    Taught my family about the value of burdock roots back in the 80's and we foraged them from the wild in the most precarious places. There was a huge patch growing in the neighboring county and we harvested about 4.5kg or 10 lbs from a county park without being noticed. We also harvested field mushrooms from the same park. I miss doing this stuff.

    Next time wrap the roots in the leaves, then roast. It's softer and more delicate taste. The bad thing about burdock, if you eat a lot it tends to give gas and causes to pass wind (farts). You might check out Japanese and Asian channels for cooking recipes, burdock has been a large part of the Asian diet. Very good video.

That is what he loved to be in anyway, and the plant does look nice to eat and I will be looking to see if we have any like that here that is eatable. The root is looking so nice and edible too and I would be eating it if I had to.

    Burdock is definitely one of the deepest and most work of the edible roots especially with a digging stick. They love rocky and gravel soils which makes it even harder but worth it in a survival situation. I cheat with a tomahawk so I can dig out the whole root. Makes it a ton easier which is to say still hard. Very popular in Japan where it is called Gobo and eaten in stirfry. Nice video lilly.

    you can shred the root with a knife with some of the skin still on, and cook it in a bit of soy sauce and mirin along with carrots, or cook it in stew with whatever game meat you can find, and it tastes really good. google "gobo recipes" and there are plenty of Japanese cuisine recipes on burdock root.

  • @BornRandy62

    Burdock and Rhubarb are related plants. Rhubarb is generally cultivated or planted as a landscape or garden plant. Burdock is usually close by. They look close alike but rhubarb has red stems. The rules are opposite for the plants. Stems only for rhubarb and leaves and roots only for burdock. The poison aspect is the same. If the Burdock plant has a flower it is more than one year old and will have larger roots.

    It is illegal to pick Burdock in the U.K. unless you have explicit permission from the landowner. On the other hand it is still legal to shoot a Welshman from the walls of Chester castle as long as you use a bow and it's before 2 in the afternoon. Gotta love England

    Hi Lilly,
    I expected the burdock to have larger root, as you said better if there was cattail around. Try with burdock roots and the cattails to cook them between two flat rocks wrapping the tubers in the leaves, so the ‘boil’, they will be much more edible.
    Take care

    • @haggispixi
      @haggispixi 8 лет назад +2

      +Coconut Eater They are very different looking plants, easy to tell apart. What you don't want to do is eat any burdock that has belladonna growing near it as belladonna roots can impart some very nasty stuff to the burdock roots. Always follow the plant down to the root, don't just chop and dig at random and if you're not sure, don't risk it.

    Nice vid. couple of things: 1) It is good to use high tech devices- pocket lighters are one of them-as long as the are durable. Another item might be a high quality bi or monocular. 2) picking wild edibles are great but try to distance your foraging from active roadways or cultivated fields sprayed with pesticides.
