As long as Sanderson is around, I doubt it will become corporate. I have high hopes, but we'll see. Jordan sold his rights badly, something Brandon has not done.
I believe Brandon Sanderson has said on his podcast that he is skeptical of an animated adaptation of his works. He argues it isolates some of the potential viewer demographics, such as the more elderly, and he said he wouldn't want to do that because he remembered getting his mother to watch Lord of the Rings and she was obsessed with Gollem, even though she didn't much care for the larger fantastical elements, and had the LotR been an animated adaptation, all those individuals who found something they liked would never have given it a chance simple based on the fact it's animated. He also said, after the Amazon Wheel of Time adaptation, that he doesn't think 8, or even 10, episodes is sufficient to tell a story as long as Storm Light, so the season would have to be 12-14 episodes that are roughly an hour long per season.
That's prabably true. But what if there were a high budget Mistborn era 1 liefe-action series and a Warbreaker movie before the Stormlight animation? They would advertise each other by connections, post-credit scenes and of course the same actor for Hoid. That would collect far more potential viewers, but also prevent that the Stormlight series is halfway cancelled or never made because it is too long or expensive. Also, the spren are something I only can imagine animated. And different adaptation styles would just fit to the diversity of the cosmere. And if there will ever be an adaptation, they probably would start with Mistborn anyway.
I think the only studio that could pull off a live action is the same studio that did James Cameron’s Avatar. There’s a reason he included clips from the movie, because it’s the only studio to effectively portray a truly alien world and have it be a massive success. I think one of the best things that WoT did was release shorts building the world and the lore. That would be a great use for the interludes, and imo the prologue for the series. The biggest problem with the spren is making them look not stupid. Also, finding some way of communicating the meaning of spren in a visual medium unlike the books where it always just tells you what spren a common spren is any time one appears.
arcane animation style is the key, great oportunity to make amazing fantasy shots and keeping at the same time a serius tone with trong human emotions. Is the perfect style.
The spren would be expensive because every shot would have them. The only dream casting I have is Chow Yun-Fat as Dalinar. And maybe Michelle Yeoh as Navani.
I think the studio that did James Cameron’s Avatar could do it justice visually. But I agree, Brandon has to have full creative control. I’m actually surprised someone in Hollywood hasn’t given Brandon a studio and a blank check to get it done because it would be like printing money.
It should be anime only. A live action would be too expensive and crippling for anyone attempting it. Just the settings will be difficult. Add to that the costumes, creatures, magic, technology, etc. A live action would require high budget for filming and high budget for CGI and effects. Anime will get it done by a responsible anime studio that gets the rightly deserved budget for it and right art direction, etc. Tho it would make it hard for Sanderson to have Production direction, as the best anime studios are Japanese lol.
I don't know exactly why but in my mind the Alethi people are always clearly Indian. After I saw Monkey Man I and the Green Knight, I would 100% endorse Dev Patel as Kaladin, I think he would kill it.
Kaladin is supposed to be tall and 19 years old in the way of kings. I like Dev Patel but he's too old(34) and not tall enough to be Kaladin. All of the main cast have to be played by brown people except for Shallan. I'm Indian and I would love to see an all brown main cast in a big fantasy show, but I don't think it would appeal to American audience. So if we ever get a live action adaptation I wouldn't be surprised if they cast white people as Alethi.
Genuine question. Why do we NEED to have a huge cultural impact if we can just make it for cheaper with animation and ensure it could continue even without an insane profit
So we can get a complete adaption or the rest of the Cosmere adapted. Sanderson talks about it somewhere, but basically he said it would be live action for strategic reasons. Animation would be for his fans, live action would be for "normie" crowd and attract more attention thus Hollywood less likely to cancel it or come away with the wrong message. Hollywood sees the numbers, they don't see the why.
@@aarondubourg3706 but the problem with that is that you need it to be an absolutely phenomenal cultural impact in order to get the whole cosmere adapted. Since it’s for the normie crowd, the numbers need to be astronomically high to justify the higher budget and production times. With animation at least it’s cheaper and faster to produce so even if it’s not an astronomical success at least it might be able to turn out a profit for longer
@@aarondubourg3706Honestly I don’t think the Cosmere as a whole will have a huge culture impact. The realmatic theory would be too obscure for general and casual consumption
@@aarondubourg3706 There are a lot more concepts now, like Connection, Identity, Investiture, Invested Entity, Future Sight, etc. I feel it’s great to geek out about and comes out great on written words, but on screen I feel you’d either need an actual lecture to get through, or significantly dumb it down. It works well in separate worlds, but once you start worldhopping, it gets complicated fast
I've talked extensively with my partner how adaptable stormlight is. Love and agree with everything you're saying. I think the hardest part of getting this adaptation to be good is getting someone that respects the source material take the reigns. There's been a handful of movies/show that give me hope. Dune is a big one. I would love to hear your thoughts on mistborn live action. To me, era 1 is impossible honestly, with era 2 being very hard but doable. Representing all the mental metals visually is a massive challenge.
