I have one and had some fun with it. I haven’t had it out lately. I am a know code extra that in my later years seem to be a ten WPM code person . It helped me keep up with the code.

I like prepcomm, but i think this would be great for my dad who is not a ham in a shtf situation. I wish my brain decoded like their radios.

Just wanna point out that you could send several _SOS_ calls in the time it would take to send "CQ Mayday", and _SOS_ is actually the proper procedural for a morse distress call.

Been seeing vids about PreppComm for a few years. Their stuff is pretty sweet. 73!

I think it is definitely something everyone should look at for their bug out kit. The radio, roll up keyboard, battery, and small antenna can be stowed in a faraday bag and put in your pack.

Thanks for the presentation. This seems like a very nice rig in the hands of an experienced CW op. There are a couple of concerns I have though. For example, how durable is the touch screen? Your interviewee also mentioned EMP. How well protected is that OLED screen and the sensitive microcontroller to EMP? Also, with a lot of new CW ops using straight key how accurate would the Morse interpreter be assuming the CW op sends perfectly timed code? One minor point I would like to raise as well is that CW ops use SOS and not CQ MAYDAY to send a distress message. MAYDAY is used on phone. Otherwise a fascinating, if pricey, piece of gear.

I like the device, but I cannot help but point out the humor of "Repeaters and infrastructure can fail in emergencies so it is best to have HF devices that don't need to rely on functional infrastructure. Here use my fancy computer" I do love the device and I love the innovation even more, just wanted to share the laugh.

I hear what you are saying, but if i remember right, there is no fancy computer involved. I believe there are 3ish internal microprocessors that drive all of the functionality of the radio. I think that is in line with any portable radio on the market.

@@GraymanPOTA well, I thought it was funny but I hope my comment didn't detract or discourage. It is an interesting device.

As someome learning morse code i cant buy one of these because it's too big of a crutch. Lol. Good news for non- cwers.

I tend to agree, but everyone learns in different ways so I would not completely discount it. If you look at it from a different perspective, it is a good tool to have on hand until you become functionally proficient in code under stress. Kinda like going out and working your first CW or Phone POTA pileup as a new operator. As stress is induced on someone, their field of focus narrows and things that they are not proficient in without thinking fall to the waist side.

You "preppers" are AFU. Some of you preach CB, some FRS, some GMRS, and about 1 in 100 know CW. For the record, I believe the FCC getting rid of the CW requirement for amateur radio was STUPID Who do you think you will communicate with, as you all hunker in your bunker? You all gonna trade MRE's back and forth? Me? I don't have to worry!!! I'm 75!!!

@@GraymanPOTA I understand your "it's still better than your no video", but that doesn't make John wrong. youtube is playing this as 1080, but the video quality looks closer to 480. the audio wasn't cleaned up at all, which it could be with even free software like audacity or automatic options if you have an nvidia card in your editing PC. I also understand if you don't do any of that because it's outside your realm of knowledge.
but the man still isn't wrong in his basic evaluation that the video looks like it was shot on a phone from 2005, and the audio isn't anywhere near clean.
and sure, you can ignore that.
and it'd be like a student ignoring feedback from a professor or even the public, saying "I don't care what you say, I'm making my art!" ..
I mean.. okay. you're also ignoring feedback. which is your right. but maybe.. just maybe.. there's something to be learned from the feedback and.. with very little effort.. the quality of your product (videos) can be improved.
and maybe you don't care about the quality of your videos.
because.. why would the inability to make a clean sounding and looking video in 2024 make anyone think that the technology product you are selling in that video would be of inferior quality, just because you can't use basic technology to make a clean sounding/looking video, like any 7 year old can, be a reflection of the technology you've put together and want to sell for hundreds of dollars?
ir probably has no effect on sales whatsoever.
      uh-huh.
if you want examples of modern looking video, youtube is full of them. you don't need John to make one for you.
but maybe.. you just know it all already and don't need any feedback from anyone. cuz you're the best. :-)
good luck! the product seems interesting, wish I could see it better than 2005 cellphone video. :-/
