Any differences in sound on the title track could be because it was recorded after everything else. When listening to the "finished" album, they decided they needed one more fast song to open the album and threw Hardwired together. There's something to be said for that kind of spontaneity. It turned out to be a great song. Sometimes overthinking just bogs you down~

Yeas, his channel, his rules, but it's important to take constructive criticism from your fan base. But, he does tend to talk about shit that has nothing to do with the music he's criticizing and concentrates and repeats nitpicks too many times. How many times can you talk about the snare or low vocals? Etc...He dies make fair criticisms sometimes, but you only need to mention it once and move on.

The "two hours later" gag that Patrick put in the middle of that beautiful break during Dream No More should be punishable by law.
Also, James' wrong pronunciation of "Cthulhu" is deliberate, so as to not say the god's actual name and anger/awaken him by mistake, thus playing into the whole Cthulhu mythos. That's also why they named one of their instrumentals The Call of Ktulu instead of Cthulhu.

Yeah, and I think the spelling of "Ktulu" was intentional to try to avoid being sued over the use of "Cthulhu," as it wasn't in public domain yet, at that time.

I'm seeing people disappointed that this is so far away! Go check out the post on my channel about this video for more details on why we cant do it until next weekend.
The Doors video got taken down just after I posted it (which I could not do unless RUclips allowed me to in the first place) which means that the Doors copyright holders must have a setting for videos of a certain length not containing their music. This is continuing to be a major issue for my channel and will inevitable lead to us only being able to do single song videos.
ONE MORE TIME LETS US THANK METALLICA FOR BEING AWESOME ENOUGH TO LET US POST THESE VIDEOS! The money all goes to them anyway, so why on earth an artist would not want that is beyond me.

Thank you everyone for going on this Metallica journey with us over the course of the year! But fear not, we will still be listening to Garage Inc. and S&M sometime early next year! I want to focus the channel on more than just one band next year, so our plan to start off will be to pick 4 songs each from these bands, ranging across their entire catalogue, and then decide which bands to listen to more of...those bands are: Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Opeth, Ghost, and who knows who else?
But also remember that one of the primary reasons for me having this channel is so that I can react to BRAND NEW albums that are just being released, so that is something that will always be done on the channel as long as we are still around!
Again, thank you for watching and we will see you next time!

Thanks for the shout-out, Chris S. Also, love the jokes about not knowing drums and bass.
This is definitely an underrated album. I'm glad Patrick enjoyed it as much as he did.
Chris P is right about the start of Confusion being similar to "Am I Evil?" which is a song that they did live with members of Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer back when they had the Big 4 concerts. (Though, Tom Araya and Kerry King would typically sit it out in protest because they did not like the song.)
Looking forward to "Garage, Inc." You could probably throw in the "Ronnie Rising Medley," "When a Blind Man Cries," and "Remember Tomorrow" with that video, considering they are covers that just released later. I really dig both of those last two.
"Lords of Summer" is a lot better in the 'First Pass' version that was released earlier. I think it would be cool if you did a short video comparing the different versions of "Lords of Summer" considering it underwent lyrical changes that made it very 'meta' and self-referential for Metallica.
I will continue to profess that you do not need to do the entirety of S&M (1999). James was doing a weird thing with his voice in the late 90s, and it ruins a lot of the classics. But perhaps you want to experience and explore that (like Lulu). "No Leaf Clover" is the best part of the first S&M. And by the way, there are several repeats between S&M and S&M2, including 'Clover.' S&M2 (2019) might even be the better option to discuss in full length video form. (Though, you could potentially skip the orchestra-only parts like Scythian Suite and The Iron Foundry. Not that they're bad, just not relevant to Metallica discussions.) S&M2 features "The Day That Never Comes," "Moth Into Flame," and "Confusion." There is also a different, slower arrangement for "All Within My Hands" from 'St. Anger' on S&M2 that is really, really good.
Nice to see that Chris P provides some comfort for spiders by blowing them four times before putting them out of their misery.

  • @mattlovesdrums25

one comment on the 1:09:30 mark - one constant thing about Metallica records up until Load/Reload, and then starting again around Death Magnetic / Hardwired is that James tracked ALL rhythm guitars (left and right) - but he’s been known to use different amps, guitars, or even blending amps. so it’s possible that the more left prominent guitar you’re hearing on this album is just a more present amplifier that’s being panned hard left!