Live action is the way to go. Some of the action sequences would rule animated, but people are purely thinking of those action scenes. And lets be so for real. The Way of Kings has like... a handful of action sequences. Not enough compared to something like Arcane. We remember the big action set pieces but think back on how much of the series is just people talking. I would also love a series that would be taken seriously lol. I love animation but a lot of people look at animation and just fully ignore it. Citation: Every relative I have over the age of 30. Tbh, the hardest part I can see for a live action Stormlight adaptation isnt the Spren. I agree that really shouldn't be that hard. Or the landscape. Even more than referenced, I remember a video on his YT where he answered that he has already done some for fun location scouting in Utah for the Shattered Plains. I honestly think its the shardblades. A majority of them are these hulking 6 foot tall swords that weigh nothing. (fun fact, the inspo for that is Sanderson seeing big dumb anime/fantasy swords and trying to find a worldbuilding justification to make them functional weapons.) I think an honest challenge would be to give Dalinar, or Adolin their shardblade and have them fight in a way that doesnt look absolutely goofy af. Thats the one advantage to animation. You just dont have that issue in that format. For a real human though? Gotta deal with the fact giving a giant dumb prop sword is gonna look like a giant dumb prop sword unless a lot of hard work is done.
I disagree with the idea of only using one set for the war camps. In the books, Dalinars camp is said to be much more organized, and I’m pretty sure that Sebarial’s camp is laid out for more efficient commerce and trade.
Well yea, but in The Way of Kings we barely see any other warcamps than Sadeas' and Dalinar's, in WoR is where Sebarial's is introduced through Shallan chapters.
I always pictured Bollywood actors for the alethi as they would most closely resemble the in book description. Adolin could maybe be European due to his mixed heritage.
From Brandon's own words I'd say more asiatic Eurasian with usually tan skin is what fits the Alethi(mongols and related such as kehjits, turkmen or uzbekz maybe), as well as maybe some Polynesian looks as well The further west you get the more european the people are, except maybe for the Rishii and Azish Herdazians seemed quasi hispanic to me, and the Thaylen people are described as close to the different ethnicities of india
I haven’t given much thought to starlight casting (other than dalinar should be the big name actor with mostly unknowns everywhere else.) I do think Henry cavil would be perfect for kelsier. Spoilers ahead: And knowing that Kel has presence in stormlight and the future of the cosmere, it will let him stay close to the series for a long time.
The two biggest issues that people are going to have are budget and casting. You pulled the Spren bit from the same conversation about budget that they were having on the same stream so I’m shocked you didn’t include it but Brandon said that the budgets he was being offered at the time made him perfectly content that the Roshar he envisioned could be brought to Live Action. That’s issue one. Issue two would be casting. Well not so much the casting in and of itself so much as the reaction of people one way or another. There are two different ways to cast this and both will get a negative reaction. You could cast the way you SHOULD cast which is cast based on Merit. The best Actor for the role and who embodies the character the best gets the job, period, full stop. This would ensure the quality of the show and would satisfy the portion of the fan base who will actually watch the show, thus making money for whatever network/service it’s on and having a better chance to keep going into the later Stormlight books but you would get the Woke Mob, who’s proven they won’t support things even when they bitch and moan about them, all in a tizzy. The second way you could cast, which seems to be the most prevalent these days, would be to cast in a way to pander to the Woke Mob. This is the easiest way to alienate the fan base who would keep the project alive and is thus NOT what should happen. Knowing the way Hollywood has been working lately and that it isn’t going to change anytime soon Brandon would be better off holding out until Hollywood gives him an ironclad contract giving him full final say on absolutely everything or until he makes enough money that he can produce it on his own… Edit- as far as Fan Casting goes the only thing I care about is that the Major Stormlight characters be unknowns. Characters that make appearances in multiple Series like Hoid can be big stars but I want the characters where this is their Main Story in the Cosmere to be unknown Actors…
It's funny how you people go berserk when "the Woke Mob" dares change something about a character's appearance in an adaptation, but if the character's are already described as non-European then changing them is just "casting based on merit".
