  • In rural Minnesota, a fringe Heathen group known as the Asatru Folk Assembly has purchased a local church - and membership is strictly whites-only.

They worship Nordic, pre-Christian gods and they call themselves a 'folk religion' that only accepts those with northern European ancestry. Their racially exclusive ideology is protected by the first amendment.
Amudalat Ajasa visits the church to understand how it is gaining influence across the country and to meet the anti-racist Heathens fighting back to reclaim their religion.

The most ridiculous thing about the AFA is that no ancient Germanic societies based inclusion or exclusion on notions of race or ethnicity, and in the case of legitimate, genuinely exclusive secret societies and ecstatic warrior cults, admission was based solely on three things: battle prowess, wisdom/virtue, and a propensity for intoxicating ecstatic experiences that was genetically inherited by so-called berserkers. Within the genuine elite and secret societies of the ancient Germanic world, admission was based purely on personal merit, while in the surrounding parent society, slaves and freemen alike were often of non-Germanic stock due to population migrations, wars, and trade routes. So although admission into these secret Odinic cults probably had some genetic basis to it, these people probably made up less than one percent of the broader Germanic speaking world, and even then, we're talking about specific genetic predispositions toward certain mentalities, religious experiences, and things like physical fitness, rather than "race." But you still had to do something with what you were born with and prove yourself to be allowed in -- you couldn't just say "yeah my dad is so and so, so let me in." You certainly couldn't be let in just for looking a certain way while doing nothing of worth and being a lazy, arrogant fool.
Meanwhile, almost all of the people in this video have at least some Celtic ancestry from Ireland, Scotland, and England -- maybe even the majority of their ancestry is this rather than Germanic, in fact. They'll come from areas originally very heavily inhabited by the Scotch-Irish, or the WASPs, and then focus solely on that eight percent of their DNA from Norway as a means of justifying their obnoxious LARPing. What's even worse is that, even if they were by some miracle to have nothing but ancestors of Germanic ancestry, with no Celtic or Italic or Slavic influence, etc., they'll still focus on that eight percent from Norway rather than take a broader look at their Germanic ancestry as a whole, not understanding that there are probably no particularly important genetic markers that distinguish their Norwegian ancestors from their German or Anglo-Saxon or Dutch ancestors; they will likely then talk about worshipping "Odin" and traditional Norse clothes and learning phrases in Old Norse, meanwhile totally oblivious to the existence of Wotan or Woden, traditional Anglo-Saxon or Frisian or Frankish clothes, with no interest in learning phrases in Old Frankish, Old Low German, or Old English.

Complete nonsense. These cultures were so estranged from other races that to call someone "black" meant they had dark hair, and even this was conspicuously rare - of course they had no scribbled rule saying whites only! Why do you people have to make up false histories and "logical" deconstructions to erase their legitimacy?
The nordic larping is all very silly, but it's pretty obvious from the language of this video that the controversy is over their "whiteness" - the audacity to want to be around their own people and culture.

Race, no. Race as a concept we have it today didn't even exist. Ethnicity? There the line gets blurrier. Ethnicity as we think of it also didn't exist. I doubt many Germani thought of themselves as such, for example. Instead they were something more akin to tribal peoples, with most coming from extremely small kinship groups into a generic whole united by cultural and genetic similarities. That approaches something like what we think of as ethnicity.

Most people of the modern definition of “white” meet the genetic criteria for AFA admission because the Germanic tribes were all over Europe and most white people have an overwhelming amount of Germanic blood. The British Isles is full of Germanic blood from the Viking invasions of Scotland to the Anglo Saxons and the Normans. Even the non-Germanic “white” ethnicities such as Celts, Romans, Slavs etc. are genetically and culturally not that distant from the Germanic tribes. The difference was mostly in the language and the names of their gods. It’s like the Chinese mixing with the Japanese. Therefore it would make sense for a white American who isn’t necessarily Scandinavian to be accepted over someone who is half Swedish half Nigerian.

