Yeah I think it’s generally good advice. But also don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Like if it took you too long to change your kid’s diaper or you forgot a kid’s [insert thing here] is tomorrow, then it’s fine. Psychologists say that having some bad experiences is good for someone’s developmental growth. Also raise your kid to be kind.
Wait I thought everyone just knew this advice?

Devon Bostick - Rodrick is one of those perfect casting calls that gets made every so often. Where you can't imagine anyone else playing them and you'll always associate the actor with the character and vice versa.

I know so many kids movies/shows ignore character development, even as a kid this frustrated me
One of the best parts about Dog Days tbh.

This movie follows the books most faithfully. The books are literally just a bunch of small developments that happen in this guys life, but jumbled together since it's supposed to be written chronologically. They rarely have a single plot thread throughout, and that's realistic because most of us never have just one thing going on. We have multiple worries and developments to worry about.
ON POINT
We’re on the same page
Diary of a Wimpy Kid was my guilty pleasure in middle school. Something about Greg's narcissistic/nihilistic attitude resonated with him - he felt 100x more real than other middle school protagonists.
Honestly, I feel like there kinda WAS a point to this movie. The first movie focused on Greg bettering his relationship with Rowley, the second on bettering his relationship with his brother, and his third is about him bettering his relationship with his dad.
Unlike the books, Greg has his voice change and sorta gets the girl, which is actually really wrong because Greg is basically in that pre pubescent purgatory that wimpy kids relate to.

The Diary Of A Wimpy Kid trilogy (yes, trilogy. The Long Haul doesn't count) is easily the best adaptation of a book series I've ever seen. The movies by themself may not be anything special but the movies as an adaptation are. It's very rare that you see an adaptation that is this exact to the original source material and that's why I love these movies so much
Ever watched Harry Potter? Just wondering cause those are imo best adaptation
@@comebackstealing5913 also lord of the rings trilogy
@@comebackstealing5913 I've watched the movies but I've never read the books so I don't know how the two compare. Meanwhile, I lived off the DOAWK books as a child and grew up up with the movies as they were coming out
@@comebackstealing5913 While the Harry Potter movies are great, I'm not sure if they would be considered good adaptations from the OP's point of view since they start to deviate from the books more and more as the series progresses. The first two movies are very close to the books. The rest of them, not so much.
I don't think a movie needs to be just like the source material to be considered a good adaptation. Movies and books are different mediums. Some things may work in one format and not so much in the other. Knowing what to remove or change is essential. A good adaptation for me transforms the book into the best cinematic experience possible without betraying what made the book special in the first place.
@@comebackstealing5913 Ong these guys must be joking
This is the perfect trilogy and I won't have any slander. The casting is perfect and you feel like these people could be a real family. In each Greg has character development and growth. He learns a lesson in each. It has great advice for people Greg's age

