I've always had a hard time analyzing my audience before speaking in public, and to be honest, I always try my best to be me without first seeing what audience I'm speaking to, like it has been in school presentations. This video explains it very well, and I will definitely use the tools and tips to be able to analyze the audience beforehand, which will allow me to transmit the message in a more successful way. I really like what you explain about how to target your audience.
Thanks for the video, Alex--and keep 'em coming! Your triangle of audience, message, and speaker specifically actually put me in mind of a concept I learned back in college called the "rhetorical situation," which (according to one formulation) consists of audience, constraints, and exigence. I think the fact that "audience" is the common denominator between the two versions shows the centrality of it to inventing and delivering a message. For my part, I always want to pick words that don't put distance between me and my listeners (so many public officials ignore this).
It’s always the Homework that matters. I always do that before I meet a person or do presentations.I liked your key words‘tailored’ ‘customised’ message for our Audience. Thank you very much for the information.
Great tips and thanks for sharing.. I face difficulty in listening to native English speakers, some times they speak fastly and not able to catch them .any tips to improve on this area. Thanks in advance
Thank you, Alex, I always get so much out of your videos. I have a video request (assuming you haven't covered this topic directly in one of your other videos, if so, let me know which one). Can you explain how to speak with confidence without coming across as a braggart or know-it-all or speaking in a condescending way? In other words, the opposite of, "You need to listen to me because I'm the one with the answers."
I'm working on a work presentation I have to do for a customer, and I want to know how I can be more considerate of my audience's concern and be truly impactful in my message as opposed to just doing it as a another job
Hi Alex, I guess it's one of those extraordinary ironies of public speaking that people are often so overwhelmed by the experience itself (stress, doubts, lack of confidence, etc.) that they actually forget how important it is to keep going back to some of the most intuitive/basic questions in the preparation process.
Off the top of my head, I can't recommend a Ted talk that uses the sequence. Those are usually informative talks or traditional persuasive talks (sometimes inspirational). You're more likely to see a Monroe's Motivated Sequence presentation as part of a pitch to an audience that asks them for something at the end. Most traditional advertisements, most fundraising campaigns, and most sales presentations use Monroe's sequence. 30- to 60- second pharmaceutical ads also do it. There's some kind of "Attention" or hook at the beginning (could be something eye-catching like a person or image), next are all of the problematic symptoms people have, next is their medication (the solution), then they help you visualize the benefits of a pain-free, sickness-free life, and then the call to action--"Ask your doctor."
Alex, does listening To ben Shapiro knowles, Matt Walsh, Obama ( those who have considerable expertise in politics) enable us as advanced learners of english to improve Our english levels?? I Want to know your advice.
If you want to fine tune your English skills, listening almost any native speakers will help. The people you mention are all intelligent and skilled speakers.
Hi Alex, love your content and enjoyed being live for today's premiere. I'm building my YT channel, and I'd be interested in videos with presentation tips geared explicitly towards RUclipsrs and/or video content creators. Your videos are already universally beneficial and applicable in this regard, but if you are interested in doing content specifically towards those groups, I think it could do very well. However, I understand if that is too narrow of a subset of your audience to make it worthwhile.
Hi, Maxwell. I don't have any video that. For that type of content, I personally follow channels like Think Media (Sean Cannell), Justin Brown's Primal Video, and Roberto Blake. There are lots of others. Essentially, my whole approach to running a channel is just to follow their advice. I don't do much unless they recommend it.
@@alexanderlyon Got you. I love those types of channels as well (Film Booth and Channel Makers are two of my favorites). I guess I was thinking more about the intersection between the kind of stuff you teach and what I learn from their channels. I feel like you've got some unique insight being both a professional speaking coach and a talented RUclipsr. (i.e., presenting in general vs. presenting on camera for RUclips and how to structure content, etc.) But I'm having a bit of trouble articulating it, so I could be barking up the wrong tree. So I'll just leave it at that.
I briefly considered making some videos that would get at that intersection. I decided not to go in that direction mainly because I just really like making videos about regular-old public speaking, leadership, and communication skills. For me, it comes down to doing my best to stay focused on what I do best.
What do you think of Dr John Campbell’s RUclips videos? He has a dedicated international audience, educating about relevant topics surrounding Covid. Once he actually munched on a bowl of sauerkraut while extolling the benefits of fermented foods. I find him relevant and engaging
No, not at all, Sergio. I'm not even sure what possible consequences you're referring to. If anything, it would probably make my channel more popular if I did those types of videos. People are constantly asking for them. But, the bottom line is that I don't really care about politics. I find it pretty boring. I don't even talk about politics with my friends much. I have zero motivation level for making videos about that. I have to make videos I'm passionate about. I'm a Communication teacher I make videos about the same stuff I teach in class: Leadership (in organizations), Workplace Communication, Communication Skills, and Public Speaking. If I'm not making videos I'm genuinely passionate about, what's the point?
@@alexanderlyon it's funny, because I hate politics as well! I just saw a video of this guy and I thought, 'wow, he seems so full of it (as do they all), and was curious as to your thoughts since you are the expert! I'm so sorry to make it a political thing!

Thanks for sharing. I didn't invent that triangle. It's based upon classical rhetoric. That's great that you studied rhetoric in college.
