- They are and have been for many years the pinnacle of private aviation, as well as trusty people movers in the sky. Twin turboprops are classy, reliable, and most importantly, fast. All while being way more economical than their modern day competitor, the jet plane.
Twin turboprop aircraft are easily recognizable by their unique design which features, as the name implies, two propellers, typically flanking the fuselage of the aircraft.
How fast do twin engine turboprops fly? The planes that made it to this list of fastest twin prop planes, are capable of reaching top speeds of between 268 knots (309mph) and 402 knots (462 mph).
Not all twins will be able to reach these speeds, although it’s interesting that some single engine turboprop planes can achieve even faster speeds than some twin turboprops.

Back in 1989 I worked for a small commuter airline that flew Piper PA31-T1040s this was a Navajo Chieftain with Pratt & Whitney PT6 turboprop engines. This was a rare airplane that Piper only built 23 of these planes. We once had a pilot making the last flight from Anchorage, Alaska to Kenai in just over 9 minutes. This flight is normally a 25 minute flight. The distance between the 2 airports is listed as 70 miles. I once flew in the 1040 as we called it and we reached 255 knots (293 miles per hour). The only problem was the plane was unpressurized so we had to stay below 10,000 feet. We flew from Kenai to Fairbanks in just over 1.5 hours, a distance of 315 miles. Sadly the airline folded about 6 years later after the owner was killed in a crash where he flew into a mountain side in a snow storm. The airline owned 8 of the 23 built and lost 1 to a crash and had 1 destroyed on the ground by an airport vehicle running into the side of the airplane that almost tore the wing off of it. The piston engine Navajo Chieftain has twin 300 hp engines and the T-1040 turboprop had 2 1,000 horsepower turbines and was 130 knots faster. We had 1 that we called the "Moose River Bullet" because it was 30 knots faster than the other 7 and we could never figure out why as all 8 airplanes were 100% identical.
Just got a chance to fly the Piaggio . Unbelievable. We were at FL 390 ,TAS 385K ground speed over 500K with a big tailwind. And the airplane is unbelievably quiet. I few commercial home on a 737 and couldn’t how noisy it was compared to the Avanti.
The Embraer 120 Brasilia was also regarded as the fastest commuter turbo prop airliner in it’s time.
thanks for the information ...
You left out mu-2's :)
Thanks for the comment, we will fix it soon...
Saab 2000 ❤
Most of your video footage of the Piper Cheyenne is of the Cheyenne 3 with the lower powered P&W PT-6 engines and three bladed props, as originally produced. (Note the exhausts coming out the side of the engine cowling). The Cheyenne 4 has the Garrett 331s with rear exhaust and, mostly, four blades props, unless re-equipped.
When speed is mentioned in knots on some planes, miles in others and of corse some in km/h. its getting a bit annoying.
Forgot the Gulfstream Turbo Commander 1000, 300+ kts
Thank you, we will update it in a new video
Surprised and happy to find my Cheyenne video here ! Miss the Saab 2000 I once flew as Copilot ! Have a Good Day !
Thank you captain ...
Good video
thanks!
Starship is the best, nothing better has been done today
I agree. I was in Wichita when I saw its first flight. I was stunned by how little real estate it needed to take off and land.
The Piaggio outperforms it, l believe.
How fast is the Fokker 50 (F50)??
Nice video
thanks
The Cessna 425 was renamed the Conquest. The Cessna 441 was 20-30 knots faster than the 425 and a much nicer flying airplane
thanks!
MITSUBISHI MU2 Cruise speed: 547 km/h 340 mph BEST
thanks ...
#1 is my all time favorit, don't know when i can buy that?
Soon :)
thanks mate, hope so too@@TechPrune
For your information it is a Conquest 425! When first came out they called it a corsair but dropped it for the name
Conquest for obvious reasons. Need to get your information straight!
Thanks for the information sir...
@@TechPrunealso the Piper Cheyenne 3 and 400LS are 2 different airplanes
Why don't you use knots for airspeed, like almost everyone else in aviation?
as in forget about MPH. |You might as well also quote KPH otherwise
Is this the top or cruising speed?
the top and cruising speed
Do you guys ever listen to your mistakes … real howlers everywhere
Very superficial compilation. Several aircraft models - regarded by their speed - were not shown in this video. EMB-120 Brasilia, for instance, is the world fastest twin engine airliner considering what it really counts that is the cruise speed. Even Dash 8 flies slower at cruise setting. Sorry, but is thumbs down!
Thanks for the comments. We will update it soon!
Idk, I fly the Q at a usual 350ktas during cruise regularly, in descent we are usually just at 375ktas. The EMB-120 max speed is 298KTAS.
@@francoismarcoux512 Nope: EMB-120 Max Speed is 328 ktas. Dash-8 needs high speed cruise to attain EMB-120 normal cruise, otherwise range would be an issue. I like both aircraft a lot anyway. Now, looking forward to the announced Embraer NGTP - I imagine this one will be fantastic!
@@RobertoRMOLA what’s normal cruise on the 120? With CI000 which is long range cruise the Q is at about 285-300KTAS, normal CI008 cruise is about 325KTAS. Yup the next EMB NGTP is going to be awesome. Much nicer cabin if similar to the 190.
