Ohhh, I havent found *1* video in RUclips cracking down a lesson of sweep picking 100% so Im watching a lot of videos for my puzzle... this is one of the most helpful vids I watched, TY
After scouring "the Tube" for days, this is the absolute best explanation on muting while sweeping I've heard/seen . Big thanks man. Now....back to making noise as my cat stares rather impatiently while I practice this...
Great video. I'm onto practice and here's my main difficulty : I'm doing that exact shape (14 on the G, 15 on the B, 13 on the E string) and I'm using my index finger for the 14 and the 13. So I have to fret the 14, lift it without pulling off, then move it to 13, without ever creating a pulloff noise. That's quite tricky IMO.
I am having this same issue with the G string! I found this channel because of it. It seems no matter how lightly I let off the G string still buzzes. Its almost like the string gets stuck to my fingertip since it is not a wound string and it is just thick enough. Even if I very carefully just barely touch the string and then let off very softly it will still buzz. It would take a team of engineers to let off any softer! I think it must be a palm muting issue since its so tricky to shift the palm mute with precision.
@@15gauge59 The player in this video uses very low distortion which reduces noise a lot and makes it way easier. It is okay for explaining but not for rocking a killer solo. This video will change your life ruclips.net/video/UptJaw7cpmA/видео.html Notice how he rest his pinky, ring and middle finger on the higher strings to mute the strings. It is subtle but he is totally using the soft part of his fingers to mute the strings. You don't even need to use the middle finger but the video will give you a clear idea of how to approach it. One last thing, he is not only resting, you need to push the strings slightly to make the muting happen faster.
@@re1 I guess if you can already sweep pick competently then MAB's videos are instructional but for people who are just starting to sweep, his videos are too advanced.
A fret wrap comes in handy when you are going to record in the studio for an album, EP or Single. I personally don't have anything against them for those purposes. But for on the fly I would recommend really honing in your technique to get it as clean as you can.
This popped up on my recommended videos. I watched and would like to add that the right hand is far more imprtant than the left for muting. Palm and thumb muting is far better.
It depends but you hover your palm over the strings that have just been played so that they don’t ring afterwards by accident. I do this when sweeping downwards.
Can someone help me? I'm practicing a two string arpeggio (D and G strings) with alternate picking and I need to mute the B and E strings. It's quite a stretch so my left hand is very busy. I've tried placing my right hand pinky above the B string but it's so awkward and uncomfortable to me. What can I do?
Alfred Potter also advocates using part of thumb pad (the chicken drumstick) to mute the bass strings. You can also see a myriad of players using their thumb pad in muting based on how they hold their pick. However, this method has one Achille's heel: thumb scraping. If you play any arpeggios where the notes are aggressively palm muted, you will encounter this problem. You can hear this problem if you don't even pick up the pick, but scrape your thumb pad along the wound strings of your guitar through a high gain/distorted amp. You need to train yourself to avoid letting all of your thumb rest on the wound strings otherwise it will cause more unwanted scraping sounds to come through your amplifier in a metal context. You can sometimes clean up on this problem by rolling off the volume knob and letting the amplifier latch onto the muted notes and less of the thumb scraping, but your mileage may vary depending on your amp/amp sim. However, for cleaner playing and hybrid picking I find it to be an excellent technique for muting in general. I can't seem to live without the technique because if I rely only on my hypothenar (the karate chop) to mute the strings then my picking hand becomes cocked to a very uncomfortably angle and my fingers always bump the volume knob on my strat-like guitar. However, if you can build a foundation of techniques that rely mostly on your hypothenar, then you might be able to avoid the troubles of thumb scrape entirely... my 2 cents.
I feel like nobody ever explained this as clearly like that. For the first time it really feels clean and controlled.
That's great news my friend! I am always wondering if these silly videos help at all. Glad to know they do!
this comment!!!^
i hope u learnt sweep picking after this
@@bean6366 gotta say I improved a lot, but I still haven't gotten to that "yep, doing fast sweep run with little effort"

My dude you are super chill also super great lesson!
Ive watched dozens of sweep picking videos and yours is the only one that tackles the problem Im havng with muting the strings.
Thank you. Releasing tension and resting the finger to prevent a pull off note is a major problem solver!
Doesn't sound too bad when your messing around unplugged. Boy once you plug that baby in it's static city
Slap a Noise Gate on it!
How do I fix annoying brushing noises when my hands touch the strings?
Watched a bunch of other videos... I kept wondering how to get the notes not to ring out. Thanks for clearly explaining!
Great advice for any guitarist looking for cleaner solos. Much appreciated!

Wow, thanks!
Its still the only video I could find that actually addressed my issue of making unintentional pull off while trying to sweep.
Finally I got info how to mute strings in sweeping, great staff!
For real I think this video is still the only one that addresses it properly.
That g string ringing has been the death of me for over a year. Gonna give this a try, brb
I just started to learn sweeping and this is ringing true. I’m glad I found this video.
Exact same reason Im here that damn g string. Glad to see its not just me.

best explanation, thx a lot
Best tuitorial ever no one ever told me that
I'm happy the video helped you out!
Great Lesson, thanks! Muting upstrokes is the worst :/
Yeh Pls tell me how to if you figured that out dude

I could! Maybe I should. Should I? I shall add it to my list!

Very very helpful! Thx 🙏
No problem!
Thanks a ton! The string buzzing was getting on my nerves.
Glad it helped!
Very helpful, thanks :-)
sick guitar bro. love it
everyone just tells me to get a fret wrap but none of the guitarists i listen to use them.

Palm and thumb muting is far better.
When Mark knopfler wants to play headless guitars. This is that version of guitar.
nice solo at the start of the video, i love clean tone sweeping but its alot harder to make it sound good.
when muting with right hand, do you use the meat of the thumb to mute? or do you use the other side of the right hand, the side of the palm?
Sound so jazzy
Should I be palm muting when sweep picking?

@@LuminousDark can you make a video about it. It really confuses me, i wanna remove unwanted string noise.

great video but damn I really suck at muting
only i can do now is sub and smash like :D greate lesson
Is sweep picking for acoustic because I mean Iike I'm doing everything on this videp
Do you also mute when going towards the lower strings?
Idk but who's with me? When switching to clean tone its much easier to sweep than a distorted sweep..
I agree but I like a lil gain for the pull offs and hammer ons
Excellent building block approach! Question? What are your thoughts of developing Tom Hess's picking hand thumb muting approach to sweeps?

isn't that a classical piece that you played at the intro and at the end? i can't remember what its called ugh
It's an original piece
do you think im superhuman or something i cant reach 12 after 17
ya know i thought abt trying again but nah dis shi too hard 💀
I’m so pissed off I can sweep pretty well but I can’t figure out the damn palm muting😡😤
severely under viewed
No up to speed
is it a joke?, doing this without distortion is ridiculous...
