Follow John and Seth as they hunt north central Pennsylvania for timber rattlesnakes. The guys find plenty of rattlesnakes in this video. The guys catch two huge rattlers and John decided to tag out on a nice 50 Inch Black Phase Rattsnake. His biggest yet! Watch till the end!
That owl got hit by a car. That's what they do when they're concussed.
wow, poor creature. I hope no timber rattlesnake eats it, elegant creature.
I love watching your videos. I like the idea of going out to hunt for Rattle snakes, then I remembered how big of a wimp I am when it comes to snakes lol
I'm in Maryland and I know first hand what winters are like around here and Pennsylvania it's incredible how snakes can survive in this region of the country.
The winters in those places are a cakewalk. I live in a region where bullsnakes and rattlers and gartersnakes and hognose snakes survive winters that can witness -40 with windchills down to -60.
The deer and turkey hunting, yes sir! I'm on board with. Screwin' around with rattlesnakes....
Ya'll are bat-shit crazy!!
Bat shit crazy nah the fuckers are insain I would do it to just never found any around my place so
Jus' Nuts that's funny!!
They arent that hard to handle as long as you respect what it can do. Dont be kissing them or sticking them in your pocket.😉
@@shaneheavy67 Yes, and I USED TO BE MARRIED. Her Dad said she was easy to handle as he handed her to me...🤦♂️ So nope, you can do all the snake handling and I will be with Jus'Nuts at the Deer and Turkey section
I'm studying timber rattlesnakes for my major and I just want to let you know they are heavily endangered in most parts of the US
TheFilthy Casual yea Texas but ppl still kill them bc a dead snake is a good snake
They're fine they get rid of pests
@@poppingwithsamuel2828 I used to think the same thing. Once you realize these animals are not evil and simply DEMAND respect, and then show the animal that respect, they turn into beautiful creatures. A snake that is killed for no reason but for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time is wrong. It is not difficult to relocate these animals. Its not like a nuisance bear that will keep coming back. Snakes are important to the ecosystem, as their primary food source consists of small rodents, mice, rats, birds, ect. Mostly pests, which inhabit your home in the winter months.
We got some dinosaurs timbers down her in Alabama! 11 footers
@@BigMerkGee as a herpetology major I've gotta say that's incredible, wish we could get some like that over here, our ecosystem is suffering from their absence
Kinda new to shake hunting terms...so if you tag a snake it's good, but if a snake tags you it's bad?
Erwin Schmidt very much so yes😂😂😂
TAG ! Your it !
Ultimate game of freeze tag
hahahahaha, love this comment.
Erwin Schmidt Yes when a rattlesnake tags you it’s very bad
I'm naive to this, so I'm just curious. What are you hunting them for, to eat, to collect venom, or what? Because they're quite good for the food chain and mammalian control.
Luke Jacobs if you had ears, you would have heard him say that he eats the snake, and sells the hide.
Stupid question...when you guys keep a snake what do you do with it?
I'm a sportsman and love my hunting. I'm not one to touch snakes but I love to watch them in the wild. Here in New Hampshire I believe I may have seen one many years ago. It was a thrill to watch it slither away.
Would like to know the manufacture of your boots. have you had a snake strike them, and did they protect you? Thanks
Irish Setters. Here is a link to a gear list we recommend for snake hunting on amazon amzn.to/2nUbnMj
You are a very intelligent man and an incredible outdoorsman. Please reconsider publicizing rattlesnake hunting. Their numbers are dwindling across their range and you are disturbing important gestation areas.
What type snake boots do you like? I've been looking for a pair. Also, how do you kill the ones you want to keep? I hunt similar areas in NY, but have yet to see a rattler. Good stuff. Thx.
well, the boots in the video are irish setters. They are not cheap. i havent used them long enough to give a solid review. My last boots I had for 10 years I believe they were cabelas brand with Gortex. Problem was that they stopped being water proof after 3 years. I have only had the pair of boots I have now for 2 years. If they stay waterproof for another 3-4 years then i would be happy. They still are good for being snake proof but i got tired of walking in high grass covered in dew and having my feed and leg soaked the rest of the day. At the end of the video there is a link on how I tan the snake skin. I show in that video how I kill them. Just step on the head and cut it off with a knife.
