In this video I review the Meike 28mm F2.8 Pancake Lens For Sony E-Mount. For around $82, it is a good budget option for a small 28mm lens. I wish the manual focus was easier and it was an F2 lens, but you cant expect everything for nothing.
"i like this lens cap*
*flicks lens cap onto floor* lmao
I love how you constantly upload video about a6000 / a6300 lenses.. it's really help me to decide what lenses should I buy next.. Keep up your good work !
Thanks for the support!
I want pancakes!!
JenessaIRL Of course you do, babe.
That was cool how you flipped the box and caught it smoothly while continuing dialogue. Nice!
Thanks TM, You always deliver the best of best info, precise and concise !!! No time waste. Please make a Audio setup video for Sony A6000, Thanks in advance.
Abhishek JI Thanks for the compliment! I have an audio set up video that I posted a month or two ago. Check that out and let me know if you have questions or ideas for future videos!
Have you tried the 25mm f/1.8 if so which do you prefer?
Beautiful pics man!
i own a a6000 about several months now and ur video helps me to decide what lens should i buy next. thanks anyway
dude, the 1st four clicks are amazing. you really nailed it.
Hey,
Thank you for all your reviews! I'm thinking to buy this lens because it's so small. But which are is the best for you between the 25 7artisans, the 28mm Meike or maybe the 32mm neewer, little longer ?
Thanks in advance!
What camera and lens did you use in shooting your youtube videos? They're amazingly shot.
I love this little lens. Makes my xe a "pocket" camera. Useful close focus, 25cm. Sharp enough. You don't need a 1.? For low light with modern sensors.
hey there's Hengyijia 25mm f1.8 on amazon, could you also make a review about it?
Great video as always. Could you please review some tele lenses? Like Sony 55-200 or Tamron 18-200? Thanks!
Thanks for the information
I'm getting a Meike Lens, which one would you suggest, Meike 35mm 1.7 or this lens?
I have A7RII. Just want to wonder how it will work with it? If you will make a short video for both 28 and 35mm i will really appreciate that. I know it will b 1.3 cop factor but still worth to have something small size and cheap.
The same problem of the short focus throw between infinity to 2m, is present also in lenses like the Nikon ais 28mm f / 2.8, very difficult to focus far away objects
Really love your vids. :D Could you make a review for the Mitakon Zhongyi SpeedMaster 35mm F0.95? I think many people have the same request as me. Thanks in advance. :D
hey TechMafia, I like your review videos, I have one suggestion that after you do a image samples, can you add the zoom to the focus area100% picture , thanks
Can i use this lens for Samsung nx1000 ....thnx
How about comparing it to the Canon 28mm f2.8 FD which can be found even cheaper than the Meike and is FF?
sorry, sir, can you make a comparison video between Samyang 12 mm and Canon 10-22 mm with an adapter for Sony. acuity test both and sharp comparison
wow I'm pretty impressed, honestly. Sharpness is good. Contrast looks like it may be low, or perhaps it's due to flaring. But still a nice deal!
Hello, thanks for your nice videos. Why didn't you mention the hyperfocal distance scale on the Meike 28 mm/f2.8 lens? It shows you the depth of field in dependence on the choosen f-stop. Focussing isn't the problem of an ultrawide manual lens, if you are used to controlling the field by using the advantageous hyperfocal distance scale. So you very calmly can prepare your next point and shoot job without the need of fiddling around the focus ring. Greetings from over there
Nice, you're going to have to start a Meike playlist ;P
is this Meike lens the same as the Neewer branded 28mm?
will this lense be suitable for sony a7 full frame?
nice video. Which lense do you prefer with good low light performance,
Not yet. We are patiently waiting for Sony to release something like a 16mm F1.8. Please sony, please.
Hey man, great video and I love the effort you put into making this a solid channel! It really shows!
Got a quick question or perhaps request… are you planning to make a review of the Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8? I just recently got it and I have to say I love it! However, when I made my initial pick I was also considering the 16-70 (the one you reviewed recently), but do to budget constraints I could only pick one (24 or 16-70 just to be clear).
So to the point… are you planning to review the 24mm, and if yes, would it be possible to compare it to the Sony Zeiss 16-70. I’m just curious how they would compare to each other at different f values, their performance in general, OSS in the 16-70 etc… There is nothing like that on RUclips for obvious reasons, as it's questionable to compare a zoom to a prime, but nonetheless, it would be very interesting.
Thanks, and double thanks if you managed to read all of this!
Your videos are awesome! You help me so much :)
Nice! Glad to help!

