationship itself. Honestly, these type of relationships are rare mainly, but there are very rare cases where the people are actually in love. Besides there are different strokes for different blokes.
Also, I would suggest praying for the person too, while giving them advice if the person is actually in an abusive relationship. Because at the end of the day it comes down to the 21 year olds decision.
Tell your older sister that it's not right that she would hold your living situation over your head for not doing what she wants. Because honestly that's not right. If she does it now then she'll probably try to do it more times in the future if you let it slide.
Also, ask if her if she's okay because if she's reacting that strongly to the 21 year olds situation then there might be something triggering to her about it, and she might need to talk about it. Because maybe she has a trauma that she hasn't spoken about.
However, I'm not saying that it's an excuse for hitting you like that because it's not. If you feel really threatened by anything like that again then I'd suggest moving to your parents or other family members home because her hitting you is not okay.
However, if you guys patch things up then I'd suggest that your older sister has more open communication with you. Also, I know it isn't easy to speak up for yourself, but make sure you let her know how her reaction (the slapping and blackmailing) makes you feel.
If she disregards that and how serious it was that she did that, then just move to your other families house or back to your house with your parents because that type of behavior is abusive. And you don't deserve that.

In fairnes, the illustrations in the DoaWK books are supposed to be done by Greg. I wouldn't put it past Greg to give people he doesn't like intentionally ugly features in his journal, even to the point of it being features they don't actually have.
Something I truly love about this trilogy, is that it really feels real. The plot isn’t unrealistic and it feels like this could happen to any one, any where! The reason the books do so well is for this reason!

That aged cheddar
I find myself liking this movie more as I get older. When I was younger I heavily focused on how rude and abusive a lot of the characters were, and even though I understood it as *the point* it was still a bit upsetting to watch how mean everyone is. Now that I'm older I can acknowledge that but also notice how it's a commentary on it, not an endorsement!
@Bröther May I Have Some Lööps when did they ever say that? I mean hey i know kids that are stupid enough to act out what they see in games, dont be stupid and you're fine

As an autistic guy who grew up with an abusive step father I can say that him beating me only made me an insecure child with no self esteem whatsoever, I never got aggresive towards my schoolmates, in fact I barely had any friends because I just wanted to be alone, it left me severe psychological issues in which I feel like trash and has gotten me to toxic relationships which hurt me even more, so yeah, not every kid getting beaten by his stepfather becomes a bully
In fact writing this comment has made me feel better
I think Alex was writing from personal experience and trauma, but again, trauma is different for everyone, but it's nice that you felt better writing that comment
I really hope you’re doing better now💙
Hope you are better and that you find the right person to care about you. I hope that you are able to talk to someone and get help
🙏🏻
It was a fair generalization to make, it's not uncommon for people who are abused in one aspect of their life to become abusive in another. But it's also kind of you to talk about your own situation so people don't start to get a one size fits all mindset about people (specifically children in this case) who are abused. I'm glad writing about it made you feel better
6:10 Prolly the most backhanded compliment in kids movie history XDXD
I’m torn on who has it the “worst” in middle school…
As the movie pointed out, the boys all either look 7 or 17, then you’re judged/mocked relentlessly for it, you have to pee next to each other and your locker rooms are basically mini ThunderDome.
As for the girls……
That’s when about 98% of us have our reproductive systems turn into ticking timebombs -just waiting for the perfect nightmare scenario to make us suddenly feel like we’re dying from a burst appendix, then embarrass and traumatize us with the unexpected crimson tidal wave.
Eventually followed by the slow, horrifying realization that you’ll have to worry about this happening to you every 2-3 weeks…month in and month out…for like….another 30+ years or so….
Gawd, yeah-middle school is just the absolute worst.
I genuinely feel bad for all kids in that age bracket. It’s WAY worse than high school!! 🤣🤦♀️

I really enjoyed this movie and I just want to point out a few things.
1. Angie's character was totally unnecessary in this movie and she's pretty annoying, good thing she doesn't show up for the sequels.
2. Greg Heffley is a HORRIBLE friend and he doesn't deserve Rowley.
3. The Disney reboot is an actual SIN and deserves to be called a crime to this franchise.
Other than that, great movie☺️
1. Totally. She probably would have been a better character if the actress who player her could be in the sequels. She basically just disappears into thin air and it adds to the unnecessity of her character.
2. It gets hard to watch in the first movie, but in the sequels the character development is more apparent and he's only occasionally an asshole.
3. All reboots of this series are sins.
Don't disrespect chloe like that

