Norwegian often have a closer relationship with the parents since it's not too much expectations due to money.

As Norwegian parents of four, we have of course also shown an interest in our children's career choices, and we have had discussions about which path they should choose. The difference is that our children themselves are free to choose whether they want to listen to the advice we as parents give. It helps them enter their studies with a different motivation because it is ultimately their own choice. Our children quickly became independent, and have never come to us to ask for money. On the other hand, we help them financially if we understand that they are struggling, but that is something else. They will fend for themselves.

How does it feel to have won the lottery of life being born there? I can't afford education, my workplace is like a prison, my health is shit and I can't afford to fix it, my mental health is in the gutter and alcohol and cigarettes are my bandaid, my only option to get out of poverty is doing something that is legal in my state, but not legal federally, and I could potentially get 20 years in prison minimum for what is ultimately a plant. Not to mention we're surrounded by gun violence, hate, and animosity for each other.

I was already fed up with school from day one at first grade elementary in 1984, but I had good grades.
It was not the education itself that put me off, but it was the constant bullying from the other students.
I am an introvert, and wore glasses. I was studying hard, and came out decent enough.
After nine years of this mandatory bullcrap, it was enough school. I started working at the bus service station at the age of 16.
Those old co-workers there were a nightmare to be around, but I brushed them off. I've been bullied before.
I don't take sh*t from no one anymore. Get lost. I am a free man now.

Let's put it like this. I've talked to quite a few Americans who tell me that free school and health care (and a otherwise great welfare) is too expensive for the US - given the population. We say: You can't afford NOT to! The consequences of not having these rights causes quite a few situations that cost a LOT more; Crime, long period sick leaves, suicides, not contributing to taxes, straining the hospitals, homelessness, drugs, mental illness, long period support of general support - and if adding a rather sluppy gun controll; School shootings.

It has other consequences too. Like we learned from The Good Nurse-story where commercial hospitals knew that one of their nurses were killing patients, but they couldn't afford to let that become known, so they just fired him and passed him onto another hospital. Similar things with corruption in the police. The biggest driver of cost of healthcare in the US is the need for insurance. It's extremely expensive. An American doctor might pay more in insurance than a Scandinavian doctor makes in a year. That has to be paid by the customers. And then a hospital that hires a doctor needs insurance for that and so on. It adds up.

Scandinavian countries seems to have an much better prison model than US, for example Norway has a recidivism rate of 20% while the United States has a rate of 76.6%, The American system focuses on punishing the prisoners. Norway, on the other hand, focuses on rehabilitating their prisoners, on other hand the America is one of the most populated country in the world so things will be a lot different anyway but if you treat humans like animals in prison they will become animals when they get out and back to society of course a lot of factors affect the recidivism rate

Norwegian here. There's ups and downs with both models. In USA there's a lot more options (like more private education and healthcare) which gives a lot more diversity of thought, more research free from ideological constraints, in addition to more free choices for the students/people. Government in Norway basically decide what research gets funding, and so what the government finds politically "good" will get funding, and what the government finds politically "bad" won't get much (or none at all). Regarding the quality of government healthcare it has been good in the past, but problems have definitely surfaced during the last 20 years or so. There's a bit of a crisis regarding overworked doctors and nurses, resulting in many quitting their jobs, and so goverment healthcare-institutions lack the personnel they need, which in turn results in poorer healthcare-quality, and waiting-in-line for the patients for maybe 3-6 months before you get the life-saving operation you desperately need, or the life-saving medicine you need (due to the financial cost). That's just some of what this bragging video by Harald Eia don't mention. I think the saying seems to be true after all; There just is no "freedom machine". Nothing is really just free. Either you (or your parents) fund it yourself, or the government does, but then again; who funds the government? And who then are pulling all the strings? I think the kind of argument Harald Eia presents just as easily can be flipped, to say something like; Who gets to be the boss deciding your choices and options? Will it be you (or your parents until you're old enough) or the government? If it is the government, then do you get more or less free? More or less independent? Have you just substituted your parents with the government? Maybe the government won't be demanding the same way your parents might be, but your parents love and care about you, and the government doesn't really (you're just another brick in the wall for them), and they get to constrain what you learn, research and, in the end, what your job will look like.

Free education lift the buttom, when just about everyone got an education, it create better understanding of the society.
Which in return gives less crime, better understanding of food and health, higher understanding and interest in common/current science and psychology 👍
Another fun fact. This independence and free education also create a wider knowledge of how working struckture function, as in the US there are about 17 steps of learning and understanding of the steps from the buttom to the top in a corporation, where as in the scandinavien countries are just 3

In Norway there's the same kind of polarisation as in the US. One part of the population wants the government involved in everything - and these guys "want your kids". The other part wants to shrink government into an atom. And the trajectory is that the disagreement will only grow. North/South Korea is a good solution and should be available in every country it seems.

Nowdays, the world is getting getting more totalitarian, and that is also true in Norway. This is eroding trust among the population. @@jeschinstad Actually I know very well. If you have tried starting a party in Norway, you'd know that the police aren't particularly happy about that. Especially if you're against their most important projects, like population replacement. Also, it is a country that practises "Arbeids Verbot", just look at Fjordman. It is a country where the in-group rules large business and have close ties to government. It is a country where the military is politicized with LGPT policies. I could go on, but I suspect that you're fully woven into this thinking, which proves my point. Norwegians don't see it, because it's in their blood. It's only when you oppose the system that you really see it.

Actually - one of the hallmarks of totalitarianism is that it is total. You have you be outside the "totality" in order to see it. Many in the USSR honestly believed it was the greatest direct democracy the world had ever seen.

Hence the absence of Norwegian universities in the Global Top 10, Top 20...
Tyler is such a panderer. If the situation were reversed, his spin would be: "How nice that Norwegian parents check in with their college age kids; American parents are not interested in their kids."

      - Tell me this, o holy keeper of all knowledge...
How many 'Universities' are there in the USA?
How many 'University Colleges' are there in the USA?
How many 'Scientific Colleges' are there in the USA?
How many of these are state owned and how many of these are privately owned?
This total very much factors in when listing 'Top-3', 'Top-5', 'Top-10', 'Top-20', etc..., etc...
      -
The population of a country and the popularity of these higher educational institutions among national and international teenagers and (young) adults also play a very big part in how well certain higher educational institutions do on these lists.

I think Carlin said it best... (NB!...: Paraphrased, of course!)
"The more students who are able to pass, the better the school's reputation will be."
In the case of good quality education, I would have thought that the opposite was more likely to be true, but alas...

hehe, that's a strange conclusion. If it was true that lower funding automatically creates a better university and that people don't matter at all, then shouldn't the best university be totally free?

Once again Harald Eia over simplifies things. He is definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The parents in Norway still expects reports, and they visit if they can. Many of them stil tries to steer their children towards specific eductations. The difference is, that the final choise is their childrends. And when the choice is made, the parents are expected to support their childrens decision. If it turns out to be wrong, they step in and helps their children as well as they can, until the children are back on their feet again. There is no stupid threats of no inheritance etc. to try to force the children to become what the parents want. They are allowed to make their own mistakes. To learn from life itself.
