so yeah, germany has it, and is a strong economic power... nothing unusual there. the only ones that haven't figured it out the 'muricans that still believe trump is a genius who is going to save them from the menace of not being 'murican enough.

Many countries have welfare systems set up as a safety net that are outside Europe as well. Just some countries where I have been and I or a family member received free or almost free healthcare in and outside Europe: in Montevideo, Uruguay, picking up a colleague coming from Buenos Aires, I had a stomach virus and was throwing up outside the bus area, as soon as I came in the station someone whisked me away in a wheel chair, took me in to an emergency medical service, (available for all travelers inside their station/mall free of charge), got a shot that stopped the enterocolitis' vomits I was having, prescriptions (cheaper w/o insurance than here), etc., I paid..$0 for the medical attention and the meds, maybe $20 tops. They can't decline medical attention by law. In Belgium while attending my cousin's wedding (a physician herself), same thing, mom got treated, we had to pay, but insurance covered all of it. They sent a bill to the US. We didn't have to pay until then. In Italy and Spain, the same, I got medications very cheap. The people living and working there pay almost nothing for meds, a Euro. Taiwan...also has a descent system according to my brother who has used it...and it's not the only Asian country that has it. It's just us that have a lousy system, and politicians are frankly pretty clueless about how healthcare works in the 'developed world.' Some have mixed, public and private offerings (luxury items like your own room, etc, you pay an additional premium, including even dental and vision). The main precept is that healthcare is not a commodity, it is a service to human beings and I am pretty sure hospitals for profit are not common nor legal in some cases, its considered a basic human right. It's inhumane to let someone die because they can't afford preventive check ups. This happens in he US everyday, and the poor are the ones getting screwed. My cousin had a brain tumor...within two weeks from start of process, she had the brain surgery....all good (In Belgium). People here are brainwashed into believing that socialized healthcare is socialism...not understanding that social development of a country entails providing these services to residents, offering a better quality of life, magnifying opportunities for upward mobility with free or low cost education, instead of spending the amounts the US does in military budgets (see Costa Rica with no military). All benefit, the people, the country, and humanity as a whole. Sadly, we are far from that kind of evolution in America. They make education also a commodity and keep citizens as ignorant fools, easily brainwashed, uneducated masses that will vote for greedy politicians who are completely detached from the plight of the average voter, and only care about lining their pockets with the mighty dollar. People went bankrupt in this country because of medical bills until the Obama mandate that the orange clown had overturned last year by his puppets in congress. Let's hope we don't continue to regress into barbarism (by Western standards). I sure hope Pelosi is using reverse psychology, and the Nightmare reality show in Pennsylvania avenue ends soon because of low ratings.

Approximately 80% of plane accidents are due to pilot error (according to Boeing - 90% according to an aviation engineer friend who was on a Go Team for a major airline at one point in their career). These two 737 Max incidents happen to be suspected software issues in the flight control system. MCAS was developed to cut down on the chances of the plane stalling due to, wait for it, pilot error.
The biggest issue I see so far was not disclosing the MCAS feature to pilots or how to manually override it in the event the airspeed indicators went bonkers.
@John Sullivan, do you know what a stall is, or does that need to be explained first? (Hint: it does not mean the plane won't start)

soag87 The biggest issue is clearly that it is seemingly faulty as reported by numerous reports on the federal database... on top of the fact that Boeing decided not to update training manuals or inform pilots and that a software update should have been pushed by January (now delayed to April) after Lion Air but because of the Government Shutdown the FAA did nothing to enforce it, this tragedy happened. And Ethiopian airlines pilots were trained to use MCAS after the previous incident so you can’t really say it was unfamiliarity with the system... Also the fact that acting head of the FAA, Dan Elwell, used to be a lobbyist for Boeing and other Plane Manufacturers so the whole branch is suspect. And they repeatedly asked for the blackbox to be sent to them and not Europe is kind of suspicious but not unreasonable. And yet the fact that the entire world besides the FAA has grounded 737 MAX 8 says a lot. No matter how you look at it, this situation is a clusterfuck.

Single payer medicine for all is what the civilized world outside of the US has and they're doing just fine. Americans spend much more on medicine and still can't provide medical care for all. The fact is that medicine costs too much in America and that's because people with insurance don't question the cost. There's virtually nobody to keep pharmaceutical companies and health providers in check. Single payer system allows the government to negotiate a reasonable cost because it becomes the primary customer.
Single payer doesn't mean you can't have private care providers. There'll still be private hospitals and private practices for rich people and they can still buy insurance to cover the additional costs to get speedier and better service. It works fine and costs less for other developed countries.