You guys are very very ethical I enjoy watching your videos I've watched a lot of videos of rattlesnake hunting did some myself and you are by far the best enjoy watching you keep up the good work
Where in central PA were you? I'm from Lewistown originally.
im just wondering do yall take them and have them milked for anti venom before skinning them ?
How do you kill and process them. How do you prepare the meat for eating?
Hey I dig your videos , where do rattle snakes actually live in parts of pa ,. Poconos further ? And how far do they travel . Thankyou very much . Looks like fun and damn pa is loaded with em .
they range from the southwest portion clear to the northeast. With the most being in central pa. A big male can travel up to 5 miles away from the den through the summer.
What part of Pennsylvania is this because I grew up in Kenet square all my life and I have never seen a rattlesnake in the wild
I am somewhat conflicted about snake hunting, as many of these snakes are threatened or endangered in parts of their range. However you presented an informative video on how this species is managed and your interest in conserving the species. Too many of the videos I see here are of the "thrill-seeker" type which often are inaccurate and sensationalize the dangers these snakes allegedly pose. Thank you for posting this video.
Nice video sure doesn’t look like those snakes are threatened or endangered seemed like they were everywhere
@@truly3743 I live where these guys hunt, trust me. They're numbers are dwindling very quickly. People go into these gestation sites, and mess with them, and it's an issue. They have historical sites, generational sites they go to for hibernating, basking, and breeding. Different sites. They tend to move around these sites depending on what they're doing. I don't like that people hunt these snakes, much less invade what is sacred spaces to them without having a great reason. For example studying them. Learning about their behavior, and life cycles. There's a historical den that now has no inhabitants because people go in and dig them out, and bother them.
These snakes take a decade to reach sexual maturity. As someone who lives here, and has tracked them for 12 years now, I have to say... It's getting incredibly hard to find them, and find large adults. In the last couple years I've mostly found 2-3 foot timbers, and one 4ft. Snake. Ten years ago it was easy to find 4-5 foot snakes.
Many people also don't realize, if you move these snakes sometimes as much as a hundred yards off it's spot they travel somewhere and sit there until they die.
These guys shouldn't be pulling snakes that they're not keeping. Too many people go out around here and bag dozens of these and take them back to camp and let them go, and they'll all die around the camp within a couple weeks. I wish to God they would limit the permits they give out. And raise the limit on keeping. 50" or more, male.. females you shouldn't even be bothering. Once you find one or two in a spot like they did, you should just leave the spot. They're probably breeding.
Did you scrape the dead skin off to shed after it was killed, or did u keep it alive until it shed itself
I kept it alive a short while until it shed
Sweet video! You found quite a few snakes. Where I live it is illegal to kill any snakes, even rattlers
WHO_TEE_WHO you must be in tn.
I dont wanna seem like a douchebag but..... Theres an nocturnal bird that lives in the trees standing in the middle of a road in broad daylight.... And you say " i wonder if its hurt"........ Juuuuuuuust saying.. lol
...and there's blood on it's right wing.
I know right lollll
1. He said he didnt see the blood
2. It could of fell out the nest and thats why its there
3. He didnt kick the owl he pushed it
4. At least he didnt run over it like a lot of people would
CJ now that being said i havent finished the video read the comments said they skined the snake and i take back my defense
Glad im not the only one with that thought. "Gee, i wonder if the young howl standing in the road that doesn't fly away even after i kick is hurt." I would say something about their intelligence but they are hunting rattlesnakes. That reallly should say everything you need to know.
Love the snakes, so much I can't kill em but love to find them. Think the owl was partially hit by a car it appears, you can see the damage on his wing when he opens them. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks! Yep, we noticed the wound after we watched the footage back later on.
We used to hunt snakes here in SW/ VA. and the ones you got there are much bigger than any we killed. There was an old barn, and an old dilapidated house we went to once, and that was the largest kill by numbers. The tally was 31 copperheads, 5 rattlesnakes, 4 blowing vipers, as they are called, Some of the old timers used to call the blowing vipers chicken killers. They are only slightly venomous, painful, but not fatal usually, none the less they were killed. One of the most scary, but yet enjoyable snake kills of the times. There used to be a bounty on the big, fat, timber rattlers, because they had injured, several hunters in a few years past. One was fatally bit. Now days, its just for sport, and in mid summer, they are not too hard to find. There were 7 of us, and we did use extreme caution, not only with the snakes, but each other. We used .22 pistols, and rifles. A couple had shotguns, in the event we ran into a bunch of them at one place. Great job Guys. Keep up the good work.