Honestly I really liked how Greg and Holly actually maintained a good relationship despite many obstacles like Patty also being friends with Holly and Holly finding out Greg lied
Peyton is a great actress too
From Holly to Emma in Jessie to Tory in Cobra Kai
yess
I love her in Cobra Kai. Tori is the complete opposite of Holly and it's strange to go back and watch DoAWK after seeing her role in Cobra Kai.
The reason for the vignette style presentation of the movies is that it's based on the book series by the same title, and in it the different stories were told through journal entries from different days, so the vignettes make sense. The first movie tried to make those into a more cohesive narrative, at least to me, while after that the movies became more direct adaptations, just taking the bigger stories and slapping them together
If you really think about it rodrick was the only normal one through the entire series. He was always portrayed as the mean older brother when all the things he did were mostly harmless pranks
Literally though, like everyone else in the family is legitimately a terrible person. Meanwhile Roderick is just at best a fun guy, and at worst a bit of a dick.
And I mean the latter is something he'll probably grow out of when he's older.
Rodrick did nothing wrong, i will die on this hill
Yeah that's one of the best parts of this series (and the books), it's all from Greg's POV and people like Rodrick and Patty aren't actually that bad when you see more of them
💯😩🥰
@@Ep8Script I'd go further: none of them are as bad as Greg portrays them.
Greg is exaggerating things (or leaving some things he feels make him look bad) out, and we're none the wiser to what really happened because this entire story is told to us by him. His dad wasn't really ripping wires out of the TV (or maybe he was, but because Greg did something FAR worse than spend a day gaming), however throughout the events of Dog Days, Greg is annoyed with his father and portraying him accordingly.
This would also explain why Greg seems to interact so little with Holly when he has the chance: he is, he's just awkwardly turning most of their interactions into cringefests, so he leaves most of them out.
EDIT: Also I feel Greg is rather self-critical. There's no reason why anyone would at all like the kind of person Greg sells himself as, so it seems likely he's a decent, regular person (with a perchance for lying sometimes) with an habit of being self-critical. So basically, I think everyone in DoaWK is a normal person, we're just seeing the world as Greg sees it, biases very much included.
OK, but Devon Bostick as Roderick made this series entirely enjoyable - he's honestly hilarious! (I also kinda liked the family dynamic. Somehow they really did feel like a family!)

What planet does this movie take place on?
Honestly, if they wanted to adapt the Wimpy Kid book series, they should have done a TV series where every book or 2 is is a season. But considering how the series still ain't over, who knows when it'll end with Greg Heffley finally learning for once.
Those book to tv series are always low key terrible, but I really wonder what it would look like with this series.
@@superultragiggachigga , personally I think it would take sort of a Seinfeld/Ed, Edd n Eddy route. You can have Greg, Rowley, or any other characters doing all sorts of shenanigans similar to in the book, yet every route they take turns into disaster at the end of every episode, with Greg not learning his lesson. Let’s start with book one for example. The episodes can each be about events that happened during each month (September-May).
First 1-2 can be about Greg having to settle in middle school.
Second can be events taking place on Halloween (including the gang chasing them).
Third can be about Greg join wrestling and the school play.
Fourth can be about Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Fifth can be about Greg breaking Rowley’s arm, joining Independent Study and Safety Patrol.
Sixth can be the snowball incident and joining the cartoon newspaper.
Seventh can be about Greg lying to Rowley about the Safety Patrol incident, getting kicked off, and their friendship is broken.
Eighth will be Rowley and new friends and Greg thinking about whether or not he need him anymore.
And the ninth will be about Greg seeing Rowley getting more popular than he is, leading to the two to fight, only for the gang from Halloween to return and make Rowley eat the c****e, but Greg takes the blame for it and the two’s friendship.
Altogether, that’s about 11 to 12 episodes, some of them probably will get split into two segments. But that’s the general premise for each season. But depending on how author Jeff Kinney wants to end the series, Will probably the more difficult choice, since the final book needs to be Greg learning his lesson or not.

