- Lentils and garbanzo beans are put to the test.
Which legumes benefit from the highest levels of antioxidants? If you compared the total antioxidant content of ten different legumes, which do you think would come out on top? Pinto beans, lima beans, red kidney beans, black kidney beans-for which I think they just mean black beans-navy beans, small red beans, black-eyed peas, mung beans, lentils, versus chickpeas. Who can guess the winner and the loser?

It's nice to have foods that are so cheap and commonplace, yet so effective.
Exactly, yet the masses (especially in the West) look down upon them as peasant food. Their loss.
Yes - the common cry 'Food is _so expensive_ !' I am a South African on a Government Pension of R1890 per month. I eat _splendidly_ !
Love it
the greatest part about lentils being number one is that there's so much quicker to make
Those are my special beans. They are nutritious and with the chick peas you can make a lot of recipes.
True, so much faster. But I must say the best part is their earthy, deep, savory flavor. So so good
You can bake with cooked lentils. Just make sure their weight does not exceed the weight of flour. Let the lentils replace some of the liquid components in the recipe. You won't know they're there, but it will be tasty and filling.
You can't make lentils, you have to grow them.
i had black lentils literally 10 minutes before watching this video, and now i feel like flying around and saving the innocent
Harry P 😂😂
😂😂😂
I cant find them anymore, my fav color
"Flying around and saving the innocent" I didn't grasp the meaning, could you explain it to me please?
I found them but paid a pretty penny...like 1000 of them
I stumbled upon the fact of slow stomach emptying (4:12) when I chose beans (edamame) for breakfast. My hunger for lunch was later and afternoon snack was skipped. My lunch box came home with food still in it! Skip the expensive antioxidant supplements and eat WFPB and go (IMO) organic. Thank you for this video Dr Greger!
I really love chickpeas and lentils. I never ate them in the past, but since I found them I can't get enough. They are so satisfactory, it's insane.
And I just happen to eat those the most. My life is lentil veggie soup and chickpea everything.
I guessed lentils! Do I win a prize? My weight in lentils ? I bloody love them. I have brown, black, red and green in my cupboard. They are my favorites.
I make a lentil, brown rice & kale stew that is the most satisfying batch cook meal in my rotation ❤️👍
It’s two weeks I’ve been having homemade hummus for breakfast and lentils for lunch and I’ve been feeling amazing. Then this video popped out on my feed, so now I know why.
I guess you could say... bean-efits?
Just the right channel for that type of jokes
Its 9.41 here and i had my first chickpea curry(started vegan diet 2 days ago) at 6.I`m usually back in the kitchen at 8.30 raiding away for all the usual chocolates, biscuits etc but i still feel completely full..like i don`t want anything before i go to bed which is completely unheard of for me.Really excited about this journey..definately less excited about all the pots and pans ive been washing but hey, nothing worthwhile comes easy in life.
I also recently (jan. 1st) started my vegan journey. I usually raid my kitchen as well for the same kinds of snack you mentioned. I'm inspired by videos like this and also excited about my decision to go vegan. I know it's well worth it based on countless evidence and the results I'm already getting. More strength to you on your journey. Much love and respect.
@@iqueenspositivevibrations3931 that's amazing! Before going WFBP vegan I also used to be addicted to sugar and snacks, but now I absolutely LOVE the healthy food that I eat and I don't crave junk anymore. :-) Good luck on your journey 🍏🥬
@@NeneChan203 thank you. Love and light
I'm Indian and eat lentils for dinner every day. Very happy to see that they are #1 xD
I have lived all over the world and the country that had the very best tasting beans/lentils was India! PCRM recently launched an Indian website with oil free recipes.
Thanks for those nuggets of valuable info, I’m glad you mentioned Chick Peas( Chana) as they are so delicious as well as v nutritious, and being 1 of the main ingredients in Humous, along with Sesame Seeds, Garlic, Lemon Juice etc, makes Humous VERY nutritious!. I’ve yet to come across any Vegan yters ( Doctors, health/fitness etc folk) who have mentioned Sprouting Legumes, Seeds etc. Humous for example can be made with Chickpeas AFTER they’ve been sprouted making them much more nutrient dense!. Sprouted Peas, Beans, Seeds & Wheatgrass, Alfalfa etc are like natural Multi Vit tablets, packed full of a variety of Nutrients! Why does no one mention them, or better still, list off their Vit content a bit like in above Vid!.
Green lentils, kale, 2 chopped garlic, tablespoon olive oil, pinch of salt boil for 30. Blend once done with hand blender. Serve with half a lime or lemon with more olive oil ontop. Trust me you'll love it.
