I am a South African medical doctor, working in South Africa and follow a lot of research work including Dr Bickman's. Every day I wish we had been told these at medical school. Our professors taught us the standard of care and told us it is evidence based.
Today my colleagues speak ill of me, some say I am fake.
Seeing things weren't going to change, I opened my own hospital in my local town and are practicing Functional Health Care. It is so rewarding! The people we have helped run into big numbers and with my team we are hard at work.

I wish I had found this information 20 years ago. I was diagnosed type 2 in 2003 with a fasting blood sugar above 650. I have had all of these symptoms for at least part of the past 20 years and am hoping that it isn't too late to repair. I was up to 350 units of insulin per day 6 months ago, but with long term water fasts for the past 2 months, I am completely off of the meds. Thank you so much!

About 25 years ago I had several skin tags on my neck. I had heard thru a functional/alternative medicine organization this was a sign of insulin resistance/metabolic disorder and impending diabetes. I asked my regular allopathic doctor if this was so and he laughingly told me no. Typical run of the mill American doctor was clueless.

Then I cut carbs (no bread, pasta, potatoes, sweet stuff), added walking and easy cycling, then 16/8 fasting 2 meals high protein and fat, and I lost 8kg (10%) within 2 month. And I was not hungry.

My insulin resistant symptoms were misdiagnosed as anxiety by 2 doctors. The doctors only prescribed me anti-anxiety meds. It's probably because I told them that my job (at the time) was causing me extreme stress. I tried to tell them I think its something more but they kept dismissing it as just anxiety even after blood work. Since the doctors couldn't help me, I knew I had to try to help myself. My diet had been very bad (lots of sugar & carbs) coupled with high stress which is what lead to the super bad symptoms. After lots of research, I decided I would need to lower my stress levels by quiting my high stress job and then change to a healthier diet. I chose a anti-inflammatory diet. After a few months, my symptoms were gone. It's been almost a year now and my symptoms never returned.

I always thought the idea of giving someone who's insulin resistant more insulin to "Cure" them ridiculous. My grandfather pretty much killed himself doing that because at some point he figured he'd regulate his insulin intake himself while eating even more sugary food. He almost lost a leg in the process when he was at the hospital and was making kind of a recovery. Then he felt like eating pizza while he was still at the hospital and the moronic doctor in charge that day gave him the go to eat whatever he wanted. He didn't last too long after that.

This man's body was able to survive because of the stored nutrients, namely fat. When I started the carnivore diet I barely ate, but I had excess fat, about 20lbs. It was about 3 months later, after eating very little meat/fat, I started to eat more. The body had used up the stored fat, so I was hungrier, if I have it right. thank you for interviewing Dr. Bikman.

I have been doing the 16 / 8 fast for 2 months and that has all gone , my body seemed to tell me what to do . Don’t get hungry any more , + I have smaller portions when I do eat . My husband has reversed his type2 diabetes , but just with diet , not fasted yet . Feel so much better my BP is under control . Thank you for making me feel like I’m on the right track . Between the tropics fruit grows 12 months a year so they were consumed in large quantities. There is scientific evidence of aboriginal peoples using tools to grub up root vegetables and eat them. The insulin tree in this video at the 4:30 mark is nothing short of brilliant, Steve. I'd like to see it expanded. In the roots, I'd like to see "inflammation", I know it's at the top and needs to be there but it needs to be there as a root cause as well. Mal absorption needs to be there as well, as it's a precursor to "nutritional deficiencies" which also need to be there. B1, B6 & Choline are common deficiencies that lead to a fatty liver, but are also causal to insulin resistance. Vitamin D makes the list and certain minerals should be closely examined as well.
A cut/paste: "Markers of liver fat such as serum alanine aminotransferase activity have been shown to predict type 2 diabetes in several studies independent of obesity. The fatty liver thus may help to explain why some but not all obese individuals are insulin resistant and why even lean individuals may be insulin resistant, and thereby at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease."
At the top of the tree, comb through Dominic D'Agostino's online videos to grow the list @ the 15 min mark of "Optimizing Ketogenic Nutrition". Type 1 Diabetes, POTS and epilepsy should be on the top of the tree above.
Kabuki Syndrome, Anesthesia resistance, Oxygen toxicity seizures, epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet and Doose syndrome, while much lesser known mental illnesses, should also make the list. There are more. It should be noted that insulin resistance doesn't directly cause these diseases but couples up with other causes to do so. When parts of the brain become insulin resistant, the brain can't feed the cells the percentage of fuels it's used to running on (mainly glucose at 95 to 97% in a high carb diet). Remember, the brain (and heart) prefers to run on 72% Ketones.
If Ketones are not present as an alternative fuel, the brain or parts of the brain experiencing insulin resistance starves of glucose. Without Ketones to switch to, the brain or parts of the brain become atrophied or experience cellular death in the same way as dementia and Alzheimer's. The disease depends on the area of deprivation. A couple things that really struck me with Dominic's exploration of Ketosis was the ability to hold one's breath for twice as long (mitochondria strips glucose from fatty acids far more efficiently).
Another test with humans under 5x atmospheric pressures allowed humans to live 15 to 20 minutes as opposed to passing out the usual 5 minutes for someone not in Ketosis. These are not practical conditions to live in, but suggest that oxygen deprivation is far less likely to happen while in Ketosis due to major changes to the Mitochondria being repurposed to run on Ketones as opposed to glucose. This isn't entirely related to the brain. The heart contrary to popular opinion, also likes to run on majority ketones. When the heart is fueled by the fuel it prefers to run on (ketones), the volume of blood is increased feeding more nutrients (and oxygen) to the brain. ;)
Now... lets grow this tree to it's full ugly hideous splendor!

