In retrospect, that’s how I looked at it, but not at the time. Lol
I think it was Lars who said that if they hadn’t done Load/Reload, they wouldn’t have been able to do what they did afterward.
I rarely listen to those two albums, but it’s cool they did them. It was a bold move, because they could have easily kept doing the same thing over and over, but they would probably sink into obscurity, eventually.

James' vocals on Reload are adventurous, high, and often nasally and exaggerated. They were hard to stomach at first, but I grew to love them. It also took a few listens to warm up to the songs you didn't like. Some background on the recording of Reload, since it can be confusing. The music itself was all done around 95/96 with the recording of Load. However, during a break in touring a year later in 97 finishing touches were put on the songs as well as vocals being laid down. So that's why James sounds different vocal wise from Load to Reload. The vocals on Load were done in 95/96 while the vocals on Reload were done in 97. Hope that helps you guys! Kind of a Metallica nerd. lol. Also, the choking on Bad Seed was a nod to Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath which features Tony Iomi choking on marijuana smoke in the beginning.

2:36:00 The problem with Low Man's Lyric is that it was produced, period. There are videos of this played acoustic (in Korea, I think) with James just sitting in a chair with a guitar and a hoodie and it's much, MUCH better since it's really a personal, emotional song. A lot of that sort of music falls apart as it passes through multiple hands and multiple pieces of equipment (which sounds like a ridiculous thing to say, but a heartbreaking song played live in front of you carries *so* much more with it, right?)
As far as the production on it's face, I'm not sure they actually knew what to do with it mechanically.
Topically... it's about homelessness sure, but because of heavy drug addiction. The voice of the song has had no success breaking addiction and is writing his last words to his family and sending notes to God before, in my opinion, taking a hot shot and just fading out to nothingness.... the slurred last lyrics getting softer and eventually to a hum, and the symbolism of the drone note from the hurdy gurdy continuing as if it were a flatlined ECG.

1:32:56 No, Chris, not Drop-D, just D/Db-standard. Metallica had never used a Drop tuning prior to -Human on the S&M album (and then used Drop-C, etc. extensively on St. Anger). It is a common fallacy that they used Drop-D on The Thing That Should Not Be, but that is easily disproven by watching live video from '86 of them playing the song, as well as more modern live performances of the song as well. Patrick was reading the information 100% correctly.

Another great review and reaction from you guys! ReLoad is definitely the heavier of the two albums. There are quite a bit of clean moments on Load whereas ReLoad is mostly heavier! Another big difference on ReLoad, as you guys mentioned is that James chose to sing with a more nasally vocal approach. Many people don't care for it BUT I love it! James is always trying something new each album! Fun fact: Better Than You won a Grammy 🤣🤣 I'd love for you guys to do a 6 hour video where you compare all the songs on Garage Inc. that Metallica covered with the originals! Also, before the Load albums, all rhythm and harmony guitars were done by James. When they started Load & ReLoad, James took a week off and came in only to find that Kirk had recorded a bunch of rhythm tracks and decided to keep them because they were loose. E Flat tuning was also Kirk's idea and James jumped on board because he could sing one step lower!

I think you should absolutely listen to Garage Inc. Being a double album, the first disc was recorded during and/or after ReLoad. The second disc has recordings from throughout their career going back to like 1984, so you get a chance to hear their production over their whole career in essentially two hours.
Also, saying you don’t know the bands they’re covering is a cop out. It’s not like you knew these songs until you listened to them either.

LOL
P.S. - I said that with all the love in the world, as I love both Load and Reload, as well as the older thrash-ier stuff.

Unforgiven - Tells the story of the young man who’s life if not in his hands, his will being taken away, feeling like everyone has controlled his life. He does what he can to please everyone but it’s not enough. To the point where he doesn’t care anymore. Taken away his will. Blaming the world for the way he is.
Unforgiven II - I understood it like . He’s looking for a relationship and the partner is, who he is blaming now. Like that partner you resent , like the worst parts of them, the ones you hated , are now a part of you.
Unforgiven III - He’s matured, he’s realized that, the blame doesn’t fall on anyone , other than him. It’s no longer , look what the world did to me, or look what you did to me. It’s , I did this.. “ how can I blame you, when it’s me I can’t forgive”
