@@kartiksaraf4676 I didn't say I wanted it, but it is another way they could've balanced Mega-Ray. Most Megas have to carry an otherwise worthless item that precludes you from using another item. Hey Joey, I think this is a really cool start to more story-themed videos on your channel. I really want to see you do well, so I thought I’d mention some feedback I have that I think would improve this video, if you think that would be helpful. I noticed that many of the times competitive topics are brought up (for example, Ubers BL) you don’t explain what exactly the concepts are for those who don’t pay attention to competitive singles. I have an idea that could make these concepts easier to explain and more engaging to an audience that isn’t necessarily familiar with the competitive scene: introduce Ubers BL (or other topics related to competitive) through thematic story elements and don’t even use the term Ubers BL. Almost like describing M-Ray as the antagonist to your own personal journey to the land of legendaries (I.e. Ubers), only to run into the one that rules them all, Mega Ray. I think this is a niche that you can pull off, and would separate you from most other creators who take more of an empirical, science-y approach (such as Freezai, for example). I have nowhere near the experience in creating content as you do, but who knows, maybe it attracts some views 🤷♂️ Either way, great vid as always, hope you’re doing well 🤘🏻
What was made mega ray so cool is that it only needed a move(Dragon Accent) to Mega Evolve not a stone meaning it would benefit from held item perks (Life Orb I'm looking at you).
Someone at Game Freak must have a hard-on for the weather trio. Not only do they have the highest total stats of all trios Game Freak gave each of them special mega evolutions to completely break them.
Can you talk about the story of the legendary cybertron who sacrificed his rotoms will o wisp hits so many times that Pokémon had to buff the accuracy of the move
It's definitely not the greatest pokemon in natdex ag, let alone ever. Though with Electric Tera + balloon and shed tail support it was incredibly difficult for teams to deal with and resorted to people using silly options to deal with it (I for one ran sandstorm Ferro...on my rain team! specifically for shed!) And with other options like Tera steel and ground etc popping up for stuff like toxic and sandstorm and other things it was simply too much
The only thing as over-centralizing as evreybody loves mega-ray was gen 1 mewtwo, I mean having a psychic type with absurd special before the split, with amnesia, recover, psychic and ice beam to go for the broken freeze was /almost/ as broken as mega-ray!
Really interesting video, thank you for the insight. At times tho you are talking very fast, making it hard to understand what you are saying, looking forward to next episode!
Anything Goes was an inevitability, powercreep is always going to steadily encroach on the game and we need to be able to have an answer for it. Could you imagine current ubers if Mons like Zacian and Miraidon were allowed to just run around unchecked?
I miss Megas, Mega Rayquaza was the greatest and that's why I look up at him for belief. We need Megas back with new ones I desire like Vespiquen, Froslass, Flygon, Galarian Slowbro, etc.
Vespiquen really needs it lol. I'd love for her to get one. Flygon would be deserved considering the only reason we didn't get it in ORAS was cuz the artist got artist block. Would be nice to make up for it now.
I'm pissed off that Mega Rapidash wasn't in the first wave of Mega Evolutions. Just make it an Alicorn for goodness sake! The design already exists, all Game Freak needed to do was add flames! Here's how it should be set up. Mega Rapidash Ability: Magic Guard (blocks all indirect damage including recoil) Attack: 100 - 144 (+44) Defence: 70 - 90 (+20) Special Attack: 80 Special Defence: 80 - 90 (+10) Speed: 105 - 131 (+26)
God I remember those first few weeks of ubers. Xy ubers was one of my fav metas ever and I was really excited to load it up when oras came out, just to quickly discover that every single team I played for two weeks straight was mega Ray, two primals, geo xern, arceus and one more mon of choice (wow so creative)
