- After 5 Smackdown games on the Playstation consoles, it was time for a change. Smackdown Here Comes the Pain was the last entry in the Smackdown series. The new series that was taking its place? Smackdown vs Raw. How did this game do in following up HCTP? Arguably the greatest wrestling game of all time. How would Yukes and THQ start off their new series? Lets go back to 2004 and see how they did

I know a lot of you guys love this game, and it’s a really solid game. However for me growing up. Out of HCTP, this and SVR 06. I played this game the least. So I don’t have that connection that a lot of you guys do. So please don’t get mad that I called this game solid and not “Special” or “amazing” aha, its still a blast. It just got sandwiched between two amazing games. Regardless thank you guys for watching

The Story Mode was good in SmackDown vs Raw.
Loved the voice acting despite how bad it could be.

I absolutely loved that small wrestlers couldn’t just pick and carry around the big ones. Like Rey had the moves to throw people around, but they didn’t work on everyone
I thought it was funny that they work on the dudleys. They're clearly fat dudes, but I guess because they're short they could be lifted by any smaller guys. I don't think I've ever seen Rey lift anyone any heavier than like Chavo
I recently started playing all of the old school wwe games. I gotta say, the original Smackdown vs Raw is criminally underrated. It had the HCTP gameplay, a great soundtrack, and an all around good season mode. I don’t think it’s better than HCTP, but it was a great game that followed the GOAT

Thank you for making this video. This game gave me so much memories. Me and my brother legit argued for years saying which brand was better, Smackdown or RAW. I was Smackdown and he was RAW. It felt like a real war back then. I wish we get this feeling again someday.
The GM modes in the games after this must've helped that war even better lol

They should have done an 'arcade' mode that featured the classic style of gameplay in the new games. But of course, the WWE isn't about good ideas half the time.

Graphics still look so good. To me from what I've seen from the newer games the graphics haven't improved much. Also you were spot on about the soundtrack it is so good
One thing we don't talk about is the standard of wrestling at that time. Good wrestling shows are a major reason behind good wwe games. WWE took itself seriously back in the days. Length intense matches, entertaining roaster, hyped story lines, brutal bloody matches, beautifully designed arenas and it reflected in their games too.
Today, not just the game, but WWE itself has become a Joke.

Also, the submissions. Whereas before in HCTP, you had two types of submissions (one where you tapped a button to fill the meter and another without) SvR introduced the Type B (Blue) submission holds, where the meters were like ping-pong and you had to fight the CPU for the win. Of course there were instances where you could use the default wrestling headlock and win an entire game in a few seconds, but...
One big reason was that wrestling had real superstars back then-who cares about playing as becky lynch and dolph ziggler nowadays lmao
You are spot on. I haven't watched WWE for about 10 years but recently watched RAW at a mates house.....and it's dead. No superstars whatsoever. Weaksauce.
Bein honest though Dolph is one of the most fun superstars to play as, so what does that say about the game
100% correct, It's just not believable anymore there are hardly any badasses in wrestling now and most of them are all Indy looking athletes, there are no more big guys anymore or actual legit tough guys.
The original SVR is kind of underrated in a way. The first wrestling game to introduce the wrestler voice overs & heavily involved the 2 brands. Plus it was the first game to have the create a PPV mode where you basically set up your own matches on a PPV it was a really underrated feature. And how about that great season mode huh?
Loved the Season mode in this game. I remember there was a cutscene with Torrie Wilson going in the bathroom stall with John Cena (or whatever wrestle u chose in that mode) lmao

The thing with the roster, honestly though, i can't complain because it reflects the time. There's nobody missing, so it's kind of hard to have a stacked roster.
Yeah. As he mentioned, WWE's roster just became really thin all of a sudden from late 2003 to late 2004. It's the main reason why guys like Orton and Cena started getting huge pushes at the time.

I still play SVR on my PS2 alot. What I like about it is that when you customize the rules in the settings it affects the season mode matches not just exhibition like most WWE games. I also like how experience points earned during season mode can used on any wrestler's stats not just the one you are using. I also like how the stat improvements are permanent. So if you want to do a new season with another wrestler you don't lose thier maxed out stats. It can make for some challenging matches when everyone has max stats and you're playing on Legend difficulty.

Especially a Apna guy reviewing this classic. 27 now and you brought back so many memories esp on friends birthdays when that one buddy would have the multitab on PS2 and we'd all play together. I’m 35, I fell out of love with the wwe ages ago and I’m not up to date on current events. However, I recently dug out my ps2 and played through the entire season mode. Loved it, had such nostalgia and it made me go and subscribe to the network so I could go back and watch smackdown and raw in 2004. Smackdown in particular was crazy back then. JBL, Angle as GM, Cena being “stabbed” so he could be written off tv, Big Show being shot live on air. Fantastic memories.

My first game was SVR2006 around the time that SVR2007 came out, so it was on clearance and as a kid, I couldn’t have been happier. Plenty of hours spent within the story mode and diva matches 😂 such a blessing to play these gems as a kid

That was such a great time for WWE games Here Comes the Pain, Smackdown versus Raw and SmackDown vs Raw 2006 3 amazing years. Oh how I miss THQ so bad. I haven't even played a wrestling game in the past 6 years 2k14 with the last one I truly played. 2K has not done a good job with the franchise in my opinion I tried sampling the other games but for me I was done once they broke the submission system.
Just as he said in the video the music absolute bangers discovered so many bands (Breaking Benjamin my favorite band) off video games in general back it during the mid 2000s with good license music

This is one of the greatest SVR games in my opinion, I feel like they peaked at 06. They added so many things on 06 but SVR 1 will always be my favorite over any SVR game. 07 and 08 were good but then it started getting complicated and I lost interest, I didn’t bother playing after 2009. I still own this game I’m gonna have to replay it!

Man i miss these games so much... Great music, awesome "attitude era" vibe, the divas were amazing, the superstar roster was flawless. Hell even if somebody wasn't there, you could create them!! I miss the old days. Haven't watched or played faithfully since those days long passed.
