Great lesson. I've heard some teachers say you should only practice scales on an acoustic or clean amp. I used to believe that until I started practicing on an amp with high gain. I found that the thumb of my picking hand was ever so slightly gliding across the string above the string I was picking. Even though I was muting the string it was still making unwanted noise. I would have never heard that noise without the gain.

Hi Steve. Yes, I think we all grab the concept, but putting it into practice is hard. I was told once not to worry about it because it will 'come' when playing, but I think a lot of us need to get this sorted and need help. Any ideas for practising would be a big deal for a lot of us! Cheers. Chris

Steve you're the first guy on YT that has addressed this issue, that I've come across. I found this to be an issue a couple of years ago when I started doing instrumentals. I worked thru all this stuff over time to come to the same practice effects.
I have 3 questions here, which are a bit unclear to me: 1. Do you use specifically the INDEX finger of your left hand to mute the strings, or do you use other left hand fingers as well? 2. Do you use the tip of the left hand index finger to only mute specifically the 2nd string, or just whatever string is above the string that you're playing? 3. Do you use other left hand fingers' tips to mute the string above the one that you're playing? Or only specifically the index finger? Thanks a lot Steve!
Very good explanations. Thanks a lot. I was wondering why the songs I played were a bit "messy". Now I understand what I must manage to do to keep control on guitar. It will be maybe a difficult work to do but it's good to know how the pros are doing it !
Thanks for watching Steve's video, and thanks for the kind words! The answer is, the more you play, the more you will develop muscle memory in your hands and fingers. And the more muscle memory you have in your hand and fingers, the more control you'll have over what you're playing. Steve great lesson as usual. At 10:05 of lesson you are using vibrato with first finger of fret hand and so NOT deadening strings above it. How did you do that without creating noise? That's my big problem and very disheartening as I try to master my string bending technqiue. Is neck width a factor? Seems like even a slightly wider neck would increase space between strings and help reduce adjacent string noise. Yes? Or is it a vibrato technique issue? Advice would be great.
Hey Steve, first off THANK YOU your videos help alot! I was just curious how you get your sound on your ibanez? I picked up an RG760 about 8mo ago (my first guitar) and love it but cant seem to find that sound. I have a practice amp with clean bass mid treb overdrive.. pretty basic.. any tips?
Thanks for watching, C S! One thing to consider is that for many of his guitars (including the Ibanez JEM 7DBK in this video), Steve has replaced the stock pickups. I think the JEM 7DBK originally came with DiMarzio pickups, but Steve has replaced them with EMGs. Also, Steve usually uses amps that have more options to shape the tone than just the basic stuff. One practice amp Steve recommends is the Positive Grid Spark amp, because it can create a wide variety of tones. Love that opening piece you did. Awsome. I live how you explained things here. I have an electric but, a lot of times I dont plug into an amp. Kinda do the electric acoustic. So , I struggle a bit, with keeping things clean. Half is that I should be plugged in. This and the other video like a live stream is great for tips and pointers. If you do another video on playing clean. I think you should feature pieces that would be noisey to play then follow it up with playing again clean but. Telling and shiwing what you are doing to get those notes clean . This way people who are clueless to how to do this can try to play the pieces and with being taught how to specifically clean each of thise notes they can further understand the clean dynamics. Its easy to say base of the palm for low strings and finger tips or whatever to clean the higher strings. But, sometimes getting closer to each situtation makes a bit of a difference. I like Carl Browns lessons. So I try to focus how he plays and positions his hand or fingers. This helps a lot.
Steve, Are those EMG's? Did you not like the original Dimarzios? The reason I ask is that I have an opportunity to purchase a '99 JEM 7D..I actually was the original owner of a '87 Loch Ness Green JEM # 59 ...I loved that guitar but needed an amp at the time so I traded it for a JCM 800 red tolex Marshall stack (wish I still had that too lol) anyway just wondering about your pickups Thanks, Billy

Thank YOU for watching, Kev! And thanks for sharing your experience. :-)

An amazing lesson. A thorough lesson!👌🏾
A beautiful sound in the solo. Nice playing.
Hey thanks so much for your comment and kind words! Did you know the Golden Ticket is now available? This once per year event is only available for Black Friday and you can still get it here guitarzoom.com/goldenticket/earlybird/promo
Outstanding video. This was a great refresher & identifier of the subtle ways a guitar makes unwanted noise. Thanks so much.
Man, that was absolutely beautiful sounding.......
"Shine on you crazy diamond"
Don't mind if I do 😉
Excellent lesson. Thank you!
Got my like for that lick in the beginning, that was sick.
wow im just learning to play the guitar , what an inspiration you are to me , amazing guitar player/teacher thank you
Beautiful tone