That owl had blood on its wings ☹️
Right shoulder
yep, we realized that after we watched to footage back at the end of the day.
was just gonna say that...it is hard to see sometimes when looking through a lens. Hope it was ok.
I would have taken a look around for its nest. To try and return it to it.
It was almost fledged. The parents would still feed it while on the ground. By the way, it is a barred owl.
Frightening. I’m glad you two videoed this because I’ll never be in a place like that, but seeing it from the safety of my iPad is good!
I don't get the hunting for snakes thing, but I do see that the guys have a lot of respect for snakes and the law, and that's a good thing. Stay safe.
Really amazing your respect for the snake that size and age!!! Most people just bash it with a rock!
Where in North Central Pa are y'all hunting em? I'm from Southern PA myself. Bedford County.
Awesome video gents, You guys got way bigger balls than me!!!!
What is the point of catching them, what do you plan on doing with them
hey leatherwood outdoors. I got my first venomous snake permit this year and was wondering if I could meet up with you fellas and learn the ropes from a few experienced professionals
Hi Jimmy. Sorry, we do not take others out hunting. We do not do any guiding or anything. If we ever do then we would take others with us, but its only a close group of friends that we hunt with. good luck this season. we have enough good advice in our videos to help others with how to snake hunt, I know its not as good as being there in person, but try to find someone to go with you always and never hunt alone.
I hiked the Fred Woods trail today. Thanks John and guys for your videos.
Glad to see another video put out!
These snakes were almost hunted to extinction in my area (New Hampshire) you still don’t see them. I’ve only seen 1 my entire life
Im from new Hampshire and was reseraching snakes because I find them daily and came across the timber rattlesnake on the Nh fishing game site and now I am here.
@Claudio Como yes it is. It's people with that sort of attitude on why humans cause the most destruction then anything else on this planet. The only bad thing is humans....these snakes rarely strike unless extremely prevoked but you wouldn't know that. You just think. Oh snake bad.....
I did not know rattlesnake poisonous rattlesnakes Leo in Pennsylvania I thought Pennsylvania was cold climate I live in Michigan I know we have rattlesnakes but not like those okay I learned something today rattlesnakes in North America oh my goodness got to watch where I stepped sit and Stan from now on oh my goodness shalom shalom
wow near what town are you hunting in !!!! Titusville PA area ??
Where in PA are you? I'm in western NY and I want to go herping for timbers so bad
Chris L tbh I think they live in most large wilderness in Pennsylvania. I’ve found one in the laurel highlands in eastern pa, but for the most part they are in the south/ southwest
How mutch would you sell a big hide like that for? That's if your even allowed to sell em
Have you ever hunted in Johnsontown off of mile marker 70 mile that takes you from Laurel Highlands starting at mile marker 0 there is a PowerLine that runs through that trail when your finishing up the hike coming into johnstown
I have hunted in the johnstown area before. found lots of snakes but didnt find any legal ones the time I went. Havent spent much time down that way.
Another great video guys! Good luck this fall!
Thanks! Same to you!
Makes me wonder how many snakes i walk by and never notice. Nice vid
what kind of boots you gentlemen using? great video we run into westerns out here in california
I think they are irish setter snake proof boots.
I never we had timber rattle snakes in pa learn something new everyday #Pennsylvania
That snake that got a closeup at 13:50 looked like it had SFD. Don't you guys think? Have you guys worked with that disease much? Are there other diseases you know of that cause those kinds of scarring, specifically on the face? And please don't say it's hibernation sores! Those have been proven to mostly be SFD
Where is this so I never go hiking here?!
It’s up above Pittsburgh pa I live below Pittsburgh and I have never seen a rattle snake or copperhead which is good cause I’m not a fan of snakes
Nice big one! On the northern high plains - Montana and Canada - we get prairie rattlers that big.
Man, this video was fascinating. Seeing how they react helps me overcome some of the fear I had of them. Great video!
