    In 2019 the ASRock B450 HDV Rel 4.0 has caught my eye, especially the $59 price. Since that time I use it happily with a Ryzen 3 2200G. A CPU not on the list of CPUs supported by Windows 11. A reason to be even more happy and use the 2200G for as long as possible.

    The X570, for reference: also fanless, +1 m.2 , +2 SATA (cannot be used if 3rd m.2 is in pcie mode), no SPDIF out, no PS2, no PCIe x1 slots, more USB outs, one of the 2.5G is 10G Aq instead, Wifi 6E, and the shield is much bigger. Also, the new M.2 shares 16x total bandwidth with first two PCIe slots. Configurations 16/8+8/8+4+4 for pcie1,2,m.2. The last PCIEx16 is 4x.
    Manual also states the pcie1-2-m.2 group support bifurcation 'for raid on cpu function".

    I would imagine the idea is that you'll use to the Thunderbolt ports to power a dock or something similar, but I do feel like there aren't as many Type-A ports on the I/O of the board. Maybe I'm just weird and like having a metric butt ton of inputs on my boards.

    Would it be too much to ask for a mobo like this in mATX form factor? If i have to carefully select my peripherals, then I don't need that many physical connectors on the board if I can't use some of them in particular cases. I feel like this board would make a lot more sense in mATX form factor because you can fit all those features in that form factor.

    Another note from someone testing this motherboard for a while: You can remove that stupid acrylic plate that is screwed to the chipset heatsink.
    (I know this is unlikely to be an issue with B550 but I consider it extremely “distasteful” to insulate a passive heatsink with plastic)

      I’d say it all depends on if you really want to use KVM-IPMI: If not necessarily I’d go with the ASUS or maybe try adding an aftermarket IPMI solution. I haven’t personally gone back to ASRock Rack since the X470D4U debacle for motherboards, but I got a few PAUL KVM-IPMI AICs for the use with consumer motherboards. To this day ASRock Rack hasn’t responded to me about PAUL firmware updates, was lucky enough to get one through the vendor.
      After typing these experiences my gut says to still stay away from ASRock Rack, stuff like them manufacturing the dual 10 GbE variant of the motherboard with the Intel X550 NIC in debug mode doesn’t exactly help regaining my trust (cp. the L1T forum thread).
      So far I’ve not had a “real” issue with the ProArt B550-CREATOR, just general drivers stuff that’s annoying when using Windows with it (unkown USB controller device that needs a driver from Microsoft’s update catalog, Intel’s strange Thunderbolt driver package installation ritual, AMD chipset RAID1/10 with extremely poor sequential write performance triggered by unknown circumstances).

    • @Mico605
      @Mico605 3 года назад +4

      In theory the cover would allow the heatsink fins to act as an air tunnel. When motherboard is oriented vertically hot air would run upwards and it would pull cooler air from the bottom side thus creating passive airflow.

    • @abavariannormiepleb9470
      @abavariannormiepleb9470 3 года назад

      Yeah, nope - these indentations are much too small to be used for passive convection (cp. the larger distance between the fins of the new Noctua NH-P1 passive CPU heatsink compared to regular ones) and air flow even from slowly operating case fans overpowers convection in computer cases anyway.

      Personally, I do some very GPU intensive work, so ideally I like my motherboards to support multiple GPUs and keep the option to put in a 100G Ethernet card which can saturate a PCIe 3 X16 Link (or a PCIe 4 X16 Link for a dual port card) but I don't think you'll ever be in the position to connect to a high performance computing cluster (or its storage system), so my Problem is very specific. You'll be happy with the Asus Pro Art, don't worry about it.

    I really wish they did this board in a mITX form factor with all of these bells and whistles, including rear ports, besides the multiple pcie slots found here... It'd be unique then, as next mITX AM4 board to be interesting seems to be the rumored Gigabyte X570SI Aorus Pro AX (the X570S mITX refresh with more of a heat spreader contraption for the chipset and VRM section), since we generally lack quality and quantity of rear ports implementaton, or features such as these found on creator or overclocking lines in the ATX dimensions, on the SFF boards.

    The Thunderbolt sharing IOMMU with the chipset is inexcusable and deal-breaker. Even on my laptop I can passthrough the Thunderbolt to the VM (for a firwire audio interface).

      you mind explaining what that means? i just purchased this from amazon. thought i'd take the risk since they have a good return policy and i really want integrated thunderbolt, and while most complaints i've seen is just about the price even though that price should be expected with thunderbolt, i have still come across some dodgy reviews making me a little concerned im going to be hugely disappointed.

