Stunning colour, by far the best built model is the e39 BMW, when they were at their height of design, engineering, understatement and quality.. Find a good one a 3 litre M54 and it will last you years.....
The 530Ds with the 3 litre M57 turbo diesel engines are nearly bombproof and easy to DIY maintain. I have two 2001 530D tourings, one auto the other manual, with 170,000 miles on them.
Very few problems, the main ones being the odd occasions I have had to get a certain dealer to do work on them. The work they did was shoddy, took far too long and in some cases unsafe.
I have used half-a-dozen different dealers over the past 35 plus years and they have all been excellent except for this particular one.
Ryan is BMW’s SCIENTIST!!
Wow. I wish there were videos like this for the E36 retrofits.
Insane work! Wish there was a video like this for every available option on the E39 so you could do a couple of retrofits at the same time since taking all interior apart always takes time etc
This would be a great time to retrofit navigation, the rear sunshade, rear fog lights, a hard-wired auxiliary input, automatic headlights, and heated seats. I have DIYs on several of these on the channel.
Excellent, I am planning to retrofit mine with PDC in the back and this is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
Just as I was thinking of doing this, absolute GOAT.
Woah didn’t expect to see a new vid so soon. Thanks Ryan. 🤙🏼
I've got a few lined up!
Incredible work. Ryan, this 540 is uniquely beautiful, now that it's been in your possession; and, it's probably one of the nicest 6speed e39s out there. Love it!!!
Thank you!
Wonderful video as always Ryan! Looking forward to more great material. Greetings from M5 owner Sweden
Thank you much!
Another interesting, engaging and informative video. I know that creating these takes a lot more time and effort than most people are probably aware; time that could be spent making money by servicing other cars. So thank you for bringing us along!
I’m looking into retrofitting heated seats to my 03 540i. I imagine the project would be similar to this, the primary differences being a wiring loom that connects under the seats instead of to PDC sensors and sourcing a switch panel that includes seat heater switches. I would of course also have to commission an upholsterer to add heating elements to my Sport seats. Your showing this retrofit makes it seem manageable: lots and lots of steps done one at a time but none of them particularly complicated. Well done!
Thank you so much Jay! I really enjoy making these videos and providing these resources for the community, though they do take me away from other more lucrative projects, so thank you for that recognition and support.
I hope to be doing a heated seat retrofit on this 540i in the future... just have to wait for the right set of seats in good enough condition to come available. The process is indeed very similar, and I have actually done that retrofit before for a customer. It was a 2001 or 2002 530i that was completely base, so we had to run the power cables to the SZM and install a fuse for it in the glovebox. The job wasn't too difficult at all, just several hours of time to make all of the proper connections. I think most of life can be much easier when viewed in smaller, bite-sized steps.
Absolut fantastic job sir!
Wonderful video as always Ryan!
Waow what a nice job you have dun, I like your videos because I hav an E 39 from the year 2000 and I like them a lot, this model are the most beautiful Beemers ever.
did DIY S677A DSP last month in Touring..... Big work, but it was swap from my older touring , now swap heated seats ;)
Did you have to change the entire harness?
@@E39Source yes, it is a 3:4 screen , it is the BM24 modul in trunk that give information to 3:4 screen , speaker in rear doors, one medium added in front doors , tweeters are different to.
all the speaker wires start from the amplifier so in every door you have to ad 2 wires ,
the best way is to build out the DSP harness from the car
if the car have GPS to with tv module you have to mount them to, otherwise it will not work , they are all inter connected
@@E39Source only if you had stereo. Anything else depends on mid or tv is needed. I did hifi mid to dsp + tv only had to wire tv wires from front to back.
I dont own an e39 and i still watched the whole thing ,it is very educational to any wiring you need to do to any bmw (i have the E66) ,So thanks a ton . And that is quite the beautiful collection of e39s you have in your shop :D
Thank you very much!
Wow that is a big job!!! Fantastic video, great camera work and detailed explanation of the process.
Thank you very much!
No thank you Ryan, some of the best BMW content and expertise out there. Happy new year to you 😊😊
@@benm6899 Happy new year!
My god! That was a lot of work. I don't think I'd ever have done that at any time in my life, and I've done a few complicated things on a car.
