@@BuildOrBuy hey thanks for the reply! And hey, I know this is the wrong video to comment this on but now that you’re here. I found out my ASUS Maximus VIII doesn’t have the 14-1 connector for Thunderbolt 4. If I wanted a Thundeebolt 4 setup, would my best bet be to just buy a compatible board? And if so do you happen to know the cheapest board that is compatible with TB4? Sorry if this is such a direct question I’m just new to the PC Building game. Thanks for all your great content and info!

My question is regarding gpu and cpu compatibility. In this review, I heard you say: cpu cores equal gpu ram. So, let's say, if I had a cpu with 16 cores, I would need a gpu with 16 gb of ram, isn't it? But what would happen if I paired that cpu with a gpu with 24 gb of ram.

      Hi Ruben Sanchez,
Welcome! Absolutely! Thank You! Appreciate Your Comments! I'm honored! That's the Adobe After Effects Multi Frame Rendering CPU Optimization Formula.
      1. CPU Cores x 4 = RAM
      2. CPU Core Count = VRAM
As a starting point! You're thinking an RTX 3090. Good match up! Whatever Your Rendering, You'll have the Processing Power for the Dataset! If You require more CPU Cores then Workstation! How big are Your Render files? What's Your Render engine? Adobe has the best Formula to follow for a Purpose Built Computer! Hope that helps! And remember to get a good UPS! Another aspect of a Workstation would be if You require ECC RAM. Changing one thing, changes everything!

And I'm fully aware that they are said to run hot (as you said in one of your videos), but the rtx A6000 is out of my budget at the moment. Regarding the size of the files that I often work on I would say that they aren't big since I do product design and concept car design as well. I use Alias, Blender, Keyshot, and V-Ray.

How have you found it? Would it be possible to use x2 EGPU (with 3090s) in the thunderbolt ports and have x2 3090s in the PCiE with an M.2 drives I would be doing rendering. if there are any drawbacks i'd have to tolerate would be good to hear from someone knowledgable about this, the material is a bit too advanced for me.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 года назад +2

      Hi@@jagz888,
Welcome! Excellent Question. Great Motherboard. 16 Core CPU. However, For that answer I must ask... First, lets look at this from the GPUs. Do You have the 2 RTX 3090's? Congrats! Second, Let's look at this from the technology perspective. You want to take 2 PCIe 4.0 x16 RTX 3090s and place them onto 1 PCIe 3.0 x4 Lanes. Why not use a Motherboard with 2 x16 Lane PCIe 4.0 Slots electrically not just mechanically? Such as a TRX40 Motherboard which has 2 x16 Lane PCIe 4.0 Slots and 2 x8 Slots, electrically?
Rendering is all about Processing Power. Based on the Adobe After Effects Multi Frame Rendering CPU Optimization Formula which states:
      1. CPU Cores x 4 = RAM
      2. CPU Core count = VRAM.
      Considerations to extrapolate from that...
      1. VRAM: 2 RTX 3090s = 24GBs x 2 = 48GBs. 1 RTX A6000 = 48GBs.
      2. PSU Requirements 2 RTX 3090s = 350 watts x 2 = 700 Watts. Whereas 1 RTX A6000 = 600 watts. A 1,500 Watt PSU vs a 1,200 Watt PSU.
      3. Slot Width: 2 RTX 3090s = 3 Slots Wide? Whereas 1 RTX A6000 = 2 Slots wide.
      4. Rendering software. Not all can or will make use of 2 Video adapters even if connected with an NVLink Bridge adapter.
Hope that perspective helps. Thanks for Asking! Keep Us Posted on Your Progress! Thoughts?

