    Here in Germany, some Luthiers buy Chinese ones. Then they make changes in the cellos, they completely remake them to a proper and good quality sound. In the end, the result is the best you can imagine. At the same time, they build cellos too. I have tested some of those Chinese ones that were "updated" and the quality was very very good. However, for that type of work you need the best Luthier with many years of experience and who knows what's he doing.
    On the other hand, my true advice: go somewhere where you can test the instrument and check all details and take your teacher or a cellist with you. Don't go blind buy your first instrument.
    Be careful and avoid Amazon.

      Avoid Amazon? Why? I just heard two perfectly good cellos for short money they both fundamentally sound the same to my ears. And no I’m not a cello player but I’ve been in Professional Musician for 50 years. If you don’t like your Amazon purchase, you send it back. What could be easier? Now I’m looking at a rental page from a reputable vendor here on the East Coast in New England and you can rent a Nebel German cello with a good denza carbon fibro bow fiberglass case spirit cor Larson tongsten strings a Witner tailpiece and the winter fine tuning pegs for three months. The cost? $225 plus $40 insurance. Now I don’t know enough about shells to know whether that’s a tip top wonderful cello but it’s the best one in the store happens to offer you can rent in Eastman VC 80 for $117 plus $28 in insurance for three months. And it seems to me that for the rank beginner who knows nothing about cellos, that I would either went $175 cello for three months or just go ahead and buy one for $256. And yes it’s nice to be able to check out instruments in the stores, but maybe you’ve noticed that there’s not too many people out in public these days? I think Amazon is the best thing that’s ever happened to this country.

So I had to have one installed. You are correct. The original strings were very poor. I upgraded to a set recommended on Amazon. i am still trying to find a good sounding cello. I am still practicing. Thank you

    If possible, I would recommend renting a decent cello from a luthier for the first period of learning. That way, you can see whether you like this new hobby or not in an easier and cheaper way, for the first months. Then at the point where you make the choice to really go for it and you want to upgrade to one with an even better sound, you can buy your definitive cello (often with a discount, if you buy from the same luthier).

    • @youriemhei

      This might be good for countries with access to rentals, but in my country there are no known rental violins/ cellos so you really have to buy at least a student level instrument as part of your trial or beginner period.

I was told the instrument did not qualify for an exchange and Amazon would refund me the money when the cello was returned. I waited for more than 30 days for the refund and never got it. Contact Amazon and the process was looking like I would not get the refund. I contact the credit card bank and let them know about the issue and it was until then when Amazon send me an email indicating that Amazon will refund me the moneys.

    Yup, the inlays are the biggest no-no for me. Good idea if you can remove them but let's be honest, every cello is different so it's better to trust your teacher to place them or to place them on your own instrument with the help of a tuner. Or you can go full Ling-Ling and learn cello with no tapes o inlays at all :D

    Did the Cecilio come packaged in something besides a gig bag ? We know the transportation folks don't know this thing from every other thing they handle and don't give a hill of beens. Also if the sound post crashes in transport is that something a novice can re-seat ? I wouldn't want to be the one to ask a Luthier to fix a $300 Cello.

    • @adultcello
      @adultcello  3 года назад +5

      Hi Rand, Both cellos came in cardboard packages with special cardboard pieces inside made to help cradle the instrument and keep it securely in place during transit. So both cellos were in their canvas cases surrounded by cardboard padding when they arrived. Setting the sound post is definitely a job for an expert. Besides needing a special tool, you also want to make sure that you place it in the ideal location. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about taking a $300 cello to a luthier for a small repair if it needs one. Unless he or she is a total snob the point is that someone is starting their musical journey, which is a great thing. They'll also understand that a $300 cello may lead to a more expensive instrument down the road if learning the cello turns into a real lifelong passion. Thanks for your comment!
