      Brandon goes on to say in more detail that he will absolutely only approve a production that allows him to be heavily involved. He cites delays in adaptations being from his trying to get more experience with screenplays so he can play a significant role.
      Brandon may be softballing on wheel of time but you can tell he wasn't going to let that happen to him.

      @WARobertsonMMII 2 года назад +15

      @@briand3200 In all fairness there is almost no need to worry about that with Sanderson because he has the same goal. He’s already said that when the Mistborn movie happens Ham is going to be female (I personally think that it should have been Dox but whatever), and the Cosmere is already incredibly diverse from our POV. Most of the characters from Stormlight Archive are canonically dark skinned, Ranette from era 2 is lesbian, and the Reshi King is probably transgender. There will probably be a fair amount of agenda in the movies, and we can’t underestimate Hollywood’s ability to screw things up, but with the level of control that Brandon will have over the adaptation I firmly believe that story will come first.

      Hollywood would rather buy an Arthur out for the movie, show, whatever so they won’t have to follow the writers story and do what they think sales and wins them awards. That’s what keeps movie makers in business. Not what the characters are truly suppose to be.
      The only think that changes current thoughts is how Disney makes movies and season. The season explain the story and movie sales the action. That’s the way to go I guess.

    • @goofywarriorguy2439
      @goofywarriorguy2439 2 года назад +6

      The real power of 'not needing the money' is:
      First he can actually ask for more money because he doesn't need the money. This may seem like the opposite, but in reality it's because he can say no to a ton of cash which lets him ask for a ton more cash. If Hollywood goes to some low income John Doe Author and offer him 60k and that's x2 his yearly salary for the rights to his books he is going to say yes because he really needs that money and he doesn't want to scare them away by asking for too much. But you offer Brandon 1 million he can laugh and say "come back when you can offer 5". (I'm of course just making up numbers here... I don't actually know what the amounts Brandon would actually be able to ask for. But you should get the point.)
      Secondly it means he can negotiate for more creative control because he can afford to give up some money to make sure he keeps the rights to casting or final say on scripts and such. This is usually one thing that most Authors need to give up right away because they just need the cash and so are willing to give up too much control because they need the deal.
      One side effect of being able to command so much money for his works is that they are more likely to get done. If a Hollywood company only pays 50k or so for the rights to an IP, this is such chump change to them that they can afford to just shelve the project if they find it's not convenient for them to make it. They can write that off. But if they have to put up real money just to get the rights, it motivates them to actually commit to the project.
      It also means they are going to dump a lot more into the budget of said project. If they spent 50k for the rights, they can put 500k into the project and if they make 1 mil that's all they need for the project to be a positive investment for them. But if they spend 1 mil+ on the rights, they will need to dump some real coin into the budget too since they need this to be a blockbuster in order to make it a positive investment overall.
      If they are smart, they will also likely want a much more high profile director team to take on the project too, since they are putting so much money into it they don't want an untested newbie when so much money is on the line.

    I am hoping Brandon's books are getting picked up at the right time: after a bunch of successes and flops that both him, the fans, and the studios are all aware this can be successful but that there absolutely is a wrong way to adapt fantasy material that simply won't work. That is: making it cheaply, making something into Game of Thrones that isn't, drastically rewriting the story to somehow make it more palatable to viewers (usually as perceived by execs), trying to cater to what fans are asking for (fans don't know what they actually want/need), etc. I am hoping that Hollywood has seen these bad attempts and has taken notes and learned from theirs and others' mistakes.
    I think because it has taken Brandon so long to get picked up that he might have avoided the surge of bad productions, but at the point where studios still want to do fantasy adaptations and fund them well.
    It is likely that LotR will flop, and I am worried that studios will suddenly drop Brandon's material again. But hopefully neither of those things happen. If LotR does fail, it needs to be shouted out on social media and by critics that it is because of a betrayal of the source material. Because execs forced artists and writers to focus on representation, rather than trying to be representative. By that, I mean they insert token actors in but fail to use their talents, tell a story with the character, etc. TV shows trying to be "woke" and "shoe horn in" representation isn't the real problem (it's the newest fad that companies are chasing, like how 3D animation dominated the PG movie space from late 90s to early 2010s) but not doing anything to actually create a good and entertaining story.

The example of Game of Thrones is illustrative here: when the showrunners ran out of GRRM's original work, the dialogue grew clumsy, the plotting grew convenient, and the conclusion... well, there's been far enough energy spent on the state of the conclusion of Game of Thrones, hasn't there?