Thanks I wasn’t about to sit through that
Let’s be honest, Greg was the real villain of these movies
So true, especially towards Rowley
he was everything i hate in a human person
Yeah Greg was very antagonistic and selfish, but when compared to the Greg from the original books who was very unlikable and sociopathic, at least the Greg from the Live-Action films played by Zachary Gordon made him more likable and empathetic without being sociopathic.
I’m 20 and my co-worker is 21 and she is married to a 58 year old man. They have been dating for a year. I personally find the age gap gross and I overheard her talking about it. I just told her that if she needs to talk to someone or if her marriage fails then I will help her if she wants it. I think their relationship is gross. I told my sister about my day and when I told her about the age gap she flipped out. She started cussing me out for not doing more and not trying to do more about it. I told her that I talked to her and I told her I would be there for her but that wasn't enough for my sister. She wants me to physically break them up. I have talked to her multiple times but she keeps telling me to leave her alone. My sister told me that I need to stalk them and break into their house and assault the boyfriend. She said if I don’t do that she will kick me out and that if I can’t break the couple up before the month is over she will kick me out. I told her this really isn’t our business and I just want to focus on work and school but she doesn’t care and she slapped me when I said “This really isn’t our business” What should I do?

As someone who just finished middle school last year, I can say with 100% confidence that Alex depicted middle school perfectly.

@karolin I have the hots for Rodrick. Fanfiction about him has certainly helped with that
When you're kid, you think greg is right, but when you're older, you realize Rodrick was the most sane out of the family.
I really enjoyed the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books as a kid and thought the movie was funny when it came out when I was ten. To this day I think the actors are perfect for the characters. Honestly, I'm surprised that there are so many movies. I only remember two existing and recently learned of the animated one.

So my main problem with the live-action movies is that they were too “cartoonish” and focused on potty humor, and the recent animated one was too “serious”, had a very short runtime, and didn’t take full advantage of being a cartoon. I like the books and think they can translate well to film, but they just can’t make it work in a way that benefits the medium they’re working in

As a middle schooler I can confirm rodricks advice is true, I suffered my first year for these reasons and then almost lost all my friends

I am from Germany and read all of these books as a kid too and liked it a lot. What really surprised me when I saw this video is that Gregs best friend is originally called Rowely. I never realized he had a different name in the english version than in the german one (Rupert) and I dont get why they would change it in the first place, bc it isn’t even a German name…
Anyways, great video and love your channel :)

This is one of my favorite Diary of A Wimpy Kid adaptations and even though it's Live-Action it does capture the Spirit and humor of the original books by Jeff Kinney, not to mention the actors playing the characters are perfectly casted especially Rodrick.
Even it's worth noting that this film was my introduction to Chloë Grace Moretz's work as an actress and that the character she played in the film, Angie was created specifically in the film and wasn't in the original book.

I like how Greg is depicted in these 3 films. From the beginning he’s definitely the average person who just wants to fit in and be accepted. He clearly does care about Rowley, but he doesn’t make the right choices, however I can’t blame him for trying to get Rowley to not say “come over and play” out loud.He makes a lot of bad choices this film, but for one his brother is constantly telling him things that influence his idea of how to act, and his parents aren’t particularly there for him.
In the second he’s clearly learned lessons, because this time he is quite a good friend to Rowley but learns to get along with Roderick and even volunteers to be Rowleys assistant to help him.
In the third he tries to make his dad proud and to seduce Holly, but shows serious change such as when the scout master asks who did this he doesn’t let his friends take the blame, he immediately tells him that he did.And at the end he’s fixed his relationship with his friend, become more selfless and responsible, and he’s worked his way up to getting towards a relationship with Holly.
Yep I love these movies! And you described Greg to a tee! 😊

The first three movies (and the actual books themselves) are literally so iconic. Idk what the hell that fourth one was tho, we don’t talk about that one…
Simple. The original child actors were officially too old to keep going on as the characters, so they had to recast.
Long Haul was one of the best books in the entire series. The movie added so much unnesicary stuff.

Fair enough, since they're kids, but there have been so many great child actors out there and the ones in the fourth film weren't good at all. At least I've heard the twins playing Manny in Long Haul weren't as difficult as the ones in the first few films.