I really love your shop being e39 onlly(minus the casual e60) I can respect the focus and wouldn't mind if my e39's path crossed with yours. Also, mad respect for not going with any m bumpers.
thank you so much, great retrofit guide
I saw this at RSF cars and coffee this am. Well done brother.
I'm sorry it was so dirty! But thank you :D
Spot on 🤷👌🏻what can I say, watching this is better than any workshop manual you could ever buy 🤷I’ve a BM E39 535i V8 msport,(1999) Full m spec front/rear bumpers, wheels ect lovely blueish/grey leather including all the door panels.nice charcoal headliner, glass electric sunroof.but no parking sensors lol 😢I won’t be fitting them though.I’ve cameras ft/bk..had mine coming up to 11 years now..and will be 24 years old this june..such a comfy ride even with its age.that’s one of the cleanest workshops I’ve ever seen 🤷steve 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks for the comment Steve! Lovely E39 you've got there, I've never even seen a 535i in person since they didn't come to the US.
AWESOME VIDEO!!! A LOT of work. Oy, vey!!! But it's a great option to have. 🙂Thanks, Ryan!!!
Thanks Julian!
Incredible documentation, work, and the car is looking awesome! If you haven't already figured it out because I recently did on my E46, you can actually change the scaling of the pdc sensors to have them start blaring later so you can really utilize the benefits of the pdc system.
Did you code that in NCS? These feel slightly different compared to my M5 (later), though I wrote a blank file to this module so it should be set to default for the E39.
@@E39Source I believe you can do that in PASoft
@@E39Source Yeah. What’s interesting with e46 and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something weird with defaults on other cars but my m3 came with factory pdc and I retrofitted pdc to my sedan, flashed a blank man file with ncs to the sedan pdc module after adding pdc to the VO and I noticed the pdc was a tad quieter and the sensors came on way too early compared to the m3. To the point it became a little annoying because the beeps would max out when I had like 5 more feet to go before hitting an object. Borderline kinda worthless.
Well I looked at ncs dummy and was able to determine the scaling was set to say .8 for the rear sensitivity (higher is more sensitive) on the sedan and .65 on the m3. I went down to .5 on both cars and now can get considerably closer to an object and the beeps increase as normal but the system is so much more useful!
After looking at the coding file it should be the same parameter for all models. In your case you have front and rear and there are two lines (middle and outer sensors for front and rear scaling).
@@thegenius46m Mine feels a little late, maybe I need to tune the sensitivity. I'll check those files today. Thanks for the info!
Yep, this is the correct way of doing things! Yet a separate part was nice just for the coding,
For wiring I think it is still free bmw wds online. Congratulations for another well done job!
Whats next? Electrical steering column active seats or perhaps why not e38 illuminated door handles interior ones...I guess you won't need heated front and rear seats
🙂
Thank you! I avoid making coding/programming content because it only generates hundreds of questions regarding software, driver, and cable setup and configuration. Every car is slightly different so there is really no 'one DIY suits all'.
Thankfully, I already have a power steering column. Active seats are cool but they don't add any real value. E38 illuminated interior door handles would be nice, I should have done that when I had the door panels off. Heated rear seats were never available on the E39, though I do hope to install/retrofit heated black sport seats.
I am not much of bmW fan but I like some BMW I can't wait to do this to my Silverado Restoring it 2008 gtm900
One thing about NCS expert coding that is bothering me is different settings for the rear sensors - you can select the type of your chassis (touring/sedan) and there is some setting for cars with a tow bar if I remember correctly. If the pdc module comes from a different chassis it could matter. Never tested if you can actually crash into something while parking because of settings for a wrong chassis tho... But good to know that I guess.
BTW the front harness is a bit of a headache to run and was impossible for me to find in one piece . Since I had to run my own cables from the front bumper to the trunk while retrofitting front pdc on my own car I decided to pull them along the ride side of the car. Then they go straight to the module and it can save some time. The only confusing thing then is diagnostics because left side will appear as right side but you can just swap cables around if you do it this way so everything appears as original in inpa.
Your car looks so fresh like straight from a production line. Nice to see that!
Hi Ryan, great video as always! Living in California I completely agree about the parking situation here lol. I have a 540 that is too far gone for me to restore. It has PDC, If I would like to add PDC to my M5 eventually, what would you recommend I save before I part with the 540?
