Exactly, ask yourself how much a 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia/16M, 458 Speciale/Aperta go for? As far as American cars go, the 05-06 Ford GT has probably held its value the best.
@@nzzx1 maybe the challenge stradale's are 240k but they also costed $55k more than the GT (GT costed $140k, the 360 CS costed $195k) the basic Ferrari 360 which costed $145k is now worth between $60k and $90k. I think these 3 guys have grudgingly (or at least Jeremy) come to accept over the years that American cars have both gotten far better than the ones of yesteryear, and that they have their place in the world of cars.
In the 60 Ford Won Le Mans 4 times with 3 different cars. 66 MK-II, 67 MK-IV (100% US Made) and 69 and 70 MK-I (same Gulf car serial number 1075). The 1967 victory was with US Drivers on a US design and built car. Ford GT MK-IV was outlawed by the French.
The MkI, MkII and MKIII were British made. The MK IV was indeed American made, but under the guidance of Roy Lunn (British engineer), so not entirely US design. The 1966 and 67 victories were US teams (Shelby America). The 1968 and '69 victories were UK teams.(J.W. Automotive Engineering)

Here in the states, taking up 2 parking spaces is an invitation that says, "please damage my car, because i am a prick that thinks because he has a nice car, needs two parking spaces." LOL.
ZL1Gimpelson Haha, that's true in most cases, sadly. In my case, my car is so small, I can fit in a single parking space, even if there are two giant trucks overlapping the lines on both sides. So my car is less likely to get hit by another car's door.
Look at the value of these cars now... what a wonderful machine. How Ford did this in the mid 2000's is beyond me, but my god if I had one I would cherish it.
MexicanRmz 112,000 cost, say you earn 50 grand a year, respectable in central london. say you got the car on finance after putting 20 grand as a down payment.jeremy lived 80 miles away, 1 quid per mile, there about. 160 quid a day 1120 a week, 56000 a year, yeh fuel is gonna be a problem.
4mpg and 75 miles distance if you drive with your foot to the floor consistently. They literally did an episode with a gas challenge, a BMW vs a Prius and the BMW won. And Jeremy said, and I quote- "It's not about what your drive. Its how you drive it. That is everything."
Why does Jeremy keep saying American cars are rubbish when he clearly said that the Corvette and the F40 (both of which are American) are two of his favourite cars? He said in the review that the F40 is a "sensation" and when he was driving the Corvette on some long twisty road in the US he said it was "absolutely astonishing". Puzzling....
Also about that corvette on the long twisty road, he drove it later on in Britain and said driving it in America must of been a love affair and described it as "Ghastly."
Jeremy has in fact, fallen for the Ford effect. It's something many ford lovers like me go through, and it varies as other brands do have it. It just seems to be very prominent to fords. The effect is basically no matter how bad it drives, no matter how shitty the gas mileage is, and no matter how much you break down. You just love the ford. The sound. The feel. Everything about it, it just consumes you like no other vehicle can. My 2011 mustang has done this to 2 Camaro lovers now.
I have an 06 blue (like Jeremy's). The design is ageless and the car is extreme fun to drive without ever taking it to the limit like they do on the track. It's biggest benefit is that it draws women from 18 to 50+ like moths to the flame. I'm almost 52 and I wish I'd had it 30 years earlier when I could have handled more of them . As it is, I can afford to be very fussy. Nothing like one for that mid-life crisis.
Well i have also LOVED the ford gt series since '68. When i was 5 i promised myself i was getting a ford gt '05,ford gt40, or maybe even the '68 gt40 but that depends. Im gonna be 6ft 8 at the time i would be getting my first car so im continplating on it but still great car by far
You really think he's gonna do anything near 160MPH going to work?? Yes, you're gonna be run it hard in select roads on the way to work, split the numbers, say not 12 or Four.....say Seven, that's 117 miles........there is no way on Earth he is going to be able to get just Four to the gallon on the street.
Actually, on roads built for something a bit wider than a Roman Chariot, It is a wonderful car to drive daily. I drive mine as often as the mood strikes me here in the states. With it's wide stance it would be a challenge on many of Europe's very old, very narrow. very congested roads and city streets. But then. a lot of other super cars don't fit well on many of London's tiny little streets.
So the GT's engine is from a pickup, then since Ford pickups now use their Ecoboost engines, which are turbo V6s, then imagine those in the next Ford GTs. This one has horrible mileage because of that supercharger. Turbos systems are more expensive, and more complicated, but they're more powerful and, much more efficient. Ford, and other manufacturers realize this, big engines are disappearing, except for certain exceptions, like Lamborghini.
