In terms of pure gameplay and presentation, nothing can beat Revenge. It had very colorful graphics and arenas, fast paced, effective grappling, and the full WCW roster at the height of the Monday Night Wars. Plus that intro was so sick. Best wrestling game of the 90s! One of the few games that made N64 worth having.
Here Comes the Pain is by far my favorite. The roster was awesome and the fast pace playability of that game was amazing. I´ve stopped playing wrestling games a long time ago because nowadays the graphics are great but the playing experience is sooooo slow, overly complex and boring. The Def Jam games were also badass.
Darran Kern I´ve played Shut Your Mouth like 3 or 4 times so I can´t fully evaluate the game (story mode, unlocked characters and etc...) but the few times I played it in my friend´s house I liked it very much.
I love Smackdown Vs Raw 2008, first one that let you run in any direction, first with the ECW roster, first one with the crowd fighting bit by the announce tables and had an amazing soundtrack.
it was addicting; but lack of full control made it difficult. which led to the modern era of video games allowing higher graphics; but more control. I think after a while; Graphics and Gameplay must be together to be at the top. I loved no mercy as a kid; but i also hated how AI can be so unfair. These day's wrestling games aren't as hard as it used to be.
I lived in the era where World Tour, Revenge, Wrestle Mania, and No Mercy was the shit. But I can honestly say I agree with you on 08. It was like the first game where I'd feel like I was actually in a wrestling arena. It showed me that the games were getting better. Allowing multiple people to be in royal rumbles instead of only four people (despite the tossing out mode being crap). And the ability (on Xbox or PS 3) to add your own music just gives it extra depth (along with the extra details in creating characters). I had fun recreating characters I made in No Mercy and bringing them out of retirement after 7 years of being no where in the ring lol. But the only reason I give No Mercy the crown is because they had the ability to do special guest referee all day any time. Otherwise, I'd actually give these up to date games the better rating.
LilPrince Killa I think 2k14 had the best overall options; creative, match, & arena wise.(EVERY WRESTLEMANIA!) Though it takes sliders to bring the best out of 2k14
No Mercy was absolute trash. I recently undertook an endeavor on my channel to analyze No Mercy without nostalgia impairing my judgment of the game. My verdict? No Mercy pissed me off so much that I rage-quit after only 14 episodes. Here's the let's play, if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/e3vFfvmEKLg/видео.html
The N64 AKI games reign supreme to this day. "No Merce?" as we say it, will still get my brothers and friends together to this day to play some royal rumbles.
I remember being so hyped for Here comes the Pain, my older brother came home with it one day and we played it all day. Wrestling games bring back great memories.

Here is a review of No Mercy on emuparadise:This game is terrible. Literal garbage pile. It's as if the developers couldn't think past throwing handicapped matches at you to make it somewhat difficult. It just gets old, and annoying (and fast.) With spelling errors galore, and a half-brained career mode, this could be the worst game of all time in my opinion. @@amirperreg8405 100% agree. It has to be one of the most overrated games ever, especially since people keep saying it has aged well. WWE 2K14 had my favorite campaign mode. Playing through Wrestlemania 1-29 introduced me to wrestling and the history and changed what I thought of it. I am still a huge wresting fan to this day and that game is part of why I am.
No surprise WWF No Mercy is top pick. I'm glad you mentioned the game deleting bug in the first batch of cartridges which I had. I actually mailed my bugged cartridge to THQ for the hell of it with a letter saying the damn thing is broke and amazingly, they actually sent back a new copy to me for no charge and no bugs. Very nice of them, too bad THQ is gone.

Yes!!! Here comes the pain for ps2 was the best. Heel Rock, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Undertaker, Classic Taker, GOLDBERG!! Here Comes the Pain was the first WWE game Goldberg was in.
I still have my PS2 and use it it to play the original copy from time to time :). Actually been wanting to replay it recently, after seeing what crap 2k17 is.
