Yeah, this video on the surface may seem like a stupid joke, but let's get one things straight. These are 2 serious musicians. The drummer has amazing technical skills, as mentioned by others in the comments, and so does the sax player (though we see less virtuosity on display). The composition for this tune is good, but the playing is so tight it's amazing. Really great piece of music, unironically.
Set aside the absurdity for a minute--the drummer's polyrhythm, the seamless saxophone altissimo register movement and obvious technique, playing that INSANE unison rhythm...this is REALLY tough music lmao (i'm a band director lol)
When it's time for the music to start they drag out this closed porta-potty, and it stays closed so all the people get is this confusing muffled screams of hell
This goes from dubstep, to grindcore, to smooth jazz, back to grindcore, then to syncopation, then to a hybrid of dubstep and free jazz, and back to grindcore for the final few seconds. And these dudes are wearing clown masks in a porta potty. This is literally a fever dream and I love it.
I love everything about this. The music is actually really fucking good too. A bit of horror, silliness, drum and bass, swing, and jazz. Fuck I wish we had more artists chasing this sound.
People don't realize how actually difficult this has been to compose and play and how skilled these people are. This is some form of art and has been well composed. It's more than just "oijoijoijoijoijiii"

I have an appreciation for putting in the time and effort to attain musical proficiency and then using that skill to convince people that you don't actually have it while just peppering in the evidence that you do like we're all in on a joke.
You know, my boyfriend has been obsessed with these guys for a whole year now, and I think I've finally figured out what it is that enamors him so: this group is literally what you'd get if you took all of his inner thoughts, ideas, and personality, and turned them into a band. He is just 3 shitposts in a trench coat.
Louis Cole is just Absurdist shitposting mostly with the music, but yeah. There's some Existential Philosophy embedded in this. If you're using your Jazz degree from USC to do this? Louis Cole and Sam Gendel are both heavily into Albert Camus and Postmodernism. They're both obviously very skilled musicians, but simultaneously? What does that actually matter in the grand scheme of it all? Neither of them appear to have inflated Egos on the matter despite their musical accolades. Just more cosmic cockroaches riding a rock and hurdling through the Universe like everyone else in the grand scheme of it all. I find comfort in that acknowledgement; other people find existential crises and cosmic horror in that acknowledgement.
kinda dissapointed nobody is pointing out the section at 0:55 , the amount of practice it mustve taken for both of them to nail the rhythm right even with it being so random is insane. these guys are actually killer musicians.
It's not random, it can easily be written out and practiced, or sight read on the spot as long as you understand timing. The polyrhythm the drummer is playing and the technical sax solo are way more impressive