You might as well grab the PDC module and bracket at a minimum. The center console switch panel won't be usable since the 540i one will lack a Sport button. If the cars are the same color, you can rob all 8 sensors. If you're willing to do some disassembly, you can grab the rear gong speaker and rear bumper wiring harness. The front sensor harness and power harness are deeply integrated into the main vehicle loom, so that would require some serious work to get those. You'd be better off to buy new ones.
Nice, didn't know you also owned a 540
Please see the video I posted last week! I acquired it from a customer and have been restoring it.
@@E39Source I missed it, I'll have to check it out!
Sweet
Dear E39Source - Thanks for the another top video - I've been watching for years and trying to do as much as I can on my own 2000 540i M sport auto, I wish I had the money for the manual conversion (maybe one day) . In the process of my DYI I have totally stuffed my gauge cluster and need it fixed, and hence my question - I noted at the end of your video you mentioned you sent your cluster away for a stepper motor repair - could you possibly provide the name of the repairer you use. Cheers AKM
Hi Anthony, thank you for the support! Please email me at ryan@e39source.com with a description of what is wrong with your cluster.
@@E39Source Thanks - email sent👍
Next retrofit you should do: EDC :)
That's a hard no from me. Those struts are silly expensive and don't last as long! Very cool technology though.
Just subbed! Big question! I purchased the front PDC retrofit harness to repair a front harness on a 540i wagon that had been previously removed and cut off at the front left hand corner... Are the front sensors location specific or do they all work in tandem? That is, do the wires need to go to specific sensors, left, right, center? Wondering how I'm going to know which sensor to run each wire from the original cut harness?? Or do all the front sensors work as one, not position specific alerts?
Thank you!
Trying to work on this today for the customer...
To clarify, trying to use the retrofit harness to splice in at the front where the original harness was cut and avoid routing to the trunk.
TC in Annapolis Maryland
P.s. I WILL compensate for your time and knowledge, grateful for your input.
Each sensor receives its own signal wire, and the module understands where an obstacle is based on the sensor data. If wired incorrectly, it will still work, but the module won't understand the location of an obstacle. You can find the wiring diagram and wire colors at bmwtechinfo.bmwgroup.com/#/login
Wow again. 😮👍 Can i use the net in the trunk in a E46 Touring? Do you have a part number? Thanks!
The E46 wagon actually has it's own net: tinyurl.com/37wsehwb
I was doing my complete PDC retrofit last year and didn't get to finish it. I already have the rear sensors wired in and the module hooked up. I got stuck because I couldn't figure out how to run the wiring for front sensors into the car and I couldn't find the i-bus so I gave up. Now I can finally get back to completing my retrofit
Heck yeah! Very glad this will be helpful for you :)
@@E39Source have you done a retrofit for the rear electric sun blind by any chance or have any material on it that could be helpful. Would love to retrofit that as well after the PDC
@@vachelliapremiumvodka8027 I don't have a video or .PDF guide for the rear sunshade, though I have read this post in the past and think it's a wonderful resource. This DIY is relatively simple: www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1779525-DIY-Retrofit-Rear-Electric-Blind
E46 PDC control module also works, but needs to be recoded from 4 to 8 sensors...
"We're not going crazy with this car, just getting it to nice driver status."
Yeah, Ryan, think you blew past that.... Your attention to detail is amazing, but sometimes a curse I guess!
Yeah, once I realized I had to replace the front bumper, I knew inside that PDC was next. I had ordered the non-PDC trims but ended up canceling them a few days later to order the PDC ones lol.
I have the same 02 540i msport, it's my favorite BMW I've owned so far. I won't be doing a pdc fit on it though, my attention is going to the stereo system right now. I was looking at the xtrons stereo set up for the navigation and CD player delete. What do you think about this kit? Do you have any suggestions for a different kit? I can't seem to find another manufacturer that does this.
I vastly prefer to keep things factory. I have the BavSound speakers on my M5, but the improvement over DSP with M-Audio subwoofers is negligible. The BlueBus handles my bluetooth/calling/aux needs just fine, and is a simple plug and play unit that replaces your CD changer in the trunk.
@@E39Source if I put the blue bus in, can I completely remove the CD player and nav system in the trunk without having any system issues? The stereo still sounds great btw. I have a battery draw problem and I think it could be the nav isn't shutting down, but I'm not sure yet. Bcm maybe?