GREAT list. As a fan who's been playing since the days of the NES, I can attest to how great wrestling games have been at times. However, I would have definitely had SVR 2007 instead of 2006. That being said, my list differs somewhat from this one, though most of the titles are the same. From my own personal experience, my favorite and most beloved wrestling game has always been and will always be WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role. As for other entries, my list would also have to include Day of Reckoning 2, WWE 2K14 (still the best of the 2K series in my humble opinion), Showdown: Legends of Wrestling 3, and WWE Legends of Wrestlemania.
No Fire Pro Wrestling Returns? That has to be the deepest wrestling game of all time! You can download the latest rosters, hand-made by fans, and put them in the game via an AR Max!
I have to agree with you man. The other games on this list are great, like SD HCTP, SD vs Raw 2006, WWF No Mercy, etc. However, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns is also a great game in its own right. Talk about customization, this game enabled you to edit your created wrestler's A.I. pattern, whether they'll go coward halfway into fatigue or go all out brawling, man it's insane. :)
I like day of reckoning 1 better. The second one they introduced stamina and kind of ruined it for me. In the middle of a good match all of a sudden you couldn't do anything unless you just stood in the ring and did nothing for a good minute lol
What I loved about no mercy and now revanche is that it was so simple to learn everything and yet it delivered everything wrestling fans wanted .. fun factor was really high because of this .. I think that’s what new games need to do .
I see you weren't a big fan of any of the PS1 Wrestling games. Like... Warzone, Attitude, Smackdown, Smackdown 2: Know Your Role, WCW Mayhem, Nitro and Thunder. ECW Hardcore Revolution. I guess all these games sucked huh lol... But when they came out were super addictive and so fun. Maybe you were more of a N64 guy. WrestleMania 2000 and No Mercy were amazing but I only got to play them at friends houses back then. I got them now but the PS1 Wrestling titles get crapped on. At least admit they were cool when they were released. .
themadrapper101 I feel u I was a ps1 man myself and WWF attitude was the shit when I was in forth grade but I had a 64 too an no mercy on it...I'm playing no mercy on my phone now lol
Attitude was a great title, but overall its probably the only one that would be competitive with the titles chosen. The original Smackdown games were pretty bland, and all the WCW games were godawful even for their time.
themadrapper101 I actually started off with a PS with Warzone then I got both smack downs. After playing no mercy on my cousin's 64 I traded in my PS for the 64. I was a die hard wrestling fan and I have to say best wrestling game that I had played. It was definitely before it's time.
Def jam vendeta was my favorite game growing up the story was fantastic and when FFNY came out I shit my pants trying to get my hands on it. Its one of the best games that isnt made for a WWE/WCW fan.
Best wrestling games of all time (in my opinion in no order) • Smackdown Here Comes the Pain • Smackdown vs Raw 2007 • Smackdown vs Raw 2006 • Smackdown Shut Your Mouth • Smackdown vs Raw 2011 • WWE Day of Reckoning 1 & 2 • WCW vs NWO World Tour/ Revenge • No Mercy • Smackdown vs Raw • WWE 2K14 • WWE 13 • WWE All Stars • Def Jam Vendetta: Fight for NY
That's the gamecube one, right? I remember that had one of the best CAW systems. I created Batman, Superman, Wolverine, Spiderman and most of the characters from the Matrix.
It was the only game to that allowed that. And honestly, the only reason I put that as number one on the list. I created a specific wrestler that was a guest referee to handle specific wrestlemania matches. Also, since I was the best out of all my friends, I was just to be the referee and watch everyone do their matches, despite the fact that I'd try to resist the temptation to interfere. I was the best at resisting though, unlike everyone else. lol
+LilPrince Killa my favorite thing to do was have Paul bearer referee a match between undertaker and Kane LOL. I also enjoyed the clone a superstar mode. You could edit their profiles and I actually have Paul bear walk out with undertaker or cane. Undertaker and Kane were my favorite, just in case you could not tell. LOL
VrOOm1337 Only SvR game I know they had it was in the 2008 one. But you could only choose it as Triple H where you decide whether he wants to join Evolution or DX in a match between Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels. No other game gave you the option to freely be special guest referee other than WWF No Mercy.
