- In This Video I will show you my New Cornwell 12 Pc. Snap Ring Pliers Set as well as one pair of Snap-On Snap Ring Pliers. I will discuss the difference's between what Snap Ring Pliers are, how they are used and on what you would ever be using them on in the automotive field. I will also show you my Snap-On Retaining Ring pliers and discuss what makes them so different. I will sit down with you at my computer and we will go through some of the other manufactures out there, what I like about their product, what I dislike about their product, some of the price difference's and what exactly I would consider to be a good value for your money. I will also talk about some of the gimicky Snap Ring pliers out there and my experience with using some of them. I will also discuss my experience with the snap ring pliers sets that you might see at Harbor Freight and my experience with their product. I hope this video is informative and useful to you.

I am approaching the 2 year mark in my automotive career and my buddy who would always let me borrow his more specialty tools like this just left the shop to go work for Rivian, so I have to buy my own set now. great video man! i just broke my craftsman ones i bought in high school so i upgraded to the SK set you have listed here and love them! i got them for around $170 since my shop has an account with auto value parts store and they are an SK dealer! They warranty them as well! i just send the broken ones back with the parts driver and they give me a new pair! I love SK tools! they hold up well and have lifetime warranty! I cant recommend them enough! They cost less then Snap-On and Matco! so dont be afraid to buy them! also i do love Lang stuff as well! i have both the tread restore kit and the slack adjuster tools and they are great! both Lang and SK have helped me to get great tools without racking up tool truck debt! Say what you want about Langs "Gimmicky" switch sets but my sets been through hell and back without fail. I wore two sets of tips out and I can buy tip sets online or swing in my local Napa and get them since Lang makes Napa & Channel Lock both & for $15 I have an all new ready to work tool set all over again. I never lost my screw/tips yet mine always stay tight but Id just use Loctite if I did get a screw that backs off in one so it stays tighter. I just put my tips/Allen tool in my pocket inside a pill container and tool in my bag or pocket. Very convenient tittle tool set.
All those big kits are fancy, I had a few but break a tip (and you will break tips) so your SOL and you must go buy a new expensive tool/set again. They aren't cheap and most kits don't even sell individual pliers!
Oh' btw, Lang snap ring pliers are Made in USA with very good steel unlike most others today that are made in China with that junk China steel. Just say'n...
I have both the snap on set and lang set they are both made by lang identical set same manufacturer markings lang is half the price or less. Knipex I have used a co worker has that set they are perhaps a bit less universal as others so buy the complete set so you have all of them you need. That being said the knipex set is the best set in my opinion very well made and sturdy with no flexing. Lang, snap on, Cornwall excellent choice they all appear to be manufactured by the same company and are identical.

Thanks again Justin. Always appreciate the links and research you've put into your tools. Again, here in Canada, we don't get the range of tool competitors. Fortunately we have Princess Auto for the heavy duty stuff thats expensive, but will get you by for the time being. Ive been buying lots of tools of the Mac truck lately, cause he's the most consistent one to come by my shop, and they have some very comparable stuff to snap-on at about 75% the cost. I was kind of choked today though, and wanted to ask you about their products. I went use my Mac pick set for the first time today, and the grip slipped off first tug, then the screw on metal handle under it was loose! I was kind of choked cause I went ahead and thread locked all the threaded handles on tight, then glued the handles on after that...got em all perm-snug but was my first disappointment with Mac to date. I wasn't sure if I heard it in one of your videos, about Mac "re-branding", but it opened my eyes to the fact that no "one" tool company can really do it all, as Ive seen you prove it in your videos. Anyhow, wonder if you could give me your quick 2 cents on Mac...if you have them down there. Im just the guy who absolutely hates anything crap, and believes it should be a crime to manufacture it. I know I won't choose the best tools the first time, but am gonna try damn hard to!! Or if anyone else has some input, Id much appreciate it! PS. I have a friend in Germany who is gonna buy some German tools and ship em here to try out!! Stoked!

Matco also has a set made by Knipex,the tips are much stronger.A lot more money.Their other snap ring pliers are made in Taiwan,my dad bought a pair when we had Matco come in,said made in Taiwan on them

I just picked up a pair from Tractor Supply that has three separate heads that are all interchangeable different angles for about 10 bucks made by Erwin with a lifetime guarantee just so I can finish up at this ball joint job on this Jeep I figured I could use a set you never know when you going to need them but I will say they do seem fairly well made

If money isnt a issue i always recommend knipex. I have alot of Lang stuff since big brands rebrand them but knipex is top notch
If you have trouble on wing nuts like you complained about in the video you can use an adujustable wrench to break it loose next time.

I got in a "debate" in the comment section of a video about 1/4 drive socket sets the other day. I was slammed for suggesting that $750 for the Snap-On set was a bit absurd and not an indication of increased "quality" relative to the astronomical price. To the degree that all of the "tool truck" brands actually rebrand and mark up various tools like Lang, paying that 50-100 percent markup seems unwise. I realize the previously mentioned 1//4" drive socket set is not rebranded. The point is that the price(s) of a lot of this stuff is simply far too high. And a lot of times the actual quality isn't really there. Snap ring pliers are a great example. Personally the only ones that I have found that consistently work and don't break, aren't fiddly to work with, and have the warranty (which is always the last stand taken by the tool truck price defenders on the internet) is Knipex. I have found the the Channelock ones are good also, though changing the tips is a bit fiddly and the tool itself is sometimes a bit large for the job.

Hello I'm a newbie to this. But I have a pair of what looks like snap ring pliers but, it has a spring in between them but the tip of this is shaped like small rectangles. Can you tell me what kind of tool it is.

Why did you not remove and replace a snap ring to show how to do it?
Could you have filed down the ends of the HF set to make them fit? If so it would save quite a lot of money.
I tried to save the money and wasn't worth the aggravation HF is useless buy a quality set you'll thank yourself

No go bought a set for the junkyard. They did what I needed them to but nowhere as nice as my lang or knipex.

You ever try the Harbor freight Icon brand snap ring pliers?
Yes dont bother driving to harbor freight. Just throw your cash in the garbage to save the gas money ...worthless set not worth the aggravation.
I was curious about the HF icon line also since it isn't supposed to be the typical cheap flimsy junk. The icons are priced much much higher so had hoped the quality was better. I know HF compares it to snap on, which seems like a joke but wondered if anyone had used them and has an unbiased opinion. Icon "apprars" to be a better machine line when you pick it up and look at it. Whether it works and holds up is a different story.
New snap on is a quick release instead of screw. Much nicer. Push button and change

Unfortunately, this didn't show the tool in actual use. This would have been MUCH more helpful. Sadly, therefore, this was not EVERYTHING I wanted to know about snap ring pliers.

@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway I simply wanted to see you actually use the tool to install and remove a snap ring. It would also have been useful to show how it it used when the ring is inside as well as outside. You could also show when you need to use a snap ring tool which has a right-angle attachment. What about large snap rings? Do you need a different tool, or can you adapt a small tool? How about automotive snap rings? Do they require a stronger, bigger tool?
I can go on, but the point is, you really didn't provide much information that I could use when actually doing the work.