Yum, Yum, Yum!!!!!Thanks for the suggestion!!!!
Not just VERY informative, but also delivered so well, with humour and conciseness. Thank you very much for all your videos!!
Wait...did anyone else hear him say he puts lentils in his oatmeal?
I've just started making lentil and oat flour pancakes 😊
Blend 1cup to 1.1/2 cps of lentils that have been soaked and drained, with about 4tbspoons of wholegrain oat flour (that I ground in nutribullet) half a banana with 2 eggs and liquid drained from the lentils, just enough to make a thick batter, cook slowly till brown on both sides . I had butter and Date syrup on top with a squeeze of lemon and sometimes a dollop of unsweetened greek yogurt 😋 there very yummy and even my husband said they tasted good and he's skeptical about trying things like that. Also add black eyed beans or lentils to mince meals it makes it go further and is healthier for you 😊
Yep…you heard it correctly. He said he puts lentils in with oats in his Instant Pot (pressure cooker) @- 1:48

I love these videos of the health benefits of common foods. This was very common at the beginning of the channel. I love watch these.
I make a pot of mixed beans every week or so, so I have them available to eat every day. I use a mixture of pinto beans, red beans, and black beans for the bulk of the mixture, and then I add a smaller amount of soybeans, green and red lentils, adzuki beans, and sometimes mung beans to increase the variety of nutrients and other phyto-chemicals. In order to keep from getting bored with the same thing, I change which bean will dominate the pot and the spices used....and, I'll also change things by making a pot of just lentils some weeks that I can thin down into a soup or use in other recipes. And, of course, I'll occasionally make a batch of just chickpeas that I eat as is or add to salads or other recipes, that I use to make hummus, and I drain off and reserve the chickpea broth to make various types of quick and easy soups using a spoonful of miso in place of salt.
Calvin Burr,
Sounds tasty. Do you have the recipes (and/or videos) you use for this, measurements, what spices, etc?
@Maxim C.
I don't use a recipe for cooking the beans...but, I cook them in a stainless steel insert that I put in a deep pressure cooker. When done, I remove the insert, and put its top on it. When cool, it goes in the fridge. My pressure cooker doesn't get dirty and only needs to be dried, but every once in a while I'll need to clean the mineral deposits at the bottom of the pressure cooker with white vinegar. A typical batch will be one cup of pintos, a half cup of red beans, a third cup of black beans, and then I'll add about a quarter cup each of soybeans, lentils, and maybe one or two other types of beans. I sort, wash, and soak them in a mild brine for about 16 to 24 hours. I drain, rinse, and put in my insert with enough water to cover....then I add some chopped onion, carrot, celery, parsley, garlic, cilantro. Spices might be curry powder, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne, thyme, oregano, basil, bay....or I might go more for a cumin flavor in place of the last four...I often use epazote as another way to flavor beans, which is mostly a Mexican thing to use with some types of beans. With chickpeas, I don't use anything...I prefer to have them clean and unflavored so they can be used in a number of ways. Usually, 45 minutes in the pressure cooker before I turn off the heat is good enough, and they I let them sit until the pressure is down. One thing I do with my beans all the time is to place some in a bowl, then I mash them up into a paste with a fork, mix in a little of my favorite salsa (such as Pace Picante Sauce), and then I use that as a dip for unsalted tortilla chips, pieces of a tortilla, pita bread, or to butter a tortilla before filling it with other things like avocado, pico de gallo, etc. This bean paste I make is very similar to refried beans in the way it is used....I call it "Mexican Butter" because Mexicans use refried beans to spread on many foods, including sandwiches. Other times, I just eat the beans unmashed.
Calvin Burr - “Mexican Butter”. What a great idea!
Calvin Burr,
Thank you! Very useful.
Calvin Burr Brilliant!! Great imagination!! Great ideas, thanks!!
I learn so much from your videos!
👌👏👏👏
Ok, time to stock up on lentils! Thank you Dr Greger!
Yeah... and chick peas too (for intestinal health)!
DreamingTata VeganMama j
@marian roberto You looked old at 20
Yes! lentils!! I put them everywhere as a source of protein!!!
Bet you shit 10 times a day
me too! and no it doens't make you shit 10 times a day lol
How do you cook them? I always tend to over cook them into much.. or is that how I should cook them haha
ReachForTheStarch depends on the lentil. Red lentils will always be mushy, nothing you can do about that. Your best bet for cooking them is probably making a stew or soup out of them or incorporating them into a recipe. If you aren't doing it that way, id suggest just buying canned lentils bc I can never cook them right either.
@@Mommy2kal i have some nice recipy for you

Lentils are a powerhouse. And they are mood enhancers too!