DoR2 is criminally underrated. It's always my "go to" for a wrestling game and was an excellent complement to the gameplay style of the Smackdown games.
Day one No Mercy owner here. We were devastated to unlock everything, only for our saved progress to be wiped out. But we always went ahead and did it all again, but the game was so awesome. (my brother, my cousins, and I actually bought the foam and plastic replica belts, and competed for them on the games, and this was by far, the best time we had)
Yep I had the flawed copy as well, can't tell you how many times I re did everything and re made my characters, since every few months it would randomly delete everything and I couldn't send it in because I got the game second hand. Wonder why I got it so cheap lol
Svr 07 06 shut your mouth and here comes the pain are always gonna be the goats in my book, I played day of reckoning 1 and 2 as well when I went to my friends house when I was a kid, shit was fun
I agree 1,000,000,000%.... I still play no mercy when all my cousins come over. When you have 4 people the Royal rumbles, ladder matches, and no tag matches were just epic. I will say you did have fight for NY too low. That game is a classic as well
The way they did stamina mode in 06 was fucking dreadful, I was so sick of my guy falling to the floor after 4 moves, 07 still had it but it was bearable. I still turned it off in both though
Yes! the gamecube wrestling games are terribly underrated. Until 2k16, I've pretty much stuck with DOR 2. Loved that you could interrupt moves whereas you couldn't in the smackdown series, made the matches so much more intense.
I never was a fan of the series, despite even playing one of it's successors "Wrestle Kingdom" (PS2) that used the same game engine. Still too "arcady" for my taste (and horrible loading times). "Wrestle Kingdom 2" might have a kick ass roster with all the japanese stars and lots of legends, but still I didn't like the DoR/Wrestle Kingdom Engine so I didn't import this one.
+Dillon Haggett "Shitty rappers" Method man? Scarface? Proves you know nothing about Hip Hop and nobody wants a video game on shitty rock frontmen who scream their lungs out like they're having orgasms.
biggest flaw with no mercy. tag matches. wrestlers came out separately. wwe2k14 best wrestling game imo. wcw/nwo revenge was why i bought a n64. CLASSIC
Batz130 I never played WCW nwo revenge, WWF wrestle mania 2000, no mercy or virtual pro wrestling 2 until 2015 when a RUclips channel called bebettergamer wrestling introduced me to them. I still own those games and play them
I played No Mercy nonstop for 2-3 yrs when I was kid. The roster was enormous, the storyline was engaging, and the customization was ridiculous. I only ever felt that kind of excitement again when playing Smackdown vs Raw (2005) For the latter, I remember spending nights on my dial-up internet, researching how to re-create Legends in Create-a-wrester.
No Mercy or HCTP? Also, No Mercy is like X-Seven (Great, but severly overrated) while HCTP is like XIX (Awesome, but either gets it's deserved praise (HCTP) or is criminally underrated (XIX).)
2K14 is the last good Wrestling game. Honestly 15 was such a disappointment when they cut out so many options, they cut out custom entrances, they cut out custom theme songs, they cut out many stipulations and game modes, made the Women's matches not really worth playing, but at least they got to showcase their photography skills. Same with 16, granted it goes back to the good ole' days, but that's not good at all when it doesn't have the good old match types and stipulations. Wheres the Hardcore title, and the 8 man ladder matches. Or my 2 v 2 v 2 Falls Count Anywhere backstage, on the street and in the boiler rooms and all that goodness. 2k18 is going to suffer the same fate despite the Hardy return.
WWF No Mercy for the N64 was the best multiplayer wrestling game I had ever played. Having 4 people playing at the same time in a Rumble was ground breaking. Me and a friend 3D'ing my other friends through tables with the Dudley Boys. What an incredible console the N64 was. I nearly lost friends because of how competitive we were at Mario Party and don't get me started with Mario Kart 64. Those were some of the best days of my life. Wow, I didn't know that No Mercy was going to be #1. I figured there would have been a newer wrestling game which was better. No Mercy was the last wrestling game I played before I stopped watching wrestling.