Thanks! Yep, every snake we see is always trying to escape and hide from us. They dont want to strike unless they absolutely have to.
Are there certain species that are more aggressive such as copperheads or water moccasins, or do they pretty much all try to escape & hide?
@@Leatherwoodoutdoors Question, What do you do with the ones you keep??
So,
What do you do with these snakes that you catch...?
Eat them and preserve the hide
The more of these videos I watch, the less afraid I am of these pit vipers. I learned about the tube method in this video, that's a pretty cool way to secure them. I know I have them around here, that noise is unmistakable and riding a loud motorcycle on these twisty back roads sets them off, In some places that dround out the sound of the bike. Can't be too far off the side of the road.
so what do ya do with the ones you keep???
we can either keep them as a pet or kill them for meat and preserve the skin.
Hey John and Seth, great afternoon! TY! John did Danniel get a snake permit also?? take care and stay safe please! Rrgards, Old John
Hi John. Nope, she didnt get a snake permit. She has gone with me to see snakes a couple times but she never got a permit to hunt them.
What city in pa can you snake hunt for theses snakes?
I never lost one of those damn things so I ain't ever gonna go lookin for them.
That was awesome. I never went snake hunting but it looks like fun. Congrats on that big guy
Thanks!
They are the most docile of all rattlesnakes.
Are you guys near Morris where you got those snakes?
Nice vid. What camera do you use to film your hunts?
Thanks. In this video I am using a sony 4k handycam. Most of the other guys use sony 1080p handycams.
Thanks for the info!
What do you usually do with the tanned hide?
Wow some nice rattlers, which part of PA is this? I"m from Pittsburgh originally
This was in north central pa
Hey, where's Danielle? I guess she doesn't like snakes lol. Do you see many other guys snake hunting?
Great video guys! Keep them coming!
Thanks!
When I was in PA for Boy Scout camp a timber rattlesnake was under our tent
Those are some nice Rattlers. So your only permitted to hunt one per season?
right, just one rattlesnake and one copper head per season.
Super cool! Those hides are beautiful! You should make a video showing how to prepare the snakes for eating?
Thanks for the great videos. I really appreciate that you don't use any foul language. That says alot about your character. Its refreshing and so good to know that if my friends and are are watching your videos not having to be concerned if any of our children or grandchildren come in the room while we're watching. What size is the snake tube you like to use most?
Thanks! Yep, I try to keep it as clean as possible for the younger viewers. The tube is between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 I believe. It is a flourescent light tube guard that I bought at a local hardware store and cut it to length.
Matt Minium b
it says a lot more about his character that he killed it.
you act like theyre never gonna learn foul language...
The owl had blood on his upper wing
Opposed to his lower wing lol
If a rattlesnake has 8 rattles, can you determine the snakes age? I know the answer?
no you cannot tell the age by the number of rattles. They gain a button each time they shed their skin and could shed 2-3 times a year. Plus they loose part of their rattles often also.
Great video John! Any videos coming up about deer hunting? like scouting or any new stand spots for the upcoming season. Just a little over 2 months now!
Thanks! I might try and put up some trail cam videos on the second channel leatherwoodoutdoors2. Maybe a spotting video too but I might not have any videos up till september for deer.
Leatherwood Outdoors Sounds good would love too see if ya got any mature bucks coming too your new food plot from last year.
Here in Arkansas ole timers have told me that wherever there's honey suckle vines rattle snakes are close by. They say rats and such are attracted to the sweet smell of the vines blooming flowers and so rattlers have evolved to hunt either in the vines or close to them
It's becoming an addiction wanting to go see them lol ...
nice snake .....I seen you had a purple Martin house ...do you have any...I seen 2 today at my house I need to put up a house
Congratulations !
Great ethics and educational efforts.
I thought of you guys the other night while watching a "survival shelter" video where a guy set up camp under an overhanging rock in an out cropping like where you hunt snakes !
even around berks I’m super cautious during the summer when I’m hiking, they occasionally will give a cameo around here. haven’t seen any while hiking yet, but I did see a pretty fat ~5ft rattler while I was camping near Hawk Mountain a few years ago.
Congrats on the snake, have any of you done/thought of mounting a snake?
one of the guys a year or two ago got one mounted. its rather expensive so for now, most of us just tan the skin.