@@jagz888 if you ask me, there is no reason to use 3090s let alone two of them in that sort of configuration. The effective performance would be bad, even if you don't consider in the heavy drawbacks of multi gpu. Big no to any configuration of the sort. Single gpu all the way. Hi timotmon,
Saw Your other message You deleted.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one! B550 Chipset? Workstation features due to ProArt but still a Desktop Motherboard due to the CPU. ProArt is marketed toward Content Creators. Like We mentioned in the previous Video, odd that Vendors are choosing 2.5GbE. Which means at the very least, 2 Computers and a 2.5GbE Switch. Whereas on the HEDT (TRX40) and Workstation (WRX80) Motherboards, 10GbE. Even a separate 10GbE NIC is at $100.00 or was before this mess. Agree, for the Network, who has 1GbE yet!?! We can dream! And yes, one could install a Mellanox adapter if they had the Resources which they do not hence this is not a Workstation. This is maybe a 3 to 5 year Computer. Right now, 16 Cores! 8 Years ago, 8 Cores. That's it! Perception and Perspective!
      ASUS ProArt - www.asus.com/us/proart/
Appreciate Your Input and Comments! Thanks for Watching!
      Your next message...
Lots to cover in a short amount of time to make the case For and Against Building with this Motherboard. Thank You, I think. Content Creation could be Audio and or Video. Each is different but not mutually exclusive but prioritized accordingly. Since doing this Video, there are others who want to help and participate with the research on the DPC Latency issue. That may be several Videos due to the nature of the beast...
The second Channel is for Behind the Scene, as You have noticed that's having to wait right now. That's about the Gear to make this Concert of BuildOrBuy a reality of what You see, what I say and what I'm doing. Appreciate Your Input. We have more lights, in a box for a Behind the Scenes Unboxing. Which will take 1 week to stage that. Then Film and implement. Going to have to just implement. Time...
And I literally have to hibernate to Film! On to the next Video, Beginners Guide to the History of Capturing and Streaming! How's that? To reiterate, Appreciate Your Comments! I bought this motherboard that was recommended to me so i could use my UAD apollo solo on my windows desktop (wich is way more powerfull than my laptop). Last 3 days i did everything with software, drivers, connections,... nothing works and i keep getting sound stuttering when using the audio interface. After 2 minutes sound cuts off and videos don't play anymore. Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4. Audio, OK. PCIe Tunneling? Thunderbolt 4. Lots to consider. Lots of options with Built-in obsolescence. Look at Your options and weigh the outcome. Loved this full overview and thorough explanation! 💚 I just bought this board because of its gorgeous appearance and because it provides all the essentials for my video editing needs. Though I would have preferred 10gbe ethernet over thunderbolt 4 since I don't yet have need for thunderbolt 4.
It hasn't arrived yet so I'm Still confused about the Pcie resource lanes though. I currently have an 'old' Pcie 3.0 m.2 ssd, if I ever got a Pcie 4.0 m.2 ssd (while using a rtx3090 graphics card inserted) would I be able to run the two m.2 cards as well as the graphics card all at full lane speed?
And what if I want to insert a 10gbe card and/or a Bluetooth card 🤔
Lastly, the display port in confuses me. I'm not using an 8k monitor but my 3090 card can run 8k. On Asus' website you should be able to use two thunderbolt 4 ports for one 8k monitor or 2 4k monitors using each port. But you say on only one port exports video.
It's also strange that then the motherboards hdmi 2.1 out only goes up to 60hz whereas with 2.1 you should usually get 4k 120hz. Seems like I'm better off just exporting video straight out of my gpu to monitor(s).

