As an American I don't know any Norwegian shows or movies. Today I am very excited to check out some Norwegian shows for the very first time. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

What i love about the norsemen is that they actually recorded the show in both norwegian and english, so the english version isnt just a dubbed audio track, they recorded all the scenes twice, once in norwegian and once in english

@@theaxycorn Haha akkuratt det jeg gjorde også (bare de første episodene da). jeg ble anbefalt serien og så de to første episodene på engelsk og trodde at den overdrivne norsk-engelsken var en del av humoren, så gjorde jeg litt research og fant at den var laget i begge språkene så så jeg resten på norsk.
The Norwegian accent when they speak English is intentional to make it more funny, obviously. Most of the actors speak way better than this in real life. They did every take in Norwegian and English back to back, which I have never heard been done before. I recommend watching some interviews on RUclips with the actors and directors as well. I think most of them are in Norwegian, but they probably have subtitles.

As for English shows, we do not dub, we use subs. Most people understand English however, as we are a trade heavy nation.
We almost never dub, but it does happen. Mostly for kids' movies and cartoons.

The Ættestup,( literally Kin-dive or Relative Jump) was when people got too old and felt like a burden, so they would go jump off a cliff to spare the family an ext mouth to feed. You can see it in the film Midsommar too. It used to be a real thing. The eskimoes used to get onto a drifting piece of ice and just go and either freeze or drown. Here the joke is that nobody wants to do it after seeing the first one. The guy watching them is just a slave so he does not care if they do it or not. SO they decide to run off instead, I mean as long as they are gone, they are not burdens.So they all escape
Most of the shows that are Norwegian but says Netflix original is shows that have aired in Norway and then Netflix buy them with the rights to call them original Netflix shows.
A lot of Norwegian shows are in English or have a lot of English in it cause it dosent really matter if it’s English or Norwegian if your between the age of 10-70 to be honest:p
tbh most shows on tv in norway is in english very few movies are made in norwegian language

Some shows like "Home for Christmas" (Hjem til Jul), are also dubbed in English. If can be a good entrance to get a glimpse of Norway from the "inside", and relateable to Americans since christmas is so essential to western culture.
Tyler, if you are reading this, I'm sure that the trailers have the option to turn on English subtitles.
I found it amusing that in the first season of Lilyhammer, Steven Van Zandt drove a Think, the tiny electric car that was a rare Norwegian car.
A show that I find on Netflix here in Norway, but maybe not in the United States, is the crime drama Varg Veum, based on the books by Gunnar Staalesen, and set in Bergen. They make good use of the location.
Fun to see tyler delving into Norwegian media. Its pretty different from American media in pacing and where they put the focus. American media goes quickly and focuses on the bigger picture while the Nowegian/scandinavian media is more on the individual characters.
Maybe tyler can make a channel reacting to foreign entertainment media now that he has a list of series lol.

We don't have "voice over" on any tv-show or movie, unless its for kids, so we watch everything from English-speaking countries in English
Love how no one is going it's with Steven van Sant from the Sopranos or the guitar player of the E Street band for the last 800 years... Him and Bruce are basically like Bono and the Edge, or Billy Idol and Steve Stevens. Come on now... The guys the Goat. Just when I thought it was over... They pull me back in. 😎
Well, you did. It could also be said to be an unofficial spin-off of Sopranos. Lilyhammer was both Bruce Springsteen and Angelina Jordan's (as herself) debut as tv-series actors. Both nicknamed "the boss". I think so far, it is the 1st and only tv-series for them.

It's a spinoff from Sopranos btw, the actors speak both english and norwegian.
It is not in anyway a spinoff from Sopranos. It just happens that one actor from the Sopranos is starring in Lilyhammer.
As for why title cards and subs are in English: We attempt to cater for non-Norwegian speaking people, to make our movies and shows internationally accessible

When Norway hire actors from USA, Germany etc. they speak their own language in Norwegian movies. There is Norwegian movies with 5 spoken languages in them.
The reason so many of the trailers use English so much, is because we are watching the trailers for the international market. Norwegian Netflix/HBO shows are also catered to the rest of the world, so it's natural that they use what English there is in the show, or at least translate the title cards.
Ragnarok and Norsemen are also words you come accross when looking for Viking stuff, so you might have heard the words, without necessarily have heard about the TV show.

A LOT of English shows are broadcast in Norway. Nothing is dubbed except kids shows. We do have subtitles, though :) I'm closing in on 40, and not once have I thought about English being a potential problem.
There's a law in Norway.. if you want to run a broadcast service here, you got to have some shows produced in Norway.. hence Norwegian Netflix productions.
And many modern shows are "export ready".. so English names and headliners, some English in between, and sometimes they're even recorded in a Norwegian and an English version. There is for example a Norwegian version of Norsemen, but there are so many more puns and a lot of funny NorwEnglish in the English version that it is considered superior even by Norwegians (the English in that show is bad on purpose).