Our staple diet for the past 40 years, Chickpeas , lentils , Broad beans , fava beans . in this order with rice or oat bread and a ton of veg, Cale, cabbage, collard greens , courgette, aubergine , okra, spinach , peppers , onions, celery , leek, and other veg and herbs / spices. Fruits and nuts. unfortunately we also consumed a lot of meat until 3 years ago. but going on the right direction .
supernova1976 meat was your healthiest think in that whole comment the rest are deadly
chris white rice, carrots or potatoes with steak and eggs or salmon is perfect
i really like fava beans but i have favism, and they don't like me. Leeks are supposedly really good for the gut according to the French.
supernova1976 where are the fruits
@@umpvp2435 forgot to mention a ton of other things 😊, sure alot of seasonal fruits, and nuts .
One my staple "meals" consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of lentils and a dollup of freshly ground peanut butter OR an avocado. Yum!
Your staple wise idea! As food gets more expensive i take some extra each month... Great idea for everyone.
Lentils are my favorite legume😄
how do you cook them?
@@Gary-jh3wd Red Lentils - They are very fast to cook and (for me) they are the most tasty!
Just sauté some red onions and garlic in some low-sodium Vegetable broth for around 5 mins (add more as needed), then add tomato puree, thyme, oregano, basil, paprika, iodized salt (not needed), black pepper and little bit of cayenne pepper (not to much).
Then cook for further 2 minutes and add the Red Lentils and 3 cms water above the lentils (like 1/3 of a finger).
Let it cook on low-medium heat for 7 mins.
Turn on the heat to medium-maximum and add tomato paste and stir for 2 minutes and it should be done. These Lentils are amazing to get aside with some sauté vegetables (carrots, peppers, mushrooms, celery, eggplants), quinoa and broccoli (I'm having that for dinner haha).
You can also make dahls, curries and even bologneses with this type of lentils (although i prefer the brown ones for bolognese).
www.forksoverknives.com/recipes/vegan-soups-stews/red-lentil-dal-recipe/ --- dahl
ruclips.net/video/QMsZjq6aZys/видео.html ----- curry
Green and brown lentils - This type of lentils take more time to cook and don't get like the red ones, they only absorb the water and cook like rice or quinoa, it doesn't turn into a mushy paste.
This can be cook by soaking them for 12-24 hours and then cook them like you cook beans, like black beans, just put it on a pressure cooker or in a normal pot and cook them for 25-15 minutes with 2 parts water to 1 part lentil.
Then use it as a side pulse, like you use black beans, pinto beans and chickpeas or you can add them into a bolognese sauce and have a lentil bolognese dish with pasta and broccoli!
I recommend you this video too if you are intersted on lentils and on how to cook them - ruclips.net/video/HEnR_dszD90/видео.html
Happy cooking and a healthy life for you buddy1
I'm enjoying the new twist on your videos. I am so grateful for you and your team. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, I wish the study had included split peas though. They are the legume I by far eat the most of.
Great info
So my totally weird breakfast of Lentils + tofu is better than I thought.
I do eat that very often💪
how do you make it?
Oh i used to eat buckets of that exact meal. With cilantro and peanuts on top!
I have both almost every day, yumlicious :)
All this science to 'prove' what we knew before we had science. Still, it's comforting :)
Recipe way more interesting than soup:
Soak lentils or chickpeas for a few hours, blend and season it to taste pouring new water until it becomes liquid-ish. Put it in your best frying pan in low heat, flip and there you have it: a giant veggie burguer/pancake thingy.
André Alves,
We want video evidence! 😄
Sorry to be that guy put pan-frying it is likely to destroy some benefits - not all but its not as good certainly
Then again if it makes the difference between eating a lot everyday and not eating it at all it might be the right thing to do
i do something very similar - soak lentils - all kinds, sometimes a mixture of types - add your favorite seasonings - change it up. Add chia seeds. Pour on baking pan and you get cookie-like, transportable food in endless flavors. I've used compliant bbq, taco, even cacao with strawberries. One cup lentils, two cups water and soak. Blend with seasonings to taste. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Possibilities are literally endless.
BrendaWNY nothanks when you say blend do you mean blend the lentils and water in a blender? Sounds interesting.
yes, they blend easily after soaking and a blank slate - choose your favorite spices/flavors. Chia seeds thicken or leave out and bake like a tortilla or sandwich wrap. Super easy, quick, versatile and they travel well.
