Considering the fact that Metallica was on the very edge of splitting up during creating this album, James going to rehab, Jason already left the band, Lars and Kirk wondering alone if even Metallica still existed, it is a huge miracle St. Anger ever saw the light.

    • @robertpfeiff

A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica is probably the best documentary I've ever seen on making an album. So much information and great little details, like James cocking a real gun over the guitar riff of "The God that Failed" that you barely hear on the final song but you'd notice something was missing if it wasn't there. The Classic Albums episode was basically a shortened version of the original documentary with some added interviews.

  • @bunkermulligan1
    @bunkermulligan1 Год назад +47

I wasn't thrilled with this album when it first came out, but after watching the SKOM Documentary I gained a whole new appreciation for it after understanding why and how it came about. IMO this is a therapy album where everything gets purged angrily out by every member of the band which is why it was mixed in such a raw way. I feel the same way in some respects to the AJFA album after Cliff's death. That album was therapy of sorts; I was in high school then and remember it wasn't necessarily met with the best reviews at the time (Even James has said in past interviews he wasn't happy with that album) but it has stood the test of time and some of their harder, better songs are recognized from it. It's the same with St. Anger. Granted, I still don't love several of the songs on there but there are more on there that absolutely rock. All in all it's a good album...but again, I appreciate it for what the band went through to create it.
I think they definitely rebounded very well with their follow up Death Magnetic. We won't talk about Lulu.

The scrapped demo known as “Shadows of the Cross” that later became All Nightmare Long from Death Magnetic is pretty cool. It was recorded before James’ rehab situation.
They wrote it in an old abandoned military barracks; only two songs made it to the album from those 2001 recording sessions. Some Kind of Monster & My World the rest of the album was done at their own studio (HQ).

From what I remember hearing about, in interviews and stuff is that they jammed out this album all together, but they also found the best parts of each song and edited them together. Like instead of jamming out the whole song multiple times and taking the best version, they jammed out the song multiple times, took the best parts of each version, and mashed it together in the editing room, and that’s why you have such a differences in the chorus and verses and stuff like that because it will go from one jam session in the chorus to a different jam session for the verse. Know what I mean?

I want to say thank you for shouting out the sale going on with Metallica albums, I juat picked up my own copy of the self title because of it. If you could shout out any other nation wide deals in the community tab that would be awesome, it really doesn't have to be just Metallica either. I would like to watch a reation for ELO, I know its not metal but I would love to hear what everyone thinks of their music. Of course a Linkin Park reaction would be phenomenal as well, any of their early punk-numetal is fine but what I would really love to hear about is some of their later works. This comment is a rambling mess and for that I apologize, but in my defense alot was said in the video and if I made a comment about everything that came to mind I'd be typing a dissertation from now to next week. I want to say thank you for taking all the time you do to make these excellent video, they have made actually go out and buy albums I had always streamed; the difference in quality is astounding, something I had never really paid attention to. Anyway, I wanted to say I would love if you guys hit the theater and recorded a reation to the live shows; I won't be able to because I work both days it shows and can't take time off, but being able to watch it "with" you would certainly more than make up for it. Knowing the circumstances behind the production of this album, it’s no wonder James’s vocals are the way they are. He sounds like he’s reached the limits of his endurance and is at the breaking point. There’s desperation and fear in his vocals most of the time, like things are changing beyond his control and he can’t handle it. Especially the last song. He hates the thought of losing control, even scared of losing control.

I love the rusty-toolshed-on-fire vibe that just eminates from St Anger. I saw some remixes where people "fix" the snare, but it sucks, doesn't feel right, it's like censoring a horror movie.
Like I get it that it doesn't quite sound like Metallica, but they weren't themselves when they made it. I understand the negative reactions as to the moment it was released, because it was hyped up to be something entirely different before that. All these years later, it's like a remnant of a rough patch in Metallica's story. Even then, it kicks ass with how heavy it is. Great video, loved your takes.

2:55:30 Those barracks they rented in 2001 (the Presidio) are not where they recorded the album though. That's just before James went to rehab, then they recorded St Anger at their new HQ in 2002-3. In the Presidio sessions, they recorded some weird demos, some of which went into St Anger (I think Some Kind of Monster and My World, for example), but also a lot of REALLY REALLY weird stuff. If you find St Anger strange, the Presidio Album (ruclips.net/video/4OUkEvznFyg/видео.html) shows a band at their absolute darkest time, doing some experimental weird things.

