Why are Republicans still supporting Donald Trump? | Anywhere But Washington

  • Despite facing multiple criminal charges, Donald Trump remains the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. But in South Carolina, a traditionally conservative southern state, a split is opening up between Trump loyalists and more moderate Republicans who are fearful of what their party has become. The Guardian’s Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone investigate.

And Martin Luther King! I agree: this was absolutely bizarre, but she was trying to construct an argument about political interference via the justice system. Sadly, she has it upside down and trump is projecting, as usual. If he were in power he _would_ (and has evidently tried to) leverage the judiciary for political gain. But she is not abel to see this. I guess they are so aware of human failings, she expects that everyone has the same low standards.

They deeply mistrust information that comes out of these institutions, and rather than listen to the lies they perceive, many would often rather not listen at all. That's actually a great point, I've never thought about how people see it like a sports team thing. I think having team colors and groups can make people more rigid and less likely to research people (outside of whether they're democrat or republican) and vote for people outside of their team. When I had to vote for governor, I read each and every candidate's statements. I highlighted parts, kept notes, and didn't pay too much attention to what "side" they were on.

I’m in SC, and I guess you’d call the people against Trump, a “silent group”. We just vote and don’t say anything. It’s disturbing to see how so many in this state are so uninformed…. Wonder how a Biden rally would compare here?

The difference is that most Democrats just go about their business quietly without the need for attention. We are just like Joe Biden. On the other hand, trump and his followers thrive on attention and the spotlight. Personally, I like steadfast and quiet. In my experience, the bullies are always the loudest.

Biden was observing COVID protocol. Trump was defying the recommendations of the CDC. Biden's "small crowds" were planned that way. Many caught COVID at Trump's indoor rallies, and a few died, but as it turned out the outdoor rallies were not as likely to transmit the virus.

      True that!
I assume you're referring to when Trump undermined people's trust in the election, without any evidence whatsoever, just because he didn't like the outcome?
Regardless of his politics that was just a despicable, anti-american move.
Or maybe a perfectly american move I guess.. depending on how highly you regard the average american.
I mean he went on for so long about the false accusations regarding the russian collusion, and then he does the same to the entirety of the US election system? You have to be a special kind of person to do that.
