How To Build And Install A Door Jamb Extension - Exterior Door Installation

- Опубликовано: 3 июн 2024
- In this video, I show how to install a door jamb extension. I build the door jamb extension for an exterior door installation. I will be installing this door in a 2x6 wall. The door is too narrow for the framing. To save money by avoiding buying a special order door for a 2x6 wall, I DIY my own door jamb extension. Enjoy!

18:45 Thumbs up for answering my question before I even got to ask it! 👍
I figured somebody was going to ask why from the outside not inside. You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
This stuff is golden. 👍👍👍
Also, I suggest you use low expanding spray foam. I’ve seen the expanding stuff warp doors and windows so they don’t work at all.
It was great seeing this video as you mentioned earlier. It's just like I would install it as well and actually cut just an 1/8" off the extension piece on the bottom to give that extra reveal. I love using flashing tape whenever I can for that little bit extra sealant. Most important is like you said, doing the extension on the outside is so important so you don't have issues restricting the opening of the door. Interior doors are the same. (In case you don't pre order extended jambs from a manufacturer). Been on many remodels and saw the extension on the inside and a customer asking about fixing it. Most of the time it was an error done by someone else. Figuring the brick mold needing to stay attached from factory. Ordering exterior doors with the proper jamb thickness can get costly and of course time for a special order.
Great video as always. Thank your helper as well. 🔨🔨👍🏻👍🏻(One hammer that likes button for him)
Yes, this is the video I mentioned in your last comment! As you more than likely know, doing a jamb extension is relatively easy, compared to other DIY projects. You are right, keeping the brick mold attached can be very difficult, but I find it does leave a better finish if you can do it. This door came with PVC brick mold, so I definitely wanted to reuse it. Often times I will replace the wood brick mold with PVC brick mold if it does not. Thanks for stopping by and watching David!
Man this is the best door video I've seen. Great job explaining everything. Thank you.
You make it look so easy, it gets us in trouble! Lol!
You won me over. Few know about this. Also its important to extand the jamb under the brickmould to put the hinge in the proper place.
This video was great i have an older home, brick and the depth is about 10inchs
will use this for a clean install
Your channel is very helpful! Thank you
Thanks, this is a project I'm just about to tackle so perfect timing. 😀
Excellent! This should be a good resource for you. It’s really not too difficult to do if you know how to do it. Thanks for watching!
When I was building, I needed a door for a 2x6 exterior wall. Building codes require that exterior walls need to be 2x6 where I am at. Can’t believe manufacturers give such little options without having to order something custom or special order.
The door I want from home depot is just over 400 bucks. To get the exact same door with the larger jamb is over 700 bucks. A 300 dollar increase for 2 inches of material... total crap
Great video Josh as always ! Love the detail. Others' videos are too short. Waiting for "kitchen counter top" and " sewerage manholes and bottle gullies" installation videos. Hope they are in the pipeline. :)
Hey this video came out at a good time. I bought a new front door. Mine is for 6” wall thickness. It is essentially just like yours. I will remove ALL the old door opening to re-build a new one. Any tips from you is always welcome though.
Great video great view sounds. Woodworking. Door 👍
Thank you! This door is going into my shop I am building. I will be doing some woodworking videos in the future. Stay tuned!
I like all you did, but I like to caulk the jams as I assemble so it seals the joint and leaving sharp reveals. I feel caulking afterwards causes the joints to be rounded. I enjoy your professional channel.
Yes, you can put caulk while you are assembling the jamb. That would add a extra layer of sealant, and it can’t hurt! I’m glad you are enjoying the channel. Thanks for watching it!
Curious if your thoughts about the threshold being short depth compared to everything else.
Not to be “extra” but you could drill pocket holes in the backside of the jam extension and eliminate screw holes in the face? Agree? Awesome video the channel is great!
What about the threshold not extending out all the way now? What do you do about that? Also, do you have the item number for the 7 1/4 x 10' PVC board? I can't find it on the App. Great video!
Appreciate the video, but I'll definitely be just ordering a door already made for a 2x6 wall...
It is definitely easier to order the door that way. Thanks for stopping by!
Good luck. Every box store and builders store around me only stocks 2x4 doors. Same door in a 2x6 jamb was $ 700 more for a “special order”! Absolutely BS…. Who buys a 2x4 exterior door in 2023??? Besides a manufactured or mobile home.!!!
Um, have you checked the price comparison between the two? 😂
What size deck screws did you use?
Nice video, but I would rather see you use aluminum z flashing along the top of the door.
Can you install the garage door
We had our exterior door replaced because the original door and frame were not plum or level, Unfortunately the new door is warped, we think? The opening side top corner is pulling away from the door frame and leaving air gap, that you can see light through and air, possibly even the odd mosquito and fly. We have called the installer and he has not gotten back to us? typically so I am afraid. IS there a quick fix? one that won't void any warranty? OR are we at the mercy of the installer? Thanks.
we got around this issue on icf house by using sidelights
could the jam extension be installed after the door is set in place?
Yeah, you could do that afterwards. I hope that helps!
@@TheExcellentLaborer this helps. Thanks for the response.
🔨👍
Thanks for the support!
No glue? Won't that line of caulk eventually split/shrink or pull away revealing two pieces (original jamb and extension) and then look like a scab job? Imagine this with a $10,000. exterior door...
Can't moisture get behind that housewrap? Asking because that flashing tape wouldn't be as effective.
Are you hiring helper? 😊😊😊
Not at the moment. Thanks!
@@TheExcellentLaborer I have skill for wood working, wood carving, welding....ok no problem thanks 🙏🙏🙏
just saying that isn't how you use a table saw. You always want the cut piece on the OUTSIDE of the blade or the small piece can get lodged between the blade and the fence...
Loved the video until you used the red can. That gives this install a 2/10
None of these folks who are this good seem to remember how to talk to people who aren’t professionals.
So many of these channels are full of back patting from other professionals. Just wish someone out there could figure out how to talk to a non professional audience.
To me it appeared as though he was giving directions to a 2 year old. Can't fallow along with that it's definitely best to hire someone
@@jhuntley575 how long have you been in this line of work?
Soooo many points for water intrusion in your installation. Norm Abram and Tom Silva would be embarrassed for you.