@@mereteaasland6663 This. I love the extreme accent, it's such a stereotypical Norwegian accent, but at the same time they are REALLY articulate, which makes it more humorous. I don't think I'd laugh so much watching it in Norwegian to be perfectly honest.

Netflix is, as you say, everywhere. We mostly have the same streaming services as in the US, except locals ones (obviously). Especially with current tech, where you can just pretend to be in the US to get some services that does not normally work outside the US.
"skam" is a great show that got very popular all over the world.

00:47 Norway does have Netflix but, because most content on Netflix is American, and the USA has licensing contracts, the Norwegian Netflix Database is more often a year to several - or infinitely - behind the American Netflix in terms of movies, series, seasons, and everything else they have as content on Netflix.
Every english speaking people should watch Lillyhammer, it was great. I watched it as a Swede with subtitles and all so there's no reason not to watch it. It was super fun. better than most American TV shows.

Great video! Norway has a tv-guide where you can see what shows are currently being sent on norwegian television. Maybe you find something familiar, some american things, some norwegian things. I primarily use the VG tv-guide.
"Så var det jul igjen" ("Christmas as usual") is a cute comedy about the cultural crashes which arise when a young lady brings her Indian boyfriend home to her traditional Norwegian family for christmas.
Yes, we are that bilingual. I would say there's more English than Norwegian on our television because we import a lot of shows from the US, UK, etc. and several of our own productions can be in English as well (not everything, there are shows/movies made specifically in Norwegian). There's also a lot of other programming also in English, like documentaries, lifestyle type of content, etc. Obviously anything not in Norwegian has subtitles, but we don't necessarily need the translation they provide (at least not for English). We also import shows from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, etc. We can follow along Swedish and Danish without necessarily needing any translation (maybe a bit of help with Danish due to how they pronounce things - the words can sound very muffled/unclear to us).
The only things that ever get dubbed to Norwegian are things produced for kids below reading age. I personally detest dubbed shows/movies, there's a huge disconnect between the way the characters lips move and what you hear them say and it completely takes me out of the experience. Give me the original voices and I can read the subtitles. Besides, it's good for my language skills to hear how words are meant to be pronounced. Even in languages I haven't learned, I can still pick up the odd word here and there due to repeat usage in similar contexts.
For the shows mentioned here, I can really recommend "Hjem til Jul/Home for Christmas" (Netflix has the original Norwegian as well as an English dub if you are more comfortable with that - though I would recommend just using subtitles instead of dub - seen people comment that they prefer the original Norwegian with English subtitles rather than the English dub).
For Norwegian movies, I really recommend "Trolljegeren" (Troll Hunter) brilliantly hilarious mockumentary movie. Also "Bølgen" (The wave) is a brilliant disaster movie.

Or the "Heavywater war", or "State of happyness" (Lykkeland), OR "Atlantic crossing" ,tho much of the last one is also about UK and USA..

When they shot Norsemen, they did it in both Norwegian and English so it did not have to be remade for international broadcast.

Norsemen were filmed in both english (with intentional heavy Norwegian accent) for the international audience and Norwegian for the domestic audience.
We have subtitles on foreign language shows. You learn english really fast this way, as you can follow the story even if you don't know a lot of the language, but slowly you read the text less and less

As a Norwegian teenager, you should check out SKAM, season 2 is my favorite and I think most people would agree on that. It's on NRK, but it's gone viral world wide, I know that USA made an American version of it. I tried watching that one swell to see how similar they were, and what I realized is that they have the exact same lines and scenes, but in an American point of view. The American version is for instance not about russetiden (Our graduation celebration), which is one of the main topics in SKAM, since the show follows a group of teenagers through Videregående. which is junior, sophmore + one more year I believe, since we attend school one year more than you do in America.
Sure, we have a lot of English and American TV shows here in Norway. They have Norwegian subtitles though. We do not dub anything though, except for children’s films and shows.
Even Disney movies geared towards kids (like "Moana 2") have showings in both English and Norwegian in Norwegian cinemas.
That's not really because we're bilingual though (even though we are), but rather that we prefer subs over dubs in general, even when we don't understand the original language.
To give an example: "Your Name" was shown in Norwegian cinemas with Japanese audio and Norwegian subs only. No Norwegian dub was ever made, and they never showed the English dub in our cinemas either.
First! and oh! you should watch the Norwegian movie called "the wave" or "Bølgen" it's on youtube, with sub-titles! you will LOVE it!
I totally agree, Bølgen is a good introduction to Norwegian movies. Its pretty "slow pace" in comparison to American movies, and like typical nordic movies: more centered around the family and the family dynamics.
Netflix and other major streaming giants has obligated them self to devote some of the income to produce and hire local staffed movies. Netflix was doing it before they were forced to because they needed local content, since they don't buy rights for movies or shows for the whole world just some select ones so they also see the need for local content and if they produce it them selves they are the rights holder and can do what they want with it. There is a ton of spanish netflix productions since there is a whole bunch of spanish speaking countries in the world.
Streaming services in Norway, or rather Europe is required to stream content from the country they are streaming in as well.