Yeah, I talked to a few taxidermists about price and I heard numbers close to 2 dollars an inch! Your way of tanning/displaying the skin is a hell of alot cheaper and a better way to show off the snake in my opinion.
ive heard of up to 10 - 15 dollars an inch.
I had no idea, all those years in PA that there were rattlesnakes there, I came upon this video because I know they exist in southern Oklahoma/northern Texas and I am trying to learn my snakes, mainly to avoid them.
What do you do with the snake skin ?
we usually eat the snakes and preserve the skin. Some make things out of them, others just keep them for display
What do you do with the snakes?
Lever Fever Probably these people eat them
Are you hunting the snakes inClarion county and how far west do they comeLOL
no we are not hunting snakes in clarion. as far west as venango county i hear.
Nice job on your bigest snake..beautifull creatures
Awww the lil owl is so cute. It looks like a lil baby owl. Poor Lil thing was probably hurt cuz how many times have u seen an owl just chilling on the road/sidewalk?. I think if it could've flew away it def would've especially when the got got close and touched it w/his foot
I’d be wearing full body armour you guys are brave!! Great video 👍🏼
How do you kill them after you decide your gonna keep it?
Daniel Fetchak A good whack over the head
Morris and Blackwell are good places to find them. You have a really good spot
Awesome video. I hunt a lot in clarion co and elk co and it's awesome to see people doing great. Keep up the good work!
Everybody thinks that you have to deep fry a snake like chicken...not ! Marinate in teriyaki sauce for 10-15min then throw on bbq grill, keep basting, omg freakn DELICIOUS !!!! Tan hide don't waste anything !!
Man that is some rugged terrain. Nice snake. Don't understand how you are not overrun with snakes since very few are killed.
The terrain is even more rough is other places. Got to be careful where you step. Thanks! Well, they disperse over a great distance from the den. A male could travel up to 5 miles away during the summer. Lots do get hit on the road and some people kill them that are found near their camps and some get killed by birds of prey, but in some places on the right day and right time of year, you could see 30-40 snakes at one spot.
Awesome Johnny love the videos keep them coming!
Thanks!
how do u know if it's really a male or female snake
21 or more subcaudle snakes under the snake means it is most likely a male
Tag out ??? What does that mean ? Do you hunt for a living ?
we have a rattlesnake license. or " Tag" Once we get our 1 rattlesnake we are allowed with a licensed we cannot hunt for them anymore till the next season.
Some really nice fat snakes.
11 rattles,,, that's pretty good.
Could be the way we were looking at it.
Thanks those were great lines.
How are you holding the snake while you wait for it to shed? I always just said well he is gunna shed soon better let him go haha
I made a cage for the snakes. I keep them in it alive until they shed which is usually a week or two.
Great job filming & explaining. More snake vids please. Cool stuff.
Thanks! Hope to have some this upcoming season!
Rich Wilcox hi Jul.
How many acres of land do u own?
where at in pa is this ..? cambria county?
That hyde at the end would make a fine pair of boots!
They look BAUCE, in SW Oklahoma we have the western diamondback and the pigmy and they have the classic look except the pigmies will get that dark phase, pretty neat.
What time do u guys start hunting?
9-10 am
In California it’s hot in the morning like 7-8 do u think it’s better to hunt in the early morning or night time?
we have never hunted at night. in CA you could probably hunt earlier since its so hot out earlier.
What a beast! We got prairie rattlers In montana. Not big but they sneak up on ya. Ocassionly catch a good eatin size snake. Bullsnakes are good eating.
Owl bleeding and wondering why someone is pushing them off the road. Yor could tell it was hurt or it would fly off or attack lol.
love your videos man. got any advice for someone just starting out on youtube?
Thanks! well, just do what you like to do and do it for fun. Dont worry about views or trying to get subs. We have been doing the same thing since day one. Just making videos for to share with others. Even if no one else watched we would still make them for memories. Tip: if you can watch your own videos over and over again without having to skip through the video then you know that others will want to watch your videos over and over again too. This is good at understanding what to cut out when editing the video. If there are spots in your own video that you get bored with or have to skip over, then cut it out.
Leatherwood Outdoors Thanks man.
That wasn’t far enough off the road for that owl, lol. Hell, that rattler is nasty!
