    For a beginner like me this is what I am starting to work on now. There are just so many subtle things to learn on guitar sometimes it's overwhelming.

    • @SaxJockey

      I know what you mean. I just take it one step at a time. Pick angle and this muting technique are my latest challenges. Got through all the chromatic, diatonic majors, minors, pentatonic scales and positions, note positions all around the neck, numerous studies and lessons. It's a long term project for me!

      @francesco0185 5 лет назад +20

      You're completely right. Same situation for me (and I played the bass for 29 years!). Be fast, be clean, know the blues scale, the bebop scale, the hybrid picking, alternate picking, chicken picking, know your amp and pedals (so many pedals!), rake, bendings, tremolo bar, strange chords, improvisation, tapping etc. The good thing is I'm not a pro, I can take my time, have fun and make exercises in the evening, in the morning and in the weekend. At least I'm never bored! :)

      IdyllMusic as an advanced acoustic and intermediate electric just take it slow. Don’t overwork yourself. If you practice each thing for 10-20 min a day you’ll eventually learn the right habits without thinking too much

    Great information, and well presented! I remember long time ago as a kid I would think that needing to mute would be like cheating or an indication of not being able to play precise enough. How wrong I was! I´ve since learned to use the technique for chords, and that just opened the whole world to me. I never ventured much into soloing, and only now realize muting is a key thing for sweet clean soloing as well. I would always have problems with noice coming off the bends. My forefinger needs to learn to come to rescue!
    Actually this also explains why it is usually hard to see from videos what notes the artists play, because their fingers seem to always be all over the strings. Now we all know why, so obvious!

    It's amazing how much your videos have leveled up since you posted this seven years ago. On another note, it may be a cheat, but I recently had to record a palm muted part and the high E string kept ringing out. So I just removed it. It's not a good longterm solution, but it did the trick.

  • @mccoy4354

    Muting is probably the hardest thing I have come across while learning. It is so counterintuitive, you are trying to touch the string after you have played it. For other beginners like me, you can try practicing "Killing in the name of" by Rage Against Machine. You have to mute a lot in that song to make it sound clean.

    I was playing for 5 years but I found myself stuck in like the same level of playing until I got into John Frusciante, his playing I just fell in love with & he taught me like a style to mute the stings I don’t want to be heard & that shot my playing level dramatically so I thing this is one of the most important lesson for guitar players especially if lead is your aim

    Unfortunately, some of us can't use the left thumb to mute because we have ridiculously short fingers!! In my case, a surgically repaired left thumb that is short and doesn't bend properly makes that technique somewhat useless.
