Just to add on to Freezai: The Delta Stream ability removes the weakness of flying types so Mega Ray is no longer weak to rock attacks. That's not 100% true as Mega Ray is still weak to Stealth rocks. But interesting video regardless Freezai 😊
@@monnamonsta I'm not sure if hazard damage kicks in before ability or that the ability itself does not protect Mega Ray against status attacks such as Stealth Rocks
M-Rayquaza was just too vanilla strong, the title of Legendary among Legendaries, Uber among Ubers really fitted him, he hadn't any particularly incredible niche (in fact, their "niche" was basically denying other niches), instead just being stupid strong, more or less like what could happen if you let Mewtwo go free for a day in OU. Or something like that. The creation of Anything Goes with M-Rayquaza's ban had the kind of funny side effect of people deciding to bring DPP!Arceus into the AG Tier as well, I don't remember if we had ever seen a retrospective change (after generation's end) that wasn't from the pre-Smogon Tiers, though Arceus was kind of the unique case, both with the Pokémon themself and the weird dynamics it had for been a Pokémon only available at Level 100.
God I remember this. I JUST started getting into competitive Pokemon before ORAS and the hysteria over MegaRay was something else. If people were calling Ubers "the banlist" before MegaRay, then this was some unprecedented shit. Good times.
Cost of using Mega Rayquaza: You can't use other Mega pokemon. Pros of using Mega Rayquaza: It has high Attack, supplemented by Dragon Dance and Life Orb. It has high speed, supplemented by D Dance. Basically once it starts to sweep you can't stop it. Its weaknesses are that of mono Dragon but its Flying type moves still have STAB. It has 120 bp Flying and 80 bp +2 priority moves. And still has one more moveslot. So once it's got one or two d dance you'll be blessed to live a hit. And it still has good bulk
A mega of a legendary who can run an item makes sense as the first Pokémon to need a ban from Ubers. The second big one being a random minmaxed sword dog, not really