Lentils vs. Chickpeas :Only difference is I haven’t had a Lentil on my face
I've been eating a cup of chickpeas a day for 2 weeks now, game changer! My digestion is becoming regular for the first time in years & I just plain feel better! Looks like lentils will be next to incorporate in my diet👍
@nidhi Vv , 128 grams I have always been constipated, eating 1 cup of beans has made it possible for me to have a bowel movement daily. That's amazing to me as I have not been like that even as a kid.
@nidhi Vv , which in turn made me feel better. That's it, thank you for your question.
God bless you
I always love watching your videos! Not only are they very informative, but funny and fun as well! Thank you so much for all you do!
Incredible what I'm learning from your videos, thank you Dr Greger.
Black beans + tofu is my fav combo. Never thought of putting beans in my oatmeal and not sure I will give that a go. My oatmeal is already way too crowded.
Never heard of that either lol.
Thank you for all the information you share with us!! Thank you Dr. Greger!!
I've noticed that my body gets excited right before eating chickpeas, they are everyday food in my house (it's a microbiome kind of thing). Lentils are wonderful too and I will be making a batch in the InstantPot tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion.
❤
I once made a soup with lentils, black beans, and chickpeas in it. It was great, and I felt tip top, but the EPA sent me a form letter detailing the clean air act.
I do a long soak in my beans changing the water every 6 hours. I soak them 2 days. If weather is hotter than 80degrees I soak in fridge. My beans are nearly gas free.
I love them all, but chickpeas the most.
Thank you. For this video. Any chance you can show us how you cook your legumes?
Thanks ☺
I literally crave lentil soup 12 months of the year. There's always a box of Whole Food's organic lentil soup on my shelf at work in case I can't get around to making it myself. Chickpeas in a tomato and cucumber salad are my second go-tos, although I really love to roast my chickpeas in the oven with some paprika and chili powder so they are spicy and crispy. Delicious.
*LOVING IT!!!!* It's great when something one already suspects as being awesome, is confirmed.
Muchas gracias por subtitular los vídeos! Hay información importante para mí.
You Rock! and so does Beans and Lentils! Thank you Dr Greger, your videos are always welcomed. Thanks for the work that you do.
How about the estrogen content? People on low estrogen diet avoid garbanzo. Do you have any info on this Dr. Gregger?
Good news for me then... Chickpeas are my staple food.
You are such a great doctor, Dr Greger. Xx
Didn't know black lentils existed. I was told not to get stuck on one food so I alternate black beans, chickpeas and red lentils depending on recipe and yes I LOVE my instant pot. Also for anyone out there who has one, the pressure cooker setting is great for beans but the slow cooker setting for veggie stews is excellent. Tx again, Dr. Greger.
Legumes can be used in your diet every day they do so much good. Im starting to put on weight in under two weeks with exercise too that is.
Outstanding material, great service to humanity and the earth!!
I added lentils for dinner to increase my protein intake. And I noticed that I no longer have the urge to eat again later at night which is a great side benefits I think especially for people who want to do time restricted feeding.
Yes! I've been eating lentils everyday for the last year or so.
I've just made and eaten a spicy dhal curry with chickpeas and coconut milk. Soooo good!
Awesome video, clear, responsible, easy to follow, interesting, useful, not too long, not too short, prize material...thankyou :)
That was interesting. I just made red lentil flat bread, tasty and filling. Eating healthy on a budget..
I cook either black beans or pinto beans until they start to soften then I add a bag of lentils into the pot with curry, onion power, garlic powder some tomatoes etc it's healthy, cheap and delicious.
If you look at Indian lentils, there are more than 10 commonly available varieties, including black lentils, which are called urad dal.
Reverend Al +
Urad dal has a very different texture than red split lentils. Imo it's more "slimy"
Love them all! Chana dal is my favourite
I sprout a mixture of(chick)peas, beans and lentils with mustard, broccoli and celery seeds.
Why do this? Promote enzymes?
Michael Balfour easier digestibility, more nutrients.
Really? Thanks for the info, do you have evidence to back that up though? Also does it affect taste or texture?
Michael Balfour just search for the sprouting benefita, it really has no conflict of interest lol.
Anyways heres a link : www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/1342162/
In the study it says there was a reduction of oglisachirides(something like this) which is what's so hard to digest in beans and legumes.
Also forgot to mention phytic acid content decreases (anti-mineral or mineral-inhibitor, however you may think of it)
Thanks, I'm going to study some stuff on this, if what you say is true I may have to start doing this sometimes.
Brief but potent videos. Thank you for the great info.
Hi, I would like to know if Horchata, a drink made from tigernut is healthy or not, I would really like a video explaining it, thanks!
I was just about to make some chickpea and lentil tikka masala good timing!