Can I put it in.my Canon 7d???? Will the vignetting appear??
I would find it very hard to focus on objects further out than infinity as well. Interesting lens and review. The manual lens reviews takes me back to the days of film and my original Olympus 35mm camera (that I still have) and all my TLRs. It would be much easier to get right though with digital.
I love your videos so much.. keep making them..
Thanks! Will do!
Beautiful! Something that annoys me about these modern autofocus cameras is most of the lenses no longer have markings to show the distance or depth of field when you focus them manually. Olympus came out with a couple, but they're not exactly cheap. And I do have some old Minolta MD lenses, but with the adapter they aren't very compact. So it's nice to see something that's compact AND affordable AND has the traditional markings.
I love pancake lenses. My first was the Sony 16mm f/2.8mm. Not a really sharp lens and was less sharp with the ultra wide and fisheye converters. The later much more expensive Sony 20mm f/2.8 I bought is decently sharp but narrower. The meike 28mm f/2.8 has an even narrower angle of view 42mm (35mm equivalent).
I hope it as sharp as the Sony 16mm f/2.8. The meike 28mm f/2.8 price at around 70€ is fantastic. It must be the same lens with the Neewer 28mm f/2.8. pancake.
The reason why there's such a small range between 2m and inifinity is because it's a 28mm lens with conventional focusing. There is very little extension required to go from 2m to infinity on a 28mm lens, so you get little throw. You'll find lenses wider than 28mm will have even shorter throws there unless they have a large focusing throw overall.
Can you do the rokinon 12 mm?
For not taking much time to frame the pictures, they looked really good to me, really good. You have a good eye. The Amazon price seems reasonable. Great video, Thanks.
Is this a wide angle lens? Sorry for the silly question as I am now starting to get into digital photography.
I once wanna buy this cute cookie-lens, it's so compact...
but I can imagine that there would be purely black around the CMOS sensor cause I’m using the A7
Bought this lens the other day and like it nice and clear and is made of good quality materials my only issue is that there is no electronic connection so the camera doesn't register that it has a lens attached which means the shutter doesn't fire you have to go to the settings and enable shutter firing without lens plus it only works on manual controls so the creative and different modes don't work with this lens but overall it's a good lens
hey quick question i was trying to decide between the sony 16mm f2.8 lens and the sigma 19mm f2.8 dn lens.. can anyone help me decide which one I should go for? which do you think would have the better bokeh for portraits?
I was actually surprised by this video. I was starting to think that you were a Meike fanboy. Nicely reviewed, and good advice with the Newer 35mm lens.
Better than the world's cheapest 35mm? Very kind words! Thanks for making these videos, sure helps to keep squeezing the juice out of our alpha 6000's
I am revising my previous comment in which I was perhaps too harsh on this lens: I took the lens today for a thorough test, both of B&W and colors on a A6000 sony. It does have a sweet spot (in my opinion) in which the lens becomes pleasant and useful, with some nice character.
To Arthur: I like your videos very much...keep it up. Thanks.
Can you make a video on some vintage lenses like the 70's Sigma you showed in the A6000 review? I loved the pics you shooted with that lens.
Bruno Herrera Sure, I have a bunch of new lenses that I am testing currently, but I'll throw in a few vintage lenses just for fun.
I wan asking u something.. Have u been ever review batrei grip for a6000? I searching n dont find yet..
Im ur new subcriber anyway thank for nice review ^_^
What about Meike 35mm f/1.7 or is it same as Neewer?
Upd.: rewatched video about Neewer. No question more :D
Hi there. Nice video.
I'm on the market for some cheap prime lens for my beloved Sony Nex6. I was asking myself if it would be better to go for this lens or the 35mm f1.7. I had my opinion but you definitely answer the question in this video. I will get the 35mm...
can you do the sel20f28?
just a quick question is this lens for the apsc sensor or are they full frame lens? I im asking if the image is cropped or is it true 28mm? And i recognize the River walk in San Antonio pretty cool place
Dez The Mechanic it's an actual 28mm.
Do you think you'll get the sigma 18-35 anytime soon? Would love to see your take on it paired with the a6000 and mc-11
Samuel If I didn't buy the Sony 10-18 a few days ago, I would have said next week. Right now I think it's about 3-4 weeks out for me.
the only thing I could find similar price for Fujifilm camera was the Opteka 28mm f/2.8 for $89. wonder if your brand makes one for Fuji X mount?
whats the difference between fixed lens and pancake lens? im new to photography...
A fixed lens doesn't zoom in or out. A pancake lens is just small and flat (like a pancake). Pancake lenses can be primes (fixed) or zooms (like the pancake kit lens).