    • @Lorne.Mccuaig
      @Lorne.Mccuaig Год назад +1

@Ludakris When we are fasting, our kidneys improve on the elimination of salts. Part of it is related to burning glycogen early on as Glycogen is saturated in Potassium as a fight or flight ready to go fuel to burn. Potassium as we should know, is the antagonist to sodium. Normally during a fast as a consequence of running low on sodium (iodine can also play a role here), one will experience cold hands and cold feet.
You are however, experiencing cramps which is unusual because it suggests that one is low on potassium (I'm a big promoter of juice fasting to rebalance PH myself). Since Potassium is the antagonist to sodium, if we have too much sodium in our system, potassium will flush it out (and vice versa) but this can lead to a potassium deficiency (and therefore cramps). Have you been taking salts for a fast, perhaps too many? Because we should, but there are limits as to what to take.
Otherwise, I would suggest one check out some you tube videos. Do a search on foot cramps and see what Dr. Berg has to say on "feet cramping". "Feet & Keto Leg Cramps at Night on Ketogenic Diet?: Dr.Berg" Cramps are often (but not always) caused by a deficiency and Dr. Berg is in the high 90's specific to deficiencies. Sometimes people on Keto concentrate too much on the macro and forget to eat enough greens. Always try to put greens on the plate. ;)

The reason it didn’t work is quite simply because people didn’t follow the advice ! If they had then there would be no obesity and health crisis. Being overweight and not exercising is a huge contributor to the world health crisis. The current obsession with Keto is going to reap untold long term damage - look at Paul Saladino’s experience. Intake of dietary fibre has the highest correlation with a reduction in all cause mortality. Insulin production is a fantastic evolutionary trait and just to put the record straight Whey Protein powder spikes insulin ok.

I just watched a documentary on the corporate profiteering around type 1 diabetes and the rise in type 2 diabetes. The terrible choice facing type 1 diabetics, who have to pay such extraordinary prices for their absolutely essential insulin, broke my heart. But the situation with type 2's is a TIME BOMB societally, economically. Our food supply is toxic and the result is climbing insulin resistance. In my opinion, every single adult American should get a Kraft test (for chronic high insulin levels) along with their A1C. This way we could detect the road to diabetes far before it actually emerges. A low carb diet and other lifestyle changes could then be introduced to help stave this off. This is crucial; we simply cannot go on as we are.

I have that problem. Very unhealthy relationship with food. I can snack and eat when I’m not hungry. Finally I started doing alternate day fasting. I eat one day and not the next. So for example I eat on Monday and stop eating at 7 pm. I don’t eat again until Wednesday morning. I go 36-40 hours without food, depending when I start eating on Wed morning. Then I eat normally. 2 or 3 meals but I must be done by 7. No snacking in between. Period. I am strict with myself. This has allowed me to really learn hunger from appetite.
Since I am someone who can snack, snack, snack, even if I’m full, I discovered my personality is all or nothing. If I start eating I can be undisciplined and not stop, but if I’m fasting I can be super committed and not cheat. My problem is the in between state where I watch what I eat and restrict my calories. That’s when I lose control. Eating normally 4 days a week and fasting 3 days has broken my weird food addictions that I had. It also reversed my insulin resistance. On the days that I eat, i detect when I am full and I stop. I am not depriving my body, so my metabolism stays high. I have energy. I exercise. On my fast days, I am calm and peaceful. I drink water and a morning coffee with MCT oil. I only go on a long walk, 3-4 miles and go to bed early.
When I eat, I only have any combination of the following foods: fish, grass fed beef, poultry, avocados, nuts, olives and olive oil, pumpkin seeds, eggs, yogurt, butter, leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, blackberries, coffee with MCT, and fresh lemons. I make simple meals and not having many choices is the best thing for me.