I always think there’s an interesting conversation to be had about whether you should design the game as a fighting game or as a sports game. It sort of has to be both, but in the right measure
What about the original Smackdown and Smackdown 2: Know Your Role for the Sony PlayStation? I remember playing with both games when they first came out and the depth and customization of the games were incredible, not just for wrestling fans but for gamers in general. SM2 is also considered one of the highest selling wrestling games ever made as well.
That's the only WWE game I recall where you can actually create your own titantron. What happened to that? Granted, modding's still a thing, but it'd be great if 2k still included the feature nonetheless.
Loogy WWE 12 was the first one to have that. In 13 it was better working, though. You also had the highlight reel that you were able to use as a titantron, but it was also gone in 2k14.
My first actual wrestling game was Wrestlemania XIX. I got it for my thirteenth birthday, and is still my all time favorite wrestling game next to Here Comes to the Pain (Which was the first wrestling game/game I got when the PS2 came out) and the first Smackdown Vs. Raw.
I used to play wwf attitude toooooooo death when I was a kid. I remember my friends hating it because you had to press left, right, up down then X to do a move, but if you learned all the moves they were basically the same. It had blood that DRIPPED. and you could destroy an opponent to near death hahahahaha oh and edit the arena etc was cool as f**k
Holy shit. I never knew No Mercy and Def Jam was made by the same people. They need to continue making wrestling games
Duh

Wrestlemania 2000 on n64....so many hours. All worth it.

Indeed. Surprised SPFWXP made it on here and not Returns.
Yeah! Returs was a fuckin great game
Yeah, man! I'm still playing it to this day
Yeah, while I love the translated Super Famicom version, Returns, D (Dreamcast), and G (PSX) are all better.
wrestlemania 19, day of reckoning and 2 was so addicting for me back then
I like day of reckoning 1 better.
No Mercy was the best. Nice compilation.
Thatburnsmyass247 Thanks dude!
Miss the infinite finisher option ☹️ loved hitting stunner after stunners lol
I love that WWF Arcade game, but my favorite would have to be Wrestlemania 2000 and all the N64 wrestling games. That grapple system is the best ever.
Def jam vendeta was my favorite game growing up the story was fantastic and when FFNY came out I shit my pants trying to get my hands on it. Its one of the best games that isnt made for a WWE/WCW fan.
No mercy 4 ever
No Mercy!! You are damn straight! Great call!
I still liked WCW/nWo Revenge better, but they're practically the same game.
Best wrestling games of all time (in my opinion in no order)
• Smackdown Here Comes the Pain
• Smackdown vs Raw 2007
• Smackdown vs Raw 2006
• Smackdown Shut Your Mouth
• Smackdown vs Raw 2011
• WWE Day of Reckoning 1 & 2
• WCW vs NWO World Tour/ Revenge
• No Mercy
• Smackdown vs Raw
• WWE 2K14
• WWE 13
• WWE All Stars
• Def Jam Vendetta: Fight for NY
The last one is not a wrestling game
Def Jam!
No FPW Returns or KoC 2... :-(
Or wrestle Kingdomand ASPW for that matter
ITSMYYARD Or Virtual Pro Wrestling 2
Not even an Honorable Mention for DOR or DOR2?!
That's what I was thinking, DOR had everything a wrestling fan could ask for
I liked the DOR series, but there were some bugs, and it felt like it was trying the be No Mercy, but not trying hard enough.
That's the gamecube one, right? I remember that had one of the best CAW systems. I created Batman, Superman, Wolverine, Spiderman and most of the characters from the Matrix.
My brother made Gandalf and the Balrog. Good time.
Mike Sannitti yes
back when 2k wasn't even thought of and the era when thq, ea, acclaim and other companies was making wrestling games
I loved the guest referee mode for no mercy.
My favorite especially in story mode
LOL
It was not the only one. At the very least the original SvR had it.
VrOOm1337 Only SvR game I know they had it was in the 2008 one. But you could only choose it as Triple H where you decide whether he wants to join Evolution or DX in a match between Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels. No other game gave you the option to freely be special guest referee other than WWF No Mercy.
day of reckoning better be on this list
It's not but it should have been. DoR2 was my shit as a kid
DoR2 is criminally underrated. It's always my "go to" for a wrestling game and was an excellent complement to the gameplay style of the Smackdown games.