This was the album that Kirk Hammett did not have a lot of input on the solos. According to interviews, he had over 250 "musical ideas" that he kept on a cell phone that he subsequently lost just prior to recording this album. As a result, most of the solo recording sessions were coached by Lars and Greg Fidelman.

    • @beatmet2355

Solos or riffs? I understood it to be riffs. If you watch any videos concerning solos, Lars is there giving input on solos, even going back to the Black Album. Hardwired is the only album without a writing credit for Kirk on any songs.

It’s a totally different approach to vocals between Ozzy and Dio.
I tried enjoying the Dio stuff, but it’s not for me. Ozzy’s approach has more humanity to it, like he was actually experiencing what the lyrics are about. There is vulnerability to his voice.
Dio sounds like he’s the narrator to a story, or he could be the one responsible for the situation the lyrics are about and is enjoying it from a sadistic point of view.

    A few thoughts.
-Atlas Rise sounds like it took heavy inspiration from Iron Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name... maybe in your own time (or possibly when you do Maiden) you can do Hallowed and Atlas back to back.
-Atlas, ManUNkind, Bone, and Revenge are my personal favorites from this album. The main riff(s) from Murder absolutely rips face, but the song as a whole just doesnt do it for me.
-Overall, while the music is good, to me most of this album feels very forgettable in the sense that i can listen to earlier albums from start to finish and no have the urge to skip... where this album has multiple skippable tracks.
-I saw them live at the start of the Hardwired tour, and as with every other time i have seen them it was a great concert with great audio and visual production. On this tour (and possibly after) they did a long break in the middle of Now That We're Dead where the entire band got together at the front of the stage and played an extended "tribal feeling drum solo" before picking their instruments back up and playing out the rest of the song. Might be worth finding a live version of this song to see how much the live version differs from the studio version.
-Kirks solos on studio albums have become much more improvisational over time. I personally wish he would knuckle down in the studio and come up with a more composed solo for the studio version and then improvise and noodle for the live versions. As an example of this, the solo from The Unforgiven is one that fits and is also insanely memorable where the solo for any song on this album carries nowhere near the same weight or memorability. Kirk also did an interview recently and confirmed as much, saying that he just enjoys more off the cuff and improvisational solos and has basally decided to do what he enjoys.
-A mix of returning to some of the more thrashy elements they are known for and the Load/Reload sound that polarized the fanbase. IMO A good album with some great moments and songs... and (without being condescending) the best the band was capable of churning out at the time of writing and recording. Spit out the Bone was absolutely the best choice to end the album on a high note.

That is the version of the album that a friend of mine gifted me on cassette after he introduced me to this amazing band! lol Therefore, to me, that is also the version of the album I see as "complete," as well. ;-) lol Years later, when I wanted Kill 'Em All on CD, as well, I also sought out an Elektra version to have those songs included. ---
Actually, the whole point of fading-out in any song is to emphasize, to convey to the listener the idea that this is a boundless, neverending tune! So basically it's just an artistic technique of some sort, showing that the song goes on and on, like forever. And there's really no other way in music to express it.

I'm casually listening in the background during work, and I'm guessing that a bunch of other folks already pointed this out. But just in case they didn't, the only song on this album that isn't in E standard is Dream No More! Am I Savage and Hardwired both use regular E tuning on the guitars.
It's not important, but if anyone cares about album tunings and the occasional exceptions:
Kill 'Em All - E standard(ish), no exceptions
Ride the Lightning - E standard, *slightly* tuned up across the entire album
Master of Puppets - E standard, except for Thing That Should Not Be (D tuning)
...And Justice for All - E standard, no exceptions
Black Album - E standard, except for Sad But True (D standard) and The God That Failed (Eb standard)
Load & ReLoad - Eb standard, except for Devil's Dance (D standard) and Bad Seed (C# standard)
St. Anger - Uhhh.... it's all over the place with Drop D-style tuning rather than standard variants lol. Early 2000s metal and whatnot
Death Magnetic - E standard, except for All Nightmare Long (Drop D)
    Lulu - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hardwired... to Self-Destruct - E standard, except for Dream No More (D tuning)
    72 Seasons - E standard, no exceptions

Present Chris, on Now that We’re Dead, when you noticed James’ guitar panning back full left after that part over like 16 bars, what I hear happening is it creeps over there slightly, then on his last high note, it moves faster and fades out into the riff again. Ya’ll inspired me to try out the audio program at my college, and I love when stuff like that happens in music. Also, if I’m way wrong on that, please do not hesitate to correct me. Also, hope you fight hard Patrick!! :-)

