Fantastic footage from San Francisco... reminds me of the noise and smells at Heathrow back in the early 70s. All the best, from an English ex-plane spotter!!
I liked the old 1960's PSA livery, before they put a "smile" on the front of the plane. There was also a rare TWA Convair 880 that I really liked. I like seeing these vintage memories on RUclips frequently. Keep up the good work.
Beautiful 990A in the Astrojet livery! Those Whitcomb pods give the plane a "blurred motion" speed effect. It looked fast even on the ground. That tail high, nose down attitude! Like a B-58 Hustler.
Landed in SFO in May 1967. I was an 18 year old Marine. Got bused to Travis. Put on a stretched DC 8 and on to Vietnam. Brings back memory’s. Thank God I made it home ok
Glory days of airports. propliners, turbo props, jet liners with black smoke coming out, view decks at some airports all just a few years before the airliner hi jacking started. thanks for video share.
Smoky those 727 & 707 takes off! Is impressive how the 707 jetliner stablished a standard design for much of features for the commercial aviation in the years to come.
Yup I use to go to that parking lot just off 101 to watch the planes taking off in the early 70's. I specifically loved watching the new jumbo jet the 747 coming in to land and take off at SFO. Especially Pan Am and TWA!!!!! 👍🌉
It's hard to add anything to some of the great comments. Personally, I loved the old liveries. I cut my teeth on jet commercial aircraft with an AA flight from Chicago to Newark (CV990), an AA flight from Newark to Chicago (B707), and a Lake Central DC-3 flight from Chicago to Danville, IL. I remember it like yesterday.
I remember the old observation deck at SFO. In the late 60's & early 70's it was a great place to watch these classic airplanes arrive and depart. Back then airline jets had "soul and style" compared to the tasteless wide body garbage flying today.
remember the observation decks Port Cols, Cleveland Hopkins those events in the middle east in the early 70 s ruined it for all. they don t have them anymore
I loved the MKC observation deck especially during the time the TWA Lockheed Constellations were still flying. At night the engines would shoot about 4 feet of flame out each exhaust port in takeoff.
Oh yes - nonstops to JFK, MIA, ORD, DEN, MSY etc. PAA also operated LHR, FCO, HND, HKG, HNL, SYD and several others, but many of those required fueling stops.
Hey! Where did my comment go, about the glamor days of flying, that was up here for the past two years? I was going to respond to a guy that wrote nine hours ago about why he disagreed with my assessment.
BEAUTIFUL!!! There's even a quick glance at a DC6 following a 707 on the taxiway at 01:14! All of these aircraft had more than 2 engines, unlike their more contemporary equivalent, which made them all the more elegant. But in the eyes of today's environmentalists and neighbours alike, they would be seen as abominations... :-)
Katty Koo 4O years ago this month a PSA went down in my hometown of San Diego in the North Park area killing every body due to this accident and other factors PSA went bankrupt and close bussines for ever.😢
@@jorgeybarra3894 : PSA didn't go bankrupt... it merged with the infamous USAir in 1987, a calendar year after making the agreement to do so & only one hour after Air Cal made a merger agreement with American Airlines.
You didn,t need a wind sock at the end of the runways back then you just watched the plane in front of you take off and watched the black smoke to see if you had a crosswind for takeoff
Awesome! I don't care what the environmentalists and politically-correct whackos say.......these turbo-jets pouring out all that black smoke are AWESOME!!!! How I remember them well back in my day. Great video...thanks!

CORONADO

So are we.

Wow! Lovely footage!!
LOVE those old 707's & 727's..I can almost SMELL the kerosene fumes!
"I love the smell of burning jet fuel in the morning!"
tonyde52 You took the words right out of my mouth!! 🛫✈️🛬 💨
I've always liked the smell of the jet fuel when ever I went to the airport as a kid, too bad not like this anymore.
Nice trip down memory lane. Worked at SFO for UAL as a line A&P during that day and age
Wow. Look at that exhaust.
This is great stuff here. I love the CV-990 @ 1:10 and the crab angle takeoff at the end.
Peyote Pete Too bad the Coronado was a commercial failure. Very elegant and fast plane.
Peyote Pete it does in videos
Did you grow up in Millbrae? I did too!!! Loved going to the old Bayshore and watch airplanes take off. Quite a marvelous sight to see.

Did they build around the existing SFO terminal or did they tear it down?
American should bring back the lightning bolt livery

over those houses."

That was a good movie which I have on DVD as the sequels, I even still have them on VHS as well.
Agree with him.
Noise abatement my ass!
Don't move next to an airport if you don't appreciate great airliners and jet noise.
Silent footage - Noisy jets... Gotta love 60's aviation
I remember the old observation deck at SFO. In the late 60's & early 70's it was a great place to watch these classic airplanes arrive and depart. Back then airline jets had "soul and style" compared to the tasteless wide body garbage flying today.

Everything was much louder in those days. The UA DC8 rotation at the end says it all!

Harold VanSlyck, remember sometimes it was so hot that they would have to fly to KCI to load up passengers in the jets.
Great post!
Those where the days..
I think I saw Steve McQueen running under that Pan Am 707
TheCream14 .... nice reference!!!!
The days of the smokey engines, nice.
Ooh...a Qantas advert popped up before the start of this video ☺
Wow!!!GREAT!!!
Do you have video of air india😀😀😀
noisy 707s........love it !
Hi, is this footage free for use or is it not to be used
Wow! The planes were real smokers back then.
Boy what I wouldn’t give to fly, once again aboard the 707, 720B, DC-8-61 ... but without the pollution. 😉
Environment be damned, we've got jets!
looks like the speed on the video is 2X in parts of the video. Also, the P & W JT8D engines were ground rumbling loud back in the day.
is this video sped up, or did planes really taxi that fast?
I do think portions of the film are indeed sped up, especially the PSA 727 take-off.
The exhaust from those old planes, look like the exhaust from the Russian airliners and fighter jets of today :D
Were there nonstops east of Salt Lake City or to Portland or San Diego?
Oh yes - nonstops to JFK, MIA, ORD, DEN, MSY etc. PAA also operated LHR, FCO, HND, HKG, HNL, SYD and several others, but many of those required fueling stops.
Espetáculo de vídeo!

Can't watch clips of the 707 without thinking of Joe Patroni.

In those days, the people inside the planes--passengers and crews--smoked as much as the engines did outside the planes!
:50....I guess that PSA's days before the smile lol

The smile livery didn't come to PSA until 1976

THE GLORY DAYS!

sandiegotrojandawg Well said!
Amen, brother; amen!!! Resend noise abatement!
sandiegotrojandawg I wouldn't car if those old turbojets gave me cancer either
sandiegotrojandawg I don’t care either
oh my god that exhaust
PSA gives you a lift!
Muito bom
I swear I can smell the jet fuel from here.
