It is so clear to the whole world how the US is run by rich white people who point the finger at everyone but themselves as being the “problem,” when it is, in fact, the privileged white man perpetuating the problems and excusing each other for victimizing the rest of us.

    Guidelines written to help Judges decide sentencing suggests 19-24 years for this. He got less than 4. If his name was Tyrone, or Pedro he'd be in prison for the next two decades. This judge should be ashamed of himself.

      "Justice is blind" is a dumb metaphor anyways. Like when I hear that, it makes me think that the justice system is incompetent because it has no moral and/or factual compass. Which is true a lot of the time tbh. Maybe "justice is blind" is an apt metaphor after all.

    • @LadyDoomsinger
      @LadyDoomsinger 5 лет назад +4

      Justice isn't just blind, it's deaf and stupid as well.
      The only way to have a fair legal system, is by separating the judge, jury and defendant - they should never see or interact with each other; if they do not know whether the defendant is white or black, rich or poor, influential or a nobody, they'd have to judge entirely on the facts of the case, and if the defendant doesn't know his judge or jury, he can't bribe or threaten them. The lawyers should then act as the middlemen, passing the relevant information between the different parties, that way all communication between the judge, jury, defendant and prosecution would have to go through several steps (i.e. from Defendant, to defendant's lawyer, to judge and jury, to prosecution - and vice versa).
      Think it'll work like that? Have I overlooked some critical flaw in the system?

    • @tommyl.dayandtherunaways820
      @tommyl.dayandtherunaways820 5 лет назад +1

      @@LadyDoomsinger I think, as with most things, it comes down to striking a balance between effectiveness and expediency. With that much communication, it risks becoming like a game of telephone. You're essentially putting your trust in each party to accurately relay the information to the next and so on. Theoretically, if everyone does their part in a timely manner, it would be a great system. The only problem is that we as humans have a tendency to botch even the best laid plans.

The president may also possess certain privileges that prevent prosecution. I'm no expert on the law tho. On top of that, many may fear Trump's base to much to go after him, which is great strategy on his part because at a certain point he can pretty much do whatever he wants, although I was more hoping politicians would fear us enough to do what is right, unfortunately Trump doesn't have to deal with that fear, he just plays the "poor me," card to his base and gets them mad at his opponents for "presidential harassment." @Estella Serrano, actually with THIS sentencing he was found guilty of 8 {out of 18 counts} by a jury in VA., they were a hung jury on the remaining 10 counts & for whatever reason, OSC, chose not to prosecute those extra 10 counts. Perhaps after he entered a 'Plea Agreement" of the other charges in the D.C. Circuit, the one where he 'agreed' to be a cooperating witness...but didn't. As for Judge Ellis, remember back in August of last year, during the trial, when the judge bizarrely harassed the prosecution ad nauseum, i.e., not allowing them to use the phrase Special Council, etc.? My other query about that trial was the ONE juror who wouldn't agree to convict on the remaining 10 counts of the Indictment, as it was, in scope, almost identical to the 8 that he/she did vote to convict on.
      At any rate, even with this "token" sentence, he still gets both credit for time served {9 months} & will be eligible for "good time" {there is no parole system for Federal Prisons}, so just on this alone, he could be out in 3 years. Sucks.

    It was obvious that Judge Ellis put himself firmly on the defence team right from the start. I’m surprised the sentence was so long. The way Ellis constantly attacked the prosecution I expected something along the lines of an hour on the naughty step or a few weeks in the penthouse of one of Trump’s hotels complete with staff.
    Ellis commented that “being rich isn’t a crime.” Evidently he didn’t consider the fraudulent, dishonest, illegal & treacherous way Manafort got rich in the first place much of a crime either.
    If what a rich, white, Trump supporter does is just fine with another rich, white Trump supporter what’s the point of having laws and sentencing guidelines in the first place?
    We can only hope that Judge Jackson rectifies this debacle and has some respect for our laws - regardless of the financial status, ethnicity or political affiliations of the convicted felon.

Unless you were in the courtroom then I assume you watched on TV like the majority of us. If you couldn’t tell that there was a rich white guy being sentenced by another rich white guy then the color setting on your TV needs some serious adjustment.
      And if you think that if the guy being sentenced by a rich white guy was of a different ethnicity the result would be the same then you haven’t been paying attention to a seriously biased justice system.
      The bias that exists in our justice system is racist, pointing it out is not. And nothing has highlighted it more than this skewed judgement.

      What Manafort was charged with was illegal, so your point is? You think defrauding the IRS out of millions is less of a crime than a simple weed charged? You are a fool. No, I don't smoke or sell weed before you go there.

    • @JJ21210
      @JJ21210 5 лет назад +6

      The terrible thing is, this judge wasn't paid off -- I'd bet my life on it. He's a privileged, old (78) white guy who was appointed by Raygun, and he's doing what he thinks is his duty -- because those sociopaths honestly believe that white-collar crime is victimless. It's almost enough to make me start believing in God, so I can start believing in hell for people like Judge Ellis. .... You might want to look online for articles (in the past 6 mos.) from the NYT and WaPo about his bias.

      The justice system is a big joke. Starting with the fact that if you have money you can bail out while poor slobs have to stay in jail while their case gets resolved. People with money can go home, take a shower, dress in nice clothes, come to court looking nice while the poor have to come to court looking like crap, in an ill-fitting jail-issued jumpsuit, looking guilty to begin with. The rich can surround themselves with an army of attorneys so they will never have to spend a single day in jail -- doesn't Trump have about 17 attorneys working for him, plus he likes to use the Department of Justice too, even though that is not its purpose?