Hello, special thanks for all the time you have devoted to this and other Metallica albums! Unfortunately, we didn't get to know much about the small things and insider secrets of the sound engineer, but it's still exciting. I have a fundamentally different opinion about the sound of this album, I love it. I especially love the sound of a snare drum without a wire!! This was a brave step by Lars, the sound is much more punk, more primitive, more honest! The album also plays very often, hits the listener in the head, the whole thing is booming. Unfortunately, apart from 3-4 tracks, the other tracks are not exciting for me, but not because of the lack of solos. frantic, st anger are good songs, they sound amazingly heavy live, I was blown away when they played them in concert. The highlight of the album, the perfect track, is SKOM, for me it's really Metallica. The other tension reliever is my world, it was a hit!!! I find it amazing that they were able to write a lot of songs for essentially the same pair of notes: E, F, G, A, Bflat, high E - completely different and fundamental, defining, it's unique!!

I’m the only other person on this earth who liked this album since it came out in 2003. Yes, despite the production, but man, the songs are just so fun, especially to play on guitar. Fun to sing along to while driving, too. Yeah the production is bad, but the drum playing is inspired and the riffs are SO good.
The Unnamed Feeling is unironically a top 5 21st century Metallica song IMO.
Even the production, it was a deliberate creative choice. Did they nail what they were going for? Depends who you ask. I like the album as-is.
Though I’d love to hear a special release or something where they clean up the production and trim the songs ~20% or so as a curiosity.
My hot take. The guitars here sound drastically better than Hardwired and 72 seasons which are undergained and have all the personality dried out of them.
Thanks for the reactions. Still love ‘em.

I loved the "oh I love that" and the "WHAT NOW" shifts a lot haha, that's what you get from St. Anger :D
It's certainly one of the records ever made by Metallica - to me, it the lyrics were always stealing the show. Came out at a point in time for me that gave me a lot of support, I'd say.
And looking back at it now, I still enjoy it. But yeah, seeing some folks that know their stuff about recording and mixing and such, it's a whole new view on it.

@@PatrickMusilek ok. I don't hate it. There are some cool riffs and a couple other elements that are interesting. I do know that Lars' own dad hated it, and begged them to change some things. On the other hand I think that Lars could fart on a snare drum with James vomiting on the mic and Chris Parker would like it because it's Metallica. I don't think it's as bad as I was expecting and maybe if I heard it a few more times it would grow on me. But I think if it never existed we wouldn't be missing anything.

ST. Anger songs are catchy. Cacthiness is what makes a band be famous. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Elvis presley, and everybOdy else wouldn t be famous if it wasnt for their catchy songs. It doesnt matter the quality of the musicians, the song, melody, need only to be catchy in order to make a band be famous.

It's funny you said this album would sound great while driving. That's where I listened to this album the most, and I love it. @biga6664 Год назад

Wow! My friend had a similar experience, his parents had the CD and so that’s how he knew Metallica. I’m interested what your thoughts are on the other albums after starting with St Anger?

    • @floydbanks7
      @floydbanks7 Год назад

@biga6664 so I grew up listening to Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. At 11, I moved to a different state, and my new friends were all listening to Rap. This was around 94-95. So I wanted to fit in, and I forced myself to like rap. I ditched all rock music. 2003 I was out of high school and had new friends at work, and they were all into Linkin Park and other bands, and it really opened my eyes to other music. I'd say Audioslave and Metallica and System of a Down all kicked the door down on Rock for me. So after St. Anger I had people giving me the hits from Metallica, Master of Puppets, One, etc... I clung to their less metal songs, Unforgiven, King Nothing, etc... I would more or less make a mix of the Metallica songs I liked instead of listening to an entire album. Then Death Magnetic changed everything. It blew me away and made me appreciate the more metal songs from them. Oddly enough, when Hardwired came out, I bought the album and NEVER listened to it until 2 weeks ago. I also discovered 72 Seasons was out. So I've actually been listening to a lot of Metallica recently, and I have to say they've moved into my top 5 favorite bands. And I still love St. Anger haha

The ideas for the album are actually pretty good, but the arrangement, performances, and mixing are all awful. I'm not a Metallica fan, but when I listened to it at some point this year, I heard what the album could have been. So I started not just re-recording it, but cutting out all the crap and changing some parts a bit and making the songs cohesive. Watching your video made me realize just how much stuff I actually cut out. Some of the parts that I removed are cool, but didn't add to the song. I think I cut out 20 minutes from the whole album. I should have it done this upcoming year, it's actually coming out really heavy.

The comment about load and reload, if they were not released by metallica, they would be considered to be absolute classics, I think that is true. But the thing is, it wouldn't be considered Classics among the heavy metal guys. At least not all of them, because, at that time, I think some of the metal folks were getting into the more bluesy Stoner Rock side of things, and the bluesy feel of these are absolutely in line with what is now considered the first heavy metal bands.