I love how Mega Ray was so OP that they had to reformat the banlist into a proper tier and make a new banlist.. I bet Eternamax Eternatus is in Anything Goes too since... 1125 BST
I honestly don't care about competitive. But for a Pokemon with an Amazing Lore, Amazing Design, Amazing Shiny colors (That fits both Mega and Regular variants) that performs great in competitive and a Mega Form that created a new tier that paved way to other absurd monsters in the following generation like Zacian-C, E-Eternatus and G-Darmanitan. Rayquaza truly is one of the best Pokemon ever created. I do know for a fact that as long as Pokemon exists and new generations continue to come, Rayquaza itself will get outclassed but that doesn't even matter because the Legacy it left behind is forever immortalized. Something that no other Pokemon did besides Gen 1 Mewtwo.
you don't care about competitive and yet mention it being broken in competitive as being one of the reasons it's the best pokemon ever, under a video specifically about competitive pokemon. ok bro.
To be pedantic; AG has one clause... The Endless Battle clause. This is because a literal infinite setup can be performed on Defensive Pokemon (Hilariously dubbed "Fun-bro") and can cause Endless Battles. Slowbro @ Leppa Berry -Slack Off -Heal Pulse -Block -Recycle This very specific set is the only thing even AG won't allow.
Arceus was actually somewhat banned from standard Ubers in Gen 4, it just wasn't called AG, just Ubers with Arceus. Because of powercreep this was obviously no longer necessary when AG was created. Now Mega-Ray only resides together with Zacian and Magicarp
Not only that, but dragon ascent is just straight up an amazing move. Unlike something like draco meteor, it doesn't drop the stat it relies on so it's super easy to spam. Even if you didn't need it to mega evolve I'm pretty sure it would always be included.
I’m really enjoying the “I was banned first actually” beef from the Gen 4 Arceus crowd. Sorry Gen 4 Arceus side but based on the limited research I’ve done from this comment section “the simulator literally couldnt stop you from giving me EVs” is NOT the same as “literally the strongest thing ever by a mile”
So the funny thing is, arceus had his limited ev's and still dominated the uber tier, and even without his fairy form, arceus still has multiple options to hard wall/counter even monsters as zacian-crowned (or hero) and mray God created these monsters and still had a form to vibe check them, if that's not a flex idfk what is at this point
Arceus is also properly banned on gen 4 now via a suspect test, but yeah, that was many years later (a bit before Zacian was banned from SwSh). Rayquaza still is the first one to ever be officially AG rather than just abusing a technicality that carried over to new sims that didn't even have that problem
Mega ray just wrecks every thing tbh. Zacian, just bring a Bug Fire type as Zacian cant dmax and its stabs and fighting coverage is resisted while it can strike back with fire stab. Itd have to be forced to have Crunch on there for neutral damage
@SkullerClawer Bandicoot „Just bring a Bug/Fire type“ If a counter is 4x weak to Stealth Rocks, it might as well not be a counter at all because you have to forgo any real items in favor of Heavy Duty boots and therefore can’t use it to its full potential. Also, Behemoth Blade is still a clean 2HKO on both Bug/Fire types despite the resistance. And it doubles in power if you Dynamax.
@@skullerclawerbandicoot7966 There are no viable bug fire types you would use. Bringing irrelevant Pokémon that do nothing against the rest of the metagame outside of checking Zacian doesn’t really count. If you are going to go bring out irrelevant stuff like this, then we can say Mimikyu stops Mega Ray since Play Rough and shadow sneak always kills.
Few minor nitpicks: "Never before seen stats." Not true, as Mega Mewtwo X and Y both had a BST of 780 as well, but Mewtwo had to run a mega stone to mega-evolve which kept it in check. As you stated, Rayquaza not needing a mega stone to mega-evolve really was the tipping point, since it could run Life Orb to augment it's already insane power. Also, at the time, the only Ubers to have a BST of over 680 were Mega Salamence and Kyurem-White (700), Arceus (720), Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre (770), and the aforementioned Mega Mewtwo X and Y (780). That sounds like a lot, but that is only 6 Pokemon out of the 30 total in Ubers (excluding alternate forms). Everything else was 680 and below, meaning Mega Rayquaza was OVER 100 points above most of the competition, not almost. Again, these nitpicks are minor, but all these do is highlight how Mega Rayquaza was even more busted than you already explained.
@@rjante2236 Trying to work out the Endless Battle clause, if we recall. That's the only clause still in effect even in AG, since endless battles aren't a strategy to win so much as a trolling method.
Mega-Ray: The Pokemon that forced Smogon to put their foot down on the incorrect "Uber is a banlist" and create a *real* banlist. Hilarious. Now it's joined by Sword Doggo and Swordless Doggo as the only 3 Pokemon ever to be yeeted from Ubers. I bet Gen 9 gives us 3 more.
Mega Rayquaza: So powerful it created a banlist for the banlist. Still loses to Metal Burst Aron. ...that's actually how I KO'd it in one run. Little Cup run of the ROM hack Pokemon Unbound on Insane mode. To make matters worse, it's in doubles alongside a *full team.*