@@AClockworkWizard you took the wrong thing away from that particular section of the post. Merit means merit. For example if the Actor who read best for Dalinar is Idris Elba and the Actor who read best for Adolin was Luke Grimes then cast Elba and Grimes. Race had nothing to do with it, which is the real point. Also don’t put the Woke Mob in quotes lol that insults people’s intelligence…
The virgin Stormlight live-action series vs the chad Stormlight animated series in the same style as TLoVM and Korra. A man can dream if he's huffing military grade copium... 😩
I have always said, Analisse Basso would be a perfect fit for Shallan, she is relatively unknown, she is identical to Shallan, and can perfectly pull a slightly unhinged privileged girl that sees herself thrown out of her wealthy position
I am going to be honest, I literally could care less how popular or massive a Stormlight show gets, I want it to be animated. A 2d animated show would be so much better looking, and would be able to actuallly show all the things that make roshar unique! And with how unique the locations of Roshar are (the shattered plains, Urithiru, Alethkar, literally anywhere with plants, not to mention SPREN), the cgi needed for a live action show would be insane and, frankly, look terrible compared to a 2d animated version. Storms, I think a live action show would be one of the worst possible decisions for the show behind making the Blackthorn a good person.
A few thoughts here. First, the VFX cost is still prohibitive according to traditional techniques. However, there's an emerging new VFX method based on AI that could make it possible. This would involve training AI models to create the environment, spren, etc for Roshar then compositing them, instead of linear cost per minute. This does likely mean Volume-like production. Second, it seems Brandon is willing to compromise on structure to a large degree, which means the story could be released in a different order than presented in the books. What if the first six episodes were JUST Kaladin's story from slave pen to saving Dalinar? "Season 2" could then be just Shallan and Jasnah from Kanbranth to "boots". These installments would be cheaper and could even be produced in parallel. Season 3 would be Eshonai and Venli ending with Szeth. Keeping sets, actors, and such contained will drastically keep costs down, especially upfront costs. One final concession on Spren is that in the books it's very unclear how much spren can be seen. If license is taken to make it exceptional instead of commonplace, then a lot of cost could be saved. Even Sly could be mostly narrative voiceover for nearly all of season 1.
As much as it pains me, henry cavil will be a great casting for Amaram, it would make the twist extra painful since no one would expect henry cavil to be such a bad guy.
If you are true to the books this would not work since most characters in stormlight, especially the Alethi are supposed to look Asian.

The 3rd need to be the longest 12 episodes maybe, because Oathbringer had a lot of plot. And the episodes called Oathbringer should be the Battle of the raft.
I think episode 12 also should have the "Dalinar kicks Elhokar to make him highprince of war and tells him that he's gonna be his stepdad" part, instead of it being episode 9.
I don’t know why but through the entire way of kings book, in my mind Kaladin was played by Daniel Radcliffe
Dave Bautista struck me as really weird at first, but the more I think about it the more it actually makes sense.
There are some scenes in Oathbringer he would kill. And kill me emotionally to experience again lmao
"warrior turned philosopher" Dave Bautista's acting career described with three words.
The spren would be expensive because every shot would have them.
The only dream casting I have is Chow Yun-Fat as Dalinar. And maybe Michelle Yeoh as Navani.
I was so mad at your fancast for a minute lol
8:18 I never really imagined spheres to look like that but I suppose it would be very likely
if they want a new GoT they need to adapt the first law trilogy and it would be way easier and cheaper to adapt
Dalinar as Dave Bautistia would be so fucking fantastic ya'll gotta watch that scene from bladerunner 2049
There's zero chance that such adaptation would not dissapoint.
They can only do it in an animated series and under Brandon's supervision. anything less will not be good enough, this series deserves excellency !
I think the studio that did James Cameron’s Avatar could do it justice visually. But I agree, Brandon has to have full creative control. I’m actually surprised someone in Hollywood hasn’t given Brandon a studio and a blank check to get it done because it would be like printing money.
Henry cavil could reasonably play Zahel/*Spoiler* in my mind. but that's out of the scope of this video
Maybe Odium, the amount of white/shin looking characters in the books are low
The the Shattered Plains should be a mix of Canyonland, Utah and the Volume screen
@@seanmei6284 idk about that. Realmatic theory is already a very common trope/ concept, just with a Cosmerr spin.
