Never again will I toss my selvages! Love love this tutorial 👍
We're happy you enjoy this fun project! We love creating with our scraps! 💖 -Michelle
As a dress maker this would be an awesome way to remember dresses, pants, and shirts I’ve made for my kids. Clothes wear out but this would last almost forever. That’s why I got into quilting.
Yes! That's a great idea! -Michelle
Love This Quilt! I love the idea of seeing the salvages taking your mind down memory lane of past projects a person has done. Thank you for this awesome video!
We're happy it has inspired you. Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
I've seen the kite block done differently, but not like this! I got so tickled at how excited Jen got throughout the whole process 🥰
Great job both of you!
We're happy you enjoyed this process! Thank you very much for watching! -Michelle
BETHANY, YOU ARE A GENIUS. THANK YOU FOR THIS.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Jeni! We agree that she is absolutely amazing! -Madison
I just made 13 lap blankets for Christmas. I'm going to start making one of these for myself!
That sounds like a very wonderful plan!! 💖 -Michelle
Mind expanding project!
Watching the two of you sharing the thrill of creating was joyful.
We are very happy tp hear that this project has inspired you! Thank you very much for watching!! -Michelle
I love this method of string piecing. I’m thinking string Christmas trees 😍
That's a fun idea!! -Michelle
This is awesome! “No selvage left behind”. Love it! My grandkids would LOVE helping me do this.the possibilities are endless with this. You could use really pretty thread and different stitches. So fun! I’m as excited as Jenn is.
Yes, this is such a fun project! We're happy it inspires you. Thanks for your comment! -Michelle
Had to laugh at “No selvage left behind”. 🤣🤣
I love that spider web pattern!! Very nice!! ❤️❤️
We're happy you enjoy this fun design, Felicia! Thanks so much for watching. -Michelle
Only 1 word describes this quilt “FANTABULOUS” ❤🎉😮
We're happy you enjoy it!! Thanks for commenting!! -Michelle
Best video yet. You two had so much fun as though you were testing the waters. I too save my selvages..don't have enough. I could see umbrellas, Christmas Trees, BDay cake, etc. The ruler is cool w/secondary markings. This was so great & fun to watch.
We're glad this project has inspired you! Thanks so much for commenting! -Michelle
I’ve taught children to sew, both hand sewing and machine sewing. A machine with a 50% speed function is really helpful for children learning to use a sewing machine, as it reduces anxiety that the machine will get away
This is FANTASTIC. I’m so impressed with this project. It’s PERFECT to teach children to sew straight lines without having to juggle two bits of floppy fabric to sew straight seams.
I’m convinced it’s a great first machine sewn quilt for kids to make.
There’s lots of low stress learning fun to this project: it encourages creativity and supports decision making in choosing fabric and colour arrangement. It’s an activity that further facilitates fine motor skill development. Kids too young to use a rotary cutter can trim with scissors because there’s a cut guide. I think it’s a good project to introduce kids to safely using a hot iron (I would have them press each wedge at the end, rather than press each strip).
This project will support children piecing units because the extra density means the fabric being seamed isn’t so floppy and unmanageable.
At the end the child has a quilt that they have made themselves or that they have largely contributed to
It would be a fun cooperative project for siblings by dividing the steps according to age and skill ability, and importantly in terms of learning, their capacity.
Finally, as it’s made from scrap waste there is less stress about ruining good fabric
I love it. Thank you.
We are very happy to hear that this project has inspired you and that you've been inspiring future generations as well! Thank you very much for your warm comment. -Michelle
Bethany.... Bravo!!! I had a flash of using this ruler to create a quilt of umbrellas... with the wedges of back ground to represent the sun or rain ...
🏖 ☀️☔️ 🌧
That's a fun suggestion! -Michelle

