I’ve got to say this new series is starting off pretty good. I met Steve years ago at the Shell in Kewdale, his truck was low on air for the air starter so we hooked up an airline between his truck and mine and the big KTA19 fired up. Looks like he’s kept the air start on the new X15 by the sound of it.
@@FryingTiger My thought is air starters are more simple. These days semi truck batteries last a max of two years, especially on sleeper trucks with inverters to power the microwave, TV, kettle, etc. My W900 takes three, some trucks take four at roughly $200 each. So replacement cost is something to consider. In cold temperatures batteries perform worse, and weak batteries may not crank at 32 degrees. Strong batteries may not crank at 0 or -15. As long as you keep moisture out of the air system (keep alcohol in the truck, a good air dryer canister, drain the tanks before freezing) and keep the truck airtight, as it is required by US DOT for leak down tests, that air starter will work as long as it is mechanically sound.
The new season of Outback Truckers started last night. Steve’s old truck has a complete new engine, with a computerised management system. The old dog is learning a few new tricks. Well done Steve best of luck.

Very old video this, but after watching the latest show on TV last night, with the fitment of the new $150,000 fly by wire electronic wonder engine I am wondering just how long the electrotrickery will last before it lets Steve down and he regrets his decision for not staying old school.
I think it is from vehicles continuously traveling back and forth over it over time. It happens to dirt roads and unimproved/packed down gravel roads here in the States also. They probably do eventually fix it with a grader or roller but there are only so many road workers and machinery to dispatch and that is many thousands upon thousands miles/kilos of road to maintain. Corrugated sections of road are awful to drive on and some vehicles and tires can take it better than others.
15:46 that's a really rubbish design. It's not that difficult to run the wiring to a position up from where the box could be put on a shock mount. Right by the wheels... is just asking for trouble. No wonder it broke. Every farmer worth their salt knows that's no place to put electronics - guess whomever made those trailers didn't get the memo, or they did it on purpose.
Nope, that's just truckin' in the bush. There is always something, rarely predictable, but always have some drama or challenge happening. lt's how a person deals with it that counts. Can take it all in your stride like Steve or spit the dummy, carry on like a loon & wreck gear or load like turbo.

Why not air and battery?
@@FryingTiger the simple reason: because there’s only room for one starter motor on a flywheel housing.