The item thing really makes it way more versatile. It can use lum or the weakness reducing berries to setup. Choice sets for the surprise factors. Not to mention that it has the option to go special to power through physically defensive mons like Arceus rock, like specs draco will destroy that
Given that Gen 1 Mewtwo and even Zacian were more oppressive (and Arceus was banned from Ubers in Gen 4) Id say there are things that can describe how broken MegaRay was
Why they give this thing the highest base stat in the game, a move pool that would slam all Pokémon in existence, an ability that removes it's flying to weakness, and make it hold any item and gives it a flying type stab that's basically close combat but give a mid ass Pokémon like Regigigas slow start?
I mean Regigias is by far a mid mon (excluding slow start). It has insane stats with good bulk, decent speed and exclellent strength not to mention a very good movepool. If it didn't have Slow Start it would probbaly be Uber even without an ability
While outside of the scope of the video; in some ways there has been dominance to this extent in a tier before, gen 1 mewtwo the only real way to play against gen 1 mewtwo is your own mewtwo. There is even a funny parallel that Mewtwo leading to the creation of Ubers eventually lead to mew getting banned as well where without the precedent of the tier existing it likely wouldn’t have, much like how Mega-Ray lead to Zacian being able to get the boot later down the road
Here’s a list of the most power Pokémon according to nat dex Ubers: -calyrex shadow -mega gengar -shedinja -miraidon -mega ray Yep, all of them were more problematic and banned before may ray was
Mega rayquazza was massively OP, but people also never considered using mega bannette. Legit prankster destiny bond shuts this thing down effortlessly, as well as other threatening mega forms
I just caught my shiny jolly rayquaza about 3 days ago in BDSP in the longest soft resetting I myself ever endured. It was sooo worth it tho. Rayqyaza has been my favorite pokemon ever since I first saw it in pokemon Ruby when I was a kid. Then once I saw its shiny I then told myself "I NEED IT" and that's what I did. I pray for another pokemon game that has mega evolutions, just so I can see shiny mega ray in its true glory!
I think Arceus actually caused the creation of anything goes all the way back in diamond and pearl days, but ended up being brought back down to Ubers due to power creep, until AG was revived for Mega Ray.
It's been a while since I took a break from competitive and your channel and its nice to see how your content has developed. Love the new content and production values, just work on your speech clarity and maybe slow down a bit to sound more natural.
Honestly I had a really good set up back in gen 6-7 with Mega Char Y Talonflame, Aerodactyl, Lilligant with atk for def, and I’d try too bust they’re set up usually going for Talonflame or going for Aerodactyl or Groudon as a legendary just to make sure sunny day and rock slide were secured but I would always take some massive losses for my first two pkmn if they’re Talon and Aero or just sweep the team hard after setting a tailwind, and then cripple one of the enemy pkmn with a rockslide stab from aerodactyl flinching one, or just straight up brave birding they’re Pokémon if I knew the kill was for sure, overall charizard and lilligant take the end half of the match with a timid charizard and tailwind secured after neutralizing they’re trick roomer through either the method described or switching out one Pokémon, I had a really awesome set up, although friggin Mega Aerodactyl was a weakness, same with Kangaskhan, everything else was pretty fair though or a cake walk. Overall though Mega Rayquaza was a pretty alright pokemon, I just called it the super kamikaze Pokémon though, my set really didn’t have any interference with its abilities so it got one turn and then it was either dead on the second after killing one normal Pokémon or got mucked with a flinch/crit from a rockslide and died, Aerodactyl was a speed god back in gen 7 then things changed so he’s not as useful but maybe he’s ok with proper protection I’ve been out of the battle scene for a while.
I like the idea creating a new tier ladder for restricted mons with Uber Uber, Uber OU, and Uber UU. This way the pokemon that are way too strong for normal Ubers can gets sent to Uber Uber, and the pokemon that doesn't see play in normal Uber, but aren't allowed in normal OU, can be used in Uber UU.

