My friends band opened for High on Fire back in the Surrounded by Thiefs days. My friend's mom asked him what he does to warm up before "singing". He just laughed and said "I wouldn't call it singing exactly....". He seemed to enjoy talking to my friend's mom more than everyone else there. Really cool guy and he hasn't seemed to change in that respect.
Was wandering through a casino in Vegas, saw Pike, said hi. We chopped it up for a while, then he invites me to hang w him and his “buddies” (Mastodon dudes). Super cool guy.
He's such a chill fucking dude. Just a really genuine person. Him and Hank III are probably the two most approachable, down to earth guys in entertainment. Funny story about Hank, he actually has the Green stack Dopesmoker was recorded with. The first time I saw him it was my wife's birthday, and she was the one to turn me onto his music, and he ALWAYS stays after to shake hands, sign shit and take pictures with fans. But between his country set, and AssJack, he played about twenty minutes of Dopesmoker which I thought was fucking dope just in general. Just him and a drummer. But I noticed the Green amp behind him, so after the show I asked him about it, where he got it, how long he's had it, and he just straight up said "Matt gave it to me.". I was fuckin' floored.
"Got better at our instruments"- jesus they surpassed almost every other band a long time ago..What a cool down to earth guy Matt Pike seems to be , great interview.
I went to this show in Bristol and it was my birthday too, lets just say i wont forget High on Fire and Enslaved shattering my ear drums that night, what a birthday to remember haha! \m/ good interview by the way.