      Hi Mike0193Azul,
Welcome! Thank You very much! Appreciate Your Comments! Yes, beautiful design choices! Thunderbolt 4 on AMD is the number one reason for this Motherboard! Agreed, 10GbE, absolutely! Makes more sense. However, slim pickens on PCIe Resources. And that's why they made that design choice. 1 PCIe Lane for 2.5GbE vs 4 PCIe Lanes for 10GbE. Bummer right! More on that PCIe Resource issue below.
You can use both M.2 NVMe Connectors but if You do or did, to gain something, You lose something else. Not having a Wifi & Bluetooth card is an advantage for a Digital Audio Workstation for that type of Content Creation. Due to DPC Latency, that would be the first things to turn off to prevent stuttering. Windows is not a real time O/S. And the constant polling of Devices, creates timing issues.
      ASUS ProArt B550 Creator
      www.asus.com/us/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/ProArt/ProArt-B550-CREATOR/techspec/
      1. ** PCIe 3.0 x4 will be switched from Thunderbolt 4 to PCIEX16_3 if the slot is populated; by then Thunderbolt 4 will have no output.
      2. *** These PCIe x1 slots share bandwidth with M.2_2, which runs at PCIe 3.0 x4 by default. You may go to BIOS setting to set M.2_2 to PCIe 3.0 x4 or x2 at will.
      3. Appears both Thunderbolt ports provide Video from reports We've received. That is not indicated by the PDF nor the Block Diagram. Which means there's a Splitter on that Incoming Display Port Video Resource. Which is very interesting.
The only way to acquire more PCIe Resources would be to utilize a different chipset like the TRX40 (HEDT) or WRX80 (Workstation). Change one thing, changes everything.
BTW: Many Users are experiencing 5950x WHEA Errors. Appears to be power related. Furthermore use RAM with Micron Chips! Unless You opt for Samsung B die RAM. Higher quality RAM.
      4. Step through the Bios Updates. Do NOT skip any! Updating the Bios Firmware also Updates the CPU AGESA Code.
      5. Set Power parameters to High Performance. Never sleep anything!
And when You Build, keep it Simple! No Add in Cards until up and running.
      Driver order:
      6. Motherboard Chipset.
      7. Video Card Drivers.
      8. Thunderbolt Drivers.
Display Port IN - To Route Video into Thunderbolt. Crazy right. Why not just plug Video from Video Card directly into Monitor. Makes more sense. You have an RTX 3090, Congrats! How wide? That might be a problem if more than 2 Slots wide.
Thunderbolt does 3 things. Data Delivery, Power and Video. On this Motherboard, Video has to be ingested from the Video card into Thunderbolt hence the Display Port IN connector.
Hope that helps! Did I miss anything? Success on Your Build! If You need any help, let Us know. Thanks for Asking!

      @BuildOrBuy  3 года назад +1

      Hi jagz888,
Anything is possible. But practical? The ASUS B550 ProArt only has that 1 PCIe x16 Slot electrically. Look to Your previous Question for that Answer.
So now We're talking about 4 RTX 3090's. Correct? Better off using 2 RTX A6000s. Better use of Resources. That would require a WRX80 for the Slots. However, with 4 RTX 3090s, those now need to be 2 Slots Wide instead of 3 Slots Wide. Running out of physical space! You still need 2 x16 Lane PCIe 4.0 Slots, electrically. That works in the TRX40 for CPU Cores and PCIe Resources.
If You were using 1 RTX A6000 with 48GBs VRAM, this ASUS ProArt B550 with a 16 Core CPU? Not a good match. 16 CPU Cores = 16GBs VRAM. You would want at least a 32 Core CPU based on the Adobe AE Formula We've Outlined. And to reiterate, that Formula is a starting point! Hope that helps!

Which Model? You may have to cycle through some of those Thunderbolt settings for proper Configuration. The Memory Apertures are labeled differently than what We've seen before for Devices to connect and stay connected. Those may need to be increased. Thunderbolt MMIO Resource. No way to change the Value in Memory size. Only Full, Half or Three Quarters. Odd setting. The RTD3 is Runtime D3. A Power Saving mode. This is all High Performance. That could possibly cause grief. Don't use Power Saving mode for anything! Not even Your Power Profile! Yes, there's a Thunderbolt Wake Up command. Keep it Simple. Keep Us Posted! Thunderbolt is finicky. @@BuildOrBuy Some updates. 1. installing each version of the BIOS updates in order seemed to have triggered a Thunderbolt firmware that I had not experienced by just jumping to the latest, that I can recall. 2. The reason TB was not showing or registering was due to my UAD2 Octo PCIe card being in the PCIE 3 slot (bottom slot on the mobo) which shares a bus with the TB controller. Hi D•ACE,
Welcome! Absolutely! Thunderbolt 4 (4 PCIe Lanes) on AMD and 16 Core CPU Build, is a great Computer for the money! However, for a DAW, WiFi anything would have to be turned off due to DPC Latency. But if Wifi 6 were a necessity, then adding a WiFi 6 PCIe Single Lane Card would be doable. And another M.2 NVMe would require 4 more PCIe Lanes. Not enough PCIe Resources to go around. Tough calls. At least Users will know about the trade offs before they Purchase if they watch this Video.

