      In my friend group there was a public shaming/ostracism and I was reluctant to participate because it seemed unfair. One of the (not targeted) friends was mad at me for not joining in the dog pile and said I had an obligation to call out anyone who had done something bad. I had to remind him of the similarly bad things he had done and never got caught for that he told me about in confidence, and ask if he really meant what he just said. He changed his mind quickly.

Look at what Lewinsky made of herself, of her horrific experience- she probably felt the same way so many times, but she’s still here, and now she stands as an example for how to endure this type of experience and recover. ThatOneGirl I very much agree with your first paragraph. How society views the different genders experiencing the same event is usually sexist. And she most assuredly lost respect and decency from many people, unfairly. But I think Clinton did too...certainly not to her extent, but I know plenty of people that think he is an indecent pig who did something extremely wrong. And rightfully so. But that statement took me aback as well....no one asked if he was going to change his name. That’s telling.

    • @Dliciousization
      @Dliciousization 4 года назад +68

      @ThatOneGirl Idk if I would characterize it as the same mistake. Bill was married, was a prominent public figure, and also had an insane power disparity over her. To my memory she has said that the encounter was consensual, but one person is abusing a ton of public trust and his office, and is setting a terrible precedent of behavior. Monica on the other hand was a completely private figure before any of this happened, and was subordinate to Bill.
      I would say she made a mistake, but far less of one than Bill, but paid for it with one of the most infamous public shaming events in history.

    • @PR2k9
      @PR2k9 4 года назад +40

      @@Dliciousization Bill should have gotten it worse than Monica. The most powerful man at the time making such a blunder should have been met with at least the level Monica did. • @bentroyer1
      @bentroyer1 4 года назад +4

      @ThatOneGirl I mean your right but bill already had a name. His public image was vibrant. So this blemish was small. Monica's public image was the blemish. She didn't have a public image until this point. This is a contributing factor.
      Also dude's really aren't as cool with cheating as you seem to be saying. It's not just fine in most circles. It is definitely rarely supported. But generally their relationship with their partner is not something discussed it's not part of your relationship. So you don't really judge them one way or another for it. Kind of like if your friend constantly bragged about being able to slack off at work. That is not a demension of thier life that your relationship with them intersects with. Even tho debatable its definitely wrong they are not holding up thier end of a agreement. I get that its a bit apples and oranges with severity but the same idea.

    The “worst aunt” thing reminds me a lot of the “hot McDonald’s coffee” lawsuit. It’s an interesting story that people should look into but basically. The woman almost died from 3rd degree burns from her coffee (which turned out to be just under boiling). She didn’t want to sue but they only gave her $800 for the $20000 out of pocket expenses (or something like that). And it happened to about 700 other people. In the lawsuit, (if I remember correctly) the main reason the jury sided with the woman was because McDonalds basically treated the 700 affected people as a number instead of people. The woman actually settled for less than what was settled in court. Then McDonalds and other companies dragged her name through the mud basically to discourage people from sueing them.

She was a grown-ass woman (22 years old, not 15 or even 18) and *very* ambitious and a DC beltway insider (or she would never have had access to the POTUS. they don't hand that out). Don't infantilize her.
      According to Lewinsky (did you even watch the interview?) she was severely traumatized, not by having sex with the POTUS but "in the end by how it played out"...as a result of HER nonconsentual decision to go public about 100% consentual sex.
      If you're going to stretch the definition of "Me Too moments" to include this, then really its going to end up covering pretty much all sex since the dawn of time. and it will be too watered down to matter anymore.

      D Deys I hear your opinion, and respectfully disagree. I feel that in order for punishment to be effective as a deterrent for any behavior, the punishment must fit accordingly, and MUST END with some acknowledgement that the punishment received was related directly to the actions or behaviors exhibited by that individual, not as a result of the individual themselves. But this is the internet, and there will always be differing opinions, so my hope is that as the discussion of Ms. Lewinsky inevitably continues, we can remember that it was the actions of two grown adult human beings that the nation disagreed with, not one named individual.

      @@happyplace8452 Punishment is a price to be paid from the perpetrator for damages done - in this case, Lewinsky hurt the president's marriage, and she hurt the country's sense of dignity and pride. She has agency and was intelligent enough to be at the position she was with the president - she knew what she was doing and what would happen if she was caught. She should be miserable and be stripped of US citizenship - not exalted on these sorts of shows as the commenters here see her as. And Bill Clinton should be punished much more than he was, too. It's not just her at fault.

      I've always loved Monica and even as a kid I knew what she was going through was fucked up. I'd ask grown adults why she was being targeted when this should be the President's scandal, not her. She wasn't even married. It made no sense. It was just straight bullying.

      Yeah, it was totaly messed up how she chased clout and then got it. Y'know by bragging to her co-workers nonstop about the affair until another spiteful and jealous witch recorded her and also by never washing and saving the dress Bill came on. She wanted to be the next Marylin Monroe but instead just became Marylin Monhoe. Poor her.

      @@casucasueq4479 Repeat after me: Victim blaming is simply a form of denial.
      She screwed up, and she has owned and admitted that she did so. Her public punishment for her public flaws has far exceeded any reasonable balanced response. For what she did in her 20's? That deserves some condemnation.
      Her response in her 40's has been far more about protecting others who might be subject to cruel and unusual public pillory for whatever flaw real or imagined, and for that I applaud her.
      In an ideal world you do the crime, you do the time, and then we all move on. But that doesn't seem a standard equally applied.

      @@casucasueq4479 this is blatant sexism on every level, what she endured. Bill Clinton needs to retroactively relabel every headline with her name, and we should focus on a white male of power exercising his affluence and privilege to take advantage of someone, 2hile cheating on his spouse-- a victim in her own way, as her spouse cheated on her and trashed their name.
      You definitely missed out on your Workplace Harrassment training, which states anyone in any position over someone else should NEVER attempt relationships with other employees because the employees will feel pressured to maintain it and have a positive facade when they don't want it at all, out of fear of income or job damages, among other things.