I don't think Mega Ray was the first Anything Goes Mon. Arceus came out late during a competitive gen cycle, and also technically "not legally available" at the time, such that it was banned from Ubers and put into Anything Goes for a short while.
the fact that they decided to just remove its flying type weaknesses with absolutely no tradeoffs is what did it for me. that level of absurd ignorance towards game balance is pretty much deserving of having a pokemon be removed from competitive play entirely, imo
There's an argument that Delta stream is just as imbalanced as Primordial Sea and Desolate Land, which gave their wielders a 50% boost to one of their STAB typings while NULLIFYING fire/water attacks. Of course while it famously removes Pdon's otherwise 4x weakness to water, Pogre also appreciates switching in on fire moves without even chip since it has no recovery besides rest. I think what really pushed mray over the edge was Dragon Dance + the ability to hold an item. Take away both those things, and you have still have an S/S+ pokemon but it gets reliably revenge killed by scarf xerneas (which is a set that people run anyway). Even with no ability, this thing might have been banned to AG, it just wouldn't be able to dragon dance on nearly every mon in the tier.
I think another key feature is just it's unpredictability. Sure, you have to have Dragon Ascent on there, but past that, Ray has such a shockingly wide moveset that you can really run a ton of weird stuff. Slap it on a rain team with hurricane and thunder just to really mess up the physical walls, run it defensively as either stall or support, choice band, choice specs, etc. It can do way too much and work in any position in a team slot.
Oh yeah. I remember this quite well. Insane times this was. And this kids is why Megas won't come back to the traditional Pokemon games until they have a solution for Mega Rayquaza, like giving it a dedicated item.
Shiny Rayquaza has always been my favorite before Mega Evolutions was ever a thing. The fact that's he has become the most powerful Pokemon is fucking awesome
Mainly because to change it to Mega, you do not need a specific item, so it can run any item it wants (except for Pokemon specific items or Z-Crystals). Instead it only needs to know Dragon Ascent. Oh, and Dragon Ascent is not just a gimmicky move, it is the Flying-type version of Close Combat. An already great move, that also benefits Rayquaza a lot, as it gives it a reliable STAB Flying move, which it lacked before. If it was a garbage move, it might not have been ban-worthy.
They don't seem to be... They are, they are incredibly broken. Mega Rayquaza doesn't exist in Gen8 but even if it did, it would be OHKO by Zacian. It's faster than almost everything and has an insane Attack stat, plus, it gets a +1 boost in attack on entrance.
er zacian has - an incredible defensive and decent offensive typing - 723 attack with ada switching in, enough said - rly good stabs in play rough and blade, plus p good coverage - decent defenses - swords dance which no one runs but i just wanna mention because a +3 zacian is funi - amazing speed tier - and finally, i dont think it has any counters, only somewhat checks
One of the hardest hitting things in Pokemon(insanely high attack stat plus intrepid sword), good speed, good bulk, has both the best offensive and the best defensive types in the game, good moveset;etc
@@AffyMoon good speed more like fantastic speed 138 base normal base 148 crowned i can count on my hands the small list of things that out speed it only 13 mons normally out speed its normal form with half of those being shit mons like ninjask and electrode lol
Man....people who think Mewtwo was busted in Gen 1 have no idea how absurd Mega Ray Ray was when it was first announced. Considering it was Primal Groudon that took the #1 Uber spot after the ban to AG just imagine how borked Mega Ray was when it could OHKO said #1 mon with a mere Surf or Waterfall right through Desolate Land. The rest of the tier was terrorized in singles because even though Fairy was immune to Dragon the new Flying STAB was just that damn good. Mega Ray was a beast among beasts and neither Arceus Forms nor Ultra Necrozma have come close to it's dominance. The only mon to enter that realm as of now is Zacian-Crowned and even his movepool is nothing compared to Big Ray's.
@@mysterysecret6815 Lmao, read the comments bro. Matches were decided depending upon who's Mega Ray was healthy. It over-centralized a metagame even when monstrous threats and immediate checks existed compared to Mewtwo in Gen 1 being the only Uber. It's not the same as compensating for inflation. Mewtwo was busted, yes, Mega Ray was in a completely different dimension by comparison.
Don't know how to put this to sound more witty but I find the comparison between Mega Rayquaza and pre-errata Chaos Emperor Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh pretty amusing, one dragon got banned from its games 'banlist' while the other one literally created theirs games one.
anything goes literally means anything goes : mega ray , evasion strats , no sleep clause, more than one species of pokemon ,ohko moves . basically anything
Because he could hold an item while mega evolving. He could mega evolve without a mega stone. He didn't need it. He only needed to learn the move dragon ascent or something. So he could hold life orb or literally anything while other mega pokemon couldn't. That's the only reason
That alongside the fact that it’s ability took away its rock weakness, let it resist electric and halved its quad weakness from ice combined with the weather negate just made it feel all the more threatening.

