    Used to do this for a living as a young man. Now, 40 years later I plan to do it as a hobby. I have a lot of my old hand tools. Always has been very soothing for me.

      Your wife is lucky to have you... I’ve always wanted a jeweler at home...when if you need a ring smaller, because your finer is 5.5 and you always get 7’s instead of me using a bandaid to make it smaller, I’d ask you to fix it

      Would love to see what this looks like at a smaller scale. Do you have all these tools or can you get away with a lot less, if your jsut resizing for yourself, friends & fam here and there.

    And I want to say Sergei did a beautiful job.

    •  8 лет назад

      +Susan Newman He did decent job ,yes. Only because he don't use the "solder" ,he weld the ring . NOT many jewelers weld the rings together .

    • @wewd
      @wewd 6 лет назад

      You must weld platinum due to the high fusing temperature. Gold and silver can be soldered.

    • @classicuniquegifts9704
      @classicuniquegifts9704 5 лет назад

      You can slightly see where the ring isn't rounded 100% where it was welded and I think that's the only noticeable thing to someone with a good eye. But I was a bench jeweler apprentice before and people think it's a chill, work with your hands, artsy job but it's kinda like McDonald's as in fast pace. I had many rings come back for repolishing, finishing, and stone setting after I was done because the environment during the holidays was crazy and the floor was full. But these jewelers come to work and can get a load of 300 or more rings to be resized, repaired, redesigned, or polished and the clock doesn't stop ticking. He did great!!

    NICE! Much better than adding beads to the inside shank to make it feel smaller on the finger. It's probably much more complicated when the ring is thicker and has grooves all around to do it the professional way as shown in the video.

      When a ring is too big for your finger they cut the shank (inside part of the ring facing the palm) to remove a small amount of gold then solder it together again to form a smaller ring.

    • @coreyeganjewelry
      @coreyeganjewelry 7 лет назад +1

      Dan, sizing beads are usually offered when the customer has large knuckles but a skinny finger. The beads can work over the knuckle but a smaller all-around band cant. You can also ask for the sliver of gold back from where they size your ring down, but bear in mind that they take out just 2.5mm per size, and that's not including the width of the two sawblade cuts. The sad part is you probably paid more to ADD the gold beads to your ring than the value of any gold that was removed.

      It's a good question. There are quite a few jobs in the field. I'd imagine if you get the tools and practice you can do the work freelance if you're good and earn a reputation. That said, look at metal craft courses at a fine arts college, course availability is limited but for special students(less than 8 credits per quarter), and students over 50, I have seen alot of accommodation, so that's a good option as well. I will be bronze casting next quarter, myself, which is pretty awesome if you ask me. :D
      Good luck!

      If they brazed the cut piece back in the ring, it would be the same size as the starting diameter. Brazing metal or solders typically have a lower melting point than the work piece otherwise it would all melt and droop.