You also have Max Manus, Headhunters, Bølgen, Skjelvet, Tre nøtter til Askepott (a movie recreation of old movie that's always played on national TV each Christmas eve), Exit
In Lillehammer they poke a lot of fun about norwegian bureaucrasy. Like the "staring a bar" referanse in the clip. You don't just start a bar i norway. First you must pass a test to show you know all the rules for running the buissnes part. Taxes, employee rights and so on. Then a test in the laws about the selling of alkohol. Every single employee must also pass a test to be allowd to sell alkohol. If you want to sell food as well, another test for you and another test for every Employee. Then you must selekt the right place. Some places you must close the bar by midnight other places you can keep open til 3 o'clok at night witch is the absolut lates allowd in Norway. The bar must also be up to strict building codes. If you try to have the same sink for rinsing glasses and washing hands for example, no licens for you. Then is the licor licens. prices starts at 600 dollars but are in most cases much higher. The price is set by how much you sell so you must make a good gesstemat. When you get the licor licens you must now try hard to keep it. Random checks can come with no warning and form so many places. The "licor controlers" drops by. If they se people beeing to drunk, you get closed for the day and a mark gets put on your record. 12 points in less than 2 years you loos your licens. a employee who cant prove they pass the test, mark on your licence. People under the age limit, mark. Glases from the bar satt down outside the property line, mark. Cosumer in the bar, drinking or not, after closing, mark. And that's just a few of the rules. There is ALOT more. Then you have the "work controlers" Unlicesed bounser, mark. Employee signed in or not on the worksheet for that day, mark. Work benches not clean enough, mark. Not making shure all employees take 4 week vacation (not get offerd, but actually take) mark. And so on and so on. Then both police and fire departementet can drop by. Too many people inside, mark. Not enough firedrills for emloyees, mark. And ofcause the cardinal rules. No advertising for alkoholic drinks, even inside the bar and absolutly NO spesial offers like 2 for 1 or happy hour, no credit. Never ever offer someone alkohol for free. Don't even buy your best friend a pint unless you are clocked out, out of uniform, on the other side of the bar and get a college to por it for you. The book of rules is bigger than the bible. I kidd you not. If you loose your licence you must lock the doors for minimum 1 week and then apply for a new one, witch you are not 100% guaranteed to get. Deppends on severity of infraction and how many times you lost is before. The more times you loos it, the longer the wait for beeing able to aply again gets. And offcause you have to pay every time. It is nearly impossible to bribe anyone cause absolutly every pice of paperwork must be done right and changes hands severeal times before it gets apoved. We like to drink in norway, but we like rules more. Duglas Addams aparantly got the inspiration for the Vogon after a meeting with the norwegian bureaucrasy 😂

Tyler, there has been sent foreign series all the time on Norwegian television, the only time they dub it is for children's movies like Firefighter Sam. But let's take Poirot or Heartbeat or Lassie or Bonanza - they are all sent in plain English audio with Norwegian subtitles as garniture. My nearly 80-year-old grandparents have read these Norwegian subtitles since the inception of the Norwegian public broadcast service. They don't know much English and there seems to be a certain threshold level of that particular skill. I am from a rural place and we, the pupils, had to correct the English teacher quite a lot. Not on grammar because who cares, but stuff like - and I am serious - referring to 9/11 as "the 9th of November".
Its almost an extended version from sopranos, you see them at the end👍😂

And if you can find the right episode in Lillyhammer, Angelina Jordan, who you listened to a while ago singing Bohemian Rapsody, actually perform in one of the episodes. She is singing in a bar. Back then I think she was 9 years or so.
What makes norsemen so funny is that its sort of portrayed as how we norwegians would be vikings in todays scosiety. Vikings have such a fears reputation and were so ruthless but if we were still vikings today this is how we would act😂

Fun fact. Ragnarok is probably the least popular out of the first 3 shows you looked at simply because it has only been on netflix while the two others originated on Norwegian linier TV
I had a smal part part in the show Lilyhammer season 2, and extra in season 1. Recommended. Steven and the actor Alan Ford was a Sweetheart, so kind. And he had so many stories to tell 😊😊

08:05 I would say that it isn't a stretch if I say 80%+ of Norwegian TV, Cinema, and Radio media is in English. And a lot of the Norwegian produced media also tend to be in English, most likely to capture a wider audience than if it were in Norwegian.