I'm white and I know how much white people love to hyper-focus on one of their ancestral lines while ignoring the others - and not necessarily on purpose. White Americans just tend to not know their full ancestry- if they're born to a father with the surname Anderson they'll think they're 100% Scandinavian even though their mother's family came from Italy. 6:12 - “Jason Gallagher AFA folk builder”
12:22 - “A curse on the AFA and their teple” (sic)
The runes are from the Elder Futhark alphabet, which was originally used to write Proto-Norse and Old Norse. Nowadays, people often use it to spell out their own language (e.g. English) letter by letter, but the runes were originally sounded out phonetically in a fairly predictable way (as with Spanish or Finnish).
For example, if a literate Viking were to see the word ᚲᚢᚱᛊᛖ (kurse), they would likely pronounce it as something like “KOOR-say” with a rolled “r”, and ᛃᚨᛊᛟᚾ (Jason) would be “YAH-sohn”.
I don’t think it’s wrong for people to use the runes letter by letter, just thought I’d throw in a bit of background info.

Growing up, I was raised with very strong anti-racist parents. My dad chose to settle in and raise his family in my home town, in part because it was one of the most integrated city in the US in 1968. When I was a little kid, I didn't understand the racially segregated neighborhoods I saw on TV or heard about in school. To me it was something that was in the past, not something that was around now (in the 70's and 80's) I had black neighbors and black friends.
I was invited by one of my black friends to attend his church. He was Baptist and even though I was the only white person there I saw nothing but welcoming warmth from everyone.
It was shocking because I came from a very reverent Mormon church where things were subdued and calm. Frankly, I loved his church because it was fun. Even now, I still love black gospel music even though I'm atheist now.
I just can't imagine living life without a racially diverse friend group. I also believe that this country will never be free until we realize King's Dream. When a man is judged by the character of his heart and not the color of his skin. When children can play together without considering the color of their skin.
People who talk about racial purity are forgetting, there is just one race. Humans.

Unfortunately I feel like preserving heritage/culture will always have racist/exclusionary undertones. The people of the world were separated by industrialization so “heritage/culture” was always practiced by one group. Unless you want to redefine celebrating heritage/culture as not being a specific race/nationality things (ie someone can be chinese but is ethnically white).
I think this is an interesting topic because I know as a native Filipino (and who’s generally surrounded by other immigrants) living in the states there’s tension between first gen and second gen. It’s not bad but first gens always talk about how “white-washed” second gens are. Then there’s just dismissive comments made by first gens if a second gen doesn’t know how to speak the language. I think this is an acceptance issue, so once we’re comfortable of including other heritages to help practice a certain culture it’ll always be hard.
I’m not a sociologist btw, but these are what I noticed and my 2 cents.

The Guardian's use of the word "Church" is click bait that attempts deceive the weak-minded with smears about Christian Churches and the USA as being racist. Shame on you Guardian. Even THEY call themselves "Asatru Folk ASSEMBLY." Even THEY don't describe themselves as a "Church." Which they aren't. Which makes the Guardian LIARS! Second: Also, it isn't a "Whites-only" Assembly...another label from the pre-civil-rights era that the dishonest Guardian is trying to LIE about. I'm white of Greek ancestry...I'm not welcome. Why? Because I'm not descended from Nordic People. So it's not "White only" it is Nordic Descendants Only. LIARS. Finally: Freedom of Assembly in the USA means you can assemble with whoever you want. Norse Gods, Norse descendent worshipers only. So? That's their right. So, the Guardian are LIARS and these Americans are exercising their right of free assembly. Now, if you want to see segregationist racism in action in the USA Today? You need to look to Ivy League campuses where African American students exclude whites from their dormitories, clubs, and associations. One even had a "white free day" where white students were forced off campus. Yep. Look it up. Black supremacy is the only institutionalized racism left in the USA. There's your story, Guardian.