Dude, hell yeah it was the shit!
or what? you gonna start up a little petition on reddit? Gtfoh
NO MERCY #1 of all time
ALL STARS #2
all stars playing this game online for hrs thats how good it was and is
Waiting for the day someone makes a WhatCulture app
Can't lie My favorite game was smackdown vs raw 2008
Day one No Mercy owner here. We were devastated to unlock everything, only for our saved progress to be wiped out. But we always went ahead and did it all again, but the game was so awesome. (my brother, my cousins, and I actually bought the foam and plastic replica belts, and competed for them on the games, and this was by far, the best time we had)
Yep I had the flawed copy as well, can't tell you how many times I re did everything and re made my characters, since every few months it would randomly delete everything and I couldn't send it in because I got the game second hand. Wonder why I got it so cheap lol
How dare you forget WWF Royal Rumble for Sega Genesis!
Angel Bowfinger you mean SNES lol
Def Jam NY was amazing
I loved wwe smackdown vs raw 2007, good roster size and you can go into the crowd. Definitely a classic
Svr 07 06 shut your mouth and here comes the pain are always gonna be the goats in my book, I played day of reckoning 1 and 2 as well when I went to my friends house when I was a kid, shit was fun
yes! Def Jam Vendetta gets recognized!
OneeChan Fucked Me good times
SD VS Raw 2007 was better IMO
Yup
Gm mode was soo fucking good
that was a cool game i use to love them now it is just WWE 2K . check out my channal ... all your top 5 needs :)
agreed
Benoit was in SVR 07.
I agree 1,000,000,000%.... I still play no mercy when all my cousins come over. When you have 4 people the Royal rumbles, ladder matches, and no tag matches were just epic. I will say you did have fight for NY too low. That game is a classic as well
Is it bad that I liked SvR 2007 more than 2006?
No, 2007 is my most favorite as well
The way they did stamina mode in 06 was fucking dreadful, I was so sick of my guy falling to the floor after 4 moves, 07 still had it but it was bearable. I still turned it off in both though
Rogers Gary You could turn off stamina in options
Not at all
2006 was great but 2007 was even better
I still remember the damn story modes amazing
Day of Reckoning 2 anyone??
I prefer the first one
agreed the stamina ruined the game
Yes! the gamecube wrestling games are terribly underrated.
I was very confused that Day of Reckoning 2 didn't make the list... That game is way better than half the games on the list.
I still play the PS2 version of Fire Pro Wrestling Returns pretty much every day. Love it beyond love, man.
None of the GameCube titles? I call bullshit. :(
I still play DoR2!!!!
as someone who played dor2 for the first time a few years ago, I have to say, its good, but doesn't belong in the top ten
DoR FTW!
lol
both Def jam titles were on the cube....
Predicting Here Comes The Pain is number 1
Dammit
+Noticeably FAT it should be!
just ordered wcw/now revenge online.can't wait to play this again.again.again....wish this had theme music, the only thing missing.
No Mercy is pretty much the closest a WWE game has come to having a women's story mode.
SVR 2011? Mickie James?
that's SVR 2010
+Udgey Wudgey Mickie James' storyline was in SvR 2010, not 2011.
Def Jam: Fight for NY is way better than Vendetta.
If it had been rock band frontmen instead of shitty rappers then it would have been good.
+Dillon Haggett "Shitty rappers" Method man? Scarface? Proves you know nothing about Hip Hop and nobody wants a video game on shitty rock frontmen who scream their lungs out like they're having orgasms.
Most of his favorite rock guys would be too strung out on heroin to be a playable character.
Well as a sequel it was expected to be much better and it was...absolutely cracking game! The story mode is awesome, still wanna play that game again.
+Vincent Gulley and most of your favourite rappers are busy writing lyrics about shooting cops while they're doing cocaine off a toilet seat
Excellent list!!! The N64 really did haha the best wrestling games. And props for including Def Jam!
biggest flaw with no mercy. tag matches. wrestlers came out separately. wwe2k14 best wrestling game imo. wcw/nwo revenge was why i bought a n64. CLASSIC
2k14 best wrestling game? Have you played No Mercy or HCTP?