Tyler, you have yet a lot to learn. Broaden your mind, because the whole world use streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and HBO to just name a few. And yes, there are tons of Norwegian movies on all of those streaming services. And they are all subbed into English, so you could follow. There is a whole world of wonder. Spanish, French, Chinese, Danish, Norwegian, Polish, Portugeese, Greek content on all of those streaming services.
Beforeigners is a very good serie. Very original and with great acting.
Unfortunately the show wasn't renewed after the HBO/Warner merger, so it doesn't seem there will be a third season. The show was also one of the MANY shows that HBO purged from their archives, so it can't be streamed anymore.

Hi, from norway here. two facts here about lilyhammer and norsemen.
1. Lillyhammer IS a norwegian AND english speaking show, merged with norwegian and american actors.
2. Norsemen is "Vikingarna" in norwegian and if you watch "Norsemen" it is in bad nor-english, if you watch "vikingarna" the show is in norwegian language.
Postmortem is GREAT, new season comming up soon. I live like a 25 min drive from Skarnes. :)
I was actually in season 2 of Hjem Til Jul (Home For Christmas) and the movie Viking Ulven (Viking Wolf)
Unlike the US, we practically never dub anything, unless it is children's shows that hasn't been made in Norway. There are subtitles if you need translations, although most of the people I know will usually need some time to even realize if an English speaking movie isn't subtitled. So to use your own words; yes, Norway is that bilingual. Being bilingual in the sense that you can understand, and be understood in a language that is not your own, is pretty common around the world. Your second language isn't necessarily English, but it will usually be relevant for the region of the world where you live.
Whether TV shows, and movies are in Norwegian, or English has very little influence on how popular they become in Norway.
We are used with subtitles in norway. Even if it in Norwegian because of the diacelcts. We have different words for the same.
Most of these shows , are actually available in english also... =)
We don't dub things in Norway. Only kids shows/cartoons/animations. Shows for adults are always in original language with subtitles, be it english, french, icelandic... you name it.
I think many Norwegian sometimes forgot the Norwegian word of something but remember the english word.
Only France, Spain, and Germany shows their own language first i belive. Norway used to show swedish children shows in Swedish and Danish(we dont dub that fast), instead of dubbing it. Most likely the reason why kids from the 80s understand swedish and danish easily compared to the younger generations.

All Norwegians Understand and speak English well, using English in tv shows, movies and commercials is normal here, the population in Norway is not big enough to warrant Dubbing of movies, so watching English talking movies is completely normal here. (exception is children's show and movies)
Norsemen is actually 2 different shows (one being filmed in Norwegian and another in English, same actors mostly same jokes) (Norsmen(English) Vikingane(Norwegian))
Norseman: Yes, they made it in two versions, both in Norwegian and English. I think it is better in Norwegian, but of course, I cant prove it, unless you understand Norwegian.

Yes we watch a lot of English series and movies, I grew up with MTV, MAD tv and lots of other popular shows. We have the options to use subtitles, but if its English I choose that instead of Norwegian.
A LT FOR NORGE is back on Norwegian tv (TvNorge) in a couple of weeks....haven't been made new seasons since prob. 2019 (before corona) so kind of looking forward to it........ probably not on Netflix

We are bilingual, it is not uncommon that shows made in Norway have English as the main language, it might depend on what type of show it is, but we are thought English in school from we are in Elementary school all the way up to College. so we basicly have two Languages English and Norwegian.

Not gonna lie. Never heard of Ragnarok. But I LOVED Lillyhammer, and Norseman is so hilarious.
We have a lot of content in Norwegian (most is), but we do indeed have some hybrid shows like Lillyhammer. But we mostly have like super corny desperate humour shows. I'd recommend Neste Sommer or Hvite Gutter.

In the movie «Sun lit» you see my house 👍❤️🇳🇴 it shoot in Lofoten, Jenny slater and Gillian Andersson from X files spent time in our house and slept on the couch (Jenny) they had a good time👍😂 not many can say they showed up at the door 😂❤️❤️

If you want to see Norwegian series in Norwegian and you thought Norsemen would be funny but got let down since it was in accented English, you might want to check out "Vikingane" on NRK. Not to be confused with "Vikingene" or "Vikings". I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