Besides Zacian and Mega Ray, Gen 4 Arceus is the only other legendary banned to AG. Farceus Tier as they would call it.
Another notable thing about Gen 4 Arceus is that it's obtained at Level 100, thus its EVs are locked to 100 per stat. Arceus only has a base 101 stat on every stat and still got managed to be banned from Gen 4 Ubers.
For the God so powerful, it made more powercreep for thyself to be able to rule the tier of Gods and Goddesses without thyself be restricted by the councilmen of rankings.

As the pioneer of mega evolution lore wise, I understand why he was so OP. He was given that form to solo primal kyogre and groudon at the same time.

Cost of using Mega Rayquaza:
You can't use other Mega pokemon.
Pros of using Mega Rayquaza:
It has high Attack, supplemented by Dragon Dance and Life Orb.

Not only that, but dragon ascent is just straight up an amazing move. Unlike something like draco meteor, it doesn't drop the stat it relies on so it's super easy to spam. Even if you didn't need it to mega evolve I'm pretty sure it would always be included.
I like how gamefreak's reaction to megaray was to BUFF IT by giving it v-create lmao

So the funny thing is, arceus had his limited ev's and still dominated the uber tier, and even without his fairy form, arceus still has multiple options to hard wall/counter even monsters as zacian-crowned (or hero) and mray
God created these monsters and still had a form to vibe check them, if that's not a flex idfk what is at this point
Arceus is also properly banned on gen 4 now via a suspect test, but yeah, that was many years later (a bit before Zacian was banned from SwSh). Rayquaza still is the first one to ever be officially AG rather than just abusing a technicality that carried over to new sims that didn't even have that problem
I know most of your content is for older generations, but I think that Zacian being in AG is also a really great topic to discuss
Mega ray just wrecks every thing tbh.
Zacian, just bring a Bug Fire type as Zacian cant dmax and its stabs and fighting coverage is resisted while it can strike back with fire stab. Itd have to be forced to have Crunch on there for neutral damage
@SkullerClawer Bandicoot
„Just bring a Bug/Fire type“
If a counter is 4x weak to Stealth Rocks, it might as well not be a counter at all because you have to forgo any real items in favor of Heavy Duty boots and therefore can’t use it to its full potential.
Few minor nitpicks:
"Never before seen stats." Not true, as Mega Mewtwo X and Y both had a BST of 780 as well, but Mewtwo had to run a mega stone to mega-evolve which kept it in check.
1:07 ah yes. Rayquaza the Dragon type was weak to electric before it got this ability. It essentially now resists electric if I remember correctly.

I don't think Mega Ray was the first Anything Goes Mon. Arceus came out late during a competitive gen cycle, and also technically "not legally available" at the time, such that it was banned from Ubers and put into Anything Goes for a short while.
1:54... and Zacian-Crowned... and arceus but he got let out of jail the next gen onwards
the fact that they decided to just remove its flying type weaknesses with absolutely no tradeoffs is what did it for me. that level of absurd ignorance towards game balance is pretty much deserving of having a pokemon be removed from competitive play entirely, imo
I legit found your channel featuring this vid 🤣 new sub btw. I can tell I'm going to be learning new things here
I think another key feature is just it's unpredictability.
Um you can’t run it on a rain team. And run it defensively? Yeah no.
1:50 Zacian: Allow me to introduce myself
And nearly six years later we see Zacian also get banned from Ubers

Shiny Rayquaza has always been my favorite before Mega Evolutions was ever a thing.
The fact that's he has become the most powerful Pokemon is fucking awesome
Waynut: where do you think you are going!? I still havent preached you yet!
Gen 3 leftovers wobbuffet slowly walking towards mega Ray
imagine if deoxys attack actually had hp and defense. that's mega rayquaza
Can you do a vid on why both zacians were banned in gen 8 ubers because they don't seem to be anywhere as strong as mega ray.

Because Mewtwo in Gen 1 dominated its Gen far harder than Mega Ray in Gen 6-7? Mewtwo was a requirement in Gen 1, Mega Ray isn’t in Gen 6-7.
@@mysterysecret6815 Lmao, read the comments bro. Matches were decided depending upon who's Mega Ray was healthy. Don't know how to put this to sound more witty but I find the comparison between Mega Rayquaza and pre-errata Chaos Emperor Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh pretty amusing, one dragon got banned from its games 'banlist' while the other one literally created theirs games one.
In all honesty the first time I saw Mega Ray labeled AG on showdown I just assumed it meant A God
anything goes literally means anything goes : mega ray , evasion strats , no sleep clause, more than one species of pokemon ,ohko moves . basically anything
And somehow they GF was able to create something as strong as Mega Ray
Zacian in AG: "Nice place you got here!"