Your videos are so great! Been playing for 3 years now and most of my progress is due to your teaching! Thanks for all the work you do!!! \m/ \m/
I need to learn those lick and intro solo! Awesome lessone Steve again, as always.
Its interesting I told myself yesterday I need to pay attention on muting strings and totady you put this video :)
Nice tips, will start incorporating this into my practices!
That solo at the beginning is a damn killer man. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for bringing us such a important class for free! You're awesome :)
Your an amazing guitar teacher and your videos have tremendously helped my playing throughout this year ! Keep rocking
Great lesson. I know I'm doing this subconsciously, but never really paid attention to it until I watched this video.
Steve, you have helped my playing tremendously. It's so rewarding as a player to discover this ability, and must be as rewarding as a teacher to help so many people discover something you're so passionate about. Thank you!!
There's always everything on your channel that I want.. Literally Anything
🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🤘🤘🤘
Hi Steve. Yes, I think we all grab the concept, but putting it into practice is hard. I was told once not to worry about it because it will 'come' when playing, but I think a lot of us need to get this sorted and need help. Any ideas for practising would be a big deal for a lot of us! Cheers. Chris
top tier lesson right here, excellent teaching. 10/10
Thanks. I started playing guitar 15 years ago but I stopped when I had played for something like 5 years. I started producing music and now as I'm getting back to playing guitar coming from more of a production and session musician angle these kinds of lessons are very important. You can't get a good recording with string noise or pick chirp.
That's a good point, Miko. And it's awesome that you're coming back to guitar. :-)

One of the best lesson ever 🙌
Thanks, Steve.
This is honestly the best video I've seen on this topic. Great work Man!
This is exactly what I've been trying to learn recently. After playing my guitar not in the amp and then plugging it in and hearing all the noise I was like wtf. So I've been googling this and getting everyone's lesson, however this is by far the best explained and shown I've seen
Thanks for the video Steve...Am having a lot of problem with unwanted string noises...and want to master this technique but as a beginner who is trying to focus on touching the right fret at the right frequency...this makes it a lot harder...is there any easier technique or is there a way to practice this technique??..also when my finger leaves a string it makes a noise..
I know this is 2yrs old but you took the words right out of my mouth bro.. I was wondering about the same things as im a beginner myself with about 3months under my belt so far...
I just coming back to enjoy the intro and that piece of art guitar
Ha! Thanks!
Just when i thought i was getting somewhere you throw this curve ball into the mix!
1:48 nooooo keep playing ;-;
I'm saying
This looked like some intimidating badass while playing and then he starts talking and he's chill

Steve you're the first guy on YT that has addressed this issue, that I've come across. I found this to be an issue a couple of years ago when I started doing instrumentals. I worked thru all this stuff over time to come to the same practice effects.
I have 3 questions here, which are a bit unclear to me:
Excellent Tutorial, Sir! Many Teachers forget about Muting!
On point and easy to follow as usual. Thank you so much Steve.
what a beautiful playing at the begin,,, applause
Steve, you are definitely the man on RUclips for guitar and now I know how you solve the problem of the flying pinky- you don’t use it 😊
very pedagogical! Thank you very much!
Superb lesson. Ty ty ty!
Great lesson again
Thanks 🙏 for this valuable lesson
Hey my pleasure! So glad the lesson was helpful! Thanks for your comment! 🙂
You are a fine teacher Steve
Now THAT is a solo! Thanks Steve!
Very helpful. Thank you very much.
Very good explanations. Thanks a lot. I was wondering why the songs I played were a bit "messy". Now I understand what I must manage to do to keep control on guitar. It will be maybe a difficult work to do but it's good to know how the pros are doing it !
Very nice video, Steve.
Exactly the advice I've been looking for! Thanks so much!
You're the best Mr. Stine..thank you!
who can dislike this kind of videos?? very informative, sir steve! thanks for this quick lesson.
Perfect and clean 👏👍👍
When can I play like that 😔😔
Thanks for watching Steve's video, and thanks for the kind words! The answer is, the more you play, the more you will develop muscle memory in your hands and fingers. And the more muscle memory you have in your hand and fingers, the more control you'll have over what you're playing.
So keep playing! :-)

Oh God your solo is so... no words for that! Reminded me a bit of Pink Floyd, which is one of my favourite band ;-)
Great advice, I’ve been battling with string noise for a while but this helps massively. Thanks man.
Man Steve what I wouldn’t give to ad lib like you man!!! Amazing
Here's a video Steve made about the Spark amp: ruclips.net/video/vZ8PB-UUwu8/видео.html

Hope this helps! :-)

Brilliant advice - great video!
Great lesson , awesome solo!
this is the best lesson ive seen for muting your strings
Very good lesson as always. Thank you.
That intro was sweet!
What a teacher you Are😍
Thank you so much!
The volume thing is just a natural to Steve to turn it on and off ALWAYS.It may be obvious, but you just don't know how important it is,like all that He teaches. He IS a MASTER.