      1. PCIe 3.0 x4 will be switched from Thunderbolt 4 to PCIEX16_3 if the slot is populated; by then Thunderbolt 4 will have no output.
      2. These PCIe x1 slots share bandwidth with M.2_2, which runs at PCIe 3.0 x4 by default. You may go to BIOS setting to set M.2_2 to PCIe 3.0 x4 or x2 at will.
Should not be that way but with limited PCIe Resources, it is what it is. Great Motherboard for Audio. Due to DPC Latency, will still require tweaking but since no WiFi, one less thing to disable! Hope that helps! Thanks for Asking!
      BTW:
      1. Appears both Thunderbolt Ports send Video to both Ports. Which means there's a Splitter not noted in the Diagram!

You have the Gigabyte Vision D-P B550 Motherboard.
      www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550-VISION-D-P-rev-10#kf
Not necessarily, You may need a Bios Update. I know, it's brand new. What Bios version do You have? We have found Thunderbolt to be very finnicky in the specifics of order of Drivers. And We always test Thunderbolt with USB-C connectivity first. Then Thunderbolt connectivity. Did You approve the Device from the Thunderbolt Control panel? If Thunderbolt does not show up in the Device Manager, then there should be a Driver with a Question mark. What do You see in Device Manager?

      Hi Shannon Bailey,
Good to hear from You! There's a strong possibility since this is the only Solution for Thunderbolt 4 on AMD that We are are aware of at this time. We thought there was going to be a new announcement from AMD on the 5000 series CPUs. That tuned out to be much ado about nothing. Therefor, 16 Cores stands. As to when, crystal ball forecast. We still need Video cards or else We start cannibalizing other machines!
We're talking to another Subscriber about DPC Latency. And that needs to be addressed. Are You considering doing a Build on this ASUS ProArt B550 Creator Motherboard?

I was, but optioned for the WRX80 this go around, but did strongly consider the B550 build.... I could still build it as a General puropse Video Editing PC that will allow me to use the Adobe Suite....

      Hi@@shannonbailey8515,
I can make a case for any of the 4 Levels of Computer System Builds for a purpose Built Computer. As far as PCIe Resources, the WRX80 is front and center! And for Thunderbolt 3, Gigabyte! If We could just get the other Components! Sounds like You're having better luck on that than We are! Keep Us posted on Your progress! You could do Dual Boot on that WRX80 if so inclined. Just a thought. Personally, I prefer a separate Computer which means Building 2 Computers! And there We go again!

      @BuildOrBuy  3 года назад +1

      Hi Shannon Bailey,
Excellent Question. Based on the Specs and what We're reading, ECC Ram should work but in non ECC Mode. Only way to know is to test and verify. We should have regular RAM on hand just in case. Thanks for Asking! DDR4 128GB kits are getting ridiculously expensive right now.

I found a 128GB kit of ECC RAM at 3200Mhz ( 8 Dimms ) on Amazon from Nemix RAM at about $670.00 I check with Kingston first, as I have a WRX80 Motherboard on the way from Gigabyte, and the Threadripper Pro 3955WX CPU, I will be purchasing that Nemix Kit ( RDIMM ) next, along with the AMD Radeon Pro W5500 GPU for now, until the NVIDIA RTX A4000 that has ECC Memory is available.... based on what I could find that card should be priced at around $1,500.00 when it becomes available.... I could option for the new Radeon Pro W6600 GPU from AMD when it comes available, but I will be seeking the RTX A4000 card before the AMD card.... The Radeon Pro W6800 Card which also has ECC memory will be priced at MSRP for around $2,100.00... I will be posting videos of that new upgrade to my former Threadripper build soon ( Lord willing ).... I plan on using the same Seasonic GX1000 powersupply, NZXT Case, and NZXT X73 Liquid Cooler.... for now, as that cooler has proven to function well, as we also mentioned it's more about functionality, rather than Aesthetics ..... I am also considerning Linux Ubunto Studio as the OS, vs Windows as Windows just seems to really slows down my computer, and interfere with some of the software I use, I believe we talked about that before too...thanks for the Reply