Have you tried it on full frame? If yes - how strong it vignettes?
Its cool seeing downtown SA in your Video! yall on vacation?
Hey technology mafia.....!! Could you please let me know which lense to by for adtro photography... I'm having Sony a6000
I would use the Rokinon 12mm F2.
Looks great to me
Hi, loved ur videos so much. I have a question by the way, May u give me some comments? I want buy a budget light weight prime lens for A6000, consider between sel35f18, meike 35f17, & sel20f28...for purpose is lightweight, big aperture & travel, thanks
how1001 how SEL35F18 without question.
Thanks ur reply !! I'm just entangled with the price only, haha. Btw, will keep enjoy&support ur video with took by sel35f18.
hi,TM. May I ask 1 more question? I aready had sel1670z & sigma 19 f28 DN. Should I buy sel35f18? or previous 2 lens aready enough for travel?Thanks
I showed this video to some of my other Lens Caps & They were appalled at the blatant vialance in this film!!!
Hey nice vid as always, were the sample images taken from a6000 or a6300? could you please make a vid on a6000 vs a6300 ? i am stuck between this two and dont knw which one to go for. Thanks.
rohan rawal They were taken with the A6000. Honestly I still use the A6000 more than the A6300. Save the money and get an A6000.
TechnologyMafia Thanks mate, so done a6000 it is 😁🙋and with the saved money ill buy the prime lens 35mm as you suggested 😁 Thanks alot. Keep the vids coming, it's awesome stuff.
You said on Second 15 "f1.8" :P
Love the Videos from
You too!
Love my a6000 as well and have finally the 35mm1.8 Sony SEL .. Great Lens !
Greetings from Berlin At 4:50 in the Night :-)
Fred Hege Wow, yes! My mistake! I'm glad you like the 35mm, that is still my favorite. Greetings from Texas!
1.8 would have been amazing tho lol
do manual lenses like this one with no electronic connections still allow you to utilize focus peaking with the A6000?
yes
Thanks for the review, it really helped me to decide between this and the Neewer 35mm. Those images are beautiful, no reason to apologise. :-) Btw. nice beat behind those images, whats the title?
Is that San Antonio River Walk?
Sharp!
I know it's probably a boring topic for a video.... but i wouldn't mind seeing some info on different tripods. pros and cons of different types, and such. I recently found an older lens that is a 500mm f8, and I have the adapter for the a6000. its been fun to play with. I also have the canon extender that fits it, and for that i definitely need a tripod. there are so many out there that vary in price so much.
Is there a better pancake lens in your opinion? I am looking for form factor, I want to be able to carry my a5000 in my pocket, for the times when I can't carry my camera bag. Price does matter, but what else is out there?
The 16-50mm kit lens is the best pancake lens.
TechnologyMafia I have the kit lens, but it’s not pocketable, I thought that meinke would be better for form factor. Is it as long as the kit lens? - p. s. Love your videos
pretty nice pics
is the zoom lever next to the shutter button usable to zoom in and out for this lenses for the sony a5100 or is there another way to zoom in for it without the zooming ring on the lenses?
This lens doesnt zoom....
oh that's great actally thanks
Seems like a nice little lens. What price?
List of pancake lenses for 35mm SLR, RF and mirrorless cameras:
lens-db.com/pancake-lenses/
I think jumping from 2 meters to infinity is what gives it its pancake form. I hope they can come up with DSLR lenses too
For a guy that's not a pro photog your images are crisp! *orders lens*
Can you review the Sigma 19mm 2.8?
Its awesome! Just got mine. Very sharp, great colors, you won't be disappointed. I did a comparison between the Sigma 19mm 2.8 and the Sony 20mm 2.8.... I ended up selling the Sony. No comparison, the sigma is MUCH sharper. Comes with a cool case too.
the focusing with sony is much better. when using continuous AF, the sigma only uses the center. That was a deal breaker for me.
The ones you nailed looked pretty darn sharp to me, a couple seemed out of focus (maybe due to focus ring). I have seen some good quality video with this lens on RUclips. Agree, should own the 35mm 1.7 first. I own both and like each one. For me kinda pseudo, in-between wide angle lens at a really good price. Kinda like as you used it for street architecture in this vid, I think those pics turned out great!
Hi,can i ask?You know The Canon Lens EFs 24mm f/2.8?I'm thinking about it to buy it for my sony a6000.can you help me?
Why would you...?
For environment portraits,street photography, landscapes.