      @@Landis963 The difference in this case is, Gaem of Thrones didn't have enough material to fill 8 seasons.
      Wheel of Time has enough material to do 15 or 20 seasons, 400 episodes... and its never ever ever going to be that. At best its going to be 70-80, maybe 8 years. It HAS to adapt and condense and change and do things differently. It's never going be everything the books were, it has to change.
      l don't agree with a lot of those changes, or the over the top gore, overall I give the first season maybe a 5/10, I'm not excited about it. But I do understand the changes. Things like emphasizing Logain more early on or giving everyone but Rand more to do in the first season make sense. Saving the royal family for season 2 makes sense.
      It was always going to have to be a different story in someways. I won't object at all if the show cuts the Morgase plot entirely, for instance. She was a major character that had a lot of chapters dedicated to her, but...
      It's an adaptation. It HAS to cut and scrimp and change. There was never going to be tiem or budget to do the books exactly, so if it wants to cover the whole story it had to start changing course early and often.

      @Nexol13 2 года назад +1

      I’m slightly worried, but only because Brandon has stated that there are things that he felt he got wrong that he wants to do right in the adaptation. The problem is that some of these things he’s claiming he wants to “get right” the second go-round aren’t really problems, just things he perceives as problematic after someone points it out to him.
      Spoilers for Mistborn book 1:
      A good example of something he regrets doing that he hopes is bettered in an adaptation is Vin suddenly being able to control the mists at the end of The Final Empire. He calls it her gaining a new power at the 90% mark because, even if he later retconned in an explanation for it in a later book, it seems out of nowhere. He’s hoping an adaptation will fix that by adding in stories or legends of people being able to control the mists or something in that vein. I agree with this change, as it would make her doing it in the end seem less jarring and improve the story and how it functions.
      Something that he sees as a problem that does *not* need fixing, on the other hand, is having one of the crew members be female in the adaptation. There’s no inherent story problem with having Vin being the only girl in the crew while all the other crew members are male. In fact, it adds a nuance to her arc that would be changed if one of them was female. Vin learning to open up to a group of men is distinctly harder for her because she’s the only girl in the group and she’s still distrusting of one of them betraying her in some form or another. She’s the only girl in what is very much a man’s world: the only reason female skaa aren’t sold directly to the whorehouses is because they could be useful for a job because of their allomancy or feminine charm. The implied fear of sexual assault is very prevalent throughout the book, and while I’m not saying that a woman can’t assault another woman, it’s a much less common fear than a young woman fearing being taken by a group of men around her. Not to mention, when female crew members do show up in book 2, Vin is immediately distrusting towards them.
      If anything, it brings me back to what Sanderson himself warned The Wheel of Time’s showrunner would happen if they went the route they did with Perrin at the start of the show: having a character do something so horrible would mean they would have to be extremely responsible in how they handled him reacting to it, and they ultimately weren’t able to follow through on that. I think Sanderson has good intentions with making one of the crew female, but ultimately I think he’s doing it so that he can appease a very niche group and his own conscience instead of doing it because it will serve the story better. While this IS the sort of thing that could make for an interesting dynamic in a book (where you’d have time to explore the nuances of females interacting as major players in a predominately male landscape), a film has much less time to explore those things, especially when there’s as much plot to unpack in it as there will be for Mistborn. It just seems to be a change done for the sake of change and not because it will inherently be better for the story overall. However, Sanderson is extremely intelligent and will likely have realized most of this by now on his own if someone hasn’t brought it up to him already. I trust that if he sticks to his convictions and makes this change that he’ll have considered the ripple effect it’ll have in the story and write the adaptation treatment accordingly.

Wheel of Time had more changes than I would've liked, and some that seemed strange to me. But as a whole the actors nailed their roles, they told a good story, they brought some nice action scenes and when things didn't fit what did happen in the books, it generally did fit with what could have happened plausibly with those characters in a slightly different scenario. It's also just the first season. Many of my favorite shows have bad to meh first seasons. And Sanderson was involved in that to some degree, and I think they'll also realize the things people didn't like are a lot of what he told them ahead of time wouldn't go well.

      Ellison was a maniac, but his stance on "paying the author" is spot on even now. Self-publishing and small studio production teams become more and more possible every year with technology. Writers don't need Hollywood...Hollywood needs the writer.

      Chicago being made of Steel, New York being half underwater, and of course the travelling city of sand. And I love the crazy, secret weaknesses the super powered have, and the protagonist catagoring them all.

      Animated isn't limited as VFX/CGI is, and US hasn't put out anything as great in that department as Anime have, other than Arcane. If they could strike a deal with studios like Mappa or Ufotable, its gonna be real sick.
      And we need best of best for Stormlight.