Loved this!! So creative. I started saving my salvages a while ago.. will have to save a lot more. Love watching you two together on videos!!
We're glad you enjoyed this delightful quilt! Thank you very much for watching!! -Michelle
I have been trying to cut my selvages off at a minimum of 1in for a few years. I have long strips, and even short ones. The short ones I have been sewing together as my leader/enders and then into long strips to add together for a later project. Thanks for the great selvage spiderweb quilt idea! 🥰
We're happy you enjoyed this project! Thanks for watching! -Michelle
This is soo cute. Just love it. Thanks for the great tutorial.
We're glad you like it! -Michelle
I love this, thankyou Jen and Bethany. Hugs, Chel🌸

Don’t know if this is allowed, but the selvages on Lori holt fabric, is adorable. I just noticed awhile back and now I make sure to save it. Love this idea.
Yes, her fabrics are bee-utiful!! We're happy you enjoy this project. -Michelle
Wow, I never knew that there is a special ruler for the spider web block, I sewed it on paper with Christmas fabric scraps and I loved it. The quilt turned out very nice. But I love the idea with the salvages. Really great video and it sounds that you had so much
fun creating the block.

What a beautiful and fun effect! This is a great way to use up selvedges and use simple stitching, too! I just gave away some cute figural selvedges this morning- I will now start hoarding them instead of throwing or giving them away😆

I love this block. And it could also be done with just scraps of fabric
Most definitely :) We're glad this project inspires you! Thank you very much for watching. -Michelle
This is brilliant! I’m definitely going to make this! And I love LOVE no seams to match, since I’m fighting a top right now that has too many seams to match that aren’t matching😂😂. I finally decided to stop stressing and just sew. Otherwise I’ll get frustrated, put it away and not finish it.
We're glad this fun project has inspired you! Thanks so much for watching!! -Michelle
You guys rock!
We're happy you enjoyed this tutorial! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle

This looks so fun! I can’t wait to make this 😄. Thank you for another great project idea!! 💛🌻💛
You could do a crumb piecing with this, too! How fun!! 💛
Great idea! We're glad you're enjoying this project! -Michelle
This would be a nice backing . Have a lot of selvages and the web design
Great suggestion! Thank you for watching. -Michelle
I love it!! What a really cool way to use the salvages!! I have been saving for the perfect project and I believe I have found it!! ❤️ what was the black grunge you used?❤️
We're happy this project inspires you! I believe the basic black grunge we used was www.shabbyfabrics.com/p63048/grunge-basics-30150-438-metropolis-iron-by-basicgrey-for-moda-fabrics . Thanks for watching! -Michelle
Love the quilt, don’t think I will live long enough to acquire enough selvages to make a quilt. I need one of those scrap pack…..
Hi Mickey! You can get scrap packs here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p111662/shabby-fabrics-scrap-pack-1-lb -Michelle
And now I'm wishing I hadn't been so frugal with my fabrics in cutting so close to the selvage and throwing them all away! For 40 years:( Bethany, maybe you could sell me some of yours:)
Thank you so much for watching! Hopefully you will be able to find some extra selvages... this project is too cute to pass up! -Madison
Fun technique! I think the selvedge wedges would be much thicker and stiffer due to the interfacing and overlapping. The solid wedges are much thinner and the bias edges would get wonky because they aren't stabilized?
I thought that would be a problem, but I sprayed all of my background kite fabric with sizing prior to sewing it and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had no warping on my edges. hope this helps you! -Bethany.
I made these in the 70's using muslim as the backing, but i didnt use the salvages. I used fabric. Im intrigued by the use of salvages❤
Happy that this tutorial has helped you! We appreciate your support and comment! ❤️ - Abby
Yes that is the ruler for the Crazy Christmas tree pattern. :)
Yes! We just love how versatile this ruler can be! -Michelle
Just wondering if the iron you're using is an Oliso? I have one and I didn't know you could sit it upright. Great project, now I know who do with the selvages I've been saving.
We're happy you enjoyed this project! This iron is the Oliso Iron TG1600 Pro Plus. Thanks for commenting! -Michelle
Great salvage quilt. Was looking for the ruler. The one I see doesn’t have the diagonal lines like the one you showed on the video. Could you please let me know where I can get it
Thank you 😊
You can find the Creative Grids Spider Web ruler here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p81100/creative-grids-spider-web-quilt-ruler-cgrka6 Thanks for watching! -Michelle
I love this tutorial. Am trying it now. What happens when it is washed?
As long as each selvedge is sewn to the interfacing template, and the quilt is adequately quilted, the only thing that should happen to the quilt when it is washed is that it gets a little wrinklier, softer, and cleaner. Thank you for watching! -Bethany
Love it!! Question - what color thread did you use for topstitching? not all my selvedges are the same color white - maybe invisible thread?
Glad you like it! We used a neutral thread for topstitching. If you like, you could use a contrasting one so your design will show! -Michelle
I love this idea. I've been saving salvages for a different project, but this gives me another option. I do have a question. What's the difference between the spider web ruler and a regular 45-degree ruler. Thank you. Love your videos and your store.
Regular 45degree rulers typically don't contain the lines needed to cut the kite shapes, only the triangle wedges. -Bethany
@@ShabbyFabrics Thank you

