This is what it sounds like: Prince and our perception of music
Coolidge Corner Theatre (Brookline, MA): October 21, 2019
Berklee professor and frequent Prince collaborator Susan Rogers speaks about music, memory, and working with Prince. We encourage you to pair this conversation with PURPLE RAIN!
Presenter: Susan Rogers is a professor of music production and engineering at Berklee College of Music. She holds a doctorate in psychology from McGill University, where she studied music cognition and psychoacoustics under researchers Daniel Levitin and Stephen McAdams. Her research focuses on auditory memory, the perception of musical signals, and the influence of musical training on auditory development. For two decades prior to her science career, Rogers was one of the world's few women known for her work as a record producer, engineer, mixer, and audio electronics technician. Career highlights include years (1983-1988) as staff engineer for recording artist Prince and working with such diverse artists as Barenaked Ladies, David Byrne, Tricky, and Tevin Campbell.
Rogers is the director of the Berklee Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory. In tandem with business partner and former student Matthew McArthur '10, Rogers launched Boston's first nonprofit recording studio, The Record Company, to offer low-cost recording facilities to area musicians and free music technology instruction to area teens.

I’m 55 years old. I grew up listening to Prince first 6 albums on repeat. They became part of the fabric of my life. I adored Prince music when the folks around me were lukewarm. In 2004 I was 35 had enough money and autonomy to attend my first Prince Concert in Detroit at the Joe Lewis Arena. I finally had the means & opportunity to see my favorite artist LIVE. This was a concert of a lifetime! It lasted close to 3 hours. I would never ever be the same as I witnessed greatness performing at a genius level. It is 2024 now and I binge on all the live Prince concerts and information about Prince on RUclips. Instinctively at a young age of 11-12 I knew I was listening to a musician like no other and now in my fifties it’s life affirming to know that my intuition was right about Princes greatness. Love You Prince & still listening to your music. RIP Dear One….

OMG!!! You literally took the words out of my mouth. I couldn't have said it any better. I feel exactly the way you said U feel. I am also 51 & grew up worshipping everything thing that Prince did . Yes, You are correct. He is a part of the fabric that is my life and I love my life, by the way! Wow & I too at a very young age, was without a doubt very aware of fact that I was truly witnessing greatness. In real life that level of reallization while it is actually happening right in front of your eyes has only ever occurred several times & by that I mean actually seeing someone in real life doing exactly what they was put on this Earth to do. It raises the hair on my arms everytime!!! It almost gives me the good chills because I know what I'm seeing and I realize it while I'm seeing it. It's not hindsight type thing It's the complete opposite actually. Anyways i'm Blabbering. I just wanted to say how ironic our lives are solely & only through & because of music. Thank U

I love listening to her tell her stories about Prince. Prince earned the respect of all musicians not only because he was an amazing talent but also because he was literally the Michaelangelo of music. As she stated while other musicians had professionals to help them, Prince took on the overwhelming idea of kids who had no idea and sculpted a masterpiece.

That's fascinating. I just did a tour of Paisley Park, and in watching videos on YT, I heard one of experience curators say that Prince wanted his music to be just like what she is describing above with the dots. He envisioned Paisley Park as a place where more great music will come out of it than the sum of all of his creations, his children, if that makes sense.

Wow!!! That was an amazing fifteen minutes. I have never heard the comparison of Prince and Michael Jackson presented so well. I think it was Andrea Cymone who said that when he and Prince were in their high school bands they did not see the high school bands as their competition. They saw The Jackson's and Michael as their competition and Prince never took his eye off that Prize. I have pictured in my mind the two of them dressed in their clothing of the 80s with Michael running comfortably out in front not seeing Prince gaining on him. Then out of the corner of his eye, he sees something purple and his eyes get BIG and his stride gets longer and faster as he sees what he is coming up behind him, not even knowing previously that there was stiff completion in his climb to the top. He was shaking himself loose from his brothers and not wanting to share his identity and become a separate individual. And then Prince comes into view, not knowing that Prince had his eye on him as a rival for the past ten years. Susan Rogers got to experience that excitement vicariously, up close and personal, and her perspective of that time is amazing!!!

That's interesting your analogy. I've seen both of these Legendary Artists Live and in Concert. They have been integral in my life as a recording artist myself. I love them both. The fact that they played a great role in the sound track of my life. But, they play a great role in my development as a performer and songwriter. So I always found the weight if competition between the two futile. But, I guess the fake media had fun with fiasco. May they Rest In Power and continue to sublime people all over the world ,for the good of mankind.

Sorry to break it to you but that’s a crock of shit. Want proof? In 1987 - when Prince was even in a greater position of power than he was in 1982/3 - Prince demanded to Warner Bros that they release a triple album he was naming Crystal Ball. Warner Bros refused. Prince threatened the record company, his managers etc. They still told him NO. Totally contrary to Prince’s demands, Warner’s allowed a double album which we know to be Sign O The Times. When you aren’t the company, i.e. when you work for the company, you ask.

Actually, it's not a crock of shit, especially when you consider that Prince was not well known before PR was filmed. Not to mention it was originally said that John Travolta was considered for the role as The Kid. All he needed was to get a foot in the door, and he did need his management to get folks with money to let him. It doesn't matter he didn't get his triple album he demanded, but getting a greenlight for PR is what elevated him from rock/pop/R&B star to GOAT status.
