I am planning to add a door in my home and haven't done a project like this in a while. I needed a refresher, so finding your video was greatly appreciated. The detail my brain needed was there and you made the steps clear without the extra chit-chat.
Great explanation. I am putting in a new door for a friend on an 80 year old building that the walls are 8" thick. So I ordered a 6" jamb and extensions, but had no idea on how it went together. Again great job.
The house I was doing had 2x6 framing & 6” 9/16 jams. I took the same jam as you used header and strike side. Took butt side cut it to give me 2” extensions and used dominos to mate the 2” extension ! Wala!! Done! I am a finish carpenter contractor so I am caution bout those trim screws they snap like twigs under pressure ! However I am sure your good! Pl 400 expands so I stay away from that!
If I have an exterior door already installed that needs an extension like this, it can be added while already installed? I need the extension so u can get a new storm door that won’t have a gap. I don’t want to replace the main door.
A tile nipper works much better for pulling nails. It looks like broad bill pliers that are curved in the back. It will easily pull finish nails and 16d nails.
I think so. I’ve cut down custom widths for interior doors many times. Just need to make sure it’s somewhat close or your threshold may look a little funny. Good luck!
@@HomeSource Bummer. All the doors I can find are standard 4-9/16 and 6-9/16. My door frame width is 5-1/2. House built in 1923. What's my options? Thanks for your feedback.
Do you think that groove where the extension was added is so you can fill with putty or Bondo and sand flush to blend the two surfaces together before painting?
No. They do that’s it here’s a clear definition between the two. Trying to fill and blend is a lot or work and in the end probably won’t look as good as a line your eye naturally goes to.

Awesome man! Exactly what I need for an exterior door project! Somebody bought an exterior door that wasn’t wide enough.
Well made video, excellent job! Thank you! Probably saved me hours of headache and frustration knowing what I'm going to have to do ahead of time.

Gluing compensates for any weakness in fasteners
Great video and construction tips. Thanks.

how do we go about installing stone door surround and jamb
I'm a big fan of all GRK screws. good tip
Thanks just the info and procedure I need to do mine. I also bought a Mastercraft door glad to know
they make extensions.
Have a link to this kit?

Would it be possible to order this pre-hung door with the proper door jam width?
You can definitely order in different widths, for sure 2x6 and 2x4, but not sure about other sizes.
With the door sill extension, any concern of water getting between the extension and original sill into the house?
I'm sure the glue and the paint will seal it up well. Paint should always be touched up every few years to protect the wood.
It happened to me I had to take it out and caulk it
Question for ya. Can you cut down the extension if you don’t need the width they are selling? I need 5 1/2” added. Thank you for a great video!!

Couldn't you do the extension on the other side? This way you dont have to remove the brick mould?
Unfortunately not because the door wouldn’t be able to open correctly. The hinges need to be even with the interior wall so it can open into the room.

@@HomeSource thank you for the reply
where can i buy the jamb extension kit?
I got the kit from the same store I got the door. In my case it was Menards. The extension kit needs to come from the same manufacturer as the door.
Can you add a door jam extension to a door that’s already installed?
U can. Nail extensions to framing using shims where nails or screws are used. Caulk edges and trim.
This saved me for my install today
Thank you.
I would have loved to see the jamb mesh up, to the original, up close .
Very helpful thanks!
Thanks for the video
Great video, Thanks.
👍👍😊
Thanks.. so glad I found this video
I thought he was gonna put it on the inside at first lol.
Thank you so much!
thank you!!!
You skipped the part on how to “just clip” the sill extension in place and ours is definitely not just snapping in place
Thanks!
NICE GOOD JOB!!!
you planning on breaking that blue wall down? not going to be "perfect" drywall with that textured wall...
Nope that one stays. We’ll retexture everything and when done you won’t be able to tell new from old. Very close to that stage now!
They are called rabbits not datos. Why are you putting the extensions on the exterior rather than the interior( no threshold extension needed)
My bad! It's an in-swing exterior door. Can't put ehe jamb extensions on interior due to hinge interference.
Also, carbide saw blades cut Al just fine.
