The thing will be, that his dad was able to fix something, and that thing being a mechanical unit that intermittently compressed air and the injected hydrocarbons pumped from the ground that came from the distilled carcasses of prehistoric animals. A series of explosions used to move the vehicle forward. I will probably seem more primitive than a steam engine does to our eyes today. How many people in 70 years will be able to fix or repair anything at all. Many today cannot even.
This is part of the joy I get - seeing machines being fixed, rejuvenated and brought back into operation.

@@timcarpenter2441 Thing havent changed much over the last 100 years combustion wise, aside from hydrogen - I dont think it will change much from where we are now.
What happened to "flying cars, hoverboards, and self tying shoes?" there are a few examples....but they are concepts far out of the reach of most people. We've just refined what we had over the past century and now people focus on things that dont matter today and buy into what they are told.....
"How many people in 70 years will be able to fix or repair anything at all."
The issue with this statement wont be because of technological advances, it will all be due to the ineptitude and laziness of people. You can see that pattern today all around you, people would rather someone e else do it for them and would rather not bother to learn for themselves. Idiocracy was a prophecy. I know I sound pessimistic/cynical but its the truth.
I would put my life savings on that we will still be using the same or similar engines with either hybrid or hydrogen vehicles becoming slowly more mainstream.

When I was your Son's age, me and my Dad would take his '31 Model A to swap meets. We would have to leave around 5:00AM on Sundays to avoid traffic if we had to take a frwy. He would always find a place with pancakes ("hot cakes") and I could have all I wanted then off to the swap meet. Sometimes we would be driving for an hour and not one word. Then my Dad would look over at me and smile and I would smile back. No words. Some of the best memories this 64 year old man has. That feeze frame of you and your Son took me right back to those days. PS The truck is in my garage. My Dad Willed it to me over my 3 older family members as they never really liked it or wanted to go to swap meets that early with my Dad on Sundays. I learned to drive in the truck.

I feel ya! My Dad was a career military man. 30 years in the Army deployed all over the world. He hardly noticed that we existed (or so it seemed most of the time). Even after I joined the Army myself we had little to do with each other. Today we are both retired. I moved to Texas 23 years ago after a big blow up fight with him. He did come to Texas for my wedding 11 years ago though. A couple years ago I went to Kentucky to take him on a fishing trip, and he kinda just blew that off. Last week, I drove up again to pick up an old RV that he decided to give me about 5 years ago. Just like Derek does give her a good once over, change or top off some fluids, air up the tires and hope for the best! 1800 mile round trip with my son in law! A trip he'll never forget! Break the mold and scatter the pieces! I include my kids and my grand kids and they love to include me!

Have you thought of fibreglassing the rotten underside of these vehicles? You get structure and salt resistance in one. Or a few layers of mesh and bedliner, for a quick patch. And polycarbonate for window replacement as you can cut onsite with a saw or grinder. And stronger than the glass. And fill the rust pockets with spray foam so more mud and moisture can't get in there again. The rocker I would slide a aluminium pipe in and fibreglass it in. All dodgy but gets it done fast.

Last time I toyed with it, I couldn't find where the brakes were leaking from but I'll give it another shot when I get the time. Perhaps I'll make a video out of it. It's been sitting since 2013 and the thing really is as mint as can be, not a spot of rust, no dents at all.
Update: I replaced the rear brake hose, and the radiator. The new rad is slightly taller than the original, so I need to make a bracket for the fan shroud, then it’ll be ready to go. Really excited to drive it again.

Very Cool, I bought a new 1980 Scout II SD33T in Michigan, drove it for 10 years, then put a plow on it another 5 years and sold it with a rusted out body to car dealership. Then 10 years later I restored a 1989 Scout Tera pickup. Bought it used in Washington state and drove it back to Michigan non-stop and consumed 5 gallons of oil on the trip, never let me down!!

The smile Dad would give me when he knew I was happy to be picking apples with him, feeding the chickens or helping him cut winters wood with his tractor saw rig. Oh God so many years ago. I’m 73 now.

What a sweet and cool shot where a guy put his hand on his son's shoulder to reast his head, then he looked at him and both smiled. Almost brought tears to this guy who also is a dad! My son is about that same age. Priceless memories your making. Your a good man and father!

When I was younger I used to party, but now a guy's gotten older. A good Friday night is listening to a guy talk about car stuff. I'm 96.42% sure this is more funner.

My dad passed 15 years ago and rarely a day passes when I don't think "dad would love that" or find myself saying things he said. I used to love just spending time with him, al his little jokes and those "don't tell mum" moments!