I still prefer supercharged over turbo. Yes the parasitic load from a supercharger is quite a bare and the fuel consumption is more because of that, where as turbocharged is off the exhaust gases, I still think Ford will use the twin screw supercharger in the next rendition of the GT. Besides they kind of have to to compete against the Dodge Hellcat that just came out.
Ratkill9000 It is not outside the realm of possibility that they break tradition and use a beefed up twin (or more) turbo V6. It is currently their best truck engine and I would personally love to see this beat a V10 or 12 at its own game.
Really? They are using fuel consumption to bash this car? When the Aventador barely gets any better? Oh wait, I forget they hate American cars, even the one they love.
well first of all dont compare a half a million dollar aventador to a ford gt. second of all the aventador has 4 times better fuel economy (16.4 mpg) third of all they dont hate american cars, james just makes fun of everything unless its a fiat panda, richard owns a mustang and bought a challenger, jeremy bought gt twice cause 1st one broke down. and lastly they make fun of every car and make fun of each other, thats why its automotive/entartainment show. so yeah if you dont watch the show, shut up with criticism
Ford GT has 12 MPG. Aventador has 16.4. However when you are gunning it around the track like they do then the fuel economy goes down for both. It just seems like they hate on US cars more. I think its because they get pissy when American auto companies can design a car that can do anything a super car can do for a fraction of the cost.
gtaclevelandcity I agree with that. I think if you compared the GT40 with something like a Ferrari F-40-something about as fast-I think the Ferrari MIGHT get slightly better fuel economy overall-it would still suck if you dogged it all the time. On the down side-if you had to rebuild a Ferrari engine--5valves per cylinder, DOHC--I say it would be about 3 times more expensive to rebuild. And with all the extra moving parts-I'm sure that 2 would happen more often than the FORD engine. I don't really know what would be cheaper in the long run exactly-but my instincts tells me the Ford probably would
I am the General Manager of an automotive repair facility. We deal with mpg's all the time. 4 mpg is not that bad under the circumstances in which this car was being driven. I don't care what you drive, if you are hammering on it, like the GT was hammered on, they all will get poor gas mileage. And keep something else in mind, this is nothing more than a street legal race car. It was not designed as a daily commuter. Even though the car is perfectly capable of daily commutes. And if driven in a moderate way, it probably will get 12-15 mpg. Which is great considering the car/engine/performance.
"blah blah fuel economy???" Cry about fuel economy in a Ford GT? really? Then cry about practicality in a super car? Sorry, I just don't like how easy it is to nitpick these reviews.
Great joke, but they kept throwing out that 4 number as if it were accurate. I hope nobody here believes that. Sure, 4mpg ripping up the track non-stop I can see that. But on the road, it's rated for 13 in the city and 21 on the highway. Just sayin.
jordan collins No its classified as a supercar, which aren't muscle cars. If anything more people consider the Viper a muscle car; I don't know why, seeing as that's a sports car.
MSRP is something like $120,000 but when Ford opened it up for pre-orders in 2004 for the 2005 Ford GT, some went for close to $500,000 because they basically had to bid due to high demand. Also, i saw one go for that much at a Barret Jackson auction. so yes, i meant to put 500,000
It's because of the crazy price of fuel here. I just looked on net and worked it out, cheapest price for US gallon in NYC was $3.59, for us to buy the identical quantity ( 3.785 litres ) works out at around £5.22 or $8.40. Unless we're reasonably well off, we'd struggle to run 12MPG cars on a regular basis. Superb car by the way! :)
True. Let me nuance it a little, it was a British engineered car. It's true that without the money and the will none of it would have been possible. It's also true that Ford was/is no different in that respect than others, let's not forget that all the major F1 teams have their shops and R&D centers in UK (exception of course, being Ferrari, who preferred to have Brown moved to Italy and when he left, it showed). There's also the reverse, the Rover V8 engine is of US origin, Buick to be precise
I have a small collection of diecast cars and the theme is tv and movie cars, so if I get this in a model, can I use it's appearance here on Top Gear to call it a tv car? I'd be sort of invoking the six degrees of Kevin Bacon principle.
What most people seem to also forget about is most roads in America are long straights with long gradual bends. Prime territory for brute force and very little need for tight handling.
I kind of miss this kind of car reviews... I enjoy the bonkers Top Gear of today but... I don't know. This is the TG we've come to love for a long time.

BillyBob Keith OH YEAH, I HEARD THAT. Man that looks like its better than a 458 or f 12
Here in the states, taking up 2 parking spaces is an invitation that says, "please damage my car, because i am a prick that thinks because he has a nice car, needs two parking spaces." LOL.