Are lentil and chickpeas safe for g6pd deficiency patients?
trying to find the references source links in your description, but i didn't find any. hoping you can list the paper links/journals in the future, thanks
Wow!!!! This is awesome!!! I am doing healthy keto and eliminated beans and lentils for a short time, but did not feel well and developed a white coating on my tongue. I added them back in and feel so much better!!!!
Does anyone know if pasta alternatives, like those based on lentil, chickpea flour etc, count towards your 3 servings of beans per day? I'm thinking specifically in the context of the Daily Dozen. The whole bean is best but do the bean flours count?
Cool! I Love chickpeas right out of the can sometimes! 👍🌱🌱🌱
TWO OF MY FAVORITE LEGUMES!!!
Just finished eating pinto bean lentil tomato soup (with plenty of handfuls of spinach) before watching this
Dan Brown Spinach becomes toxic when cooked.
How so? I thought Dr Greger had a video on how it becomes more nutritious when cooked and is better that way
Everything is toxic to those raw foodists lol
Yeahhh I mean I know a Google search isn't everything but from a quick Google search all I can see is that reheating it is not always the best idea... Cooking it is healthy. 'Toxic' is a pretty non-specific buzz-word unless you want to clarify Andy M
Dan Brown I'm trying to find the source my friend. Anyway not to mention the amount of nitric oxide you lose when cooking.
I respect you from the bottom of my heart
I've eaten a pan of boiled lentils 3-4 times a week for the past 5 years. I love them! I've probably only had less than 5 stomach aches in that time period because I presume that my gut biome is so excellent from eating lentils.
I love lentil curry
and that can be made into a spread too, like the man who talks about Mexican butter. Any bean with some seasonings is great.
Culture vulture
I aboslutely love lentil soup. I had it about a year ago at a Mediterranean restaurant since then ive been obsessed with it and make it several times a month. This video inspired me to make some and its cooking now. :) yall should try it if you havent already.
I ate a can of chickpeas today with some coconut curry sauce and rice, and it kept me full all day! Definitely going to eat more lentils now, too!
Yay for beans! I've been trying to buy more variety but glad I know my two favorites are some of the best! Chickpeas and pintos are on the menu this week :)
I use brown, black and red lentils for growing sprouts and cooking dal.
Do you have any research of which grains is the best for us? Is millet in the top tier grain?
Wow, can't believe margarine was actually listed in the breakfast list!? One of the worst "foods" ever. Apparently bugs won't even go near it if it's left out because they recognize it's not real food.
Chickpea and Lentil hummus ftw 🙌
Soak red lentils for 3 hours, blend with spices of your choice then pour on a baking sheet. In 30 minutes you have a completely healthy flatbread.
🙏🏼 thank you
Does anybody know whether it mtters nutrition wise if i eat green or red lentils?
so i should pretty much just continue eating my red lentil/bulgur patties with a side of hummus.
Lentils for the Win!!!! ❤️ Lentils!
Quite amazing and nice info - lentils are supereasy to make and they taste great - happy and healthy eating
I don't know if you'll respond to this but I have to ask. I'm reading Mucusless Diet Healing System by Arnold Ehret. I'm wondering what your thoughts were on mucus being the catalyst of all disease? Based on the theory that mucus clogs different internal bodily functions and causes the body to store up waste.
Do I have to add any fats to lentils and beans to increase the absorption of the antioxidant in the body?
I had yellow split peas (dhal) at the Indian restaurant this evening amazingly good and tasty
This is amazing for my adhd thank you 🙏🏼
I like lentil soup with veggies like carrots onion garlic tomato potato pumpkin etc
YET ANOTHER AMAZING INFORMATIVE VIDEO !!!! ✊😃👍
In my pressure cooker I currently have a soup with lentils, split pea and pulverized black bean. Of course I would be here all day adding the details of what is in that soup. Friday, popcorn day, yum.
Loved this. The Indian restaurant down the road will soon have a new best customer. Stay healthy ♡
What are the benefits of legumes ?
We didn’t know....LENTIL...now!
Where can I buy oat groats? I can't find them at my local Sprouts supermarket
By the way can I check with you, do we need to buy Organic Dry beans and not the usual beans for fear of GMO product?
and what happen with the uric acid, I have it higher than the limits in 7.3mg/dl? Can I continue eating lentils?
Good stuff! Would like to hear how you prepare your oatmeal.
Great info. Thanks for posting.
Are all lentils created equally? Do yellow and green lentils rate the same as the red shown? Thank you!
Glad to hear this because I am eating chick peas almost every day at present with a salad. I also eat a lot of lentils because easy to cook.
Excellent!!! I love to cook curry with lentil spinach and sweet potato!!
Thanks for the great info.