I remember this record. I had listened to The Black Album, Load, Reload S&M, I disappear and Garage Inc. because my mom loved 90s Metallica but never paid much mind to it and then this was released because I was obsessed with Iron Maiden's dance of death and Megadeth's The world needs a hero and just discovering the joys of metal and I bought the record (digipak tbh) and sounded really bad so I just shelved it. A year later in August 2004 my mom's cousin (which I called uncle) died and it was one of the darkest moments of my life at that point, I was 13 and was really angry with the world and very, very sad.
I remember I just could not listen to any kind of music, but St. Anger just felt right because it sounded like I felt and I fell in love with The Unnamed Feeling. It made me feel like I was not alone feeling like that. Then I watched the docummentary and it was clear why it felt like a painful album. I'm not saying it's a good record, just that it was a portrait of pain and in that it was accurate.
Also, that strange UUUUUuuuuu in invisible kid could have been done by a lead guitar but the "no solos" policy kinda screwed the song up. The album is like, a bunch of great songs messed up on purpose. It's like buying a bunch of cristal glasses and then scratch them up so they become "custom glasses". They are not custom, they are messed up, you messed up.

I know as a suggestion this most likely will come far down the pike but i would love to see you guys go through all of Trivium's albums. Very cool to see you guys like Ascendancy and Shogun. The Crusade gets so much unwarranted flack. Their last 3 albums, The Sin And The Sentence, What The Dead Men Say and In The Court Of The Dragon are so damn good. I really hope you cover their entire discography.
    Cheers Fella's

2:25:23 Never realised it until now, I guess because I'm slow, but "Sweet Amber" is about beer, which is basically a song about him processing his alcoholism, which is why he went into rehab I think just before this album came out? I don't think James had many drug issues, but he's basically an alcoholic. St Anger as a whole, is about him processing his demons which in this case, was alcoholism, and how he used alcohol to avoid having to face his demons such as anxiety, overthinking etc. He'd numb his thoughts and feeling so he wouldn't have to deal with them, and I guess this whole album is him forcing himself to feel it all, hate it all, and process it all. I love that the whole band was able to sonically describe what he was feeling through frantic noise. Anxiety, fear, anger, pain, that's some of the feelings the "Bad" recording induces in people which I feel was intentional to get across the feeling of trying to get off alcohol, and learning how to live life without that crutch, and learning how to live with pain, anger and anxiety without alcohol to numb you down. "Sweet Amber" seems like an ironic look look at "relief" (that only makes this worse for him) "sweet sweet relief"
And now that I think about it, the fact that the Unnamed Feeling, a song about anxiety, follows the song about alcoholism is really fitting.

I'm so glad you're going to listen to the 2015 re-record! It's actually fantastic and really highlights how good some of the songs are once you get past the awful mix of the original. My favorites are St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, Dirty Window, and The Unnamed Feeling.

I was actually impressed how much they could fix it. The original still has my ear ringing from the snare sound. It was really awful.

The vocalist sounds like the guy from slayer too which makes it better considering hetfields strange vocals on this album, I know Patrick liked them but I think they’re my least fav part, although they work sometimes but they used it too much, like the whole Alice in chains dreary vocal thing on reload which is in like..every song on that record.

It was actually the first Metallica album I ever bought, and the first album I ever bought with my own money when i was 12 years old. Just turned 30 and have seen Metallica 10 times now, changing that to 12 times next year. Never stop doing these

There's a few Aussie alt rock/prog bands that have incredible production, but they'll never get any other ppl recommend them. Cog - The New Normal & Sharing Space, Karnivool - Themata & Sound Awake and The Butterfly Effect - Begins Here & Imago. All fantastic albums. The story behind the Cog - The New Normal demos recording process is really interesting, using crystals in front of the mics etc...very weird techniques but by all accounts could've been released as the final album.

I just want to add something if I may,
I saw Metallica in 2003 on their St. Anger tour at the LA Colosseum, and I wanted to say they played the songs from this album just like the album, with no guitar solos but with the drums obviously tuned to a better sound for their live tour so a lot fo the songs sounded better live at that time.
NOW, if you go watch some of their performances of these songs live in the last 5 years or so, on their YT channel, James' voice has gotten so much better and lars' drums sound so good now that they are almost like new songs, especially with the edition of Roberts amazing bass playing. Not only THAT but they ADD GUITAR SOLOS live now, and they rip. All the songs have their own solos now.