ZL1Gimpelson
Haha, that's true in most cases, sadly.
In my case, my car is so small, I can fit in a single parking space, even if there are two giant trucks overlapping the lines on both sides. So my car is less likely to get hit by another car's door.
I love Top Gear when I can't hear it.
Yeah man, I hate it when I could hear everything.
Jezza continuing to try and climb into the GT while Hammond and May continue talking had me in absolute stitches
Look at the value of these cars now... what a wonderful machine. How Ford did this in the mid 2000's is beyond me, but my god if I had one I would cherish it.
I you can afford a Car like this I dont think you'll have problems with Gas ....
It is if you run out before you can get anywhere
MexicanRmz 112,000 cost, say you earn 50 grand a year, respectable in central london. say you got the car on finance after putting 20 grand as a down payment.jeremy lived 80 miles away, 1 quid per mile, there about. 160 quid a day 1120 a week, 56000 a year, yeh fuel is gonna be a problem.
becton98 4 mpg on a race track. hardly fair.
*****
fine even if 50,000 was your disposable income, fuel is till gonna be a problem
+ MexicanRmz
If you're Russian, *of course not!* ;)
As an American, I really wish I saw American car companies produce more super cars.
Are the audio levels messed up for anyone else?
the ford gt is my favorite supercar for a reason :)
Gt40 is by far my favorite car of all time because of the LeMans race.(1st 2nd and 3rd were gt40s).
OH MY GOD! the first American car Jeremy didn't rant about and liked!. but then again, if i was able to drive one, im sure i wouldn't either.
4mpg and 75 miles distance if you drive with your foot to the floor consistently.
They literally did an episode with a gas challenge, a BMW vs a Prius and the BMW won. And Jeremy said, and I quote- "It's not about what your drive. Its how you drive it. That is everything."
lets work on the music to voice volume ratio
Why does Jeremy keep saying American cars are rubbish when he clearly said that the Corvette and the F40 (both of which are American) are two of his favourite cars? He said in the review that the F40 is a "sensation" and when he was driving the Corvette on some long twisty road in the US he said it was "absolutely astonishing". Puzzling....
Since When Was An F40 American? Lol....It's Italian, And Yes American Cars Are Shit
BackflipMotorSports ehem. Its a Ford and Ford is an AMERICAN car!!!! Ford isn't Italian mate...
Banana Torpedo Ford doesn't make a car called the f40, is it the GT you're talking about?
F40 Is Made By Ferrari. You Got It Confused With The Gt40. Both Are Beautiful Cars. Ford Gt Is Modern Art!
My 2011 mustang has done this to 2 Camaro lovers now.
lmao i drove a ford ka once and it was rubbish.
"This is like a cocktail that tastes like orange juice but blows your head off after two sips." I love that line.
2021 and this is still the most beautiful car ever designed.
The first time I saw this on television, being from the states I remember being extremely prideful about Jeremy loving a Ford.
Im really surprised, because i thought it would get more MPG!!!! Not 4!!!! I always thought it would get about 20 or 25!!!!
The Ford GT 40 was inarguably a dream car. I think every kid in the early 70s who owned a Carrera race-track wanted to own a model of the GT 40...
It would probably do better if built today, I can imagine Ford being able to build one today that could triple that mpg under hard running.
Haha I laughed so hard at this
You really think he's gonna do anything near 160MPH going to work?? Yes, you're gonna be run it hard in select roads on the way to work, split the numbers, say not 12 or Four.....say Seven, that's 117 miles........there is no way on Earth he is going to be able to get just Four to the gallon on the street.
No one thinks that, not even Top Gear. Its a entertainment show and you shouldn't take it to serious, its not meant to be a serious show.
They are very stupid
is it me or in most of the Top Gear videos the music is too loud.
petiyo101 scroll up - problem was discussed thoroughly. It's in the transfer to RUclips.
Most Ferraris get less than 2 mpg when driving them hard on the track.
Actually, on roads built for something a bit wider than a Roman Chariot, It is a wonderful car to drive daily. I drive mine as often as the mood strikes me here in the states. With it's wide stance it would be a challenge on many of Europe's very old, very narrow. very congested roads and city streets. But then. a lot of other super cars don't fit well on many of London's tiny little streets.
whats funny is that despite its connering being bad the original and the new one both did what they were supposed to do which is beat ferrari
What song is the stig listening to?
Danube - Sandstorm
Umm... audio??? The voices are drowned out.
I just love these three guys regardless of all shortcomings
The background music isn’t loud enough.