I just got the car back in my garage to work on it again as I was doing an engine swap for a coworker (5.4 Triton) so I'm very excited to continue on my project. I still need to take it to BMW and get the takata airbag recall done. I'm not driving it until that is complete. I bought the car from a friend for $1500 in relatively good condition.
So far I've done a lot to bring it up to proper operating condition, and I'm addressing the smaller details like you did on your previous video. I won't be able to do my timing chain/guides like you did on yours as I don't have the special timing kit for it. The chains were still tight when I checked them during the valve cover and intake manifold job I did, so I'm hoping it holds out for a while until I can buy that kit.
I plan to daily it for work, but the chains and guides will weigh heavy on my mind until I can address the issue. I want to get it relatively to the same condition you got yours to, your video has helped immensely. I appreciate it and your input.
@@E39Source I watched your video on the blue bus and ordered one. Very cool, thank you.
By the way eBay has a lot of NOS 4GM I'm pretty sure they have some BMW parts as well
You should rebuild the headlights I did mine on my 525i/5 m sport I made them brighter than Teslas and quad highs
I find the E39 Hella Euro lights to be fantastic actually. Just as good as the Adaptive LED headlights on our 2016 M5.
@@E39Source I rebuild mine with evo fxr 2.0 bolt right up and ummitza halos and blacked out guts and morimoto electronics across the board and billet adjusters and better sealant
Hi, not really related, what's the place you send instrument cluster for repairs? TIA!
Or anyone else knows? Thanks!
I sublet my customer's clusters a company I've worked with for years. Please email me if you'd like to learn more. ryan@e39source.com
If I only want to retrofit rear passive pdc to an 98 e39, the main power cable would be the same? Or I need to find other part number?
The power cable would be different since you don't need connections for the center console switch. The rest is probably the same... and there is not a pre-facelift version of the retrofit data/power harness that I am aware of. I'd follow these instructions, but ignore the console switch connections.
Where can I get a good complete face-lift front bumper like the im seeing in your video for shipping to Zimbabwe 🇿🇼
I have a link to this bumper in the video description! And I think they ship world-wide.
Does facelift air snorkels under the front windshield match to preface filt chassis?
Yes, it appears that the newer ones are direct replacements.
Hello!
I have a question, can I convert my bmw e39 seats to electric seats and would it be hard or an okay ish diy?
You could certainly retrofit electric seats to your E39. I have never done this retrofit or looked into it, so I am not sure how involved/difficult the process would be.
Do you happen to have a price breakdown for this project?
Excluding the new bumpers and paint, the rest of the parts come to around $1,900 (retail).
Could you let me know where you got the bumper covers from?

@@E39Source Thanks buddy, I appreciate it.
My M5 doesn't have PDC... and ever since I bought my 520i daily driver that does have PDC I have to be *real* careful to remember there's no PDC when I get in the M5 😁
Hi, I have a Question, my E39 has PDC in the front and back, I have looked at each one and one hat a problem with a wire so I replaced that but they are still not working, every time I turn it on it is beeping and doesn’t stop, do you have an idea what that could be?
You'll need to scan the PDC module for fault codes and address whatever is reported. Are all of the sensors clicking when the system is on?
@@E39Source I mean for what I saw all of them are okay but whenever I turn them on they are just going crazy and don’t stop.Thank you!
@@_.iustin1 You're going to need diagnostic software to see what the fault codes are and view the live data from each sensor to see if one (more more) are malfunctioning.
Id go with rear view camera! Good job tho
Rear view cameras are nice, but then I'd have to retrofit navigation as well since I hate the aftermarket head units. I actually prefer the parking sensors to the camera, as they allow me to look around with my eyes while reversing and having the auditory warning as a backup. The camera is only useful if the obstacle is clearly visible and coming from the rear.
@@E39Source thanks for reply! I love what You do. Keep on doing it!
The length of the video is almost 123456 😂
All you need is a soft-close retrofit!
Have you considered swapping out the front comfort seats with sport contour seats? I want to swap E39 M5 two-tone sport seats in my 740i assuming they are the same size I believe (are E39 and E38 seats interchangeable?).
I have considered that, but those are even harder to find in black, heated, and in good condition. E38/E39 seats are indeed interchangeable.