Great reaction as always. Even though this is the end of the Metallica journey, highly recommend maybe a reaction for Garage Inc, S&M 1 and 2, and also I disappear. S&M 1 and 2 are similar, they do have some songs from the 1st album. S&M 2 had some from Death Magnetic and Hardwired. And of course it has the acoustic version with strings of All Within My Hands from St. Anger, which sounds great.
Couple of footnotes for you Patrick. Since we both are wrestling fans, as you know over the years, Metallica has been featured as theme songs for PPVs, entrances, and for video promos. From this album, AmI Savage was used for the video package for Triple H and Seth Rollins at Wrestlemania 33. Now That We're Dead was also used at the Undertaker's entrance music for his final match, the boneyard match with AJ Styles at Wrestlemania 36. Another fun fact, Metallica was scheduled to play that song at Wrestlemania for The Undertaker, however that was the covid year, so they didnt get the chance, and just used the song for his match.

I absolutely adore this album. Listening to all Metallica songs was a huge trip for me because my favourite songs and albums changed so much as I heard more. When I only had the songs I already knew, my favourite song was One and And Justice for All was my favourite album (although I only knew about 3 songs, but it was the same with the previous albums). But by the time I got to Death Magnetic, any song in that album felt as good and often better than my favourite songs from the first few albums, with All Nightmare Long becoming an absolute undisputable favourite that couldn't be compared to One despite how good that song is... then I heard Hardwired and the same happened again. All the songs from Death Magnetic that were apparently unbeatable were completely matched in this album, by almost all of the songs as well. I consider both albums and their songs equally good, but as for favourites, Spit Out the Bone is just THE song. I can't put another song above it; just can't. 72 Seasons I also really loved and I like it more than the first few albums but I don't consider it better than the previous two albums.

Awesome video as always guys! So sad that the studio albums have come to an end. Been watching since the beginning! Anyways, here are a few things I have to say:
    1. Garage Inc. disc one is a collection of covers that Metallica had released before 1998 from singles and b-sides, while disc two is a collection of covers that were recorded in 1998 specifically for Garage Inc., so I recommend listening to both discs if you can.
    2. S&M2 actually does have some repeat tracks of S&M. While it isn't many, there are still multiple songs that are repeated from before.
    3. If you're only doing five songs from Slayer, Pantera, Iron Maiden, and Tool, I recommend these five for each in order to get a good span of their discography in there:
Slayer - Tormentor, Angel of Death, South of Heaven, Seasons In The Abyss, and Chasing Death
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell, Hollow, 5 Minutes Alone, Drag the Waters, and Revolution Is My Name (Also throw in some 80s glam-era Pantera if you can, that stuff is fun)
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name, Powerslave, Infinite Dreams, Fear of the Dark, and The Wicker Man
Tool - Sober, Forty Six & 2, Schism, The Pot, and Fear Inoculum (or Pneuma)
Sorry for the novel, just some thoughts I had while watching. Great stuff guys! Can't wait for next year!

Holy shit, I had forgotten how freakin epic Spit Out the Bone is. I did not envision they had this song in them at that stage of their careers. Havoc wreaking song.
I like Hardwired better than 72 Seasons because there are more bangers (for me) than 72 Seasons have who I feel is too repetitive and too "safe" at some degree without a song or two who clearly stands out. Plus to me 72 Seasons is like B side of Hardwired basically. There are so many songs who sounds exactly like something out of Hardwired.
The advantage of Hardwired is exactly that it came 7 years earlier than 72 Seasons not vice versa.
But that said, Death Magnetic still tops Hardwired

Metallica approached John Bush to sing for Metallica back in the day. Bush sang for Armored Saint at the time and didn't want to love his band. If you aren't familiar with Armored Saint, Bush later sang for Anthrax for a number of albums. Great singer and James saw that in him... but couldn't get him, so James resigned himself to singing. Personally, I'm happy it went that way, as Metallica wouldn't be Metallica without James's vocals.

You know, there's so much new music in the orchestra of S&M, while still not technically a studio release, I do think it can wave the banner of "new Metallica".
And I know that it's not as important as Garage Inc. and it won't be wav files but I really think you guys should listen to some old Metallica mixed with more bass -- it really adds a different dimension.