      @@SuperSaiyanScandinavian It's only relevant if you are running Linux and want to use the thunderbolt inside virtual-machines. Or if you are a big corporation and worried about security risks.
      Basically, it boils down to that there is no good 'device-separation' (IOMMU) between the thunderbolt connection and other devices on the chipset (like SATA, ethernet), potentially allowing a device connected to the thunderbolt to read the memory of the other devices (security risk) and not allowing pass-through of the TB to a virtual machine without passing-through the whole chipset.
      Things like this (poor chipset design) have been a long-lasting problem with AMD chipsets, and one of the primary reasons I'm still on Intel

    beware that the bandwidth is not just shared by the last pcie. It is either pcie or thunderbolt. If any card is installed in the slot, thunderbolt is disabled. That means that If you want to keep the main slot at 16x there you can't add any other pcie cards !!
    i went with the x570 pro art creator instead. TB is independant from the slots on this one !

      Have you looked at the IOMMU groups? On the B550 board, all chipset I/O is in a single group (15). Furthermore, I would like to know, if there is an option to select the discrete graphics card to boot from, in Gigabyte BIOS the option is called Initial Display Output. The user manual for this board does not mention all the BIOS options, unfortunately.

    How to handle Intel’s latest Thunderbolt drivers - also on this motherboard:
    1) Don’t let the system be connected to the Internet
    2) Decompress Intel’s latest Thunderbolt drivers package
    3) Manually install all the Thunderbolt .inf files in the decompressed folders
    4) Reboot
    5) Connect to the Internet so that the Thunderbolt management GUI software can be automatically downloaded from the Microsoft store
    It sucks but I’m done fighting with it.

    So what happens if I put two 3090s in there? Will the Board be a bottleneck?

    • @astarothmarduk3720
      @astarothmarduk3720 2 года назад +1

      If you want to use 16 lanes for both cards, you need a TRX40 chipset and Threadripper CPU. With B550 or X570, two graphics cards are connected with PCIe 4.0 x8. Normally, this is acceptable, but the 3090 is the highest end graphics card available, and the performance loss can be noticeable.

    • @Robinbobin
      @Robinbobin 2 года назад

      @@astarothmarduk3720 thank you! I think the loss would be aprox. 4% per 3090... but I've also learned that by the time I need the performance an upgrade might make more sense anyway

    A X570S version with 10Gbe would be nice, but please keep the PS/2 port. ASRock has the "almost" perfect X570 Creator board, but it has its quirks and is a bit dated now. Maybe they'll update with with X570S and a TB4 controller.... or not.

    • @NJRoadfan
      @NJRoadfan 2 года назад

      aaaand Asus clearly listened. There is a ProArt X570-Creator on the way with 10Gbe! Supports slot bifurcation so you can use an additional M.2 slot off of CPU. No chipset fan too since its a X570S design.

    Very thorough overview, your videos are extremely helpful!
    I just bought this board 💚
    Do you think this motherboard will work find with a 5950x that I bought and a rtx3090?
    I heard that some people had WHEA errors with their 5950x.
    The gpu is a EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 ULTRA. The spec sheet on newegg says (11.81" x 5.38") and (2.75 Slot). Do you think it being "2.75 slots wide" would be a problem fitting into the motherboard!?
    One last main concern I currently have is the RAM. I purchased 2x32gb 4000mhz cl 18 Trident Z Neo ram (Model F4-4000C18D-64GTZN). My worry is that model number does not show up on Asus' website:
    (www.asus.com/us/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/ProArt/ProArt-B550-CREATOR/HelpDesk_QVL_Memory/)
    I was hoping i'd be able to run these at either 3200 cl14, or 3600 cl16 or maybe even cl14, though I have never customized ram speed and timings before. I wonder if my ram cards will work or if I should exchange them immediately for something that shows up on their website? Although the supported memory models listed on their website don't seem to have optimal fast cl timing options when it comes to 2x32gb Trident Neo cards.
    I was between this board and the Gigabyte Vision DP and the Asrock x570 Creation. The x570 Creation seemed to have all the bells and whistles including 10gbe but the design of this board and i/o colors, off the bat Zen 3 compatibility, and intrigue over the "crystal sound" won me over.

    Asus historically has had godawful Thunderbolt implementation on their motherboards. The best example I can think of is the setup Linus Sebastian was trying to do in his home with the keyboard, mouse, and monitor hooked up via thunderbolt to a faraway rack unit. With an Asus mobo it was giving him nothing but problems, but the moment he switched to Gigabyte (IIRC) it all worked great.