It works well in separate worlds, but once you start worldhopping, it gets complicated fast
my favorite fancast i've seen is Dev Patel as Kaladin
I've talked extensively with my partner how adaptable stormlight is. Love and agree with everything you're saying.
I think the hardest part of getting this adaptation to be good is getting someone that respects the source material take the reigns.
There's been a handful of movies/show that give me hope. Dune is a big one.
I would love to hear your thoughts on mistborn live action. To me, era 1 is impossible honestly, with era 2 being very hard but doable. Representing all the mental metals visually is a massive challenge.
Another fantasy series I've heard suggested for adaptation is Malazan. Though I haven't read it, there could be some potential there.
I thought Rock acts Rock
Make it an animation like arcane it would be so sick!!!
HEAPS OF DOUGH
(Also, Sanderson needs to be directly involved)
I disagree with the idea of only using one set for the war camps. In the books, Dalinars camp is said to be much more organized, and I’m pretty sure that Sebarial’s camp is laid out for more efficient commerce and trade.
Well yea, but in The Way of Kings we barely see any other warcamps than Sadeas' and Dalinar's, in WoR is where Sebarial's is introduced through Shallan chapters.
The area of the shattered plains is actually based on a real world location, you could go to southern utah
I always pictured Bollywood actors for the alethi as they would most closely resemble the in book description. Adolin could maybe be European due to his mixed heritage.
Aren’t the alethi Japanese inspired? Theylens I believe are basically Indian though.
@@elliotstaveley682 You might be right. I just always picture them as southern / south east Asian because of the darker skin tone
From Brandon's own words I'd say more asiatic Eurasian with usually tan skin is what fits the Alethi(mongols and related such as kehjits, turkmen or uzbekz maybe), as well as maybe some Polynesian looks as well
The further west you get the more european the people are, except maybe for the Rishii and Azish
Herdazians seemed quasi hispanic to me, and the Thaylen people are described as close to the different ethnicities of india
Most of roshar doesn't have soil. I don't know how you could possibly film that
Did you watch the video, he said Visual effects or model work, probably a combination of the two
I haven’t given much thought to starlight casting (other than dalinar should be the big name actor with mostly unknowns everywhere else.) I do think Henry cavil would be perfect for kelsier.
Spoilers ahead:
And knowing that Kel has presence in stormlight and the future of the cosmere, it will let him stay close to the series for a long time.
Great video ! thanks 🏩
Dwain Johnson as Dalinar, and Ryan Reinolds as Wit are pretty good tho...
Knowing the way Hollywood has been working lately and that it isn’t going to change anytime soon Brandon would be better off holding out until Hollywood gives him an ironclad contract giving him full final say on absolutely everything or until he makes enough money that he can produce it on his own…
Edit- as far as Fan Casting goes the only thing I care about is that the Major Stormlight characters be unknowns.
Dwayne The Rock Johnson, as Rock
Duh
Brandon, just start another Kickstarter. We got your back for a 15 episodes Tv series :D
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is my pick for Dalinar.
we need need the space jam-esque crossover from animated stormlight archive and live action mistborn adaptations
When it comes to casting, except in specific circumstances (Szeth, Wit, Ishar, etc) don't use white actors.
Veden are described as white.
Don't worry about that, Hollywood doesn't even cast white actors in European medieval themed shows lol.
fancasting the rock not as rock is a missed opportunity
IMO Cavil could be a pretty good Amaram
remember most of roshar doesnt have grass
Do teh same thing with second book please
Who will have the honor to play Stick?
It is pronounced “Yahs-nah” not “Jags-nah”
Michael Shannon as Dalinar
I could definitely see that
Animation is a big cop out for this stuff. It's like the entertainment equivalent of asking a rhetorical question.
I would love Henry Cavill as Dalinar. I don't think they need to always be Asian
Live action atw.
I mean absolutely no hate for this... but you are clearly not an audio book listener 😆
Due to the pronunciation? I got that as well haha. Adolin stood out the most
Dwaine The Rock Johnson as Rock ffs.
Dave Bautista as Dalinar
Nah I’d rather have mostly unknown actors for the show
shit idea
Batista is slim now
Bautista as dalinar has to be ragebait right?
i always envision Harrison Ford as dalanar
Too bad you don’t know how to pronounce most of the names of the characters in the Stormlight Archive.
Henry Cavill could be ZA’EL
11:47 Dwayne the rock as….. here me out…. Rock