“Girls like stories about horrific murders and pimple popping”
I feel attacked… Did this man look at my watch history?
I find it funny how alot of complaints of the movies are elements of the books that were given praise the journal format of random events the movies try to give the characters arcs and that's why the long haul stands out so much its because it essential reverses Greg back to the first movie again
13:03 What was what my grandpa used to say? "When did they start letting those people in the pool?" Hahaha!! WOW! 😆 😂 I laughed SOO loud! Same with when he looked in the yearbook and the girls phone number wasn't finished 😅
I agree that the third movie is more childish in a sense BUT when you think about it, the entire thing is meant to come from a teenage boys diary. Read ANYONES diary (especially at that age) and it'll essentially be like this movie bc of the inconsistency lol. ALSO Love this channel so much bc 1. He's hilarious and 2. he watches the dumb movies/shows so I don't have to🤣
Teenage boy is a stretch, I would say a preteen boys perspective. Since the series starts with an 11-year-old Greg and recounts his 3 years spent in middle school. I think it ends there since if the character were to get any older, it would lose it's general feel.
4:21 has anyone else notised that he just hold the popcorn all the time and never eats it🤣
Lol
When reading the books and growing older... I realized Rodrick was the normal one, Greg is a narcissist and or sociopath, Manny is just a manipulative pain the Mum is a narcissist too and the Dad is just there, not that bad tbf
I wonder if Greg was always like that or if Manny being born and getting all of Frank and Susan's time (and eventually being a manipulative little weasel) caused him to become more obsessed with attention and popularity.
Igreg is too young to say he is that. But rodrick is better emotional ajusted and ok i believe greg eventually grows out of that and has issues from his mom?!
But yeah rodrick is bae
@@marocat4749 Apparently signs of narcissism can show at 2yrs old. Greg is what? 13? He could definitely be old enough. ASPD can show signs at 3, and be monitored.
I thought this movie was alright. Like as an adaptation I think it works. The books are sorta stuck in time and Greg doesn’t have a lot of dynamic movement so as an adaptation for the book fans, I think it does a great job.
"Evil Warlock Punishes Gingers" 😂😂
I totally agree with you Alex. The first movie almost gives off the same vibes the show Ned’s Declassified did; funny and still appealing to an adult audience. I hate it when they dumb down a series when they can make it relatable with some slightly exaggerated antics.
That's not what happened. The Books are supposed to be a series of random events that are loosely connected to make it feel like an actual kid's diary. It can be hare to adapt that into a movie. Because movies have more of a 3 act structure.
@@icecreamhero2375 I get that. But they dumbed it down bc the book material was still open enough to interpretation where they could make the events sequential and add stuff in between to make it flow. The diary entry method would work better for TV episodes, not a movie where things have to be continuous.
@@RoKer13 I get your point, but for me and many people, this worked fantastically as a movie, and it did have a continuous main plot of trying to win over Holly and fix things with his Dad
@@oklol7799 Don't get me wrong, I still liked this movie, but the first one just seems more fleshed out to me. Anything with the original cast I would still watch.
I don't know what people are talking about - there are only 3 Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movies. Only 3. That's it.
I honestly can’t even believe he skipped when Greg spun the thing when Rowley played “I love you beacuase” and Greg landed on Rowleys dad.
"When did they start letting those people in to our public pools" got me lol.
Gotta say, after a two-year covid pandemic and with a possible monkeypox pandemic around the corner, seeing Rowley's family share the same ice cream cone felt like Tom Six had directed a Disney Channel original movie for a second there.
You know... if its your family theres no point in trying to be safe. If they got it, you definetly have it too. Its inevitable

Dad: Summer is meant for healthy stuff. like, uhhhh....... Swimming.
Me: (In a bacteria infested pool with human excrement, pizza, eclairs, diapers (not the loaded type) and god knows what else... Really dad that is healthy???)
"Have a great summer. You are such a good friend" SO generic and Greg basically thought he was in based on that...she probably left the phone number unfinished because she couldn't think of a fake one fast enough 😂
Alex: Dog day's is embarrassingly dumb
Wimpy kid Long haul: Am I a joke to you!?
I will say, it seems like a series of small stories because that’s how the books were.
I see your point when you said you would have liked the movies to age up with the characters, and I would agree that the sequels aren't as great as the original; however, I think the lack of character growth is the point. People aren't going to permanantly change overnight, and there is beauty in Greg having to continiously relearn the same lessons about family and being less selfish. Too many movies and tv shows have characters go through full character arcs and never have a moment where they struggle to actually stick with the change, but Greg definitely does not only because he is human but also because he's a kid. Good video!
I think there is some clear character development though. Also I think the second and third movies are way better than the original
There’s some development with Greg and Rodrick because they start getting along after Rodrick Rules and Greg stops antagonizing him so much.