The first is that no matter which mons are in an Uber or above tier, Xerneas is still one of the top 3 endgame threats after ekiller and Mray. There was no ndm in Gen 6 AG. So keys was one of the premier Xern checks. In addition, it was a spiker who also threatened darkrai with twave, making it nearly useless. Keys is nearly useless vs Don, in a 1v1, but the ability to throw up spikes in Ubers will always be useful.

Agreed, Rayquaza is the perfect legendary Pokemon
Cool design+Mega evolution+ one of the strongest Pokemon
The opening days of Anything Goes were amazing to see. Teams of 6 Rayquazas everywhere so people started running teams of 6 Klefkis to murder them, so then teams started running Numel to counter the Klefki teams and so on.

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should”
Don’t forget to slightly balance Mega-Ray they could at least have had the move he needed to learn to Mega be bad, but instead Dragon Ascent is a great move you’d want on Ray regardless.
why would you want Dragon Ascent to be bad. GF doesn't have to create pokemon that fit in a niche hobby some people have(1v1 singles). They have to create a pokemon that millions and millions will love to play with in their story. They succeeded in their task and I hope to see more once every few generations
Keep in mind between the Super Ancient Pokemon signature moves Dragon Ascent is the only one with a negative effect if Game freak truly wanted to be funny they could’ve given it an ancient power effect on top of the base 120 power it already had
@@kartiksaraf4676 I didn't say I wanted it, but it is another way they could've balanced Mega-Ray. Most Megas have to carry an otherwise worthless item that precludes you from using another item. Ray gets to just have a move that is honestly amazing for him even if it didn't give him the Mega, and he can have a held item of his choice as well thank you very much. It's funny how obviously unbalanced he is.
But to be clear, I don't actually have any huge problem in them creating the odd super-unbalanced Poke. As you alluded to, he's fun to use for a casual player.
@@dayvonlouis5187 Given how Game Freak are continually upping the ante with broken moves and Pokémon, I wouldn't rule out getting something as broken as that someday.
I fully and unironically believe that Gamefreak should make more of these, pokemon that are so ridiculously broken that you see them and think "why would they ever make this?"
They did with Zacian and Eternamax Eternatus
They need to make an unkillable wall ,smeargle but better, a perfect hazard setter and then a perfect wall breaker to like make people panic. Each individual one not being in the same gen of course we need to keep them separate so that ag becomes its own tier.

One thing I learned: Ultra Necrozma can comfortably tank a V-create, but Dragon Dance, Life Orb boosted Earthquake from Mega Rayquaza WILL put it into Extreme Speed range. I would know: it actually happened to me back in Gen 8 National Dex AG. I tried what I could, even attempting to use Ditto to reverse sweep, but it still wasn't enough. I could do nothing but helplessly, hopelessly watch as Mega Rayquaza laid waste to my whole team. This team was a for funsies team.) My opponent had Yveltal, Ho-Oh, Necrozma-DM, Mega Rayquaza, Arceus-Dark, and Calyrex-Shadow. Long story short: my opponent still had Rayquaza, Calyrex-Shadow (whom my Lugia paralyzed earlier, and was at 68% health thanks to an Aeroblast from my Lugia), Ho-Oh, and Yveltal left. Necrozma-DM was my last Pokemon...but I Ultra Bursted, and my opponent went for V-create, which hit for resisted damage (still roughly around 44% of my health tho). I set up a Dragon Dance, his Mega Rayquaza (who was only at 1 HP thanks to my Mega Mewtwo Y's Nasty Plot boosted Psystrike) went for Extreme Speed, which left me at like 22% health remaining. Ultra Necrozma proceeded to show my opponent why USUM players feared it. I reverse swept his team with a Photon Geyser to finish off his Rayquaza, a Stone Edge for Yveltal, I used Light That Burns The Sky on Ho-Oh, and finished the reverse sweep with Earthquake on Calyrex-S. Rayquaza got me into Pokémon, back in Black/White era. When ORAS hit, I was glad it got the “so OP it’s in its own league” status.
Wild to think I remember the creation of the "banned to quadruple ubers" tier as a part of Pokémon history that I lived through.