Batz130 I never played WCW nwo revenge, WWF wrestle mania 2000, no mercy or virtual pro wrestling 2 until 2015 when a RUclips channel called bebettergamer wrestling introduced me to them. I still own those games and play them
Batz130 I love 2k14 as well
BLAC GODFATHER Hey I know that channel! He displays caws right?
Yeah i liked 14 roo, but wwe 13 will always be my favorite
I really hope Day of Reckoning is on here! 1 and 2 were the best!
Damn WhatCulture. You hit my heart. Got me missing Def Jam Vendetta now.
Keegan Eldridge me too, wish these games would be backwards compatible
Best are (not in order)
SmackDown 2 (possibly the best)
SmackDown 1
HCTP
SVR 2006
SVR 2007 (best SVR game)
SVR 2011
WWE 13
SVR 2006 is so good that you put it twice XD
2009 too
2009 was the worst WWE game of all time
But you could play as John Cena's friend. Tony!
Young Metro wtf it was awesome
I loved this game! Just for this game I would by again a N64
Before I watch, I am saying Smackdown Here comes the pain is the best wrestling game ever!!!!!
Should be #1 instead of #2
you're to young to have experienced the best, im sorry for you.
Absolutely. If any game deserves a HD release it's this game. Even though I know it won't happen.
Dart year late, but so true.
Thank god we have Fire Pro Wrestling World now.
Well, I suppose we all have our opinions
I love 2K14, I also like how they give you all of those unlockables
And then 2K19 happened…
February 2018 and I'm looking lovingly at my beloved WWF No Mercy cartridge sitting on my game shelf right now.
If you remember raw 1 and raw 2 by THQ
You're GLORIUS
Lol I used to have the PC version of WWF Raw. I thought it was so cool having both PS1/PS2 wrestling games and even one on PC.
It was amazing man & wcw/nwo revenge as well!
Play Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 it's soooo much bettter
6:52 "I win.." "NO BROCK! WE ALL WIN! WWE SmackDown! Here comes the Pain!"
I still quote this with a close friend to this day.
You cant imagine how i apreciate you let D-Mob say "DEF JAM VENDETTA"
I really like WWE 13 Right up there w. Here comes the pain and no mercy IMO
I always think there’s an interesting conversation to be had about whether you should design the game as a fighting game or as a sports game.
It sort of has to be both, but in the right measure
Legends of wrestlemania is the most underrated wrestling game ever..
Why does “shut your mouth” never get any love?! Am I the only one whos played it?
It was my favorite smackdown game for sure, they had the brand draft and I thought the story mode was cool.
Complete agree with you my friend NO MERCY WAS HUGE!!!!! The best game of all times. Titles. Career. Moves. Man this game have all!!!!😁😁😀😀😀😀😀😄😀
smackdown vs raw 2011 is my favorite the road to wrestlemania, matches, even the game music they made was so good
Smackdown 2 definitely deserves a top5 Spot!
Just Great I was So Excited To Get A Ps2 now how am I supposed to have fun playing hctp knowing there is a better wwe game out there :(😭
Blampied is my god
Whenever there's a list of wrestling video games, I'm amazed that the 4-player coin-op "The Main Event" is always forgotten. I used to love that game.
My favorite was wwe13
That's been my favorite since HCTP with regards to the roster.
2 Cool's entrance made it great (and Eddie Guerrero and Hunico's bicycle)
That's the only WWE game I recall where you can actually create your own titantron. What happened to that? Granted, modding's still a thing, but it'd be great if 2k still included the feature nonetheless.
Loogy WWE 12 was the first one to have that. In 13 it was better working, though.
You also had the highlight reel that you were able to use as a titantron, but it was also gone in 2k14.
and the menus in that game where amazing
SD 2 know your role.....
Nah, nothing special about it.
But it was a vast part of my childhood
DoomSlayer 510 also you could play as head. 😂😂😂