Yes! Great suggestion! -Michelle
How much black fabric did you use, and what size quilt is this? How many salvage circles?
Hi Barb! Our measurements are available on the Free Download here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/529/how-to-make-a-selvage-spider-web-quilt -Michelle
I have 7 years worth of selvages! I have been looking for a quilt pattern to use them with. Is there a link to buy the ruler?
It sounds like you've found the right quilt! You can find the Spider Web ruler here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p81100 -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics Thanks sew much! 😃
Can you tell me the name of your creative grid triangle? I can seemed to find it on the web.
Hi Cindy - That is the Creative Grids Spider Web tool, and you can find it here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p81100/creative-grids-spider-web-quilt-ruler-cgrka6 -Michelle
Looks like an umbrella open.
Yes, it's pretty neat! -Michelle
Maybe Shabby Fab could sell selvage packs?
That's a fun idea! -Michelle
Great selvedge project but the ruler you specify is not the ruler that was used. The ruler that was used was Creative Grids CGRKA6 which has the 90 degree markings for the kite shape. The ruler you have listed does not have this feature.
Hi Winifred - Yes, this Creative Grids tool that we used and specified in the description is the Creative Grids Spider Web Quilt Ruler - #CGRKA6. www.shabbyfabrics.com/p81100/creative-grids-spider-web-quilt-ruler-cgrka6 Hope this makes sense! -Michelle
I wonder if it would bother anyone that the words are upside down...but I suppose they are in all positions on the lay out.
What is the name of Ruler to make the Black Kites Shapes?
I love this video.
It's the Creative Grids Spider Web Quilt Ruler: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p81100/creative-grids-spider-web-quilt-ruler-cgrka6 Thank you for watching! -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics not this ruler, the one she used to cut the black fabric with.
Hi Terry, I used the same Sider Web ruler for both cuts. -Bethany
This might be very helpful when a quilter ask if anyone knows what fabric this is & no one remembers. You an go & try to find it as the salvage has that information. I didn’t read the comments so hopefully my comment isn’t what others have said.
Hi Linda! One of the main ideas behind the Selvage Spider Web Quilt is to commemorate past projects. We agree that it is the perfect quilt for remembering fabrics you have used and quilts you have made in the past. Thank you so much for your comment! -Madison
Your website has a different Spider web ruler without the kite pattern on it!
Hi Sara - The is the link for the only Spider Web Quilt Ruler by Creative Grids that we have on our website: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p81100/creative-grids-spider-web-quilt-ruler-cgrka6 You may not be able to see the white lines on the tool unless you zoom in, but I can assure you that it is the same exact ruler that we used for this project. Hope this makes sense! - Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics Okay..thanks!
🌺🌹🌸👍💕😍👌❤️
Thank you!! -Michelle
If every other wedge were cut from the background fabric the selvedge wedges would look like Christmas trees.
That's a great idea!! Thank you for commenting! -Michelle
