This was originally posted for my Patreon supporters with a blank death certificate. It has a link to the obituary of a patient who had died during the production of the film. The original film accurately expressed what I felt at the time of his death.
This version includes the Delta Variant diagnosis. The change was made after learning about the CDC's internal slide presentation which told of the increased transmissibility of the Delta Variant and the increased susceptibility of vaccinated individuals. Although vaccinated patients are rarely hospitalized, compared to the unvaccinated, the increased spread of the virus will result in more unvaccinated people being hospitalized and dying. At this point, I do not have hope for enough new people deciding to be vaccinated before hospitalizations and deaths dramatically increase over the next few weeks.

My best friend has asthma & COPD - haven't seen him since early 2020 because he's anti-vaccine. There are been several outbreaks where I work & I don't want to kill him. Hate not being able to hang out and he thinks I'm being ridiculous/stupid. =(

Thank you. The original version I shared with Patreon members was based on a n actual patient. I included a link to his obituary in the description. He did not die from COVID. I changed it to COVID fir this release because of the profound despair I felt when I realized Delta Variant will not be stopped. There is no way enough people will get vaccinated in time.
@@auburnmedicalgroup I too have considered this. You perfectly portrayed the emotional thoughts you've had. I just showed my teen and he and I are both near tears. As much as I dislike this, only another lock-down could even chance lower numbers than we are facing. And, hopefully, give you and the rest of our medical professionals time to care for those who need without such a severe influx that you're really only at great risk of dying yourself as too many cases run resources and space. I hope you all always remember that you've done your best and that you're an incredible asset to our communities. There will be death. Stay strong and very aware. I think I speak for all when I say we want you all around after this settles. ♡

My heart breaks for you and Dr. Gawayne and all other medical personnel. I so appreciate all of yall's efforts. I am vaccinated and have not changed my habits since restrictions were lifted. I'm still the hermit I became and still wear my mask. My sister refuses to get vaccinated. Her husband is wealthy so has many connections. She says they have the meds that if they get COVID they will be ok. - I don't know the correct terminology. I am concerned about being around her. Thanks again for all you do.
I am concerned for your sister. There is a popular belief that some widely available medications are effective against COVID. Most of the rigorous studies with these medicines find them to not make a difference. There are few sketchy "studies" which suggest a benefit. They usually don't include a placebo arm or have problems in the selection/distribution of test subjects.
It is sad that things are not looking more positive after what we have all been through this last year!
I think that is what makes it so hard.

This is going to sound bad, but I never thought about how a family doctor must feel when a patient dies, especially of something like covid, before watching this.
Yes. It makes it so much worse when these deaths are not only preventable, but patients fight you as you try to help them.
I’m so sorry, my moms a doctor and she sees this regularly. She is the strongest person I know and it is still hard for her.

Thank you for continuing to work so hard and giving us a glimpse into life from the other side. The vaccination programme here in the Wales, UK, has been immense. Thankfully my husband and I were double vaccinated when we caught covid last month, and our teens didn't suffer too much either. We can't afford to be blasé about the threat that covid presents. I’m in UK, and we have seen cases rise again after a lot of our restrictions have been lifted. Hearing on the radio news that 88% of adults have been double jabbed, but only 12% of under 18’s is scary. People here don’t have to wear masks or socially distance anymore. Myself and a lot of my friends are still doing that, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. Stay strong.

I'm so sorry Dr. Vaughn. Losing a patient is one of the hardest things Doctors go though. I feel your pain. Being a nurse with my undergrad I've seen Doctors losing a patient in the ER. Thank you for showing even Doctors have emotional up or down.

It must be very hard and frustrating to loose someone when a vaccine is available to all Americans 12yrs old and over.
Yes. Thanks. We have not yet lost a patient since the Delta Variant arrived, but having to send a critically ill teen to the hospital this week with Delta Variant shook me. Patients and parents are in denial and not getting a vaccine that prevents hospitalizations and deaths.
Please get yourself vaccinated. I am a retired nurse, people are their own worst enemy. We see it over and over. I understand your pain having worked for years in longtime care.