Right, but why wouldnt you buy a native E mount lens? You are going to need an adapter (sigma MC-11 or equivalent) which is expensive, the autofocus will not be accurate 100% of the time, and the Canon lens isnt exactly super sharp. I'd look into the Sigma 30mm F1.4 which is going to be sharp, much faster, native, and less expensive after you factor in adapters. If you are looking for something dirt cheap, check out the 7artisans 25mm F1.8 I recently reviewed.
TechnologyMafia, is the sigma 30mm wide enough for my needs?I saw your vid for the differences beetw
between 2.8 vs 1.4 sigma.but i don't know if i want to give 100$.
do the 35mm from meike
That is a rather good looking lens.
I love how small this lens is wish it was wider than 28mm
I dont find the Meike at my place, but it should be call Voking here. The form factor and the looks are just the same
You mentioned focusing beyond Infinity that's quite a trick
San Antonio, my favorite place in Texas! Ergonomically, a thicker built lens would give much more room for the fingers to grab hold. Pancakes are fine, if autofocus equiped, but this looks pretty troubling. However, your images are some of the best I've seen in your lens reviews :)
Thank you sir! I might be getting better at shooting pictures, or maybe I got lucky with a few shots.
"De-clicked" implies that it ever was 'clicked'. Deleting the aperture detente from the design is NOT a value added feature.
It’s value added if that’s valuable to its user.
is this adaptable to APS-C DSLR Cams??
Adaptable? What camera are you using?
oh I guess the word that I should've used was compatible, I'm using a canon 760D DSLR
not for a full frame?
Minolta MD mount prime lenses are great for manual focusing and have very nice sharpness (some better than others), they are not too big and they were made in Japan when shit was made properly. I keep hoping there is a cheap lens worth buying and using over my Minolta primes and zoom but so far no.
You said in the beginning f1.8. Since I speak Chinese it is pronounced as two separate words as follows:
Mei
[pronounced MAY, as the month of May]
Ke [pronounced like Kuh sort of like Duh when someone says something stupid. But just replace the "d" with a "k."
Thank you again! Come to Atlanta, let's produce something together.
Man, I was pretty close to getting the Neewer 35mm a month ago when it was much cheaper... its almost doubled in price now. Still cheap for what it is but it irks me. It makes me want to pay just a bit more to get the e-mount sigma 30mm and its af ability.
basslover352 I know what you mean. I paid $76 for it when it was first released.
I really wish Sony would make a 24 or 28mm Pancake lens just like the Canon EF-S 24mm ƒ/2.8 pancake lens! The 20mm is too wide, not sharp enough, etc. Canon's 24mm EF-S is pretty sharp! As is the 40mm EF ƒ/2.8 pancake. Need to turn my a6300 into a pocket camera with a lens! If I take the lens off I can fit in even a jeans pocket. Was hoping sony would prioritize this. The 16mm, 20mm and the kit lens are the closest thing -_- Not sure if the flange distance makes it harder for a mirrorless lens to be a pancake vs an SLR lens but they seam to be able to pull the kit lens off and the 16 and 20mm pancakes! A 28mm ƒ/2.5 OSS pancake would be perfect.
I love manual lenses
This lens isn't half bad really.
did he say hes not a pro photographer?
Venus Optics announces a new manual LAOWA 10mm f/4 cookie APS-C mirrorless pancake lens (12 elements in 8 groups, 5 blades) about 130g. The world’s widest rectilinear pancake for APS-C with super-low distortion, and high optical performance. Close minimum focusing distance (minimum distance 10cm / 4inches). For Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E, L, and Fuji X mount - Price: $299 / €292 / £249.
I would definitely prefer the Sigma30f2.8 all the way. Nice review though ;)
Sigma 30 F1.4 is even better!
TechnologyMafia And pricier :)
0:15 you said F1.8.... The lens is actually F2.8.... I wish it was a 1.8 lens.
the best for travel use Maike 35mm f1.7 or 28mm 2.8 ??
Rifal Mugnia I'd recommend the 35mm f1.7. I like that lens more, and it isn't much bigger at all.
TechnologyMafia whether the lens meike 35mm f.17 better sharpnnes between sony 50mm f1.8 ?
Rifal Mugnia The Sony 50mm is sharper. It's one of the sharpest E-Mount lenses I've tested.
Boke is like exUSSR Helios lenses.
Where have you ever seen a 28mm F1.8 or 1.7 in real life? And why didn't you compare this Meike lens with also Meike 35mm F1.7 instead of Neweer 35mm F1.7, unless you somehow like Neweer brand better for whatever reason compare to Meike? Well just a question as I am not so sure between the two brands.