"American cars are rubbish, all of them" Jeremy Clarkson.
Besides they kind of have to to compete against the Dodge Hellcat that just came out.
if they twin charge the GT they wont have to worry cause they be pulling an extra 500 hp on top the twin screw if they use twin turbos aswell
Only thing that I can think of that comes stock from the factory with a twin charge setup is Audi/VW TSI which uses a turbo and supercharger.
Ratkill9000 It is not outside the realm of possibility that they break tradition and use a beefed up twin (or more) turbo V6. It is currently their best truck engine and I would personally love to see this beat a V10 or 12 at its own game.
EcoBoost is too quiet in my book. Nothing sounds better than a supercharged V8. The growl would be gone with the turbos.
James and Richard don't get it...
Hammond looks like a high school kid in this. Jeez.
Look at all that frosted tip hair in the audience. How very early 2000s.
The first thing I buy after hitting the lottery!!
putting your foot to the floor will eat gas in any car.
I think its because they get pissy when American auto companies can design a car that can do anything a super car can do for a fraction of the cost.
gtaclevelandcity He hated it so much he bought one.
gtaclevelandcity
I agree with that. I think if you compared the GT40 with something like a
Ferrari F-40-something about as fast-I think the Ferrari MIGHT get slightly
better fuel economy overall-it would still suck if you dogged it all the time.
On the down side-if you had to rebuild a Ferrari engine--5valves per cylinder,
DOHC--I say it would be about 3 times more expensive to rebuild. And with all the extra moving parts-I'm sure that 2 would happen more often than
the FORD engine. I don't really know what would be cheaper in the long
run exactly-but my instincts tells me the Ford probably would
Correction, Pube head hates Americans in general as it seems.
Some say he lost the majority of his hearing in a tennis accident. All we know, is that he's called the sound editor.
"blah blah fuel economy???"
Cry about fuel economy in a Ford GT? really?
Then cry about practicality in a super car?
Sorry, I just don't like how easy it is to nitpick these reviews.
It's a joke..... Top Gear is about entertainment. Jeremy was planning to use this as a daily driver and then those things are a big concern!!!
Theres supercar fuel economy, and then there's Ford GT fuel economy. Thats why they pointed it out. 75 miles on a full tank...
Great joke, but they kept throwing out that 4 number as if it were accurate. I hope nobody here believes that. Sure, 4mpg ripping up the track non-stop I can see that. But on the road, it's rated for 13 in the city and 21 on the highway. Just sayin.
That would be 4 UK mpg, cant remember if that's more or less than US mpg
MontyPython12 MPG is MIles per Gallon......
yes
American Muscle!!
It isn't a muscle car.
Markel Brown
It is to Jeremy.
Markel Brown it is actually classed as the the big brother of the mustangs and actually a muscle car
jordan collins No its classified as a supercar, which aren't muscle cars. If anything more people consider the Viper a muscle car; I don't know why, seeing as that's a sports car.
Markel Brown
The Shelby GT500 also is a supercar as well.
Such a beautiful car, I would love to own one to drive in the weekends
sound guy your drunk go home.
can barely hear him when music is on.
WAIT JUST CAUSE ITS AMERICAN WHAT ARE TRYING TO SAY!?
its comical how bad the sound is
Thanks for that. The SCC Tuatara looks spectacular.
Hard time getting in? That’s Compromise for passion not 2million $ for Ferrari, 2 mil or hard time getting in….
this soundeditor is really bad.
4mpg = still cheaper than the train...
The FORD GT is amazing BTW like if u are watching in 2016
i disliked it
Whoever mixed the music and voice is fired.
So no one knows who the artist or song name is the stig is listening to at 5:10..??
Thanks, I am indeed another American that had no idea what he was saying. I'm glad we have some nice translators.
Amen
we need more cars like the GT40
I have a small collection of diecast cars and the theme is tv and movie cars, so if I get this in a model, can I use it's appearance here on Top Gear to call it a tv car? I'd be sort of invoking the six degrees of Kevin Bacon principle.
It's still a beautiful car......love to have one.
Probably the most beautiful car that went round the old TG track.
I got to see one of these in my town when I was in senior year high school, it was the show room car at the dealership
What is the name of the song at 0:25 that is to loud?
Some say he was born deaf, and that he has no understanding of the concept of sound...
*All we know is, he’s not the Stig, but he is the sound editor!*
Jeremy Clarkson's favourite car ever!!
some say that he's deaf, others say he's never touched a soundmix board, while some say that he is at work only one day a year. all we know is that he's the Top Gear sound editor!
To bad this car became illegal to Continue production, It truly was a master piece.