Another cool video that would be interesting is how the creation of the AG tier lead to Arceus being ban in it in the 4th gen Uber metagame and the impact of this change
This is why we need gen 10 to include everything, like megas, z-moves, terra crystals, dynamax and gigatamax. Imagine a mega Rayquaza with a flying terra type using dragon ascent
Hear me out: Rayquaza with a Z-Crystal and Dragon Ascent works like Necrozma.
My favourite AG strategy is running six Tapu Koko. It's got such an interesting movepool and can run so many sets! Most people only run one or two answers for X threat, but once those are gone, their team just gets run over.

Miraidon is broken enough that it was in the same round of NatDex Ubers bans as Mega-Rayquaza. While there's defensive "counterplay" in current SV Ubers for Miraidon such as using Ting-Lu + Clodsire, Iron Treads or Blissey to play around, most of these Pokemon become practically unviable or niche fringe options once all these other cover legendaries are added through Home & DLCs. NatDex Ubers (despite its lack of popularity) gives us a glimpse of what would happen, and it's speed in combination with it's ability to create literal archetypes of teams and to drop nuclear eletric moves + Draco Meteor & Overheat makes it simply far too overwhelming. Mega-Rayquaza wasn't the first mon banned from NatDex cause powercreep gen7, 8 & gen9 introduced Pokemon with ridiculous speed tiers + power such as Zacian (tho it got nerfed in gen9 after what it did last gen), Calyrex-S who will likely be the most broken Pokemon of all time when Pokemon Home releases, Koraidon & Miraidon, Ultra-Necrozma (won't be in Scarlet & Violet), Flutter Mane, Chien-Pao (Gen 8 Weavile on steroids) & Iron Bundle who outspeed & threaten it. Ultimately it's still too much tho and Mega-Rayquaza's the ultimate wallbreaker with nasty Extreme Speed to clean teams that hopefully won't come back with Scarlet & Violet DLCs.

Not to mention that it has the option to go special to power through physically defensive mons like Arceus rock, like specs draco will destroy that
Nothing can describe how insane mega Ray was, honestly he kinda needed to exist, if AG wasn’t created then Ubers would be way more unbalanced
That Pokemon and Arceus only changed how the younger generation viewed as the strongest Pokemon. That's it.

These kind of videos are amazinng
While outside of the scope of the video; in some ways there has been dominance to this extent in a tier before, gen 1 mewtwo the only real way to play against gen 1 mewtwo is your own mewtwo. There is even a funny parallel that Mewtwo leading to the creation of Ubers eventually lead to mew getting banned as well where without the precedent of the tier existing it likely wouldn’t have, much like how Mega-Ray lead to Zacian being able to get the boot later down the road
Here’s a list of the most power Pokémon according to nat dex Ubers:
-calyrex shadow
-mega gengar
-shedinja
-miraidon
-mega ray
Yep, all of them were more problematic and banned before may ray was
Mega Ray does have a pretty good counter in the form of Scarf Zacian/Zacian-Crowned. It can still nuke crowned with V-create, but ah well
Mega rayquazza was massively OP, but people also never considered using mega bannette. Legit prankster destiny bond shuts this thing down effortlessly, as well as other threatening mega forms
For Yu-Gi-Oh, there was Invasion of Chaos.
For Pokemon, it was Mega Rayquaza.
And to think this wasn't even the generation where Megas applied their new speed the turn they evolved

Mega Ray : smells like a bitch in here.
When a pokemon gets banned from ubers you know its OP
I've said it before and I'll say it again,
It's "Ray-QUAY-za"
I like the idea creating a new tier ladder for restricted mons with Uber Uber, Uber OU, and Uber UU. This way the pokemon that are way too strong for normal Ubers can gets sent to Uber Uber, and the pokemon that doesn't see play in normal Uber, but aren't allowed in normal OU, can be used in Uber UU.
Weird for this video to be so historical when I lived it.
But yeah, holy shit. Mega Rayquaza was like bringing a nuclear bomb to a street fight.