Thanks again for your reply, yeah I don't know about NEMIX either, but based some forums I have come across, some people have found it works just fine, others claiming they had a dead stick in their kit.... So, I have been looking at Kingston again.... I know that I am able to purchase the ECC Ram sticks from Kingston, but individually, not in a kit,..... which means I would have to order 8 separate sticks, instead of a all in one kit.... Now I am trying to determine, do I want Hynix or Micron, what density, what die..... I'm just trying to get it right the first time, and I also noticed that 3DS RDIMM is supported on this board.... Don't know which route to go on this one....I haven't found enough info on Gigabytes website about this, and I am still searching online for direction on this one....256Gb has become more appealing as well, as opposed to 128gb....but its substantially more expensive by comparison, like 3 times the cost...Yeah got the CPU in today, the Motherboard is suppose to be hear Wednesday.... Still will need to get the GPU, and RAM in though.... I will probably order the GPU later today, and will look more into the RAM, before spending anything on it....

      Hi NevadaScrubJay,
Welcome! Remember, this has Thunderbolt 4 built on to the Motherboard. It's ASUS and ProArt. Agree, would have thought ASUS would have aimed higher on the food chain. But for Thunderbolt 4 and a 16 Core CPU, it's better than the Intel Z570 with a 10 Core CPU! But it's NOT a HEDT! The ProArt line looks great in paper. Let's hope ASUS will step up and ramp up! Appreciate Your Comments!

@@BuildOrBuy New news... Asus yesterday announced a new X570 Pro Art Motherboard. I have yet to find it online or on their website. I am not sure what the "Pro Art" mb does other than thunderbolt and more fast USB interfaces. My guess is that has limited/diminishing returns unless other peripheral are much faster. The AMD A5 chipset with next gen memory and PCIE would make that a difference. Faster RAM and a the new AMD Ryzen Pro Gpu that is coming about Sept/Oct will do something. But, my opinion is that the Asus "ProArt" at present is snake oil. I have done this research because I am looking to do a build for one of my adult daughters that is an employee at Arizona State and does online web stuff at ASU. Her team also has contracts with NASA and MIT. Do to Covid she works at home and primarily uses the University supplied laptop that I consider to be junk.

      Hi@@NevadaScrubJay,
Very interesting. Have not seen anything on that yet! Only AMD A520 Chipset. Thanks for Sharing! Let Us know When You know more! AMD on a new Chipset will be 12 months after Intel releases their new gear. AMD Ryzen Pro CPU? Threadripper III 5000 series? Or AMD Radeon Pro GPU? The 32GB version? The ASUS ProArt on paper looks good, but! ASUS has to do better than the B550! That was about Thunderbolt 4. Just a teaser! Even the x570 is short on PCIe Resources!
If You had to Build Right now, consider the TRX40. PCIe 4.0. If You wait on AMD for PCIe 5.0, that's 12 months off, minimum.
I hear where You're coming from! OK for Browsing. Forget working with it or on it! Slower than Christmas and not half as exciting!

      Hi@@BobbyAxelrod1,
OK. Options... You can Build a 16 Core on B550 or 24/32 Cores on TRX40. A 3 year or 10 Year Computer. Music on AMD - ASUS ProArt B550 for Thunderbolt 4. Or Gigabyte TRX40 Designare for Thunderbolt 3.
      1. You need a 2TB NVMe Boot Drive if using Virtual Instruments. If You start with a 1TB, You can Upgrade in a year or so to a 2TB.
      2. Storage, a spinning HDD. We use Enterprise Drives. Less expensive in the long run. Also 2TBs.
As long as You do not need to add or upgrade anything, the ASUS ProArt B550 will be fine. If however, You want to ADD anything internally, that changes things due to PCIe Resources. Perception and Perspective. Hope that helps!
