It seems expensive by Chinese standards, but in a city, like New York City, or Los Angeles, that would likely be something like 12 grand a month. A studio apartment in New York City is like four or five grand a month. It’s such a wonderful spacious apartment. My buddy lives in Shanghai, and has been for the last five years or so. I want to go visit him possibly next year.

She must have leased the apartment at the height of the property bubble as $4,000 now for that apartment is overpaying and she can get it now for $3,000 month. Shanghai now like Beijing is in a major recession and it is getting worse by the month. Most foreigners have left and the "French quarter" now has a lot of apartments sitting empty. More and more foreign businesses are pulling out of China permanently. Watch the videos below that you can search in RUclips that I put in quotes for the title of the videos. It will show you what is going on in the tier-1 cities in China. It isn't pretty. That is why there is an explosion on RUclips on videos of China to try and get people to visit China.
"80% Foreigners Have Left Shanghai, FDI Falls for 12th Consecutive Month"
Some Shanghai netizens discovered that the number of registered students in international schools and housing rental data show a sharp decline in the foreign population, possibly exceeding 80%. In areas where foreigners used to live, there are visibly fewer foreigners, especially Westerners from Europe and America. This phenomenon is not only seen in Shanghai but also in other major cities and economically strong second-tier cities. The main reason for this is the withdrawal of many foreign enterprises and investment companies, leading foreign managers and technicians from Europe and America to return home.
"Shanghai Landlords Desperate, Offload Homes That Can’t Sell Even With $10M Cuts"
In the wake of China's economic sluggishness and the collapse of the real estate market, luxury home prices in first-tier cities have plummeted. The once unshakeable myth of upscale properties as a safe investment has been shattered. Years of savings for homeowners have turned to dust, leaving the populace lamenting these "woeful times."
"Great Depression in Beijing and Shanghai, 10 Veteran Department Stores Close in Just Over 3 Months"
This plaza's emptiness is surprising given its location near the bustling Maoming North Road pedestrian street and opposite the famous Wangjia Sha. Hengchi Automobile's flagship showroom used to occupy this space. Some Hengchi logos are still on the walls. Hengchi, is an electric vehicle brand under the Evergrande Group. Evergrande chairman Xu Jiayin had high hopes for it. However, due to Evergrande's debt issues and delays in Hengchi's mass production, the market outlook is bleak. Questions arise as to why such a prime location remains unoccupied.
The closure of Shanghai's department stores has sparked concerns about economic decline in the Chinese metropolis. On February 5, 2024, Shanghai's classic department store, Shanghai 600, established in 1952, announced its closure. Netizens lament the changes in Shanghai's retail landscape. Shanghai 600 is closing, Pacific Department Store is already shuttered, and Plaza 66 and Oriental Department Store aren’t what they used to be. After the pandemic, many shops have noticeably ceased operations, and the nostalgic bustle of historic Xujiahui is no more.
"Foreigners Gone, Businesses Shut, Overgrown Weeds: Shanghai Currently Experiences Severe Desolation"
The decline of Shanghai can be seen in the changing consumption patterns of professionals in the city's financial sector. A Tencent News report from January 12th, which garnered significant social attention, described a popular restaurant in Shanghai's Bund Financial City with an average spend of 500 yuan per person, experiencing only one table of diners during lunchtime. This situation highlights the end of the era of high-salary in Shanghai's financial circles.
